  • Why Did OneTigris Do This?
    This is the Mona which is a one person tent from OneTigris.
    It's has some serious problems and I have to question, what was OneTigris thinking here?
    This is a big disappointment.

    I actually like the fabric. I sleep cold, so anything that helps me stay warm at night is a good thing.

      Warmth should be provided by an insulated pad and a sleepingbag. A tents job is to keep you dry from rain or dew. But if airflow is compromised you will regret it

    Hi Luke, they sent me one too and my review is very similar to yours. Ironically from a UK perspective I said the tent didn't have enough solid material in the inner to make it usable outside of summer. I guess we live in different climates and really they should have a 3 season and 4 season inner choice like competition like Naturehike and 3f ul gear. Basically it's not up to the competition, they need to try harder ! A

    The amount of fabric wouldn't be an issue for me - I live and camp in Scotland and summer still hasn't arrived here and when it does, it won't last long. More of an issue is that fly touching the inner because again, Scotland - we get rain .... lots of rain. Sort the fly and add some vents and I'd consider it.

    Tent looks awesome. I may have to get it. I like the idea that it could be a bit more than a 3 season tent. I've camped in Spring and/or Fall when it got darned cold. It appears to me that there's enough mesh to give sufficient airflow in many cases. Now if I'm going to camp in Death Valley in July then I'd choose something else.

      Yeah, this would probably work great for trips where the temp is between that 30-65 degree range. Anything warmer & I’d want a tent with better ventilation & perhaps some vents on the fly itself.
      All in all, it would still be useable in a fair amount of conditions.

    A good three season tent should not only have a mesh inner as it would be to cold and windy in the off season! The fabric inner is a plus, making it's cooler season use much more adaptable!

    Also, I gotta say, your wife is reviewing Coleman. I like that. That's how I got in. I ended up in a huge thunderstorm with 70 mph winds. My daughter and I were holding down our tents. They almost held up. The smaller 4p tent my daughter had is still in service. The larger 6P tent I was in was serviceable for the rest of the trip, but the fiberglass poles split down the sides and I had to throw it away. It was crazy. That said, I give a shout out to Coleman . Low price point, and good in sub 70 mph gusts, lol! But, yes, a lot of fabric up the sides makes it warm during the day. Even up North in July and August...

    Yet another good review. As the name of the tent suggests you may end up being one yourself if it leaks with the outer and inner tent touch in places.

  • @WayneTheSeine
    @WayneTheSeine 17 днів тому

    Actually the tent should excell at being a 3+ season tent. The issue with the ends of the tent touching the inner body can easily be resolved by OT by simply adding in a tieout loop on the bottom edge. I am not sure why so many tents we see do not ave vents in the upper area. The perfect tent would have at least two and they would be deployable from within the tent. I just snagged a North Face Stormbreak 2 to use bikepacking. I set it up in the livingroom the other night and was totally impressed with the layout, but, no vents in the upper area. It is an interesting tent though. It has double doors, double vestibule and both doors can be rolled up halfway. Most are all or none. There are toggles for rolling back the vestibule wings which completely opens both sides of the tent for ventilation. The fabric coverage is minimal. Both doors almost completely unzip.....leaving a small portion that allows the door to be tucked into mesh pockets. Also, both vestibules allow for awnings on both sides of the tent. I picked the tent up for $110.00. It might be a good tent for you to take a look at. Great review.

  • @gmorrison1962

    When you put the rain fly on, I guess it doesn't matter how much fabric or how little mesh the tent has. The rain fly is gonna stop all airflow.

    The issues are not such deal breakers except the price when the aussie exchange is factored in. The tent stakes are no big deal i always have a couple extra, I don't camp in summer so much as bushfires and snakes are too common but for autumn, winter, spring it does not seem to bad. Just have to see if it leaks or gets lots of condensation.

    6-2 is not that tall anymore. That's what I am. I think it's a really nice looking tent. I'd say it's going to be waterproof and probably at least acceptable for condensation. If I needed one, it would be on my list. I camp mostly in the spring and fall. Too many bugs mid-summer. It just seems like they are going to miss quite a few people that check on the length of it. Sleeping bags at least have the sense to make a long size.

