My best tip for pushing back cuticles: a pencil eraser. I keep a few brand-new, unused pencils around so that any time I feel like it, I can push my cuticles back with the eraser. It’s easiest after a shower, or washing my face, when the cuticles are damp and pliable, but when they’re totally dry, I can still use the eraser (it’s good and grippy!) as it can “erase” those bits of stubborn cuticle simply by rubbing back and forth over the dry, stubborn part. Works on toenails, too.

I have found that it's easiest to polish my non-dominant hand first and let it fully dry. Then I polish my dominant hand by using my dominant hand to load the brush. Then I switch hands, place both elbows on a (protected) table, and polish my dominant hand's nails by moving my dominant hand toward the brush, rather than trying to move my non-dominant hand holding the brush toward my dominant hand's nails. Also, I always polish from the pinky to the thumb. That way my most dexterous fingers are polished last so there is less time I have to be very careful. I even use this method to sculpt my own acrylic nails.

Here’s a tip, in Brazil (where I’m from) we paint our nails even the skin and when we take a shower it all comes off. So I recommend a Brazilian nail polish 💅
Apart from having a enough steady hand to apply the polish correctly, the thing I struggle the most is tip #6 - either not removing enough excess polish from the brush removing too much, so I get very uneven results. I can’t just seem to be able to paint nice thin layers.
I like to decrease the rate of time it takes for my nails to dry by dipping my wet nails into an ice water bath for a few seconds about 1 minute after each coat is applied. Just a little warning: sometimes bubbles appear if the nails are inserted into the water bath too soon after applying the coat of polish. Tip: Blow on your nails right after you bring them out of the water bath to help your nails dry even more.
You are a very good teacher. I appreciated the pace at which you spoke, the lessons you gave, and just your voice in general. I will definitely try tips. Thank you so much; looking forward to more videos!
@@ghostcrimez9016 Male musicians all the way back in the 70s and guys who were into punk and heavy metal in the 80s and grunge in the 90s all wore nail polish. Granted, it was usually black nail polish, but it was pretty common to see at least in music and art circles. My point really is just that someone can be a man who likes more feminine things or a woman who likes more masculine things. It's totally normal and most people don't fall 100% into gender norms at all times.
Been painting my own nails for years but learned a lot from this video including wiping my nails with alcohol first, using cool water, using a wooden stick for clean up and the slated brush for clean up. Thanks so much!!
As a pro, I love watching these videos. Finally, someone who just uses a brush to clean up! Lol The wooden stick just doesn't do it. I would never use it. But only other tip is to alcohol wipe THEN 100% pure acetone, wipe them, then bond aid, then base coat, etc. You want it to stick? Pure acetone and bond aid will guarantee it! It's my personal 3 step cleanse I use on everyone.
Tip: if you get any on your fingers and don't feel like clean up, or you ran out of remover or are running low, you can grab a washcloth, wash your hands while rubbing at the area with the polish on the skin. I did this and it works really well!
The first tip would be useful if the skin around my cuticles wasn't messed up. Each finger has a different shape which also impacts length, and I can't fix it, so my manicures always look kinda messy. I hate it, but it was what I was born with. 😓
Mine too! file each nail according to its own cuticle. If the cuticle is rounded then the nail is rounded, if the cuticle is square then the nail is square. It actually looks perfect I guess because you are following the exact shape of each nail it comes together. Also it has helped my nails stay strong and grow long. I use to try to make it look all the same but every time it would look like ass...but with this method my nails look professional. Good luck
You could try liquid latex, if you put it around your nails before you start painting them and take it off when you're done no polish will get on your skin
Love your video--so many great tips! Another tip I have is to not apply too much pressure when applying top coat, especially with a design, so you don't smudge your design!
I love using the nail polish "Hard as Nails" by Sally Hansen in a variety of colors because they last a good amount of time and can be purchased at various stores. 💅
A trick: paint over the edges. One layer. Then have a soaking bath. The excess varnish will simply come off, nicely, tidily and perfectly. Then apply a second coat, if necessary. Oil before painting? Not so sure, as oils and oily formulae double-act as nail varnish, you just wanna try it!
