There’s nothing like the red channel of a 5150 with gain at 11oclock and a green boost in front of it!! So awesome
yes.
Sounds Heavy as f*"'k !!
Awesome.
Sounds brutal AF with the Bal guitar. I had no clue about the block letter story, thanks for sharing! So much interesting history with these amps.
Didn't expect to see you over here! Hello!
hey look another youtuber that i follow :)
Duuuude, fancy seeing you here!
Yup. Sounds like a 5150/6505. Great amps all around. I say, "Buy whichever version that you can afford and you can't go wrong."
Dude the 6505 mini sounds sick, definitely up there with the 5150
@@Professional.Bro.777 I used to own that and it definitely sounds amazing. Surprised a few of my guitar friends that I hadn't seen in years. They were impressed.
@@Professional.Bro.777 THANX I was wondering :-)
So true. They're all just different flavors of great.
Should have seen my stank face when you did the classic TS with the 666 settings. That chunk is immortal.
I personally dial my highs back a bit and push everything else a tad more, kinda like a 7/7/5 setup with resonance and presence at 8. But honestly it’s so easy to make a 5150 sound incredible in multiple ways. This whole demo was ace
Yes, you are correct. I have a 1992 Block Letter. It came stock with Sylvania STR415. Same that Mesa used, and Beijing made Square foil getter 12AX7A. Mine are marked Peavey Super 7s. Engineer Of 5150 James Brown stockpiled a huge hoard of the Sylvania Tubes. The only tubes I've found in the 6l6 family close are the New Tung Sol 7581A. And I hoard the 80s and 90s Beijing 12AX7A/7025/6N4J.
This sounds a lot like the Block Letter I sold back in the day. That’s rad. Also, I want to thank you for two things: 1. Playing a Buried Alive riff while wearing a Buried Alive shirt. 2. Playing a non-Drop A riff in Drop A. I once played in a band that covered “Epicure” by Harvest and they tuned to Drop C and now I’m listening to Harvest.
I so fxxxing love your tones! Like the way you talk and the way you play.
Great demo as always! Makes me want to buy one of these 😢😢😢
Appreciate you
I know death metal has been dominated by marshall and mesa. But damn I love the 6505 for death metal. That mid range just cuts through for pounding riffs
Loved the video bro.your rhythm is fast and really sick.fuck yeah.
Kyle I've just downloaded your 5150 Kemper profiles, I loaded my preferred IR and...jesus... one of the best metal profile I ever checked.
It stays on my top 5 for ever. Thanx
Glad to hear it, my friend
How can i find his 5150 kemper profiles?
Hell yeah, props on the LoA riff.
You come up with some interesting gear I've never heard of on this channel. I've subbed even though I'm definitely no metalhead. I like some stuff that's in that category, but my infatuation ends as soon as the "devil voice" kicks in, for the most part. Well, Jinjer(sp?) are interesting enough and their little bitty petite singer unleashing hell with her vocal chords can hold my interest, but I digress. (It's a theme with me) I'm not talking about the 6505 of course, but rather the "Explorer" you're playing. I'm well on board with the Peavey tube amps, as I used to have a Triple XXX that I lovingly swapped tubes around in until it sang like a siren that I unfortunately had to sell during some really tough times a while back and I still miss it. In any case, I'm digging the videos of yours I've watched so far. I appreciate what you do and the gear I've not heard of before is pretty cool to discover ... Peace out, boy scout.
Hell yeah. Been looking forward to this one.
Very stoked to grab one of these
Classic amps, love the 5150 and 5150 II
Great video. Would love to hear it compared to your SLO.
EL34 tubes in a 5150/6505 you say? Sounds like a good idea for a future demo to me 😎🤘
Just Pre-ordered this model and this made me feel happy about the pre-order. Thanks! Great review
Glad to hear it!
wow this makes me so stoked that I found an all american sheffield cab from the 90s for less than $300 at a pawn shop the other day
Holy crap, when you started that Drop C riffing... \m/
Great video Kyle
Great job bud. 👏
love seeing/hearing you so much in your element, dude. does it get any better? then you hit the first chord on the 7 string and i pulled the stankest face.
5150 on the red channel with the pre gain between 3.5 and 5, with a boost like an OD808 or SD-1, post gain 2 and up... there aren't many metal tones more iconic than that and is probably responsible for more metal album recordings than any other amp out there. It's simply the "old faithful" of metal tones.
100%
Nice to hear some drop a playing in here. \m/
that SD-1 with the Alnico 2 Pro on the green channel!
Peavey needs a win so bad.
Definitely sounds killer brother 🤘💪⚡️
My block letter needs a backup. 10000% getting this. It has “the” sound
Sounds awesome!
I love that you use every time the same setup. It's realy better to compare. Thanks 🔥
Glad you appreciate!