    I've been waiting for years for Onetigris to bring out a decent 1-man tent and this seems to tick all the boxes for me, except for the price.
    It might well be $180 over in the US, but here in the UK it's on Amazon for £260....so that's $330 at current exchange rate for the exact same product!
    That would make it the single most expensive Onetigris tent that I (maybe would have) ever bought from Amazon...what the hell is up with that?
    Since Brexit happened, I've noticed that prices for camping gear have been shooting up for a while now, but this is really taking the p**s.

Thats ridiculous, I have a freestanding one person that is 34 ounces, I have a trekking pole one person tent that weighs 19 ounces, and both cost only about 40 dollars more than this One Tigris tent, I would barely even classify it as lightweight.

    I think you're making to big of an issue about the fabric. In my country it's like 10-15C at night during summer anyway, and full-mesh inner it's actually a problem for me in windy conditions. If I setup tent on open space, no amount of mesh will help me out against the sun in the morning anyway. This tent's inner actually looks pretty smart to me. I currently use Naturehike Opalus 2, it's 1/3 bottom fabric, and it's perfect for me.

    • @Im_With_Stupid
      @Im_With_Stupid 11 днів тому

      He doesn't even have to look outside the US as there's plenty of places right here that have cool summers. Even so, that piddly little bit of solid fabric really isn't going to matter one way or the other. The lack of vents, now that might be a different story, but what Luke does is say "This is a poor choice for *me* and where *I* live, therefore it's a stupid design and needs to be changed", which is what he did with the Lichen Peak.
      The Opalus 2 is a great tent, though. Incidentally, he did a review of the Opalus 3, which is marketed as a 4 season tent, and poopooed it because "You can't use this tent in the winter", even though I use my Opalus 2 in the winter all the time in the same windy, rainy, subfreezing North Carolina mountains he lives in.

  • @nigelgunn322

    You continually disregard the fact that much of your audience live in the colder parts of the world where a full mesh inner isn't warm enough, even mid-summer. Agree that there is a lack of clearance between fly and inner in places and there is no excuse for guy points and no guys or pegs.

      I see validity in your first point , however if we're going there, let's go even further. When a company says "three season" , what geographical region do they refer to ? To your point , climates are vastly different , seasons are different in relation to your region. Perhaps it should be on the manufacturer to state if it's for three seasons in Missouri , or three seasons in Minnesota . For that matter does Florida even have three seasons ? Or Alaska ? I mean seasons change there but you get my point I'm sure. And that's just the USA for terms of the discussion being scaled down.

      In the heat of the summer you want a mesh tent for the ventilation. For cooler climates at elevation you just bring a warmer sleeping bag.
      Inner fabric instead of mesh is absolutely miserable in the summer.
      Even in cooler weather you want airflow and a nice breeze.
      It shouldn’t be identified as a 3 season tent.

      Good point. You can bear that in mind when deciding. A lot of companies ratings are based on some enchanted forest imo, they need to add more detail to their ratings and will only do that when good reviewers point it out

    • @Im_With_Stupid
      @Im_With_Stupid 17 днів тому

      This problem exists because the companies themselves market them as 3 or 4 season tents, not because somebody who uses one doesn't consider the validity of those claims in regions he or she will likely never experience. The whole notion of 3 season/4 season tents needs to come to an end for the simple fact that everyone's conditions are *not* the same. In the USA alone there are many different climates. North, south, east, west and central, mountains, plains or coastal.... It's all very different. Look at the materials, guy points, HH rating, etc. and then consider your particular climate when determining what is viable there and when. That's as far as it needs to go.
      On the subject of Luke personally, he's not a very good reviewer. He's narrowminded, very biased and doesn't know as much as he pretends to. That's a fact, and his constant habit of criticizing a product design itself because it doesn't work well for his specific conditions or simply because he doesn't know how to use or pitch something is evidence enough of it, but if "But people in other parts of the world" bothers you so, your issue is with the makers of these tents who make the same 3 season/4 season marketing claims regardless of who they're marketing them to, not with some dude on the internet who can only weigh those claims against their specific conditions. When I see some guy in the UK calling an MSR with it's 1200mm HH rating a piece of crap, I get it. For him it probably is a piece of crap regardless of how ideally suited it is to people in other parts of the world.

