I know this video is 6 years old but it has stood the test of time. I can’t afford proper manicures but have been wanting nice shaped and polished nails. This video helped me so much and I did the best manicure today! Thank you!!
I just turned 30 and I've always tried clean up with a qtip and regular polish remover. It doesn't work at all so I usually end up scratching it off and ruining my polish. xD Thanks for the help! :)
Another tip is to take a toothpick while the nail polish is still wet and just swipe it around your nail. I always do that and it creates a line between the polish and the excess. After that I take my clean up brush and clean of any excess that the toothpick didn't get.
Great tip! One for you is to use a napkin or paper towel to wipe your brush on between dipping it into the acetone. This removes the excess polish and keeps your acetone from getting all the residue in it. Works great since you keep it in a container to use again.
To hold your small amount of acetone for clean up, you can also use tiny jam/marmalade jars (the individual portion sizes you get in buffet breakfasts, cafes etc). It's easy to cap it to stop it evaporating between hands. Also, the extra weight of the glass means I'm less likely to knock it and spill it, compared to when I used a plastic lid.
The first time I tried this method, I used nail polish remover and had a difficult time removing the excess polish. The second time I tried, I switched to pure acetone but used a thin, long, rectangular paint brush and had a difficulty creating clean rounded nail polish edges near my cuticle. This time, I used pure acetone as well as a round short concealer brush (I used the Morphe M421 brush) and my nail polish looks FANTASTIC. Minus some polish that seeped under my cuticles, my nails look so clean, polished, and professionally done (as pro for someone like me who sucks at applying polish to my nails without getting it all over my fingers lol). I thought it’d be difficult cleaning up my nails using my non-dominant hand, but it was still very doable! Thanks so much for this video Kelli. I went from picking off the excess polish on my skin in the shower, risking chipping my nails by doing so, as well as having messy polish near/on my cuticles so it was obvious I amateurly painted my nails at home lol, to having the cleanest and most polished nails I’ve ever had right after finishing painting my nails. Seriously game changing!!
I used to use the Elf concealer brush, but I've found that a small (1/4") angled art brush works even better for me. I'm glad you shared that you do cleanup just before your polish is completely dry. When I first started, I thought I had to cleanup immediately while the polish was still wet, but that made more of a mess it seemed. Letting the polish have some drying time before doing cleanup was revolutionary as far as the results I got...best tip someone ever shared with me! Clean up makes such a difference in elevating a manicure from "amateur" to "professional" in my opinion. Thanks for sharing.
+Debbie Haney I agree completely, Debbie! Just taking the one step of cleaning up right before your manicure dries makes a huge difference in the quality of the manicure :) I'm glad you enjoyed the video!

I think these are so simple and awesome for beginners to nail polish... Just quick tips.. Sometimes is I am trying to find a simple hack or how-to, there's a 20 minute video about a bunch of other hacks when I just need one. I love that these are short, to the point, and yet packed with information

+Madison M oh my gosh Madison I'm so happy to hear this!! I'm so happy you're enjoying my videos :) and I love doing simple nail art looks that look super complex - I bet you would do a great job with those!
I wanted to thank you again for your tips on making polish last. I bought everything except the dehidrator (have to go to beauty supply). I followed all the other steps. The base coat really seams to have helped. Were before I had chips in my polish they next day this time it lasted and I did do dishes without gloves with no chips. Your the greatest.
+Diana Pulido I'm so glad to hear that you've found improvement already, Diana! You can also try swiping some polish remover on your nail before you apply the polish until you are able to get the dehydrator :)
I like using an angled eyebrow brush for cleanup. I find it gets into every little crevice. I had to learn the hard way that regular nail polish remover does not work and makes more of a mess.