The alcohol tip really is a game changer. I remember I used to have this little set from Sephora that came with a base coat, top coat, actual color coat, and a “prep” coat. Even though I wasn’t really a fan of the color from that set, I used that prep coat all the time…and then was so sad when it was almost empty, and I couldn’t find any more. I did some research and figure out it was pretty much just plain rubbing alcohol in a nail polish bottle, and I’ve been using rubbing alcohol ever since. My manicures (and especially my pedicures for some reason) last so much longer now!
I had the same issue and bought Glisten and Glow Dry Prep. I use it before the base coat and before a nail touch up. I decided that it’s mostly alcohol and will refill the bottle when empty with Alcohol. I like using a brush rather that risk cotton fibers from a Q tip. 6:14
1. Use the bathroom BEFORE you start painting, as well as between each coat of polish. 2. Pray that you don't end up needing the bathroom between fingers. 3. Have a stable surface to put your bottle of polish on, or you will stress about the possibility of it messing up and ruining something to the point that your hands shake and you mess up your nails. anyways. 4. Lastly, and most importantly, tell people if you're about to paint your nails or they'll get annoyed when they come looking for your and find out you're doing so.
Wow that was great! Thank you. I did know them, mostly (learned through many years of agonizing trial and error) but this is the best video I have seen. Your tips are well-worded and I like the speed at which you talk. Thanks for posting.
I have this weird thing where the skin around my nails is quite raised, so no matter what I do, I always get polish on my skin, especially when I'm painting the sides. Is this just me? 😂
I'm not sure but it sounds like you're describing curved nails which can give the impression of "raised" skin around the nail bed. I have quite curved nails myself and I combat it by stretching the skin as I paint. I lay each finger on it's edge and while adding pressure I roll it one way or the other (depending on which side of the nail I'm painting) to stretch it out so I can get my whole nail covered without touching the skin. I leave it like that for about 10 secs so that it doesn't squish back and defeat the purpose. Obviously this only works with relatively fast drying polishes. xD Hope that helps!
Try Elmer's glue around nail beds and peel off once nails are dry, I have Multiple Sclerosis & shakey hands at times so this trick works when having a bad day, I love to Polish my nails this trick works wonders 😉
Great tips! Orly Bonder is another great base coat and is usually under $10. It actually creates a tacky finish; which helps my polish to not only adhere but also prolong the wear. I have oily skin; which also means I have oily nail beds. I use 91% alcohol before applying my Orly Bonder, follow up with 2 coats of polish and then the Seche Vive Instant Gel Top Coat (no lamp curing required). I will have to check out the Maxus brand now and see if it works better than what I currently use. 😊
I use the same Orly bonder (it’s orange) and I love it. I used seche vite forever but it gets so gloppy :(. I started using the sally hanson top coat from the argan oil line and I’m loving it
Thanks for the recommendation for the Seche Vive. They sell it in my John Lewis, where I have a gift voucher, so will try. I have seen it around, but the reviews for it are fab.
I second the orly bonder but superchic laquer makes a GREAT topcoat. Stuff dries so fast it's insane, and it doesn't get gloppy either. I bought a giant refill bottle so I'm set on topcoat forever
Yes! I know this is an old comment, but back in the day I had one of those colors and loved it for the brush. It was also a one coater and I loved it for the name (I Need a Refresh-mint) but this was before I was into the hobby. Thanks for reminding me of the brand!
I didn't know I needed this, I just always gave up on painting my nails. I need to try this top/bottom coat, I love OPI and Sinful Colors (same company), but I HATE the base/top coats. My nail polish would literally peel off like stickers in the shower.
Thank you!! Ive been going nuts trying to figure out why i get nail bubbles. it always looked like I put sand in my polish lol, Now I know why it happens and how to prevent it. Woohoo happy happy happy!!!!
You might be applying it too thick! It has happened to me too. The trick is finding the right balance with your brush to paint ratio over time and practice. BUT start slowly with layers! In this video, she shows two (obvi), but try to do light, even layers, letting them dry fully in between applications. Light and even helps with lumpiness and pooling! Hope this helped :)
Thx for the vid, some great tips I actually don't worry about getting polish round the skin on my fingers now. I rub in some coconut oil before I start and wait til it all dries... then it just peels or flakes off from the places it shouldn't be.
Another fat great brush is Nina's from Sallys not a huge color choice.. But love their brush, fat, shorter brissels! I will also clean old bottle out to add a favorite to. Just clean well 1st with pure acetone!
