Big 5 Personality Traits

Psychological researchers often define personality in terms of five core traits, which can be thought of as stable dispositions that drive behavior. The five-factor model of personality encompasses these basic traits:
- openness to experience
- conscientiousness
- extraversion-introversion
- agreeableness
- neuroticism
The traits, often referred to as the "Big 5," are summed up by the acronyms OCEAN or CANOE. Every individual manifests each of the five broad dimensions of personality to one degree or another, and the infinite variety of ways individuals differ in how the traits are expressed is what makes the study of personality endlessly fascinating. Using questionnaire-based testing, psychologists measure the degree to which each of the traits is individually manifest.
The five-factor model is used to help understand and predict relationships between personality traits and success in social, academic, and professional circumstances. The model has been criticized for its limitations with respect to the number of personality traits evaluated and for the fact that it is a data-driven model and not based on a psychological theory. Proponents of the five-factor model argue that it delivers consistent results and that such a description of personality must come before, not after, a theory of personality.

I really appreciate and respect Peterson giving credit to his student like that.
I noticed that too--it's good. I worked in research with a bunch of academics who took credit for their staff's ideas. It was demoralizing and unethical.
This is why he is so easy to like and appreciate!

Not too soon in life tho. There's alot of fundamental wisdom created in curious exploration and experimentation. This is why I can't get behind the "transkids" movement ... It negates/robs immature humans of that natural curiosity, exploration, and experimantation that is so fundamental to developing personal character. @@ecurb10 I am a mechanic for the plant and vehicles of Estes Logistics North. I work third shift so I have no coworkers. I just repair the forklifts, machinery, lorries, even company cars and occasional employee vehicles as a benefit to them. I come to work, look up my assignments for the night, and get to work. The customers are handled by a different department. Most employees work at day. I am an in-house, nocturnal, grease monkey. But it pays extremely handsomely, thus I stay with it.

That's what we need when couples start families and have children in my opinion. It sets them up more well and healthy and respectable for the kids and adults alike and opens up the door for further moral and practical knowledge and competency.

My husband was orderly and conscientious, I am much more relax and chill kinda person. He was disagreeable and I was agreeable. Opposites may attract ... But they can never last. Companionship can only really come from similarity.
But even so for example that both parties have different personality traits, if love is really on the table, each would make sacrifices, adjustments for them to be compatible. They will endure for a time their different traits, then learn how to understand it, so they could move forward. But if one, even if one only won't make the efforts to match with the other, then it's best to leave the relationship.
This makes a lot of sense. I think I am definitely industrious. I prefer to be busy with something useful.

Is it possible to transform one's personality traits through repeating thoughts and actions aimed at creating new habits?
What about the remaining traits Neuroticism and Openness to Experience? What can someone that usually score high in neuroticism do to navigate in relationships?
That’s been something we have been trying to pin down for quite some time. What is optimal for a good relationship.
For awhile it was this idea that there needs to be this counter balance. (Opposites attract.)
Though we found that to be wrong mostly, though there was something about it worth mentioning.
Then obviously its been said the more similar you are the better. Though yes, in some respects. Though also no, because the desire for a relationship stagnates if they are exactly the same.
After all, humans are a reactionary species that only lived for 30 years or so.
So now we sit at a cross roads between the two theories. After all balance is needed in all things, or so the saying goes.
I’m not in any way understanding of everything Jordan speaks about. However, I’ve spent a lot of my youth teaching those seeking advice or guidance, that in order to fit in with people, or in this case, a significant other, you MUST figure out, understand (change if needed) who you are.
I think about conflicting personality traits a lot. The way I see it, if you both find it difficult and nerve grating to be around each other, it’s not that either one is wrong, it’s just the wrong fit. It shouldn’t feel like work and a lot of tongue biting just to be around each other. Same goes for personalities too similar to yours. It’s hard to respect or grow w a person w the same flaws as you.
Tolerance transcends into ever deepening varials. How much you can tolerate it for tat, given your own imperfections is unique to a degree. But I still agree with Jordans thesis.

Has anyone noticed that most all of comments are from extroverts. Which is obvious from the comments themselves. What I'm getting to is " I'm glad for UA-cam ect. " Being able to share a little at a time has helped me change my personality from an extreme introvert to move ever so slightly on the scale of opening up a little more. It still blows me away how people need people though. I just can't make since of it. I'm not trying to upset anyone.

