Dave Grusin and the NY-LA Dream Band is an album by American pianist Dave Grusin released in 1984, recorded for the GRP label. The album was recorded live in Tokyo, Japan, at Budokan. The album reached No. 4 on Billboard's Jazz chart.
Budokan, Tokyo, Japan
Dave Grusin is a genius. Composer, conductor, jazz piano virtuoso, movie scores...brilliant.
Sir yes Sir! He is. He´s the one. He is a virtuoso. He was born to the music. To this wonderful word of composition and rythms. God bless him ! His music is the best.
Yes BadenBattle I agree with you. Dave Grusin was born to compose and to play his music anytime. As long as he live. I like him since 1981. Listening to: She Could be mine from the L.P. "Out of the shadows". wonderful. I ¨m a Mexican citizen and proudly listening to Jazz in every of it´s variations.
Absolutely, I’ve had this album since 1982, play it weekly but have a greater appreciation after seeing this video! Nothing like it! Fantastic!
The truest indicator of musical talent is when the live version of a song sounds better than on the studio recorded album!!
So true!!!!!
EXACTLY!!
Early 1980s was definitely a high point of the entire music industry
I really like this trumpet/flugelhorn player!!!!
Beautiful emboucher also.
what treat, to see Steve Gadd live in his prime in a whole concert!
He's still in his prime. :) I saw him in concert recently, still as tight as an Otter's pocket.
I was there !! I was such a huge fan of Lee Ritenour ! My so called " uncle" Makoto Hasegawa was a huge music director in Japan who was supposed to be the one discovered Kitaro & he was a mentor of Pink Lady's director Hisahiko Iijima who brought 'em here in the U.S.& had a top 40 hit . My " uncle" produced the video & laser disk ? I remember. His name is credited on 'them ! He later went into video producing business then movie industry. I was psyched to see Ritenour ,but I was way more impressed by Steve Gadd !!! Thanks for this upload !! Music in the 70's / 80's was awesome ,more musical & they took the dynamics seriously which is totally lacking in music nowadays !! So wrong !! Like a food without any spice !! Lol.👍👍💜🥁🐉🎤🎶💞
Happy 90th Birthday Dave!
Thank you Dave for creating the greatest music ever and bringing the greatest musicians on the planet together to deliver your incredible musical high
Dave Grusin has been my favorite since i've heard Mountain Dance.
Thank you so much for the Music 👌🏿
That rhythm section of Steve Gadd and The Electric Bass GOAT Anthony Jackson, is incredible 👌🏿
Greetings from Uganda 🇺🇬 👊🏿🖤
Dave Grusin and all the great Musicians are just marvellous. Thank you so much
AJ's playing between 9:29 and 10:48 in 'Countdown' exemplifies why he is regarded by many as the greatest of all time. Each note executed perfectly on top of the beat with remarkable precision and strength.
If Steve Gadd & Anthony Jackson’s groove didn’t feel so heavenly I would be FURIOUS at their inability to do otherwise.
COUNT DOWN has never sounded so cool! Grusin on the vocoder! Now I know why they introduce Steve Gadd as the greatest drummer in the world!
Like Yngwie Malsteen's concert with the Japanese Philharmonic Orchestra, somehow concerts this epic could only take place in Japan during this era!
I have loved this album since it came out in '82! Lee Ritenour!!! Countdown!!!!!
GOAT!!!
ERIC GALE: R.I.P. my friend...😪🎸
Oh...sad !! I was wondering as I thought I read of his passing a long while ago ,wasn't it ? I think he died kind of young ...? I can be wrong ! He was an awesome guitarist !!! 💔💜🥁🐉🎤💞
Just outstanding - I have the LA Dream Band on CD and it's one of my favorite albums. This concert was just superb. I've been a Dave Grusin fan since I first heard him back with Howard Roberts. This is just first class, tasteful music. Excellent!!!
Grusin’s playing is so damn crisp and clear.
what a concert....thank you for sharing. In many ways, this level of orchestration and performance is one of humanities high watermarks of achievement. Well done Dave and entire band and many of the top session players of the day
Dave that's funky on vocoder this is a count down baby real music Lee ritenour the master on guitar
This concert is so awesome. Real, top notch pro musicians. No studio enhancements.
I’ve been looking for this concert since I saw it once on the arts channel in Singapore years ago. Alas !! It wasn’t in Video Tape, VCD nor DVD ... u name it .... just doesn’t exist! All u can find is the CD version which don’t include the classic last track of Anthem International. This concert was done in 1982 ! .. I just entered high school. Thank you so much for putting this up in UA-cam and please any more of such classic concerts by the GRP casts which was course started by modern era jazz legend Dave Grusin .... Would be truly appreciated! Thank you very much!
It was available in the United Kingdom on VHS in the 1980s. I've got a copy which l transferred onto DVD.....
