This is one of the best shows I've ever seen in my life!!! I can't get sick!!! Great Lee Ritenour, Dave Grusin, Abrahan Laboriel, Ivan Lins, Carlos Vega and Larry Williams!!! It's a shame they don't make music like they used to anymore!!! Watching in 2024
Who in the hell in their right mind would give this a thumbs down?? This is 80s jazz fusion at its finest and the Ritenour/Grusin combination is timeless. These guys are still jammin with each other and Dave is 84!! These are the kinda guys that get better all the time!!
So glad UA-cam disabled thumbs down 👍. Zillions of comments under millions of videos wondering why there are thumbs downs are now thankfully irrelevant. There simply are no more thumbs downs. If someone really doesn’t like something, they have to actually write it out. All these GRP All Star and Rit videos are great btw, thanks to everyone who posts them.
I watched this with my dad when this came out on Laser Disc. He passed away this May, and I’ve been watching it almost daily, I miss him. Dave Grusin was his favorite, and mine as well since I was young. Ivan Lins voice and energy is brings me comfort.
I read this comment before watching the video, and I knew exactly which fill you meant. Blew me away in 1985 and still is amazing to hear today. Why play much note when few note do trick?
One of the best concerts I´ve ever heard.Extraordinary studio musicians ,instrumental songs and brief but remarkable Ivan Lins appearance singing Harlequin.A wonderful masterpiece. R.I.P.Carlos Vega
Set List: Power wave 00:17 Rio Funk 06:05 Lee Ritenour introduce the band 13:50 Mountain dance 15:41 Harlequin 23:20 The island 30:36 Rit variations 34:12 Dolphin dreams 40:42 St.Elsewhere 50:36
Ivan Lins is an amazing vocalist. This is one of my top ten albums. I think I was 13 when I heard Harlequin for the first time and it has stuck with my soul ever since.
I had this on VHS back in the day. I immediately pasted a pic of Carlos Vega out of Modern Drummer on my school folder, he was such a tasty player. Didn't even know he'd died, gone far too soon. Abe L. was, and remains the man!
My sister has a VHS of this and I watched it incessantly when I was a kid. Just last Saturday I finally got to see Lee Ritenour and Dave Grusin live at Yoshi's Oakland. Dream came true.
This is a classic. I first had the VHS, then on a laserdisc, and now finally I can just watch it on my phone. The tech changed but the music remains amazing. Everyone played so pristinely.
I still have the vhs my 1st encounter with jazz.. when I bought my 1st videorecorder in the 80s The salesman put thuis vhs in the rec. The rest is history
Days of concerts of this type are long gone... No more jazz gigs... No more original music band's gigs anymore. No more instrumental music gigs, no recordings of this type, no perspectives for young aspiring artists to find any outlets... sad. I almost lost hope entirely. Only re-visiting productions from 30-40 years ago, reflecting on past-times is a thing to do for a musician these days, I guess. Wonderful video, wonderful memories of GREATNESS and audiences appreciation.
Dave Grusin and Lee Rittenour are each amazing in their own rights. Together, they are a powerhouse. I just saw them perform together last weekend at the Catalina Club in L.A.. Grusin's fingers still amazing at age 87. And now with Wes Rittenour on drums, it's sure to be a great tour. My favorite cut is "Rit Variations." Mind-blowing! Still trying to learn it..
Incredible concert!! "mountain dance" is from the movie "Falling in love", starring Meryl Streep and Robert de Niro. A wonderful romantic story about love that is finding its own way, love that can move mountains! My all time favourite movie!
I hope when I die God has a place in heaven for musicians. I would give anything to play with Carlos Vega! Hey Carlos! Im a commin..hope not soon but keep my keyboards warmed up, we'll make some thunder brother!
Randall Ulmer Wow, I would have given anything to have seen him. And I had the chance to but wasn't able, and just when I started to listen to everything he did, we lost him. Glad you got to see him Randall, I bet it was great. He did so much and expended no energy. I still to this day watch his every move. And I'm a keyboardist buddy! Go figure! Good hearing from you Randall...Hope you are well!
+Rich Green Great Drummer and also he was a very humble and nice guy RIP, my dad (also a drummer) told me a story that he once went to a show in LA and Alex Acuna was announced as the band drummer but for some reason he was not able to make it to the show (my dad asked around if Alex was going to be able to make it) so Carlos Vega filled in for him and at the time my dad didn't knew him and was blown out by his playing. After the show Carlos Vega approached my dad and apologized that Alex Acuna had not made it (I guess he heard him asking around) and my dad was like no worries! hehehe that he loved his playing and was leaving very happy after seeing him perform! Carlos was also visibly happy after my dad's comments and thank him! (wow, talk about a great player and very humble and down to earth)