+drummerlovermakeup haha oh my gosh you are so sweet! I honestly don't even remember what eyeshadows specifically I used, but I would guess it was from the NYX Love Contours All palette - I'm obsessed with it lately! ❤️
so glad you showed me what brush you use! I took your advice & ran to my local Kmart ( they were sold out in every other store in town) & got ALL the elf concealer brushes they had in stock, which was only 3 but... they work amazingly! I just hope I can continue to find them. my husband asked me why I needed 3 of the same brush while we were standing in line to check out, (I'm assuming bc i ran from the makeup section to the checkout lane in the middle of his transaction, ) so I explained it to him that I use them as nail polish clean up brushes & that they have to be replaced every couple months bc they aren't made to do that but @ $1 each I don't mind buying replacements... he just smiled & said "ok hunny. do you need more? ... go get more" (he didn't know I had grabbed all their was. ..lol.)
+Amber Rhoades haha Amber! Your husband sounds like a good man. I'm the exact same, whenever I see them in stores I just buy all the ones they have in stock hahaha!
this is really helpful thank u!! i just finished sloppily painting my nails with my leftie (im a righty 😭) and i fortunately have that same concealer brush which i never really needed but now i can put it to use :)
Thank you so much for this!! Two quick questions: 1) If you have several layers on top of each other, do you do this with every layer or wait until the last one? 2) Do you wait until the paint is dry before going in with the brush?
Yay! PS online they said they were in stock, but I couldn't find them on the shelf at Target...15 minutes of wrangling later the person who worked there finally went in the back and and found them. Totally worth it!!
I like to use an orangewood stick to scrape any polish I can before my acetone. I cannot imagine applying polish sloppily on purpose, I am WAY too much of a perfectionist!!! Hate anything in my cuticles!
I know this video is old but I needed this since the pandemic I decided to start on a journey of doing my own nails and this help’s because I always struggle doing the left hand and then I’m left with messy nails .. thanks for sharing
Gel polish and acetone are both quite harsh to the skin, as you can see in this video: Before Gel&Acetone --> 2:08 After Gel&Acetone --> 3:09 (Best seen in a big screen) The cuticle oil partly repairs the damage, but not completely (3:18). So, the best way is still to be as careful as possible not to touch the skin.
@@KelliMarissa it's an accurate representation of my first time painting nails. I'm a slot better at it now, thanks to all the helpful nail UA-camrs out there like you. :)
Nice idea for the odd messy nail, but would take forever for all. Nail polish guards are easier, they slip on your finger and cover the skin on both sides of the nail while you apply the polish/varnish
I do this after every manicure and it's actually pretty quick once you get the hang of it! Maybe takes a minute in total for all ten nails, but to be fair I dont make as much of a mess as I did in this example haha.
I use an orange wood stick. I dip it in nail polish remover, swirl a small bit of cotton onto the end, dip it in nail polish remover again and use it to clean around my nails. That's how they do it in Brazil. Works very well.
so glad I found your channel! you probably made a video but I'll ask anyway... my nails always split and peel and idk why. just wondering if you have any idea
+Tora Engberg hey Tora! Welcome :) it's funny you ask because I did just film a video on how to strengthen your nails - it will probably go up the week after Christmas! I hope you find it helpful :)
The only thing I do differently is wipe the nail polish that I get on my brush onto a paper towel so I don't cloud the acetone. Then I dip it back in the acetone for the next swipe. I use the Elf $1 brushes too, but I get the eyeliner ones. I need to stock up again soon!
I was so glad you use cuticle oil or lotion around your nails after cleaning up with the acetone. :) I will be purchasing the elf brushes for this great time. Thanks Kelli :) ~*Shana signing out
first off ILY 💕 but i have a question. Do you have that chrome powder stuff for nails and if so does it work on regular nail polish or just gel nails and can you do a video with it?
Up until now I used an eyeliner brush (which is huge in comparison to the concealer ones). As it is reaching the end of its life, I might actually replace it with a concealer brush. Thanks for the tip!
