As a perfectionist this hit home hard. It prevents me from attempting anything I know I'm not fully capable of completing without fault. That may be fine in the workplace (most of the time) but in social situations where failure is a given it just arrests any kind of emotional development. I'm a 13 year old in the shape of an adult. Being a perfectionist in life is NOT a good thing.
After working on my imperfect perfectionism for six decades I may have some insight. ** Sometimes it's actually fear. The way to overcome fear is to do it, Peterson says so too. Despite plenty of dating rejections and disappointments I am God-blessed with my wife of 35 years. **attainable excellence is excellence nonetheless. I got good grades at a state college. Fear has a funny way of impressing us with things we don't appreciate. It makes monsters out of ordinary people and animals. It builds mountains out of mole hills. I've yet to try something I was afraid of trying and not find it considerably less painful than I'd expected. More often, I've found a hidden appreciation for the thing I was afraid of trying. At the very least, I've found (or cultivated) a dutiful respect for the other people who do the thing I was afraid to try. Perfectionism... tends more to be an excuse. Of course you're going to screw it up before you get really good at it. BUT it's not going to screw itself up either so you can just start out good at it. AND just for the record, I've hidden behind "perfectionism" too. It's a human frailty. We often rationalize when we shouldn't. We're often lazy out of the abject horror of wrecking an otherwise stellar(?) reputation... but is that reputation so stellar? Probably not. At the very least, it's probably not as stellar as we like to think. We are (after all) usually the engineers of our own disasters. BUT if we don't put in the practice, we can't get "good" at anything. ;o)
You cant do something hard and complex perfect the first time.Noone can.If you're not willing to be a fool you'll never be a master. So prepare yourself, you'll be made fun off, you'll feel inadequet,People will hurt you.But if you stick to it for a long time with patience and persistance the taunting will become applause.
knowledge that perfection is impossible to reach does not mean failure is guaranteed, everything is flawed in the world, true perfection does not exist, the idea of perfection itself is a human construct created by society so that we always have something to aspire to be, our idea of perfection constantly changes when we reach what we previously thought to be perfect, but be aware that there's no such thing as mastering something completely, acknowledging that your knowledge no matter how much you have, is just a drop in the bucket compared to what the world offers is the key to acquiring more knowledge, because if you believe you've mastered something you're ignoring the fountain of knowledge that awaits you, all you have to do is go after it

Well, Nass, you articulated quite well, I think, Dr. Peterson's striving to develop his thinking and individuated, nuanced speech. He oftentimes utilizes his public communications (and tactful showmanship, indeed!), to avoid overintellectualizing, thereby bypassing alienating eager individuals, while at once incorporating that which may be, across all cultural, moral, and ethical boundaries readily identifiable through emotionally-based, extremely potent explanations and point of view; these viewpoints extoll explanations, I think, remain wholly or near-entirely neglected by academics. Many academics like Dr. Peterson without, I easily admit, any personal knowledge or awareness thereof said types -- are probably, and understandably, unwilling to meet those who've not necessarily 'earned' or 'pay for' access to what Peterson, in contrast, has become over the years, and is becoming even still; A, as you first said Nass, "his own man." Well said. Very well stated, I think! Warmest regards to you and thank you for your input. If you feel, you will inevitably think, evidenced by your statements above, so finding the words will become easier and easier once you delve more and more into point-counterpoint, various (mystical, or non-mystical) paradoxes, linguistics, mathematical modeling, etc. Really: Anything you wish to engage in. I wish you the best of luck, which I do genuinely mean! I hope you have a good day, Nass, and I really appreciate your thought-provoking exclamations abovestated regarding Dr. Peterson. But then I click anyway and then I get my answer in those last couple of minutes; THE FACT THAT YOU'RE FULL OF FAULTS DOESN'T MEAN YOU HAVE TO STOP. AND IT DOESN'T MEAN YOU CAN'T LEARN.!! I have to remember that in fact I'll most likely fail often and horribly in the beginning especially.