She is a great instructor! This tutorial was easy and fun to follow! Never thought of using an angle brush dipped in polish remover to clean the edges of nail. Top Coat is a Must!
Latex Barrier helps for beginners so that they can just peel it off from the skin. I remember when I was still learning, the brush would always end up removing nail polish from the nail as well
Love this video. Do you have on how to shape nails? I don't know how to shape them very well; is there some sort of nail shaping guide/instrument to help shape nails?
I found that if I apply the first coat thin and let it dry before I apply a second coat I don’t get bubbles. Also you don’t need a heavy second coat. Also in this video she says the temperature matters I think that’s true! I wipe with acetone right before and the acetone is cool on my nails and that might be what has helped me now and I don’t get bumps or bubbles.
I see many people in the comments still discussing the issue about their non-dominant hand - First, it does take practice. Second, Always place your hand on a steady surface like a table with a good light source as led table lamps are super cheap. The Table will give you significantly more stability in doing this job and a paper towel under your hand keeps the table from getting nail polish on it. It completely stabilizes your hand. If you believe you totally mess up there is a paint on latex to use on the skin around the nail as a cuticle guard for those who know they will always get it on their skin and the latex is painted on the skin around the nail/cuticle area and then once the nail is painted you pull the latex off and it removes the extra paint - please do before the paint has dried or before the clear top coat is applied.
Use some liquid latex around your nails to avoid getting polish on your skin. If you're allergic to latex, use a nail apron to protect the outside of your nail.
*heres an actual tip:* plan when you wanna do your nails and do them the day before you have a free day. do the nails as messy and carefree as you want, obviously do it nicely, i just mean that if you get some on your finger, dont worry. in less than a day, the excess polish around your nails and on your fingers will eventually start peeling off on its own, if you wanna help, pull it with some tweezers. (plus its pretty satisfying lol) it comes out looking perfect!
Can I just say this video is so helpful. No Matter how many times I tried I could never get my nails like yours. When I watched this video it explained what I'm forgetting to do.
This is what I've started using on my cuticles. I don't feel like I have to hide my hands anymore! 10 ml roller bottle...like for essential oil, or clean, empty nail polish bottle...be sure either are clean and dry. Add 15 drops of Lavender essential oil Add 10 drops of eucalyptus essential oil Add 10 drops of grapefruit essential oil. Add 5 drops peppermint essential oil Add 1 ml vitamin E oil. I use a marked dropper for this. Fill the rest of the bottle with fractionated coconut oil. Put roller cap and lid on bottle or screw the brush into the nail polish bottle. Gently shake until blended. Gently shake before each use I started with scaling down the eo's by half, since I didn't know how sensitive my skin would be. I use this formula now and have a bottle in my bedroom and living room. (I don't sell essential oils :)

This is really helpful! Though I think a big part of my problem is that I have a tremor in my hands so it makes it near impossible to keep steady when doing my nails, especially my finger nails. However, I'll definitely be using some of these tips for when I paint my toenails!
Great tips. I'll definitely gonna try that cold water tip next time :) One thing that I sometimes do is use Clean&start nail cleanser by essence. And sometimes I add more top coat after few days, but not always.
That push on proximal nail fold gave me extreme anxiety 🙂 Just paint your nail and after 20 minutes dip your hand in warm water for two minutes and wash it with handwash. Paint on skin doesn't bothers me so I don't do this , I just get it removed on its own while m taking bath
My problem is that I have arthritis in my hands, and wrists. So I can't apply polish in the same way you do. My hand is straight out in front of me and my other hand is at an angle. This does not bode well for not getting polish on the skin. However, I am getting better and managed this week to apply very dark red polish with minimal poish to the skin. I have really small nails and most brushes are too big. My favourite at the moment is Revlon Clean polish in solid colours. It's meant to be one coat, but frankly it looks a bit patchy if you catch the light so I always do two coats. I've tried OPI and I don't like it at all.
Really see I always loved the look of clean polished nails on girls or boys as long as it's done well.. I never did mine till I found the matte top coat. I think that just looks a little better on men than a shiny finish. But for me the gel polish is so much easier to work with. You just can't flood the brush out cause it runs down real real quick with the gel in my experiences. This is for Juli what do you think about using melted wax. Dip your finger tips in the wax and remove it only from your nails.. Then when your finished just pull it all off.