Kelli Marissa it's so true! with the eyeliner brush there are crevices in the nail you can't reach, and there's always the risk of cleaning too much by accident, over all near the cuticle area
polishmesopretty Dark polishes ESPECIALLY dark reds are kind of a monstrosity to clean up honestly because they stain your skin and stain cracks in your cuticles you didn't even know you had haha
+polishmesopretty they will eventually clean off but like Ciara said, some of them (like reds) can be kind of a nightmare haha so it's good to try to be extra careful with painting with them. One thing I like to do is wipe the cuticle area clean with acetone, wash my hands, and do it again for dark colors.
Hey Kelli, not sure if you've talked about this before in another video but do you use pure acetone as polish remover (for taking off all the polish I mean) or "normal" remover with/without acetone? And I've seen these acetone/glycerine DIY remover recipes around, is that something you do? As always, love your videos :)
Kelli I just discovered you a few weeks ago and I LOVE your videos! Thank you so much for your fun ideas 😘 Question: you mentioned in this video that the concealer brush doesn't last you very long. Why is that? I recently purchased one just like the one you have from target and was hoping that with gentle/normal use it would last me a year or so. Is it bcs the bristles start to shed? Or why?
Hey Pamela, so happy you're enjoying the content so far :) The brushes I use have glue that starts to disintegrate/fall apart after too much exposure to acetone which makes the bristles fall out, but I've been more careful with dipping lately to make sure they aren't getting too wet!
I find that non-acetone doesn't clean up the cuticles as well! Acetone can be drying but I always finish my manicure with cuticle oil which helps remoisturize them!
Let’s say you cured your sheer pink gel nails and are now using a white gel color over the nails for a French tip and you want to clean up the white tip. Acetone will ruin the pink coat under it. What do I use?
I just use Q Tips, since I have a large box of those around, I just grab a hand full! I fill the nail polish remover lid and use that small amount! Which works out better!
I’ve been using a #8 sable brush for YEARS, which works ok, but it holds too much acetone (i.e., it floods the nailbed so you’re left with a tinge of color around the nail).
+Gina Mae haha it's from Forever 21! I'm OBSESSED with their chokers cause they're so insanely cheap. I just bought like 5 more yesterday cause they had a sale, I bet they'll have another one for Cyber Monday too!
The shower concept does works if you do your nails a day or two before your big day out, but that doesn’t work with gel nail polish - best to clean up as you go.
Thanks for the note about the regular nail polish not doing the same job as 100% acetone. I thought I was going nuts when mine wouldn't work like yours! Love sharing your videos with my 11 year old daughter - these beginner tips are helping her in ways I never could! #TeachEmEarly
+Elizabeth G. Haha yesss I'm glad she's enjoying!! :) and I've gotten that question a lot from people (why regular polish isn't working!) so I'm glad I got a chance to address it!
I'm an OLD guy who was feeling low and had my nails done in matte black. I tried to touch them up and made a mess, especially the right hand. This video helped a lot! Embarrassed to even be looking at this! Who would have ever thought!😀. Any tips for a right-hander, trying to paint or cleanup the right fingernails? Used a gell. After removing, I have black in the nail beds and cuticles and cannot get it out. Looks HORRID!😴
Ooh black is a tough one because it really stains the cuticles haha! You could look into ordering some nail barriers like liquid latex (or even just put Scotch tape over your cuticles!) And see if that helps next time? PS don't ever be embarrassed to look things up 😁 I'm always happy to help how I can!!
Hey! Thanks for this, I watched this and your liquid latex sub. video....you saved me time and money! I tried using a brush for the first time for clean up, it was easy and had good results!