Thank you Mr. Peterson. You have no idea how much you have helped me in my journey! Everything you are saying here is Exactly what I am going through right now! Providence. Grace upon me. I needed this right now like a man dying of thirst needs water to live a minute longer and longer after that. This saved my life. Thank you!
So, do badly every day and enjoy every minute of your journey towards achieving the unreachable goal of perfection. The mantra of every (great) artist.
And thank you for the advice on the spiritual awakening. I had no idea what I was getting myself into! It’s like I had to kill off at least a hundred me’s that didn’t serve me. Today is a much better day. 😇 always choosing joy.
Learn to read music- I have attempted and failed many times... I'm only keeping myself from doing it because of fear of failure. In the back of my mind, I know I will succeed because there is the nagging thought that success is possible even though millions of failed attempts lie ahead. Thank you Jordan Peterson, we all thank you.
If you do this process he describes enough it becomes a skill in the greater picture. Ultimately it is the skill of improvisation, a profound form of play vital to liberation and a beautiful life. Improvising is one of the top reasons I was able to save my life and liberate from abuse when I was 15-17. Surrender to the path. Learn surrender and improvising and you will discover gateways to healing, enlightenment and creation. Beautiful video with some of Jordan’s best laid out advice.
I have adhd and I try to learn to organize my day in a calendar. It went well for two days and today I screwed up big. This video was that I needed to watch to gain perspective
Every time I need to hear this it comes up through auto play, a reminder that it all has a purpose; I am continuing to circle who I could be! It feels like a fundamental truth, and it helps me with acceptance and learning what I have needed to. Part of that learning was the letting go of things that no longer have a place in nurturing or teaching me. Thank you 🙏
I needed that! Almost 50 and started taking piano lessons and the fact that it felt I was not improving cause of doing it so badly I almost quit. This lecture really puts things back in perspective. When you attempt something new you will overshoot and mess up badly in the beginning, but that is the way to mastery of anything in life. Willingness to look and feel like a fool attempting something new and worthwhile and realising that the failures and mistakes really are forms of improvement as you seek a worthy goal or ideal
What this guy is saying is more important than you think. There is a deeply embeded fear of failure that is holding back a lot of people nowadays. In reality, this fear of failure is because we perceive huge negative consequences in failure because of the way we were raised and the faulty values we learned in childhood. In reality, we have to let ourselves fail, like, really, nothing bad is gonna happen 99% of the time is this pursuit. Let yourself fail so you can move forward, become completely okay with it instead of living a life of pretenses. It is such a relief and eventually you will get what you want.
What a great message and very much akin to the stories of Christmas and the dawn of the new year. I wish everyone well on their journey of rebirth as we move onwards into the new year!
I've listened to this about 6 times today. There's so much that applies directly to what I'm going through, and I keep listening to unpack and hone in on the specifics. The fool precedes the savior, yes, and I'm also in Exodus, wandering around, sometimes worshipping the wrong things, as I try to figure out the devil I don't know, which seems to be me. And the idea of what interests you, and what he said in another speech, if you don't listen, you will pay for it like you cannot believe, and yes that is true. I'm paying, but not too heavily I suppose as I did listen, I just worked at it on the side, because you society says this, and it' is hard to ignore when you are young, so I tell my kids, listen to yourself, what grabs you, you go and do it. I love this speech.
Well damn this sure explains the trail of absolutely catastrophic decisions I have made in the last 37 years of my life.... but hey at least I have returned to University to finally finish my engineering degree as I promised myself to do long, long ago...
Very good video. If you always wait for the ‘perfect’ moment, it will never get done. You really need to learn how to let go and just do it. Growth comes from progress, not perfection.
Think of this metaphor- "The kingdom of God is withing you." Think deeper than the religious connotation. Think of the true best whole self being revealed from deep within you. Think of the idea of needing to be "born again" coming from deep within you. (This is the stuff that seems to make sense to me.) Peterson is has a mind that gets it in on so many levels. Most of us are asleep and do not know it.

