I bought the GRP live session album as a fragile teen in the mid-80's. What really IMHO makes this a serious fusion album, is the incredible groove, set by Abe Laboriel & Carlos Vega. Of course, there's a variety of great musicians, but these two guys do bring this session to the next level. :)
Carlos didn't just have great feel but he had an innate ability to place hits with his bass drum and toms within the music to enhance, not distract from it or the groove. His taste and musicianship was peerless.
Yes. One of the best drummers ever, such good taste!... Even me, being from Portugal, I had the privilege of seeing him live in concert with James Taylor, in Lisbon, 1992. What a shame that he left us so soon...
Wow, just had my 1st listen of this.. What a Jazz Classic.. Regardless of genre, be it smooth, Latin or Fusion.. Looks like these guys were able to break the mold.. At least a bit. The music created in this recording, because the players are so sophisticated.. But yet nobody seems to try to steal the show.. Totally unselfish, and motivated to the beauty of the overall sound. So much more musically enjoyable than many modern smooth band bus riders.
Mexico!!
The whole concert is awesome, but the performance of “Oasis” is mindblowing! What a track. What a marvellous performance by these wonderful musicians. I have the DVD, and I cherish it. ❤️
What a great upload! Tightest rhythm section ever, period! I was lucky enough to see them in the Netherlands, it was enchanting!! Carlos Vega, best ever!
When the technique and the virtuosity were at the service of the music ..... the real one ..... and when the dynamics and the beautiful sound in the recordings still existed .... Good times ..
GRP All-Stars: Lee Ritenour - Guitarra e violão Dave Grusin - Piano e Teclados DX-7 em "Before It's Too Late" Larry Williams - Teclados DX-7 e Emulator II e Sax em "Love Dance" Carlos Vega - Bateria Abraham Laboriel - Baixo Dave Valentin - Flautas Convidados especiais: Diane Schuur - Voz e Piano em "Amazing Grace" Ivan Lins - Voz e teclados em "Before It's Too Late" Phil Perry - Voz em "Countdown"

Awesome performance! Had the CD first then bought the VHS. Then bought the DVD when it came out and I still have them all three. One of my all-time top five CDs of any genre in my personal collection. Thanks for posting!
Agreed with you mr.zul.. I get bored to player in my country which try to imitate yngwie for 40 years since mid 80's,hahahaa.. Seems like they ain't listen to other genre or player.. Since i heard smooth jazz fusion & player like rit & carlton few years ago i knew & i never looking back,hehee.. Have a nice day..
Now I know where L M got his ideas from. He's got a film similar to this one. Vi~a Del Mar 1994. Also Carlos Vega (drums) and Abraham Laboriel (Bass) were called in to record the Romance album. High Quality musicians.
Jup one of the best positive creative live perfomance ever recorded. Even sad songs was playing with such positive note. I can't say today there is no so talented musician any more, but today barely you can hear so creative and enjoyable music, specially in main stream, which is sad. And for people that hear this first time: There is 2 videos from the same live performance from Record Plant: You can get both on 1 DVD, called "Double Time jazz collection".
RIP Dave Valentin. Wonderful flute player.
This vid lacks nothing! It’s all here kids, pure virtuosity way past full from everyone! Off the chart cool factor and absolute joy!
Ahh, the late great Dave Valentin! i have so many of his CDs, and some vinyl. I may have spent 100+ hours listening to him, wish he lived forever!
Tears in my eyes now! All those fond memories of friends, family who are lost & gone, I Purchased this on Laser Disc '86 still like fine wine
I, too ,bought this on LD. I still have it to this day.

Carlos didn't just have great feel but he had an innate ability to place hits with his bass drum and toms within the music to enhance, not distract from it or the groove. His taste and musicianship was peerless.

Carlos Vega! Saw him live in concert with James Taylor back in Summer 1987. Together with Abe Laboriel one of the great rhythm sections.

Great Carlos, another magic cuban musician
Carlos Vega was a great drummer, with an exquisite musical language. Sadly he died very young.
Kind of fun to visit the way back machine of the music I loved growing up and still do!

Dave Valentin! Great sound, phrasing, and unparalleled rhythmic accuracy. He was a former timbale/percussion player, and he plays like it.