Thank you Kyle. Thrash is my love too, but you should learn one or two 90s VH style riffs just for variety.
phoenix with fishman sounds awesome
Great review man!
thank you!
Ahhh FINALLY you have a 6505/5150 amp on the channel! I thought the day would never come!!!
Jk of course 😂 sounds good!
Kyle, you should be on Peavey's marketing payroll. 🎸👍
love it. "driven by suffering"
Badass vid. Considering getting this beast. A heck of a lot more affordable than the Mesa Boogie dual and triple rectifiers out now.
Average price of a Mesa Boogie triple is 2800 now🤦♂️
I remember buying one in 2000 for 1100
Love the riff from Two Faced! Are you planning to do another video with the matching speaker cabinet?
already did a couple weeks ago my friend
14:59 amazing tone
It’s pretty much this and Marshall for me although the Engl Fireball and/or Savage would be great additional amps to own.
There is a Reason we all love this Amp.
Because it is the only 5105 with that thick attack it is a good thing the haven't change anything.
export models had the IEC socket and separate cable for around twenty years now
Uncle Ted would be proud (he plays 6505's and i believe had a 112 in joe rogan's studio lol). I hope all's well on the home front bud!! Your pizza comment worries me.
O i came up with your female alter-ego...Kylie Heifer...i'll show myself out on that :P great video!
Yep, the unmistakeable crunch of a 5150/6505 amp is there.
I have a 2012 (last year of American production I believe) 6505+………. I absolutely love it…. I bought it in MINT condition four years ago for 500$….. those days are gone….
Kyle you have to check out the Keeley Red Dirt Overdrive. Unless you know already it is made for the belligerence we all love.
the hatebreed riff def sold me
ha, I JUST bought an older combo 6505+ version because of Glenn Fricker's video. I'm glad I did. Thing is a beast!
Hey Kyle are running the boost pedals in the front or through the effects loop??
05:40 How about the 6534? I always assumed it was a 6505 with a small change (apparently the powerboard mentioned in this video), does these amps (6534) also have the interchangeable tubes or is that only a thing for these new amps? Also would like to ask how a 6534 compares to a 5150iiiEL34, I love the Lead-channel from the 6505 most of my favourite bands play these so no surprise there but I prefer the clean full, mid-driven aspect of a Marshall type amp, hence my interest in these amps. PS Great video man, I've been watching more and more of your stuff the last couple of weeks, such great content, keep it up!
Damn. I just got a new 6505+ from 2008 too. Welp time for a new one
Yeah if you can do a comparison of the Mesa cabs vs the new Peavey Cabs
I believe (imo) your riff in drop A sounds pretty good...has a bit of Nevermore's sound too it. Sometimes experiment a little with the tuning, cause ya never know what might happen.
Sounds just as brutal with mesa V30s
it's almost disgusting how many versions of 5150/6505s there are now but that just means later on when the used market is full of them all I can get one and sound just like everyone else lol
Kyle would you do a test on the H&K GrandMeister 40
Great Video as always 👌🏻 btw have you tryed the ironball se? Would like to hear your opinion
you will know soon
@@belligerentamateur so engl week is finaly coming? 😅
Watching this smashing a whole pizza by myself while my wife watches the Grammys lol
Kyle!! Are those amps actually yours? I’m new to the channel
Did Peavey change anything on the MH 6505? Or just changed the logo up front ?
You had me at first riff.
my man
What a monster!!!!
Cease and Decist came from Electro Voice, not EHX. 🤣 close enough tho.
Play some soundgarden riffs those types of riffs really shine with that type of amp
Nice shirt OG! My favorite amp! Did you just played Two faced by xDisciplex A.D.? ha ha
Sure is! I'm in a band with the drummer of that band 😎
@@belligerentamateur Wow! nice! I'll look you guys up for sure! a bunch of bangers in this video ha ha
you should do a comparison of this, and an SLO, i believe the 6505 is a copy of an SLO? would be interesting seeing the differences.
Not a copy, but shares some DNA
Sounded great , did you see what brand tubes are in it ? Also any info on transformer and country of build ??
JJ. I'm sure it's made in China
I rewatched the video thank you for for the info on the transformer. Certainly sounds great overall. Would be interested in the el34 , possibly ehx 6ca7 and even a set of original block letter tubes in it to see if any obvious tone change , I agree with you on the lower output pickups.
such a classic fucking tone but now with the modern clearer EVH its hard to go back
15:06 when he finally goes to the red channel
I haven't had a 6505 in a few years and this is REALLY making me want one again. Damn it.
It's a must
There actually is a difference between pre-1998/9 power transformers and later. Brown talked about it in his tone talk interview near the hour mark. They changed manufacturers @1998.
They changed power transformer manufacturers somewhere during the 6505's production. But it was still made to the same exact specs.
The block letter and signature have the same exact power transformer. The only difference is the Block letter shipped with Sylvania 6L6's stock.