Daniel Muñoz Hey Daniel, Thanks for that! And thank you for writing me, great story man! How cool was that! Your Dad sounds like a good man and I am sure an awesome musician as well. I wish I knew what the hell happened there. What was going on with Carlos that made him commit suicide? That guy had so much feel and was an incredible drummer. We lost a good man and in my opinion, one of the better drummers of our time. I always loved that guy and he and Dave Weckl were always my favorite drummers. Although I have played I am a keyboardist by trade but drums are a close favorite. Do you know what was up with him to make him go over the edge like that? Anyway, great to hear from you and thanks so much for sharing that with me. Are you a drummer? You have good taste brother! Take care my friend! Rich.
+Rich Green I agree, we definitively lost a good man and a great drummer, I would never begin to understand what would drive someone to do what he did, it's very sad.... I actually play guitar myself, but growing up with a Drummer has made me more appreciative of all other instruments. Take care as well!
Orlandao - I forgot to mention tha backstory...my wife who worked as a sales executive for EMI in Melbourne came home with these two promotional samplers for the launch of GRP and I was hooked and I have followed the careers of all the stable ever since. Watching a Phil Perry moved from back-up vocals to a burgeoning solo career has been very satisfying..as well as Ivan Lins and so many others. I also met Chieli MInucci of Special EFX via the sampler last year at the ' Cutting Room' NYC.
I only got into fusion in the late 2000's. It changed my tastes for sure. I had a flatmate who was 20 years older (still is) and had hundreds of CDs who introduced me to it.
Orlando Sanchez, a million thanks to you for your effort, for sharing this masterpiece work of timeless class with Jazz lovers like myself. Gracias, my friend. I wish you all the best!
Wooww amazing...remembered when i was teenager...every morning before go to school i heard this music,GRP etc...recording live in room with the audiences....now Snarky puppy live to Dvd with audiences....salute.
Alguns gênios atemporais aí nessa banda. Ivan Lins é uma dos maiores compositores brasileiros de todos os tempos, ao lado de Djavan. Sua música aqui no Brasil é sofisticada e ao mesmo tempo ainda popular.
First saw this performance out of a laserdisc at a friend's music room in early 1987. In the fall later that year, I migrated to the US and took an apartment down the road from the Record Plant in Los Angeles. The rest is history.
These people are amazing... truly inspirational musicians that will last for thousand year since they release these tracks....i don't know how to describe the emotions they set but it's something unique...Carlos Vega i miss you man....i hope to meet all these people in heaven in the future! For now thanks for all you have done it's unbelievable storytelling of Fusion Music!
Orlanda - I treasure the two assets I have.firstly a GRP digital sampler ' A New age in Jazz' Volume two ( Diigital Master ) I have never located Volume two despite my many searches. The second is ' GRP All Stars - Live from the Record Plant' which as you have explained is a incomplete version of the full concert. So I am rapturous to find this here which completes the story. I was fortunate to attend the 30th Anniversary of GRP in NYC in 2012 at 'Blue Note' and met Lee and Larry Rosen who autographed the DVD !!
thank you very much for posting this concert i was a jong guy 15 years old touring with the band that time this was one the band that i was watching every day had it on vhs but lost all of them thanx for bringing back those nice memory s
Seeing Dave Grusin in this video, recorded almost 40 years ago, really makes me wonder which planet he's originally from, as he's still alive and kicking to this day in 2023.
Wow!!! As good as it gets!! Lee's playing is so darn tasty. and Carlos, well, that's Mr Vega. Man his drums sound so good. All these cats are just so, so talented. Larry, Dave, and the funky man Mr. Abe, none any better!!
This is fantastic! Lee you rock! Or should I say, you "Jazz!" this is just awesome. Great sound, great assembly of talented musicians! I love the bass players energy, style, talent and enthusiasm. On a side note, Lee I hope your health is getting better, and I am sorry to hear about your house / studio in Malibu. :-(
Yes thanks for posting.. I had this in my audio store in Phoenix 1986 or 87' playing on the big screen TV's.... wow I had it on Laser Disc lol... Les McCann walked in and I turned him on to it... Good stuff.. thanks!
I always end up revisiting this performance, it's easily one of my favorites of all time. The latest Oddity Archive where Ben picks this up at the thrift store reminded me of this again, so props for that. I've been listening to Harlequin for at least three days straight - Ivan Lins really seals the deal on that song.
Great, great music. Too bad Larry Williams and Lee Ritenour weren't allowed to solo for a bit longer on St. Elsewhere 52 minutes into the show. They had a great thing going there... Fantastic music nonetheless :)
I still remember my feet hitting the pedal of drum bass and hi-hat, my hands rolling over snare and toms, jamming with my friends playing St. Elswhere, our favorite song.