I would give another add-on tip to that: instead of dissolving the polish in the container, I just wipe it off on a regular paper towel, or even a cotton pad (the not-so-fluffy side of it!) - then I can just dip into the acetone bottle without getting it all muddy, and it's also a little faster than just dissolving! (Since I do a lot of stamping, I always have a paper towel lying under the plates anyway... This is how I learnt this trick :D )
U could put tape around the edge and bottom part of nail then paint them and excess nail polish gets on the tape instead of skin so u can take it off when u r done
Haha yes i used to always clean it in the shower or wash my hands lol this is way better and it makes the nail polish look a lot more clean and neat... love the video ❤️❤️
Do you not get shrinkage on the sides later that day or the next after cleaning up with acetone? I've tried for years to find a method or tutorial on how to prevent this to no avail. I think the acetone from cleanup gets mixed with the polish and it shrinks away from the edges anywhere from 1-3mm and looks bad to the point where I feel compelled to redo it. It doesn't always happen but it's frequent enough to be a problem. The only way I can avoid it is to wipe of most of the acetone from the cleanup brush but then I don't get as crisp of a line and as clean of cuticles. Any advice?
+qveenissac hey, the only time I've ever experienced shrinkage was from using a specific kind of top coat! Which top coat are you using? Maybe it's causing the shrinkage?
Kelli Marissa maybe "shrinkage" was the wrong term bc everyone associates it with topcoats like Seche (which ironically Seche never shrinks on me). I just meant that when I use a brush and acetone, anywhere from a couple hours to the next day I notice some of nail polish (next to the edges of skin I cleaned) have thinned almost like as if the acetone is mixing with the polish and thinning it, despite my best efforts to NOT flood my nail edges with acetone from the brush (I even dab the brush off on tp before I clean up). I've tried it without topcoat and get the same issue :/ So annoying!

Acetone melts certain plastic containers. make sure the container isn't soluble in acetone. well ventilated area etc.
+Dineen Serpa yes those are great points!

I don't use acrylics so I'm not sure, sorry!
Up until now I used an eyeliner brush (which is huge in comparison to the concealer ones). As it is reaching the end of its life, I might actually replace it with a concealer brush. Thanks for the tip!
+Daniela Sarmiento I used to use an eyeliner brush too! Once I found out about this one I threw it out haha it's so much better!
Kelli Marissa it's so true! with the eyeliner brush there are crevices in the nail you can't reach, and there's always the risk of cleaning too much by accident, over all near the cuticle area
I must be the weirdo then. ;) I prefer the bigger eyeliner brushes. I've used smaller ones and always go back to the eyeliner brush. LOL
Loooove your lacy choker!! Will you share where I can get one?? Thanks in advance! 😘
+Rei Denise hey Rei! I bought it from Forever 21, they have the best/cheapest chokers!
Great tip! I was just wondering if you get the same result when you use a dark color polish?
polishmesopretty Dark polishes ESPECIALLY dark reds are kind of a monstrosity to clean up honestly because they stain your skin and stain cracks in your cuticles you didn't even know you had haha
Kelli Marissa thank you I'll give that a try. 😊
Kelli!! Where did you get your choker?! So cool!
I get them from Forever 21 haha!
I love the color that you used in this video as the example! What is it called?
+Katie Wolin hey thanks Katie! I don't remember the name haha but I do remember that it's by the brand LVX!
The ELF concealer brush began to dissolve in the Mineral Nail Polish remover. Decided to buy a better brush. My nails look nice and neat though!
would you happen to remember the name of the blue polish you used for the demo? it's so pretty!
+firepianosushi ooh I THINK it was China Glaze At Vase Value?
aaah thanks for letting me know!
After you dip the brush in acetone, do you dab it on a napkin to absorb the excess liquid, or just immediately start cleaning?
+Alien Person you can definitely dab it onto a napkin, I actually usually just lightly dab it on the skin above my nail haha
Hey Kelli, not sure if you've talked about this before in another video but do you use pure acetone as polish remover (for taking off all the polish I mean) or "normal" remover with/without acetone? And I've seen these acetone/glycerine DIY remover recipes around, is that something you do?
As always,love your videos :)
+sídhe wen hey! For cleanup I use pure acetone, but for regular removal, I use normal Remover with acetone (mine has vitamin e in it too!) ❤️
What is that tiffany blue color you used in the video? It's gorgeous!
+Brooke Shadley oh gosh I don't totally remember but it could have been China Glaze At Vase Value?
