Love the Studio version. It seems harder for him to recreate on stage from the performances I’ve seen, but I know if she does it’ll be the Live version. Hopefully PinkPop as it has the best improvised guitar solo by Tom.
Chris was in Temple of the Dog, Soundgarden and Audioslave. He was a beautiful soul with an amazing voice to match and was gone way too soon. You should check out I am the Highway from Audioslave next.
I love Chris Cornell’s first solo album; Euphoria Morning. He worked on that album with Alain Johannes, a very good musician who also deserves some recognition.
Alain Johannes (one-time member of my favorite bands Queens Of The Stone Age and Them Crooked Vultures) is one of the greatest instrumentalists I've ever seen... all one need do is look up a live performance of the song for his wife Natasha who passed on, Make God Jealous. Amazing! His and Natasha's band Eleven was awesome, too
That album should have been called "Songs About Depression". Every song on that album tells the story of dealing with depression and how it affects your life and relationships. A lot of people, myself included, found it helpful in processing and dealing with the disease. It breaks my heart that we got away, but he didn't.
This was near the end of the world tour ! His voice was tierd according to an interview he was in . he said he was struggeling with his vocals but i think it was one of the best live concerts ever!!
16:25 In the studio recording of this song, I really love how he sings the word "skin." You don't really notice it here, but again in the studio version he lengthen the word, almost stretching it in a way. He brings alot of extra attention to it and it definitely evokes a feeling. Subtle things like that in his performances are why Chris Cornell is one of the greatest!
Audioslave is one of my favourite bands and Chris Cornell was my favourite vocalist. I had the priviledge to see him live once and he blew me away! RIP Chris. Once of the best singers of all time!
I think you'd reeeeeeeaaaaaaalllly enjoy their song "cochise". It was their big first hit, where everyone was like "wait, what? The singer from Soundgarden and.... Rage? Umm...." and then BAM they came on and killed it with this explosive song and badass music video and went "yeah, that's right."
This is my favorite album from all of Cornell’s bands but this was also a tough era for him live. This wasn’t a bad performance by any means but it is markedly different from the studio version, and you can tell he’s struggling with this song, particularly the chorus. (This song is a tough song to single in general.) There are a few live recordings that Audioslave did right after the album first album was released that sound pretty good but that was about it. He damaged his voice early on (at some point there was a surgery) and it drastically changed his sound. In the background he was dealing with addiction along with smoking and drinking. Stuff happens. In his later solo albums he spent a lot of time rebuilding his voice and as a result those live performances were much better and closer to the old style many of us knew and loved. RIP to a legend
I saw him at a crappy dilapidated venue in Des Moines, Iowa and he absolutely killed it. Best vocal performance I have ever witnessed. I can't think of a close second. Nothing compares.
Gasoline & Exploder always are of my biggest impressions of Chris Cornell's dominant vocal ranges. RIP to the Legend. My favorite male vocalist of all time.
As a huge soundgarden/chris Cornell fan the anticipation of the album when was through the roof. We had been waiting about a year or more. The first song I heard was Cochise. They played to that anticipation with that song and delivered. I knew the album was going to be huge after just the few seconds of Cochise.
To me he has a sort of haunting feel in his voice. Like he's tapping into a dark part of the soul that most people don't want to give voice to. Its not a dark angy but more of a dark hurt emotional side, and he gives it a beautiful sound in it own way. Was definitely an influential track growing up.
And this darkness feels even more articulated after his passing. I love all the Audioslave records, but after Chris's death I have been listening to them very little, because they break me in a way, every time I listen - because I'm very susceptible to feelings transposed through music. I guess this darkness is one of the reasons why I really love these records, but when the source of that darkness feels more revealed, it just cuts deeper, too deep at times, and it can wreck my mood.
Thank you for covering this and walking us all though. My heart will forever be broken, until the day I die, that Chris is not with us. His voice was a once in a lifetime experience that we all just need to be thankful for.