Thanks for uploading it!
Luckily I was there... 🙂
Nice Blend & Contrast between the Guitar Styles of Eric Gale & Lee Ritenour on MORNING GLORY
Many years ago I was fortunate enough to go to a Steve Gadd clinic. During the clinic he said "In the right moments you have to drive the bus" One of the best examples of this is at 26 mins and 10 seconds.
That whole song is a master class in how to build a composition over 10++ minutes, and Gadd is right there building what I think is one of his best drum parts ever.
Here are GENIUSES with timeless songs thanks thanks for the memories keep on posting wonderful GEMS please
This is heaven. ❤
Its like the whole world has united to play one universal language, that's love right there ❤️
Thanks for this wonderful live of GENIUSES which i ve grown up with these timeless songs thanks for memories
Best jazz session ever. Loved this since 1982 !!!
Brilliant as ever as I just love in particular "Three Days of the Condor" extended movie music!
This is wonderful. Great musicians, great talent! This is when music meant something!!
I feel you bro! I was born in 87 but i've always felt connected to 80's music n culture, people were real n transparent back then...this was an amazing find!
When the best come together, they can only create a better song!!!
Some of my favourite musicians right here on this video... It was a top, top concert - Dave Grusin, the melodic monster. I've still got a lot of his tunes flying around in my head to this very day...😁👍
This is one classy jazz-fusion supergroup.
UNFORGETTABLE CONCERT. THANKS FOR THIS NICE PUBLICATION. BRAVO!! Hebert Perez Garcia Julianadorp / The Netherlands
Thank you, Dave Grusin and your wonderful musician friends for creating such wonderful music. Each song touches emotions, joy, bliss, tenderness, melancholy. Each song a story that takes us on an emotional journey. You are not just composer, you tell stories through music, that takes the listener through an experience that words cannot. THANKYOU !
I love it Dave's play
Summer Sketches '82 is a FANTASTIC piece. And my goodness, by the end with Gadd going hard into that doom march... brilliant from beginning to end.
Vadim , thank you very very very much for posting this nice concert !!👍👍👍 from ru
My first time watching this concert in video. I’ve been listening to the CD for over twenty years I copied the CD in my desk top, in my iPad and phone and listening to these days. Mountain dance version is different and some of the pieces are also different. Great video.
Mr. Grusin has been a favorite of mine for many years.
mine to my dad introduced his music whent i was about 12 years old been hooked Landi
Landi Schorsch The mine too 💖✨💖
There's always something special about watching and listening to outstanding musicians playing intricate compositions and having an awesome time playing off each other.
I'm so glad somebody posted the whole album on UA-cam! Thanks so much 👌🏾👌🏾
Three Days of the Condor and Summer Sketches really bring back great memories. And I was always impressed by how clear and crisp this live album was. But all of GRP recordings are clear like this..
I’m so digging the “Three days of the Condor” theme it’s great!!
Me too! That and Summer Sketches... These songs will never get old 😎
That is my all time fave & the movie !! Both were/ still are excellent !!! 👍💜🥁🐉🎤🎶💞
Dave GRUSIN appears as serious & in-depth as a Leonard Bernstein yet with such a Hip Coolness
Lee Ritenour always so lively … and always fervent feel with flawless chops 💥🙏🏽💥

Man! I got this album and the cd of this! This is a high quality download. Wish I could’ve been at this concert. A classic 👌🏽
Dave Grusin is a world-class, one-of-a-kind talented, professional musician with one of the most enviable careers ever. A career spent innovating, composing, producing himself and others such as Lee Ritenour and Chick Corea, and, of course, performing.
The notion that talentless celebrities who are able to fill stadiums with people who have zero understanding of music also pass for having the same profession as Dave Grusin is absolutely ludicrous.
何年振りかな〜"This is the Tokyo, baby♪" "Lee Ritnour〜Count do〜wn〜Lee!!!"
Thank you for uploading, Vadim Shinnik. I was 15 y.o (SMP Negeri 1 Malang) the first time when I heard these songs. Since then, 1986, I was a Lee Ritenour and Dave Grusin fan, GRP
There is nothing quite as satisfying to the soul as seeing a group of musicians from all parts of the world come together and groove this way..
Mr. Gadd, is pure brilliance. Listen to his (of course) cymbal and hi-hat work on three days of the condor. Lord it's like he's playing piano...
I love this GRP album, the very first I ever bought, the second was GRP Live in Session. Thank you for upload this video.

If i only heard this once i'd die a happy man.Three Days of the Condor greatest theme ever written.
Fantastic concert!
Best version of Mountain Dance ever!
Hope the bonus tracks will be released on CD!
Javier Faveron. I have this album in 33 rpm. It is my personal treasure.