    It seems like they could make some relatively trivial changes to the design and it would still work great for the summer months and only increase the cost marginally. Lowering that back panel in particular to the depth that's on the ends of their Cosmitto tent, for example, would increase airflow without going whole hog on the mesh. The back part of the rainfly also needs to be able to be staked away from the tent body for more ventilation and better drainage in the rain.
    Other than that, it seems like a pretty solid tent that isn't that much heavier than the go-to ULs on the market, and overall the company makes decent tents for budget-conscious people. However, you could spend an extra $40 or so and get a one-person Durston X-Mid that will provide more ventilation and good rain coverage. That's not much a difference in cost for what you get in quality.

  • @danielhurst8863
    @danielhurst8863 18 днів тому +3

    The solid panels do not make any sense, they won't protect against water, and it kills airflow. Is it super taunt at the solid panels and they were afraid the mesh would tear? The cost savings would be trivial, so I'm trying to think why they would hinder airflow so much.

    I get that the one man tents have a market. I even get that a backpacker might want one. But my first thought is... why not just go with the trusty 5 foot by 7 foot A frame trail tent? You are gonna have WAY more room at the floor area. That thing is cute enough, and at least we have an earth tone colour. But I have never understood why, other than WEIGHT, any backpacker would want a one man tent when he can have a two man tent. Weight is the only reasony why ya wouldn't want the two man tent. Couple points here. Anything less than a two man tent? You are risking claustrophobia. It is the casket effect. Secondly, a 2 man tent will HELP the solo backpacker in the sense than he can bring everything inside;-- shoes, backpack, grill, the dog, whatever. In a 5 foot by 7 foot two man trail tent? You have room beside you all the way down the tent. So these one man caskets just don't impress me. What is one or two pounds more, if you can have a shelter that has ROOM?

    Again harping on about the mesh vs fabric. Why? Not everyone lives where you do Luke. Wind is not the same everywhere. Temp is not the same everywhere. I would freeze to death in that thing in the fall and early spring where I live... Summer would be perfect with the fabric removing the wind.

    Hey man, any plans on reviewing the Tarptent Rainbow/Double Rainbow on the channel?
    The Mona, even if ultralight, suffers from what most tents suffer from - the pack size is very big for how small the tent is. I wish ultralight tents were more packable for bikepacking.

    The fabric appears to be at all the clip points for the poles. I would think it would hold up better/ longer than an all mesh body.
    Nylon for weight reduction then it bumps the price? I would like to see a vent on the fly also.

    We seem to have this idea that a 3-season tent has to include X, Y and Z, yet with all their designers, engineers and people watching YT channels, manufacturers simply refuse to do these things? That seems a bit odd.
    I just wonder how much these fabrics cost if you find a place that sells them online. The door(s) would be a little tricky, but it seems like anyone who knows how to use a sewing machine could make a pattern, then just sew the works together to get what they're looking for. As a sort of hybrid idea, they could also just buy an Ozark Trail one for the basic structure, then replace this or that panel as needed. Basically, keep the bathtub floor, then "knock out this wall" and replace with mesh. Maybe it ends up being screen-door mesh, but mesh just the same. 🤣

    • @Im_With_Stupid
      @Im_With_Stupid 17 днів тому

      There is no 3 or 4 season design that's universally applicable. That's the problem.
      You absolutely can make your own tent, but you can't get the materials cheap enough to make it worth the effort, especially if you don't have the skills, tools or room to put it all together. When the OT factory buys fabrics, they buy whole tractor trailer loads of it. Zippers? Pallet loads. Stakes and poles and little plastic hooks and buckles and rolls of seam tape by the thousands. They get it for almost nothing, usually direct from the manufacturer. You, though, you have to pay three or four mark ups on it and don't get the bulk discount.
