Review of Death vs The Twin Dilemma! Billy and Matt discuss the recent 'The Web of Fear Special Edition' release before reviewing 'The Twin Dilemma', the first story of Colin Baker's tenure as the 6th Doctor and final serial of Season 22. Consistently voted the WORST story in Doctor Who history, is it really as bad as people think or did it truly sign the death warrant of Doctor Who in the 1980's?

Planet of Fire and Twin Dilemma should have been swapped around. Twin Dilemma would be a sequel to Frontios, with The Gravis replacing Mestor. And in Planet of Fire the 6th Doctor would have sought out the numismaton gas to help his regeneration. Plus it would showcase the new Doctor's new harsher character by zapping Kamelion and letting the Master burn.

I work at b&m, and I must say you can partially blame the lack of figure release on the fact we are bloody awful at putting stock out. Might have them already... won't see them for a damn fortnight.

The Twin Dilemma is shockingly misconceived, so many bad decisions lumped on top of one another and because of that I find it endlessly fascinating. Colin is so excited and galvanised by being given this role that he loves. I think his energy carries the story.
The BIG issue with the treatment of the Doctor - they give him a regeneration crisis AND they make him unlikeable. You can do one but not both. He comes out of his crisis moments and is still an arsehole - there's no redemption for him. Made worse as Peri has no one to support her and just feels a victim throughout. I think with a TARDIS crew of three companions they could have got away with it as they would have acted as a cushion.
Anthony Steven wrote some excellent adaptations of classic novels. JNT wanted his florid, period stylings. He wasn't a sci-fi writer but then few writers ever were. And Saward wasn't the person to mentor him (not for no reason that a number of writers got turned off working on the show in this period - Christopher Bailey for one). He always never improved scripts when he rewrote things.
Edwin Richfield was in the costume.

That is a valid point! I thought the same for Clara and the 12th Doctor. Clara was struggling with a hard to get along with Doctor on her own. True unlike Peri, she had Danny but he wasn't exactly the easiest person to confide in. She in the way, Clara was stuck in the middle between the two butting heads. It was nice to see 12th loosen up more and become quirkier over the course of series 9 and all of series 10.

I think the context behind the biting was that Peter Davison had played a prank on them. He told Colin that Nicola was a horrible person, same to Nicola about Colin. After a little bit of awkwardness they got to know each other and realised how lovely each other were and then Colin bit her arse as a silly reference to Peter's joke

Happy ending to the "Colin bite Nicola's arse" story: Nicola did confront him on it and they did patch things out. And of course, 30-40 years later they're both really good friends

For all of its flaws (and I do recognise them) I still love The Twin Dilemma. Part of it is pure nostalgia, but I find it a highly enjoyable romp. Your deconstruction of the story is one of the most erudite I have heard. I disagree that the story represents the beginning of the end for Classic Doctor Who, however - I think there were far too many complex contextual factors that brought this about, and I think it harsh to lay the blame at the feet of this one story; I certainly have no truck with any of RTD's opinions about the show. I did worry at one point that your review would simply despise the story just because it isn't 'Caves of Androzani' but you covered a wide range of factors.
(Oh, and it definitely was Edwin Richfield inside the (highly immobile and impractical) Mestor costume).
This podcast has inspired me to do a Why I Love The Twin Dilemma video.
Also, couldn't help smiling mirthlessly at Billy blaming the delay in the CO releases on Brexit. Such sixth form common room politics always makes me smirk (although the sixth formers I teach have much more mature political views than seen here).
I look forward to your Underworld review, as this is one of the very few Classic stories that I truly despise.

Honestly, I don't think I rate Twin Dilemma as the absolute worst. I mean undoubtedly it's bad, it's really bad. But I find it an entertaining bad. It doesn't bore me like Underworld does, it doesn't make me feel physically nauseous like The Web Planet does. I remember my first viewing of it, I had a fun time with it, in spite of how bad it is, I do like watching it.
My gripe with McNally's stupid jacket, it's the one that the Doctor hid the gun's power pack in. In the massive sprawling maze of the tardis, he finds the one room his gun's power pack is in, then chooses the exact garment the power pack is in the pocket of. That is so unlikely.
Also, I think they mention Nicola hitting McNally after the bottom incident on the audio commentary for Twin Dillemma, I haven't actually listned to the commentary on that one myself so I don't know for certain, but I've been told it's mentioned.

    • @Darren79

The dvd commentary is really good. It's one of my favourites. Kevin McNally is almost like a moderator in that he focuses the conversation. They do talk about the bum biting incident - it's all in good humour.

The blame for this lies squarely at the door of Eric Saward. He didn't agree with the casting of Colin and pretty much did all he could to undermine him. IMHO.

Never had a problem with the 6th Doctors costume myself, he's egotistical, loud and very brash so he's bound to wear something distasteful that screams "Look at me, Look at me"!! He's an alien after all. Its only when I got older I realized everyone disliked his costume and I was puzzled. As for his character, I think its fine overall, capaldi did a better job at that sort of character in season 8 but never had an issue with the 6th doctor. Although I do think his run was the weakest of the 80s era sadly

Good lord, JNT must have been completely mad!

    • @Darren79
      @Darren79 2 роки тому +2

@@batmanmarch I think with JNT he was going with the experience of making it. He had a lead actor who was so full of beans (compared to his predecessor who was laid back) - so JNT would have been picking up on his vibe and being excited by that.
I forget who the quote was attributed to but there was someone who worked on Androzani and Twin and he said one production was an utter chaotic mess with a director who didn't have a clue what he was doing and the other was as smooth as anything - his point being he found Twin is a very smooth production to work on. The BBC system of the time wasn't always geared to getting the best - you worked on the programme if you were next available, not because you wanted. And even if JNT requested designers or whoever, the show was low down on the pecking order so he rarely got his wish. I noted on the blu-ray for season 24, he requested three set designers and didn't get any of them.

Writers were not allowed to be the official script editor for their own story. Eric Saward had to bend the rules to write for the show. He put down Antony Root, who had been brought in to find the new script editor for S19, as script editor for the Visitation and Earthshock. He then later put on Robert Holmes for Resurrection of the Daleks and Gerry Davis for Revelation of the Daleks who had a hand in scripts for S21 and S22. He only ever wrote one story a season though because he had too much to do being script editor for six/seven stories including his own, it was just too much

The thing is, with such an incredibly strong final story for a Doctor, you needed an equally strong debut story for his successor. I can't imagine that anyone on the production team for one moment thought this story was it.
This pile of crap should never have made it to air, it should have been canned and Colin should have made his debut in the next season. Easy to say now, I suppose, but the fact they allowed this to go out boggles the mind.

Like the Joe Rogan meets Doctor Who vibe.
