You two inspired me and I just rewatched Planet of the Ood (first time in a decade). I don't think any episode in New Who has done a better job of world building, introducing memorable characters, imprinting a pointed but subtle theme, provided some good companion growth moments and packed plenty of action and pace all in 45 minutes. It was like a classic 4- or 6-parter with all the padding and filler taken out! A Masterclass in 45 minute storytelling!
By the way, I loved both Matt's and Billy's analysis. Looking back at RTD1 is like analyzing classic Who now. More "New" Who reviews please!

I rewatched Planet in prep for this and was thinking how, at the mouth close up of Halpen's transformation, it didn't look like Tim McInnerny at all. Swiftly followed it up with Confidential for Planet and discovered the mouth shot is actually a stand in ~ they used a best boy from production I think? Confidential also has the unused alt. take of the mouth shot, so Billy should seek that out! It's on UA-cam, that's where I watched it 😊😊

Hey Fella's you guys have been reviewing a lot of the 10th Doctor stories I actually like recently and this was one of them. This story I do re-watch from time to time and have always enjoyed it, I like all 3 opening stories from season 4 and think the contrast between this and the previous story works well . Love the new Sonic by the way , it does look like a proper piece of kit, will the 15th Doctor carry on using it or will there be another change for his Doctor ??? Great Review Guys and Hope you're having a nice holiday in Italy Matthew 🙂

1:04:04 On the topic of parallax, another thing that kind of spoils a lot of early New Who's effects shots is when they don't take into account when a shot is going to be comped in to become a small part of the frame in an artificially-widened shot. Suddenly, on this one tiny part of the frame, the perspective is all off, and that's inevitably where the live-action footage starts and the matte painting ends.
One shot that comes to mind is the 'Daleks are the masters of Earth' rally scene from this same season, where the Supreme Dalek and the small section of the room around it just looks disconnected somehow from the main chamber with the flying Daleks. It's the parallax that gives it away as not belonging to the same space.

I remember 2008 for Doctor who was a great year for me. Series 4 is honestly my favourite season of the new series. I do like Planet of the Ood, great story definitely, but my biggest memory from this story i had is no surprise to everyone, but Halpen’s Transformation into a Ood. I remember That scene scared me, that I had to changed the channel over before i flipped it back again. Honestly It’s surprisingly pretty graphic to show and It’s up there as one of my top 5 scariest moments from the show.

The Doctor and Donna get praised by the Ood and get a song - They did nothing!!! They cry a bit but they're spectators. The guy who gets chucked into the brain was the hero playing a long game infiltrating.

Oh bless you for trying but you are right you did get the Scottish councillor place pronunciation wrong. The first part Moni - is more like the painter Monet and then fie - as in paying a 'fee' and finishing off with the normal - th .
But at least you tried ha ha ha.

Fun fact: This episode was rated a 12 by the BBFC, meanwhile there are other episodes of doctor who that are way darker and mature than this episode that are rated PG. But it's still way more mature than most of series 1 of Torchwood, which is all rated 15.

With the mash-up sonic, if it turns out to be a toymaker "this is a meta fanbases perfect amalgamation scenario (10, Donna and her family, possible other doctors)" etc, I think I'd love it even more. Knowing it's not just a mash-up for the sake of it would be cool (though as it's the 60th it would still be totally fine if it were).

I got my sonic in the first week of June, because I was away on holiday the week the rest of the early bunch were sent out, and I was so careful not to let anything leak, I didn't take any photos even for myself, the video I made was filmed after the toy had been announced, just filmed and edited in an afternoon, I was so so careful not to accidentally let anything leak early, then I ended up with someone in the comments of my youtube video angry that my thumbnail was a spoiler because I was holding the new sonic screwdriver, and I just... how is that a fair complaint, the BBC's own video had a full length closeup shot of it, mine was in my hand in a head and shoulders picture of me, it was so small in that thumbnail, a thumbnail for a video about the now announced sonic. I don't think that is a reasonable complaint, I did my utmost to keep it secret when it was a secret, but if they don't want to know things once they've been officially announced then I feel like it's on them to avoid them.

Disney have a big deal with Lego. Hopefully we might get more Doctor Who Lego.

If RTD2 of doctor who is successful enough, Lego might just jump into making doctor who sets for Europe. Perhaps 1 set for an episode of each incarnation of the doctor.

Like Billy I think I only watched it on broadcast, but don't remember being a fan of it and haven't revisited yet.
Also Matt raises a good point about old merch at SDCC. I live near Brighton and earlier in the year a Forbidden Planet International opened there and their Doctor Who merch comprises of the 3.75 figure playsets and some of the 2020 B&M figure sets, I think they even have some of the old Corgi stuff as well!