I'm a big Soundgarden fan, but RATM backing Cornell with Morello was just special and this was a great starter for Audioslave for you to check out. See "Set it Off" and "Cochise" for a couple of Audioslave bangers as well!
my absolute favourite Audioslave song is Wide Awake would recommend 110% especially the performance he did on the songbook album. Live acoustic performances he did you can feel each lyric hitting hard
Love your reactions! So fun to see when you really get surprised and impressed by small things! Chris is the best singer in my book, lot of his solo stuff that are amazing. Thank you!
Not sure if anyone else pointed it out, but back when this dropped as a single for the debut album, folks heard Chris doing that larynx tap you were talking about and thought it sounded like a digital pitch shifter effect. The band made it clear that it was that physical effect of Chris tapping that you see in the live cut you watched, and I have to imagine that it's something they extended in live performances in order to really highlight what he was doing. To my knowledge this is the only time Chris used this technique, which links in to how it's a bit risky to do if you're not careful, as you mentioned. Chris was really a fantastic talent, not just in terms of his range and breath control (and stamina) but also in the otherworldly quality of his voice and the lyrics he wrote. As a project, Audioslave is Chris at his most refined form (contrasting with the rawness of his earlier albums with Soundgarden) while his solo efforts (especially the very pop-infused album he did with Timbaland, "Scream") show him branching out and applying his voice in different ways. For a really good time though? Check out his acoustic cover of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean." ua-cam.com/video/R0uWF-37DAM/v-deo.html
So happy you discovered and covered Audioslave. One of my favorite bands for sure. They made so many excellent songs and their first album is awesome and one I never get tired of listening to. Chris had a phenomenal voice, was an excellent frontman, and let's face it... pretty easy on the eyes!
I'd love to see you do some older Soundgarden. Beyond The Wheel, in Dusseldorf Germany, from 1990 is a great example of both range and heaviness beyond anything you've heard from Chris yet.
Thanks for the tip about raised arms, Elisabeth. And for the creation. Chris was an incredible singer and human being. I hope he is in a better place now. R.I.P., Chris.
I absolutely love this episode. As a 20 year touring monitor engineer, I have learned so much from you in just, what, 2 years since lockdown? Thank you. You help me help my singer.
Chris Cornell was such a brilliant vocalist but with musicianship of Tim Commerford, Tom Morello, and Brad Wilk behind him it went to a whole new level. Huge kudos to them.
Everything Chris did is just great ❤ from Audioslave Like a stone and i am the highway is so great songs. And from the final and last album song called Nearly Forgot My Broken Heart is great . Rest in peace Chris ❤️
I'd like to request Elliott Smith for a future video. There are barely any reactions or analyses on UA-cam. His style of singing is very unique and hard to describe. It's very delicate and listening to his songs feels like stumbling upon a private conversation, as if he's singing intimately to himself or a confidant. The songs I'd recommend are: Pitseleh, Angeles, Between the Bars, Needle In The Hay, A Fond Farewell
I would absolutely love to see your reaction to Chester Bennington and Chris singing the live version of "Crawling". Their voices compliment each other in a beautiful way.
My favorite live clip of Cornell is his acoustic performance on Letterman when he performed "The Keeper". There was something so pure & fragile about the performance that brings tears to my eyes every time.
Miss this man's voice so much. His work is my top repeat played on my Staylist. His original work is amazing and his covers of other artists is as well. Never enough of him. This is another great react (Show Me How to Live). ... Cochise brings out his loud power... Roses on a Grave is softer... Nothing Compares 2 U is small studio (Sirius) is a tribute... the man took The Beatles song A Day in the Life... and on stage live he reformed with one guitar what they needed two takes with half orchesta... the range he had... I repeat his Live in Sweden cover of Led Zep's Thank You often (blame it on a woman)... which is a patient sweet soft song that he reshaped from the original and is really restrained from his power and different vocal voices. Never enough of him.
There really aren't many voices like Chris. I miss him. If you haven't already looked into them I'd recommend I am the Highway by Audioslave and also Say Hello to Heaven by Temple of the Dog for Chris Cornell vocals.
