    The 6505 is, to me, the sound of NWOAHM in the mid 00s.
    EMGs into a boosted 6505 thru v30s is just iconic. It's been done to death now, but damn it sounds great. Rob Arnold, a longtime Peavey guy, recently made a video about his love of the EMG 81 and it really is a case of "if it ain't broke don't fix it".
    Great video, thanks Jon!
    Edit: love that clean tone section! Surprisingly smooth tone from this fire breather!

    Very nice presentation, especially the real cab dialing part. Sometimes you don't need any more complexity other than just this straightforward amp. I use the original 5150 with a Hughes & Kettner 4x12 in the rehearsal room with utmost satisfaction. The amp is very loud! The amp is so simple, the clean with crunch engaged and of course the lead channel for ultimate high gain roar. I have to turn down resonance to 3 in order to make some space for other instruments in the low end as well. Presence works a bit different on the 5150. At position 5 gives enough openness. Great video again. Chears.

    My first ever tube amp is EVH 5150 stealth, I feel like 5150/6505, whether Peavey or EVH, are some of the most iconic amps ever made, and they’re just very close to my heart, I’d buy a hundred of them if I could haha

      @jamesmoses4066 21 день тому

      I've been hunting for a head for about a year, and nothing that I have tried has really been what I want. But the stealth is by far the closest. To me, the stealth has a much more 80s thing going on, more mid-range. The 6505 and the 5150 iconic are more thrashy and percussive and tight, which isn't what I'm going for. Too scooped

    • @llnkv_

      @@jamesmoses4066 I feel like Stealth can do it all tbh. Although I’m using it mostly for high gain metal, I’m also in love with the green channel. @@jamesmoses4066I have the 100 watt el34stealth and I’ve recorded the old school 5150. I can say they sound extremely similar. The old school is a bit more unhinged sounding. Maybe Rae would be a better word for it. Pissed off maybe? Where the el34 stealth just sounds super polished in comparison. Even if I were to just pick a random mic placement on the cab and just record my evh it’s gonna have this focus that a peavey won’t have. Not saying better or worse. They both have their very important uses.
      For me in most cases I would probably prefer a peavey over my evh. I prefer my evh tone over a peavey but I find myself mixing music that would call for an old school peavey before it would call for a modern evh. And yes I like to reamp. So I miss out on using my evh rig a lot.
      I have however recently found a way to get my evh to sound a little more old school. I just use my boss eq200 and lower the volume to the input of my amp. This makes the amp behave and sound (to my ears) much more like an old peavey than an evh. I do this for mixing. But for jamming out by myself I just let it rip full bore because why wouldn’t I?! With all that gain on tap it’s easy to have fun jamming alone.

I Like to krank the presence knob between 8 and 9 and lower the horrible trebles...the 5150 2 is tighter because Eddie really liked the voicing of the 2x12 combo and asked James Brown to keep the mod on the new version.

    Guessing the mic'd section was at the lowest volume possible? As in when the power section actually starts doing its thing? Loved my old 6505 when I could open the taps but things seemed muffled at TV volumes. Then again, same thing with my old 5150III. Mark v 25 was a little better, but ultimately that's the reason I went to modelers. Sounds right at any volume. And yeah, still need to tweak things for loud/quiet play but that's no different than a real amp. Still miss the amp in the room sound. I noticed that when you review amps like this, you don't plug them into real speakers. That means the power amp isn't used, and we're only listening to the preamp. Is there a reason for doing it this way? I would really like to hear how it sounds when using the entire amp.

    • @SonicDriveStudio
      @SonicDriveStudio  14 днів тому

      @@052RC that's incorrect. For the "direct" examples (because I also did a bit through my cab) I use a reactive load. That's a way of going direct from the speaker out, so you hear the entire amp all the time, not just the preamp

    • @052RC
      @052RC 12 днів тому

      @@SonicDriveStudio Thanks for the info. I watch a lot of your videos, and it can be a little confusing when you run through the signal chain. A few of the other posters had the same concern as I did. Obviously, loading the circuit and taking the signal from the amp and not the preamp, is a huge step in the right direction.
      I have another question for you, if you don't mind. Using the method above, are you able to simulate power amp and speaker distortion? And what I mean by that, is in the preamp, you overdrive the input tubes directly with gain, and the actual signal distorts. Volume controls are transparent, and can't alter the signal in any way. Since you can't distort the signal with gain in the power amp, you have to do it indirectly with volume. Essentially, you have to increase volume until the power tubes fail, and can't play clean anymore. Its just like if turn the volume up on a regular stereo system until it distorts. The signal itself isn't distorted, the system just can't play cleanly at the volume you're asking it to. This is very different that preamp distortion, and I'm just asking if you're able to simulate that as well?