Genius
Perfection
Love🥰❤
Dave & percussionist Rubens Bassini go back to the days of Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66.
excellent
How Super Cool 😎 … The Head Maestro getting down with a vocoder on “COUNTDOWN” 😎🤗
DAVE GRUSIN … SO DEEP … SO SERIOUS … yet So LOOSE & COOL 😎 🤗🙏🏽
Thank you so much for uploading my favorite stage. After 36years ,even now They are the most elegant people,
and works!!
The composition of Academician Grusin plays perfectly and conqueringly, as always! :-)
THANK YOU for posting this, i knew it was around, i have this vinyl album, great production!
Beautiful music I love music
I had this on VHS many years ago. It's a shame it's not available on dvd.
Amazing the skill of all these musicians, it's no exaggeration to say it's From Dreams
'Summer Sketches'... beautiful
My Dave Grusin cd s are my most favorite cd s ❤️❤️
To think how big and talented this production was and I just can't imagine anybody doing this today and that's really sad. Apparently CEO's today doesn't have music in their hearts but $ signs in their head. Not very innovative and no vision at all. But this is great and shows it could be done back in the 80's.
Facts 100%
Really bringing tears to my eyes listening to this again.
I have the cd version of Dave Grusin & The N.Y. / L.A. Dream Band and think it's an AWESOME (so much used word but totally applicable here) cd. Looked for it in Amazon Music and gosh, couldn't readily find it. Went to UA-cam and lo and behold I came across this Live Video Concert .... and it's DOUBLY AWESOME! The songs sound as good ... if not better ... but to actually see the ARTISTS playing what the cd you could only hear....oh man, it put it into another REALM of AWESOME. Thank you for uploading this and thank you UA-cam for keeping it here.
And when oh when are they going to put this on 4K UHD???
Love this!
Vadim, thanks for posting!!
To be such an amazing conductor …. Plus the
Actually composer of such marvelous works … 🙏🏽
That’s Super Awesome 👏🏼 🙏🏽💥🙏🏽
DAVE GRUSIN 💥🙏🏽💥🎹💥🙏🏽
Thanks for uploading this. Dave Grusin was, and is, an unmitigated genius. Only got to see him once for one or two solo numbers. This makes me both happy and sad. We are blessed to have this massively great music and such superior musicians who have recorded these masterpieces. But I am sad because I'm just not seeing anything near this level of craftsmanship in today's music. Yes, we have Pat Metheny, Hiromi Uehara, Snarky Puppy, (If you don't know them, don't let the name scare you. They wont disappoint), and some I still need (hope) to learn about (Tal Wilkenfeld?). For whatever reason, it seems like they've gone dark. I don't mean any disrespect, but I'm just not seeing much in the way of decent music or musicians these days.
Yes! Snarky Puppy 🐶 IS THE BOMB👌🏽. I think I’ll play them when I leave here..😉😉
Thank you for the upload miss that oldschool music
Question : Does anyone have a “live” video of “Rag Bag” from Dave Grusin’s Mountain Dance Album with Harvey Mason on drums. Harvey’s drumming on that track is out of this world! Wonder if this video exists?
Such a Groove on Serengetti Walk ✊🏽💥👍🏽
This is such a great concert with an allstar band. I remember buying this on cassette and then CD.
Just a note for correction in the credits: Anthony Jackson should be credited as Bass Guitar and Contrabass Guitar; he doesn't play Double Bass.
bellissimo, avevo la videocassetta vhs , incredibile !
Steve God 🥁Dreamband
🧞♂️😎👍👍👍
A lot of talented people here, not only Steve :) Every is beautiful and have something unic and special, and they play together and that's the reason why we have such a beautiful music! Every deserve special attention!
Vadim Shinnik
I had this CD, but I'm very impressed that it was seen in the video. Of course the members here are world class Dave and Lee fans. Steve of this time was popular as a backing for various artists. Steve still remembers playing with Sadao Watanabe 🎷in Japan. I think the performance at this Budokan was a very luxurious and rare production with an orchestra. Playing with Dave's brother was also rare. ♪Cassiopeia 🥁🎸🎹was the great popular in this time Japan. thanks ありがとう😊🙋♂️from🇯🇵
@@iyorit1089 Hello Japan !! I am Japanese ! My so called uncle produced the videos ! I was there as I was a huge Ritenour's fan back then ! But ,I was really impressed by Steve Gadd !!!
Magnifique !
The only thing missing is Lee Ritenour's heroic solo preceding Count Down which you can hear on the album; not sure why the footage wasn't recorded but it's not the uploader's fault. Other than that, this is perfect!!!
Principle of many editions there audio and video version of the same concert are different. Not all tracks but few of them is modified.
thanks for sharing this vadim
Thank You so much...
I own the cd and i love this concert ❤️❤️