Watching in 2024 as well! Every now and then I just have to rewatch this wonderful performance. :)
Me too

ja,ja,ja....These kind of people can hear but they seem like deaf
Stupidity!!!
You may be assuming a bit much there

RIP the amazing Carlos Vega 💔 What an amazing drummer he was. Huge loss to music.
I watched this with my dad when this came out on Laser Disc. He passed away this May, and I’ve been watching it almost daily, I miss him. Dave Grusin was his favorite, and mine as well since I was young. Ivan Lins voice and energy is brings me comfort.
Man I would give something to travel back in time and sit somewhere there in the corner!
Omg.. That cowbell fill at 17:04... R.I.P. Carlos Vega, a true groove master
Carlos Vega, Jeff Porcaro and Mike Porcaro in my heart !Thiago from Brazil !!!
Nice catch! Subtle n' tasty. Vega had such a great touch.
great drummer gone too soon :(
I read this comment before watching the video, and I knew exactly which fill you meant. Blew me away in 1985 and still is amazing to hear today. Why play much note when few note do trick?

Abraham Laboriel is really classic! i like his style, even the way he moves.. he really seems to enjoy the music really really much...
33 years later, still true. A bit larger, though, as are most of us with age. Beloved by everyone who's played with him, from all reports.
Abraham Laboriel is my favorite bass player! I love the way he plays on this video. I also love hearing Ivan Lins.
I have the original VHS of this show. NEVER gets old. True musicianship!

Abraham Laboriel.....absolutely one of my all time favorite bass players ever.
Dolphin Dreams has to be one of the most wonderful pieces of music I have ever heard , magical!
Ivan Lins is an amazing vocalist. This is one of my top ten albums. I think I was 13 when I heard Harlequin for the first time and it has stuck with my soul ever since.

Lee "Captain Fingers" Ritenour and Dave Gruisin in their prime - goosebumps indeed!
Days of concerts of this type are long gone... No more jazz gigs... No more original music band's gigs anymore. More talented people in the world , God bless you all..
45:58 - 46:12 that drum lick with lots of simple ghost note.... that's just amaze me. It's a sweet execution....
Dave Grusin and Lee Rittenour are each amazing in their own rights. Together, they are a powerhouse. I just saw them perform together last weekend at the Catalina Club in L.A.. 40 year old gem of a concert. Absolutely flawless musicianship. Each one enraptured in some synchronized magic. Rest in peace Carlos Vega 🙏
I'm amazed at the audio quality, specially on drums. Killing performance.
Timeless performance.....saw it the week it was released...Dad was a pro Jazz Pianist and we both had been GRP fans for years
That music was magical . The best time of music ever that will never be back.
L.A fusion of the 80s has to be in the jazz hall of fame book, and these guys are the architects