Okay thanks! Love your videos!
Kelli I just discovered you a few weeks ago and I LOVE your videos! Thank you so much for your fun ideas 😘
Question: you mentioned in this video that the concealer brush doesn't last you very long.
What tool was used to clean the nail polish ❤
Where did you get your polish holder? It is awesome!
+Kalliopie Lock thank you so much! My BF made it for me :)
Is the acestone not super harsh and drying on your cuticles? How do you feel about non-acetone removers?
I find that non-acetone doesn't clean up the cuticles as well! Acetone can be drying but I always finish my manicure with cuticle oil which helps remoisturize them!
hi Kelly. just wondering about a top coat for foils. do you have to get something special
+Tanya Grant a water based top coat should work :) I know What's Up Nails sells some!
Kelli Marissa thanks so much!!!❤
whoohoo! My nails are gonna be bangin!
Who makes the red fingernail polish you are wearing and what is its name? Thanks. I enjoyed your video.
+kayanney it's Red Red Wine by Little Ondine :) I am glad you enjoyed!!
Let’s say you cured your sheer pink gel nails and are now using a white gel color over the nails for a French tip and you want to clean up the white tip. Acetone will ruin the pink coat under it. What do I use?
Awesome trick! Thank you so much for sharing!! 😍😍😍
I just use Q Tips, since I have a large box of those around, I just grab a hand full! I fill the nail polish remover lid and use that small amount! Which works out better!
That’s a smart idea!
i didn't have a brush, so i just used a q-tip....but thanks it helped me!
That’s a good one to use too!!
What are you applying on your nail paints and clean the unwanted nail paints stain plz tell me
In Brazil we use a woodypick with some coton with acetone to clean the excess
That’s a good idea too!
I’ve been using a #8 sable brush for YEARS, which works ok, but it holds too much acetone (i.e., it floods the nailbed so you’re left with a tinge of color around the nail).
More recently I've been using the KBShimmer cleanup brush and it's been a game changer! Such good quality.
Great video! This was so helpful!
+h_abla yay I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
Love the choker! Where is it from? Going to start my holiday shopping 😅
+Gina Mae haha it's from Forever 21! I'm OBSESSED with their chokers cause they're so insanely cheap. I just bought like 5 more yesterday cause they had a sale, I bet they'll have another one for Cyber Monday too!
Kelli Marissa thanks!
+Kelli Marissa regular polish remover**
Glad you found my tips helpful, Steph! :)
+Olga Barshay oh that makes a ton of sense! Thanks for sharing, Olga :)
U could put tape around the edge and bottom part of nail then paint them and excess nail polish gets on the tape instead of skin so u can take it off when u r done
Yes that’s a good idea!
Haha yes i used to always clean it in the shower or wash my hands lol this is way better and it makes the nail polish look a lot more clean and neat... love the video ❤️❤️
+Virginiaaaxo lol you're not the only one! Lots of my friends do that too haha. I'm glad you liked the video!
Nice video how do you clean up a gel manicure at home?
Thanks for the tip on the Elf brush!! I'm starting to stock up now!!👍🏽❤😁
They're so good!
This is the first time seeing one of your videos and i have already subbed. I love this vid its so helpful. Love your eyeshadow btw❤
Oh gosh thanks so much Ellie, and welcome to my channel :)
Thank you for this
+RGLover641 hey! Welcome to my channel :) and yes definitely! I'm so sloppy with my pedicures haha this trick is a lifesaver!
i use the exact same brush!!!!!!!!! its the best brush ever to clean up nail polish!!
+Hsuan Chen it's just perfect! I've never felt a need to try any other haha!
Yes, this was helpful and right to the point. Thank you.
I'm so happy it helped Leza!!
I so needed this!!! My brush doesnt pick it up all the time.. So then it like becomes waterynailpolish on my fingers 😖
Oh geez happy to help! :)
Does the same method apply for gel polish?
thanks so much im super new to this and this helps a lot
I'm so happy you found it helpful :)