Take it slowly and practice. That's really the only advice to give. I think everyone's non dominant had is a tad messier no matter how much practice they get! You can always clean up with a Q-Tip (or brush as the vid said).
Try doing everything with your non-dominant hand for a couple of weeks. Brush your teeth, cutting, everything, you will be amazed how quickly you learn how to use this other hand. And just practice.
My most helpful tip is to go to the toilet BEFORE you start painting. I always wreck my polish because I have to pee before it's properly dry 💅🏻🚽 🙊

Apart from having a enough steady hand to apply the polish correctly, the thing I struggle the most is tip #6 - either not removing enough excess polish from the brush removing too much, so I get very uneven results. I can’t just seem to be able to paint nice thin layers.
I am a retired hairdresser and you gave an excellent presentation. Better than most I have seen.
Bless you for sharing this info, Imma try this rn
You are a very good teacher. I appreciated the pace at which you spoke, the lessons you gave, and just your voice in general. I will definitely try tips. Thank you so much; looking forward to more videos!
As a born male I was never taught how to do it, and now Ive realized I’m non binary and I’m finally learning lmao. Thanks for teaching me
STOP THIS IS SO ADORABLE
I'm in the same boat lol. Hope you get good results my friend
Men can and do wear nail polish.
@@simfimpim yeah but around the times when i was born up until around 2 years ago, it was sorta not that big and considered taboo
It's totally normal and most people don't fall 100% into gender norms at all times.
which brand of nail polish do u use ? It looks clean and has no patches after applying 😳
Been painting my own nails for years but learned a lot from this video including wiping my nails with alcohol first, using cool water, using a wooden stick for clean up and the slated brush for clean up. Thanks so much!!
Hi! Should i apply top coat while my nails wet or no? And same with base am i suppose to wait until its dry?
As a pro, I love watching these videos. Finally, someone who just uses a brush to clean up! Lol
The wooden stick just doesn't do it.
Good luck
nonsensicaldreamer/just-4-teh-lulz same😭😖
You could try liquid latex, if you put it around your nails before you start painting them and take it off when you're done no polish will get on your skin
Same 😣
Use the coconut oil!! It help repair them.
that was so helpful, thanks JauntyJuli!
Sally hansen miracle gel is the best!
There were a couple things I didn’t even know you needed to do in this vid! Thank youuuuuuu!!
The eyeliner brush!! Genius!!
As a male who loves painting nails (I find it therapeutic) THANK YOU..... I WOULD USUALLY PAINT EVERYTHING AROUND BESIDE MY NAIL!!! :D
The tip about the eyeliner brush is totally awesome!!!
I have this weird thing where the skin around my nails is quite raised, so no matter what I do, I always get polish on my skin, especially when I'm painting the sides. Is this just me? 😂
TheTogaParty22 nope I have the same problem and no solution 😛
I'm not sure but it sounds like you're describing curved nails which can give the impression of "raised" skin around the nail bed. I have quite curved nails myself and I combat it by stretching the skin as I paint. I lay each finger on it's edge and while adding pressure I roll it one way or the other (depending on which side of the nail I'm painting) to stretch it out so I can get my whole nail covered without touching the skin. I leave it like that for about 10 secs so that it doesn't squish back and defeat the purpose. Obviously this only works with relatively fast drying polishes. xD
Hope that helps!
TheTogaParty22 LOL Same gurlll
Try Elmer's glue around nail beds and peel off once nails are dry, I have Multiple Sclerosis & shakey hands at times so this trick works when having a bad day, I love to Polish my nails this trick works wonders 😉
TheTogaParty22 I like to do nail art but that’s the same for my ring finger
Can you use a top coat as a base if you don’t own a base coat?
Anything is better than nothing, but base coats dry a little sticky in order to help the polish adhere.
@@AngelinaX23 ah, ok
She is getting paid to promote the Maxus brand. I knew that even before she mentioned the coupon.
I use the same Orly bonder (it’s orange) and I love it. I used seche vite forever but it gets so gloppy :(. I started using the sally hanson top coat from the argan oil line and I’m loving it
I have the Orly products. Very good. I'm still not good at painting my short, pulled-off, bitty nails, though, but want to do them for NYE this year.