The 1992 Original on the other hand, uses a smaller Chuang Meei transformer, and despite all the marketing pixie dust was most likely left over stock from the Invective.
I feel so out of place because everyone in the comments seems to love the lead channel on these amps for rhythm playing, but I honestly think using the rhythm channel on these amps for actual rhythm playing sounds leaps and bounds better than the lead for rhythms (hence the name “rhythm” channel lol.)
I wonder though if maybe in the context of a mix blending two tracks, one being the lead channel, and one being the rhythm channel, would give you the best of both worlds in terms of recording guitar tracks and getting sick tones out of it.
I can’t really tell, but does it so much like the original?
hello, don't you say in another video that the 6505 is already the same as the 5150 blockletter/signature ?
so why this amp ? is it really a difference between the 6505 and the 6505 "1992" ?
There is no difference between the 5150 block letter/5150 signature/6505.
The 6505 1992 original is the same amp with new style connectors, different screen grid resistors, IEC power cord, and a smaller Chinese transformer. Voltage switching and the ability to bias for EL34s is nice, but other than that its pure marketing.
I didnt know about the EHX C&D where can I learn more about that?
It's actually Electro Voice, I got that wrong. Listen to the tone talk episode with James Brown
Miyako from LOVEBITES plays a 6505+. 🤘🏼🐺🤘🏼
I like it more with the lower output pickups. I actually don’t have one of those amps, an original 5150, any Eddie related amps. My reasoning is because at one point so many people were all going for that type of tone & amp.
I still avoid that amp so I don’t sound like every other person. Though I do understand not everyone sounds the same. Kind of a strange paradox there huh?
use a different speaker. Problem solved
@Kyle Bull l have a couple of different cabs loaded with different speakers. I'll jump on a used one and give it shot.
Did anyone else notice at 18:46 he turned the rhythm channel gain down instead of the lead channel gain? Does that have any effect at all on the lead channel on these amps?
EDIT: ok I noticed after the cut the lead gain knob was turned down too.
18:00 same mistake, not affecting the lead channel at all..
This amp is killer
Agreed
Was there much difference with the Mesa cab Vs the Peavey with Sheffield's?
Aaaaand I just got to the 27 minute mark
How stable are those stacks of amp heads?
Totally unstable, every second sitting in front of them is a gamble
You can actually get a good clean on the red channel w the gain on 0.
very cool video but Its a crime against my banking account :))
Soaked in torment on a 7 string just sounds like a death metal song lol
it ain't BAD though
I want to hear the 6505 1992 vs the new 6505 II. Does the extra tube make a big difference in crushing tone?
exactly the same difference as between the 6505 and 6505+ or the 5150 and 5150ii. Th extra tube is only for the green channel In order to get better cleans.
@@belligerentamateur Thanks!
cool
NOICE. \m/
no u
Ya 5150s are the shiznat. I like all kinds of amps, but when you play a 5150 it just has a brutalness to it that is super dark/evil sounding. The black dahlia murder could've basically used any amps they wanted and they stuck with the 5150s...I could name a bunch of bands with the same preference. And the price and availability makes it great for touring musicians.
Bro it'd be dope if they revamped the 6534 amp
If this can take el34 tubes theres no reason the build 6534 amps. Just buy some el34 tubes dude!!!
When will it released into the wild?
Should be very soon
6505 1992 or 6505 II, and why?
Do you ever get tired of playing all those amps
Sheffield IR in the near future???
stay tuned
Mark of the squeeler
EL34s? LETS DOET!
I wonder why Peavey opted to not add an adjustable bias on this 😐
There is one on the main board in the chassis. It’s adjustable bias, just not externally
Kyle!! Love your videos but god almighty your playing needs practice lol keep up the good work
I will purposely never practice because of this comment. Hope you hate it
The Peavey will always be the best metal amp ever, i used to have an evh at the studio and it didn't have the punch that the Peavey delivered, so my guitar player ended up selling that evh lol
I’m the opposite. I felt like my EVH 100 Stealth smacked my old block letter right in the face lol my buddy agreed when I had him listen for a 2nd opinion. Sold the block letter and haven’t looked back. Still a great amp, though.
@@brandonbryson3317 fair, my shootout was the white Evh 5153 50 watt version, the stealth seems to be most powerful among the 5150 amps
@@brandonbryson3317 The 100 watt Stealth is king. They are just not designed and built all that well. Made in Mexico. Same as China. Maybe worse. And they are really expensive. They sound killer, but I will pass. Not a good value.
To me the 6534+ with a good boost pedal has the best punchy sound I’ve ever heard. I got a 6534 and push with a airis savage v2 boost and if I feel like it a high wind direwolf overdrive. I don’t use both pedals at the same time but both add subtle differences that sound great.
People's champ amp
Seriously, playing mid-gain on a 5150/6505 is like slapping wood panels on a Ferrari and driving it at 40 miles an hour.