My friend is a 180kg big guy who sings falsetto. He sounds like a 12 year old girl.
Sometimes the contrast is compelling and striking.
Peterson speaks very articulately with big words and has great story telling artistry. His voice also sounds like Kermit the frog. This contrast, like my friend that sings (and makes a living from singing) is unique. It’s pretty cool too. It makes people unique and calling out the contrast is not being ‘unpleasant’. It has, in my observations, assisted in building the unique listening experience and his brand idiosyncrasies.

As someone well versed enthusiast of mythology, allegory and parable, Peterson certainly knows the potential power of an invisible dangerous entity just like ‘satan’ in Christianity. The narrative requires a nemesis of epic proportions. Scary and infused in many life situations. An imminent threat that can possibly make you obsolete and cause you harm. He needs the ‘left cultural Marxist regressive’ for his brand to exist. It’s how he began his notoriety and he works meticulously to perpetuate the existence of this monster. The pictures of screaming blue haired lesbians after trump was elected or some kids who screamed over him at Uni were perfect visual validating characters that he has used to, in his own words, ‘monetise the left’.
If you were raised through early childhood with Christian mythology, you will probably have a subconscious affinity with Peterson and his sympathy to the supernatural Jesus story. It will probably feel ‘familiar’. Jordan speaks to narrow-minded individualism, obscure metaphysics, and existentialist angst. If you prefer a little more evidence and reason, look elsewhere.

I’ve just finished practicing clinical psychology for 5 years and are doing some more post grad studies now.
This is my informed and to a degree, qualified opinion.
I have purchased his book and attended his speaking appointment here in Australia.
He says some cool things. Some very harmful things too. Like most people.

I'm intj. I need an observer to stop my perfect plans failing due to my administrative incompetence.
I know it's the admin and my se weeknes because I've written business plans for more sencory aware people and they have done well. I've tried twice and failed twice.
Maybe twice is not enough.. try more times that may even improve your administration. Strong will.
@A Van Called Rupert-It's called Positive Accountability (the observer you speak of). And it's not only for those with "administrative inability". Those with Conscientious personalities (those with admin ability) are only 25% of the population, and even though they are Task Oriented, they can still accomplish the wrong things. Further, when they start to succeed, they need people oriented skills to lead properly or they will begin to fail. So in reality, we all need someone of our opposite personality to be strong where we are week. Also, your def of "admin incompetence" is needed to make sure we're talking about the same thing. I am doubly Outgoing, with half part Task and half part People orientation. And I need positive accountability to make sure I stay on target and get the "right" work done-activity doesn't equal accomplishment. My bride is 97% opposite of who I am and is strong where I am weak and is a great accountability for me-as I am for her-in personal and business life. Knowing your personality, hire someone who is opposite to be who you cannot or will not be. Lead them well and get to the success you are looking for. Or bring in someone you highly respect who is willing, and let them be your positive accountability. In all cases, a good understanding of personality allows you to know why you do what you do and how to connect with your opposites (and even your similars) so you can build rapport and understanding to get to your definition of success. Press on!

I’m a introvert. It puts me at a disadvantage to succeed. I don’t know how to act in groups of people. How can o succeed if I’m so lazy and don’t like being around people because I feel so uncomfortable?
Joseph find success in flow with who you are. Think of successful authors as one example. Besides, you may consider yourself lazy because you’re thinking of activities you don’t enjoy. What about activities you do enjoy?

My theory, sort of, as to why stars (extroverted) turn to drugs, they are so used to having people around that when they disappear for even a moment, they are lost and can only find solace in drugs.
The introverts seem to live out their lives long because they are okay being alone.

How do you know if you are extroverted? I'm 26 and I still have no idea. I have no problem talking to people, I really enjoy it, but it also tries me out. I'm super motivated by people around me, but desperately need occasional alone time. Every personality test I take yields different results

mutual respect is the key when spouses have opposing qualities. ideally a couple should have opposing but not extremely opposing traits so the child can gain both your strengths and no weaknesses, and so the spouses themselves can work on their own weaknesses by learning from the other's strengths. ideally.
Unlocked That’s a smart answer. I would add that the action of doing what doesn’t please you in order to please your spouse is loving them in its most basic form. And on top of that, the more you love them, the more love they will be filled with to then pour out back on you. And the kids can learn how to love by observing the two parents doing this to each other. It is typical for men and women want opposite things, and so sacrificing for the other person’s sake is usually always available to each spouse. But the man should sacrifice more for his wife than she does for him, as men are commanded to love their wives as Christ loved the church, who gave Himself up for her. (Ephesians 5)