Thanks for your help! I now use coconut oil for my cuticles!
I'm an OPI addict, but I really love the Wet n Wild MegaLast polish (under $3 at Dollar General). The brush is a wonderful shape.
My favourite tip is rinsing the hands with cold water. Ive never heard of that before and I will defenetely try that next time I paint my nails 😊
Rehhörnchen I know I’m super late but all it does is smudge it around
Thank you!! Ive been going nuts trying to figure out why i get nail bubbles. it always looked like I put sand in my polish lol, Now I know why it happens and how to prevent it. Woohoo happy happy happy!!!!
Also I've noticed if the ambient temperature is high, bubbles are more likely.
I'm a guy who loves wearing it but I just can't get it to look good it always goes lumpy :(
You might be applying it too thick!
Find a polish which says nail lacquer on the bottle, they're usually more gel like and hard to make lumpy.
Use thin layers and buy brands with broad brushes
If it's lumpy, the nail polish may be old.
if its REALLY lumpy, the nail polish is probably expired.
Amazing tips. Resting your hand on a solid surface helps a lot with the handshake. We used to practice that in dentistry.
Thx for the vid, some great tips
I actually don't worry about getting polish round the skin on my fingers now. I rub in some coconut oil before I start and wait til it all dries... then it just peels or flakes off from the places it shouldn't be.
Good tips but you can also use acetone as a primer to remove oil and residue from nails and can you link your clean up brush
I'm curious, have you used the Maxus Strengthener 2.0? I wonder how it compares to the normal Maxus base coat?
Your nails are sooo gorge!! Have you done one about how you shape your nails as well??
Wait a minute. You rub coconut oil over your entire nail AFTER you are done? Does that not dull your polish?
Another fat great brush is Nina's from Sallys not a huge color choice.. But love their brush, fat, shorter brissels! I will also clean old bottle out to add a favorite to. Just clean well 1st with pure acetone!
Kinda funny how Im applying nail polish from Ninas onto my nails while reading this 😂
My favorite is Morgan Taylor...also from Sally's
Great video but I was hoping for information to help me do my non-dominant hand. Any videos to help with that. Thanks
Tip 11- Just practice! Nail art gets easier and better everytime!!
Okay. So how do you KEEP polish on your nails? I painted mine yesterday and it's ALREADY chipping!
She is a great instructor! This tutorial was easy and fun to follow! Never thought of using an angle brush dipped in polish remover to clean the edges of nail. Top Coat is a Must!
That blue color is beautiful!
So here's a question everytime I cap my free edge it creates an air bubble under the polish what could I do to change this
Try capping your tips first, before applying polish to the rest of the nail. See if that helps!
This is 100% one of the MOST helpful videos I have ever watched plz don’t stop making vids like these!!
*heres an actual tip:*
plan when you wanna do your nails and do them the day before you have a free day.
do the nails as messy and carefree as you want, obviously do it nicely, i just mean that if you get some on your finger, dont worry.
in less than a day, the excess polish around your nails and on your fingers will eventually start peeling off on its own, if you wanna help, pull it with some tweezers. (plus its pretty satisfying lol)
it comes out looking perfect!
Painting the day before is literally hiw I do it! For $35.00, get a gel starter & good to go!
lovely finish pet. im going to look at your other videos now. enjoyed that one.
I don't even apply nail polish regularly , still I am watching this 😂
I like the shape and length of your nails and I love how they are straight cut.
You have beautiful hands & nails.👍💕
YariGlows215 thanks
*m8* your being rude
Emma Dalton bruh, how? 😂
Very! She's got a 'hand model' career if she wants it! They're perfect.
@@Random-mj5ij that's not rude honey, :/
Can I just say this video is so helpful. No Matter how many times I tried I could never get my nails like yours. When I watched this video it explained what I'm forgetting to do.
Thank you! The oil is what I'm missing & my poor cuticles have been paying the price this winter.
This is what I've started using on my cuticles. I don't feel like I have to hide my hands anymore!
10 ml roller bottle...like for essential oil, or clean, empty nail polish bottle...be sure either are clean and dry.
Add 15 drops of Lavender essential oil
Add 10 drops of eucalyptus essential oil
Add 10 drops of grapefruit essential oil.
Add 5 drops peppermint essential oil
Add 1 ml vitamin E oil. I use a marked dropper for this.