Thank you sir. You give so many people Hope. A true god send
Thank you Dr. Peterson.
Providence. Grace upon me. I needed this right now like a man dying of thirst needs water to live a minute longer and longer after that. This saved my life. Thank you!
So, do badly every day and enjoy every minute of your journey towards achieving the unreachable goal of perfection.
The mantra of every (great) artist.
All the best 2020,may the best of this year be the worst of next year.
Peterson is reminding us of the old and forgotten "Man" path!
"Nothing is better than something pathological" Thank's dude, I'm the best I knew it !
This is one of the best of Jordan B. Peterson.
I admire this speech
Very important information for 2020! Hope all had a blessed holiday
Indeed..
Jordan Peterson videos are the only videos i click the like button before the play button.
This man is my Hero.
This guy is an angel
I can’t begin to articulate how much JP has helped/improved my life. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Mr. Peterson is right on. Sort of goes with the saying I saw years ago. By anonymous. ‘ One who attempts the absurd Shall achieve the impossible’
This is extraordinarily profound.
I love listening to Jordan Peterson speak.
Love seeing this a few days before 2020!
This man is holding my head above the water
So much wisdom in such a short video
I have adhd and I try to learn to organize my day in a calendar. It went well for two days and today I screwed up big. This video was that I needed to watch to gain perspective
Exactly what I needed before leaving this decade and entering 2020.
Knowing what you now know, do you still feel the same way?
One of the most positive comment section I've seen so farr!!❤
Implementation we imply to our lives and perception of truth.God bless Professor Jordan Peterson
I save these lectures and I will play them for my children to make them wiser than I could have ever been.
Stumble toward greatness.
I really like this man. How the MSM can paint him in a negative way I can't understand. Shame shame shame on those who malign good people for gain.
I agree. They don't like how perfectly he can articulate their wrongdoing.
The best and most practical motivational speech I've ever listened to.
Failing forward is a great teacher.
What a great message and very much akin to the stories of Christmas and the dawn of the new year. I wish everyone well on their journey of rebirth as we move onwards into the new year!
Can you imagine anyone thumbing this down?
Love you Peterson....
Thank you For the reminder that it is good to take a step unsure as it may be and learn that never take a chance
Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly…watch a child learning to walk :-).
Thank you! This was a really good example.
This really came along at the right time ♥️ I wish good health and fortune to Dr. Peterson
I know this speech by heart by now
Well damn this sure explains the trail of absolutely catastrophic decisions I have made in the last 37 years of my life.... but hey at least I have returned to University to finally finish my engineering degree as I promised myself to do long, long ago...
Very good video. If you always wait for the ‘perfect’ moment, it will never get done. You really need to learn how to let go and just do it. Growth comes from progress, not perfection.
He is just too awesome
Think of this metaphor- "The kingdom of God is withing you." Think deeper than the religious connotation. Think of the true best whole self being revealed from deep within you. Think of the idea of needing to be "born again" coming from deep within you. (This is the stuff that seems to make sense to me.) Peterson is has a mind that gets it in on so many levels. Most of us are asleep and do not know it.
Your truly a Godsend 🙏❤️😭
Thank you for reminding me of the gift of the freedom to fail.
Best JP talk I've ever heard
Thank you! Jordan Peterson..
Truly, profoundly.... amazing, just utterly amazing. I needed this. Thanks.
What was profound about it?
"Anything worth doing is worth OVERDOING."
- Mick Jagger
His legacy WILL live on.
I wish you spoke to us years ago about these things. Jordan I appreciate every post. Thank you.
Such a beautiful one.. how can he exactly say the things that are so much of a thin line.. this man is really great♥️♥️
Hope to meet Peterson one day. Whenever I he teach something I learn many things 😁
So intuitively smart you are!
The amount of himself this man genuinely gives of himself to us is astounding. He's what we need desperately.
This is so good I watch it regularly on a schedule. Thank you for making this.
