  • If there is one posture to totally avoid in your sleep to prevent having jaw problem or TMD or to stop worsening jaw problem, that is sleeping on your TUMMY!
Yes, there are some research to suggest direct link between prone lying (sleeping on your stomach) to temper-mandibular dysfunction (jaw problem).
Some people love sleeping on their stomach. I find myself sleeping on my stomach and on few occasions that has put my chin directly on the bed mattress and caused massive prolonged pressure on my jaw and caused pain.
It is almost like stretching your jaw for many minutes continuously. You can easily imagine you won't be able to walk well after stretching your calf muscle for say 30 minutes continuously because it has been overstretched and painful to put any weight down on your foot.
The same mechanism applies to your jaw.
Sleeping on your tummy may put extra pressure on one side of your jaw and put the jaw joint into prolonged period of stretch. If you do that repetitively every night, you can imagine that may be a big problem for the jaw long term.
We are meant to turn unto 24-48 times in one sleep. Options are lying on your back, right side and left side.
Once you fall asleep, there is no control over sleeping positions but at lease when going into sleep, let's avoid sleeping on your TUMMY to avoid causing jaw problem!

Good evening sir! Are you able to address the TMJ and its relation to the ear canal? I have been dealing with a lot of tinnitus, jaw clicking, neck pain, shoulder pain, migraines, vertigo, and ear fullness. I suspect it is posture and TMJ related, as I have fairly poor posture. One thing I'd really like your opinion on is how the condyle of the jaw can crush the ear canal. You are the first person I have come across whose ears move inward/downward when you open your jaw.
My ears (the tragus specifically) collapse inwards quite drastically the more I open my jaw, even just partially open. When my jaw closes I can actually feel the condyle, with my finger in my ear, compressing my ear canal. I've been trying to figure out if this is normal but my internet searches turn up essentially zero useful results, and none of the ENT's I've seen will listen to me. I've watched dozens of people open snd close their jaw lately just so I could see if their ears moved when doing so, and none of them did except yours to some extent.

Hi Kolton, thanks for your interest and comment. Whilst it is appreciated you share your symptoms and conditions, I am unable to comment on anything individually without proper assessment. So please see your local physiotherapist in your area for your individual condition. Having said at all, anatomically speaking, with so many symptoms you are describing, it would be your neck that can cause all of those symptoms and TMJ/jaw condition you have is one of the symptoms rather that origin. It is a common symptomatic manifestation in people with migraine. Migraine is driven by sensitised brainstem due to upper cervical dysfunction. This is where your poor posture comes in. So if you would like all your listed symptoms to improve, please see a physiotherapist with the view to improve your posture which improves your upper cervical spine. This leads to de-sensitisation of brainstem to normal state and in turn, reduce your migraine. Once Migraine is better with treatment of your posture and upper cervical spine, then the list of symptoms including your jaw will improve. It may not be 100% recovery but for jaw to be better, the neck needs to be better.
      All the very best,
      Tad

I think I am experiencing TMD. I woke up one morning not being able to open my jaw all the way until I popped it. After about a week of waking up that way it is now sore near my ear/joint area and I also have clicking almost every time I open my jaw. I started to sleep on just my stomach only because I had a few sleep apnea experience and I found that sleeping on my stomach with my mouth opened worked best to avoid holding my breath. Is there a way to avoid both?