Fill the rest of the bottle with fractionated coconut oil.
Put roller cap and lid on bottle or screw the brush into the nail polish bottle. Gently shake until blended. Gently shake before each use
I started with scaling down the eo's by half, since I didn't know how sensitive my skin would be. I use this formula now and have a bottle in my bedroom and living room. (I don't sell essential oils :)
i decided to do my nails at midnight (now) bc i always bight them, but i cant pant my nails to save my life so ty for the tutorial
My pointer nails are always round 😂
Same! All my other nails are mostly squared but the pointers 😭😂
My thumb is really square and the rest are round. Kinda lol
SAME ITS SOOOO ANNOYING
All of mine are but not my ring fingers tho
Same!!!
I was looking on my web browser how to paint gel nail polish on short finger nails I really liked your video but I have a question I just purchased my self a gel kit I need to grown my aweful short nails and I have carple tunnle sever so I’m shaky is there any product you can suggest I can use so I don’t have the mess my first application I dried and didn’t wipe my nail polish off my side so it cured under lamp I need a solution to get the application you did thanks for any tips in advance❤️
This is really helpful! Though I think a big part of my problem is that I have a tremor in my hands so it makes it near impossible to keep steady when doing my nails, especially my finger nails. However, I'll definitely be using some of these tips for when I paint my toenails!
You've added such a cute factor to this video. Super well done!
I will definitely try that cold water tip. Thanks a bunch! 💖
And... how you paint the other hand? 😂🤷🏻♀️
Use this video~ ua-cam.com/video/mDJdnbBvHhc/v-deo.html
Exactly man
😂😂 okayyy
😂
My problem too 😩
thank you i will try your methods. I am so bad at this but you realy simplify it the step for me.
Well, I'll be watching this a lot. Like, seriously, other nail tip videos are actually kinda unrealistic... But, ummm, Ilysm juli!
Great tips. I'll definitely gonna try that cold water tip next time :) One thing that I sometimes do is use Clean&start nail cleanser by essence. And sometimes I add more top coat after few days, but not always.
You have pretty nails... i like their shapes too! Thanks for the tips
That push on proximal nail fold gave me extreme anxiety 🙂
Just paint your nail and after 20 minutes dip your hand in warm water for two minutes and wash it with handwash. Paint on skin doesn't bothers me so I don't do this , I just get it removed on its own while m taking bath
I'm always learning something new on the internet 🥰
My problem is that I have arthritis in my hands, and wrists. So I can't apply polish in the same way you do. My hand is straight out in front of me and my other hand is at an angle. This does not bode well for not getting polish on the skin. However, I am getting better and managed this week to apply very dark red polish with minimal poish to the skin. I have really small nails and most brushes are too big. My favourite at the moment is Revlon Clean polish in solid colours. It's meant to be one coat, but frankly it looks a bit patchy if you catch the light so I always do two coats. I've tried OPI and I don't like it at all.
I love your videos so much! Can you do some more gel videos? My gel manicures never turn out right 😭
Aimee P Totally! Like applying gel or more like designs and stuff?
Really see I always loved the look of clean polished nails on girls or boys as long as it's done well.. I never did mine till I found the matte top coat. I think that just looks a little better on men than a shiny finish. But for me the gel polish is so much easier to work with. You just can't flood the brush out cause it runs down real real quick with the gel in my experiences.
This is for Juli what do you think about using melted wax. Dip your finger tips in the wax and remove it only from your nails.. Then when your finished just pull it all off.
You could be a hand model. Your hands and nails are beautiful!
i would need some advices to put my np with my non dominant hand (sorry for my english, i'm french ^^")
Take it slowly and practice. That's really the only advice to give. I think everyone's non dominant had is a tad messier no matter how much practice they get! You can always clean up with a Q-Tip (or brush as the vid said).
Yeah I'm French too. But I do speak English like a LOT. That's how I got so good at it.
Try doing everything with your non-dominant hand for a couple of weeks. Brush your teeth, cutting, everything, you will be amazed how quickly you learn how to use this other hand. And just practice.
Practice. And use your little finger as a stabelizer
Bonjour! Comment t'allez vous?
Et excusez- moi parce que je ne parle pas français bien.
I am a straight guy who is married and love painting my nails, its just fun.