I'd throw Cochise in as an honorable mention if she hasnt heard that one yet. You cant get much angrier than naming your song after a native american that single handedly wiped out half a town and entire military battalion
Would love to see your reaction to their best song in my opinion: Shadow of the Sun. The gradual build through out the song with the guitar and Cornell’s vocals. Just brilliant
Been waiting for this, Audioslave is one of my absolute favourites. The entire band is so in sync and Cornells voice matches the heavy groove of Wilk/Commerford/Morello sooo well!
You absolutely have to check out Chris Cornell's live acoustic performance of Like A Stone that he did for AOL (weird host). One of the best performances he ever gave. Makes me cry
If you're familiar at all with the way they were touring at this time, and the size of the shows, and the length of the shows, and the fact that this filming was after having been so insanely busy and the demands that they were under because THE WHOLE WORLD loved them immediately and wanted to see them live... it's a million wonders his voice is even able to make sound at this point. These dudes gave the crowd 100% effort 100% of the time. So glad we got to see this lineup of amazing musicians come together and make the magic they did. Even if it was short lived.
I love that you're listening to Audioslave! "I Am the Highway" and "Like a Stone" are other Audioslave songs you should check out. "Like a Stone" is much more mellow, but somehow still intense.
You should cover the album recordings with Chris. You’ll hear his pure sound there. As you know live is rough on voices as they’ve been singing for months. Especially “I am the highway”.
Oh hell yeah. Phenomenal! Love it whenever you do Chris Cornell and Audioslave songs, one of my and many people’s favorites this one. ‘What you are’ or ‘getaway car’ hopefully next, Audioslave, Tool, and RHCP are the top three rock bands from my youth, doing these sort of tunes means a lot to all of us.
Chris Cornell is one of my all time favorites. By the time he got to Audioslave, he couldn't get the high notes like he did previously. A good contrast to this song would be some of his early Soundgarden stuff where he sings way up high and makes my hair stand on end.
I've seen them in Paris in 2005, and it was a great moment. Chris Cornell was a vocal beast ... but Tom morello is also a Guitar beast ... So, it was a beast concert :).
Love how this song is a great mash up between these amazing musicians bands. You can hear all of their signature sounds. Soundgardens Soul, Rage's Funky Bass and chunky guitar... Just outstanding!
My world fell apart the day I heard CC departed this earth, life struggles take the best of them! Such an incredible inspiration growing up in the 90’s. RIP Chris
this is my favourite Audioslave song, so a good choice to check out. really love the dynamic between the verse and chorus. man, would really love to see your take on "Jesus Christ pose" by soundgarden, probably their most intense song vocally
One of the most jaw-dropping vocal performances that I ever heard from this vocal god is the Song "Beyond the Wheel" in 1990 in Dusseldorf, Germany. He has many songs that are amazing-"Loud Love", "Bulldozers and Slaves", " Birth Ritual", Cochise" and many more.
Audioslave is such incredible band! I remember getting their first album for Christmas when I was in high school and I listened to it on repeat for months! Chris’s vocal style here is pretty different then in Soundgarden but it’s still jaw dropping how talented he was! Miss him everyday! 🥰😭
I remember the early days of your channel and how cool it was to see you experience music that was new to you and it's amazing to see that continued journey. Great song choice by Audioslave, they have so many great tunes. Chris was an amazing voice! RIP
Tom Morello has another band called the Night Watchmen where he sings and he has done some music with Serj Tankian as well... and he also did the soundtrack for the Iron Man movie.
I'm afraid you haven't quite experienced the full range of Chris Cornell in his prime. He was a sight and sound to behold. Slaves & Bulldozers, Beyond the Wheel, and Birth Ritual really showcase just how high he could go; the face melting kind of heights. After those, check out When I'm Down from his Euphoria Mourning album to really get a sense of the kind of passion and emotional expression he can convey through his singing.
