Ratt's early albums are full of memorable riffs and sick licks. If only people could listen with their ears, not eyes... Because _glam_ or _hair metal_ bands are so hated by people who don't like their looks and 80s fashion in general.

My son and I got a chance to meet Jim Root at a gas station a few hours out from Tucson in April 2024, super nice dude. Made small talk with him, he invited us to Slipknot's "secret" show and took pictures with us. My son and I were the only ones that knew who he was and to top it off, as he was paying for his things, he saw an elderly lady coming in struggling with the door, he drops his things and runs to the door to help open it. They say that to never meet your heroes, that day made me deny that quote.

For theory nerds, at 6:25: He's playing F Lydian (if it were in E Standard tuning, I'll just make this entire comment as if it were in E Standard). The next shape is G Mixolydian. From there would be A Aeolian or natural minor. Basically his teacher was showing him how to play all the notes through the fretboard in the key of C Major/A Minor through the modes which is super helpful.
Also, I've covered over 4 albums' worth of Jim's parts and taught lessons on many of them. If anyone in Jim's camp somehow sees this, would love to pick his brain on Slipknot parts specifically.

Love James Root and Slipknot and Guitar.
In my opinion learning the seven modes are totally worth it and will unlock many things over time . Overlaying everything you already knew on guitar in relation to all 7 modes .
Ex. Crazy train and Miracle Man are in f# minor (aeolian) which makes A your Ionian or major root and access to the rest of the 6 modes.
When shifting the minor to A your Ionian would end up on C and you could play with songs like Ain't talking bout love Van halen or Heading out to the highway Judas Preist.
May the doors swing open for all , the world needs us all . Peace from WA

Wow. It’s awesome that y’all got Jim to give that deep of an explanation about the scale run. You can tell how much that trickles into his playing, and it seems to be his go-to for noodling. Awesome to get the break down so that I can give it a try

Jim, I'm assuming your teacher was Michael Curry? I never knew he was your teacher, I just thought you were in Atomic Opera with him. He taught me at Ye Olde Guitar Shoppe too when I was around 13-14 years old. He went through a divorce and was on the phone with his wife. I showed up to my lesson and he pointed to you to give me a lesson. You asked what I liked and I said Megadeth. So you taught me the intro to Tornado of Souls, which had just been released. I think you were the one who taught me about natural harmonics from that song. I remember thinking, damn I wish this guy would be my teacher because I was picking up what you were teaching faster - you also had crazy long hair back then.

I also took lessons from Michael. I was right around that same age. I think it was around 93 probably. He would have me go next door to Kum&Go i think it was and get him a coffee before my lesson sometimes 😂. Just read the rest of your comment, wow that's awesome!

@@gilmourdimegates That’s cool, I’m not sure what the store was but Michael would walk me next door to use their copy machine to copy the tab out of magazines. I was rocking a black Charvette bought from the store.

Totally on board with Jim about being a band person. Writing and producing on your own loses out on that collaborative element that for me is intrinsic in band music. I think i will always call myself a "band guy" even if that is becoming more and more uncommon as of late. Good talk!!!
