I listen to it often as well. This is one of Lee's concerts with the most energy. Saw him at a festival in Canada with the same lineup except for the drummer. Instead of Kennedy he had Sonny Emory, who isn't too bad either!
I saw Will Kennedy play with the Yellowjackets with Jimmy Haslip on bass........wow wow wow. Saw LR play the Baked Potato in Hollywierd with Chester Thompson on drums.....what a life these cats lead.......great players, great gear and gigs all over the world. I used to get off playing dive bars for 50 bucks a night.
Yup, can't count the blues songs I was too lazy to write about those $50-nighters but at least almost any one of tose gigs covered the monthly payment on my Les Paul, which I consider the more apt guitar for rock despite its lack of comfort. The riffs one can extract from are unique. Just effin' fabulous. Noe speaking of this song, I have no idea how Ritenour can play it on a jazz guitar, the guy is so talented some would call it magic.
That's it, rock. It seems the older Lee gets the funkier he becomes. Same also applies, in an even more dramatic way, to his accomplice Dave Grusin. The man is is 86 and still keeps up with rockin' Not sure he still plays with Ritenour though but last I heard he still was in 2018.
I was lucky to see the four of them play in Sydney in 2008 at the Basement: a fantastic show. But this was better What world class players ...what musical perfection
Love the footage starting at 31:00! Great interaction between Melvin and Will. Love that MD7. Oh so tempted to get one for myself. Splendid concert. Thanks for posting.
Davis is right up there with the likes of Marcus Miller, speed and sharp attack included. He reminds me a lot of a bassist who played with Frank Zappa for a while but whose name I forget.
Lee Ritenour : Guitar Patrice Rushen : Piano, & Keyboards Melvin Davis : Bass Will Kennedy : Drums Smoke 'n Mirrors Wesbound Stolen Waters Edge Forget Me Nots Rio Funk
We don't hear much of Patrice Rushen since the 80's or 90's but not only is she a great signer but she's the perfect tour keyboard player. She doesn't compose but apparently knows all the tricks of the trade and can easily keep up with whoever she's touring with.
Very,Very Good!! His Wes Montgomery stuff is almost better than Wes,OOPS! did I say that ?Yes you moron! You did.I like his version of 4on6,although the subtitle of the song said something else,I know it was 4on6 cause' I am learning the head to it.Thank you Raphael Moura for this great upload!
I feel sorry for people who don’t like jazz, or basically any music with an odd time signature. They have been denied the ability to appreciate extreme skill and talent. I don’t play but I was a vocalist back in the day. When an artist rips a difficult run or throws in a brand new tasty riff, an almost electric shock runs clear through me. Ooooh yesss, grinning at the player like, where did THAT come from? Certain music and the players of that music will not allow me to sit still. My body can’t do it. I feel so badly for those that don’t understand.
-Define amazing Lee. -Again? Oh, man... No me canso de verlo. Esta mierda le emociona a uno. Ojalá algún día pueda acudir alguno de sus conciertos. 47:02 - This bass player can crash bones with his thumb.. Also keep an eye on the guy by the end of the solo; I´d have had the same face gesture and feeling as well after that, fuck yea.
Not a whole lot of respect given to Patrice there..from one of my old gittar heroes..badly done! She stole the show, best musician there...really disappointed there...from a gittar player...
North Sea "Jazz" Festival......hmm? Maybe more like 70% rock and 30% "jazz"......if I did the allocation accurately. For the jazz purist, some of the material probably doesn't register or qualify in their mind as "jazz".
"Extremely skilled" is an understatement😉. In my opinion Davis is the best bassist on the fusion scene at par with Abraham Laboriel (who is now retired) and if you don't include Marcus Miller as fusion (I consider Miller a funk-jazz bassist). Davis is also a gifted jazz vocalist.
Excellent vibrant concert with great sound!. Nice to see Patrice Rushen here as well as this awesome drummer I didn't know of, Will Kennedy, if I got his name right.
Man these guys are blessed to have such talent, so amazing.
Simply awesome, every single one of them... but together almost out of this world... this kind of musical experience cannot get any better IMHO
What show! I listen to this often. It keeps getting better! What a band !
I listen to it often as well. This is one of Lee's concerts with the most energy. Saw him at a festival in Canada with the same lineup except for the drummer. Instead of Kennedy he had Sonny Emory, who isn't too bad either!
Kaveman Karl I think Sonny is now in Eric Clapton’s Band. I’ve seen play a few times. He is good! Stay safe and have a great day!
@@bobclark8905 Good to hear that Bob, Emory deserves it.
especially Smokin`mirrors and Stolen
like old wine.. as we say in french ..
Only one word needed here...
Amazing!
Ritenour one of the 12 best of all time...

Ain't it the truth brother, ain't it the TRUTH !

Melvin is the sound I love in a bass player, thanks!!!
why would anyone give a thumbs down for this music? I am really curious to know
I was wondering the same. They may be Justin Bieber's fans.
They went to a closed elementary school with no class! LOL

What is it with great bass players they like to wear head coverings. Marcus Miller & Victor Wooten also like to do that.

Incredible band, unbelievable playing.
Melvin Davis playing his Ken Smith MD signature 7 string bass guitar. An extremely skilled bassplayer.

Skilled is not enough to describe what this guy is able to do with his "monster groove" in each hand..
47:03 Lee R.: Hey Melvin! Play that Funky Slap Bass ;)
Thanks so much for the upload. good audio quality.
Simon Phillips played really fine smoke and mirrors but Bill Kennedy did it even better,,more dynamic and soulful
You Mean Will Kennedy
Simple, The best, is my favorite guitarplayer /,,/ of jazz fussion (y)
Excellent vibrant concert with great sound!. Nice to see Patrice Rushen here as well as this awesome drummer I didn't know of, Will Kennedy, if I got his name right.
Will Kennedy has been the drummer of the Jellowjackets in the last 25 years. A fine musician, indeed.