Their second album is softer and has a different feel but is extremely consistent throughout with masterful writing....his voice shines insanely hard in it and is an incredibly underrated album
Chris was just overflowing with talent- phenomenal vocalist, excellent songwriter and even a highly original and poetic lyricist. To have that much artistic ability crammed into one human being was astounding. It must’ve been very intense, just to be him. The studio version of this song does feature better enunciation, as well as his fabulous high belting more clear and front and center. All of these musicians were way too talented to simply languish, so the formation of this band was a great means to continue their powerful creativity.
The studio version goes harder than the live performance for once tbh, he was able to hammer the hell out of his vocals when he wasnt exhausted from concert full if it. He had a lot of anger in this one, almost as much as he did in Cochise
I thought every little kid played that game where you sang and used your open hand with your index finger to gently hit your larynx for that effect. It's so fun. He uses it really creatively here, like almost toward auto-tune or something. It's really cool.
"I Am the Highway" was always one of my favourite Audioslave songs.

Absolute best band I've ever seen. So tight, and shredding vocals. Plus, they know how to work a crowd. Amazing.
You should do Shadow On The Sun from the same album. It’s a great song and Chris has an awesome scream at the end.
In my opinion it's his best vocal performance in Audioslave. Not necessarily their best song, but if only looking at vocals it's my goto
Love the Studio version. It seems harder for him to recreate on stage from the performances I’ve seen, but I know if she does it’ll be the Live version. Hopefully PinkPop as it has the best improvised guitar solo by Tom.
My all time❤
Such a good song. Definitely a song that has Chris's best vocal ranges 👍
Yessssssss! Shadow on the Sun is one of my all time favorite songs!
@@Jimmy1982Playlists I love qotsa and them crooked vultures too😀
One of my favorites!
I saw him oppening for QOTSA and everyone was enjoying like he was the main number, fantastic concert.
This was near the end of the world tour ! His voice was tierd according to an interview he was in . he said he was struggeling with his vocals but i think it was one of the best live concerts ever!!
16:25
In the studio recording of this song, I really love how he sings the word "skin." You don't really notice it here, but again in the studio version he lengthen the word, almost stretching it in a way.
Not to mention that epic, epic scream he gives!
My favorite male vocalist of all time.
exploder is nuts... not even tenors can sing it, it goes up to D5
My heart aches so much that he is gone. One of the singular voices of my generation. RIP Chris.
With u brother
As a huge soundgarden/chris Cornell fan the anticipation of the album when was through the roof. We had been waiting about a year or more. The first song I heard was Cochise. They played to that anticipation with that song and delivered. I knew the album was going to be huge after just the few seconds of Cochise.
To me he has a sort of haunting feel in his voice. Like he's
tapping into a dark part of the soul that most people don't want to give voice to.
I vote for cochise
Yeah I was thinking Cochise also!
You're "about to set this fucker off"
my absolute favourite Audioslave song is Wide Awake would recommend 110% especially the performance he did on the songbook album. Live acoustic performances he did you can feel each lyric hitting hard
Chris Cornell's "Sunshower" off the Great Expectations soundtrack. Unbelievable lyrics, vocals, and emotions.
Best CC song
"Though your garden's grey, I know all your graces someday will flower in a sweet sunshower" one of my favorite lyrics of all time
Love your reactions! So fun to see when you really get surprised and impressed by small things! Chris is the best singer in my book, lot of his solo stuff that are amazing. Thank you!
Apparently Chris strained his vocal chords right before this, he usually goes even harder in a full band setting. legend.
I love Chris Cornell’s voice. Probably my favorite, but the band itself is criminally underrated. Tight as hell!
The studio version of this song is absolutely amazing
I absolutely love this episode. As a 20 year touring monitor engineer, I have learned so much from you in just, what, 2 years since lockdown? Thank you. You help me help my singer.
No other voice like it.. One of a kind in my opinion..RIP🙏
Yeah he and Staley are 2 of the best of the 90s grunge Era.
My top vocalist are Eddie Vedder and Layne Staley and Chris Cornell!! 😊💓🤘✌️
Why does watching Elizabeth always put a smile on my face 😂.
Thank you for this great review, this song makes me cry almost every time I listen to it. It's just so good on so many levels.
Chris is my favorite rock singer. He was the only celebrity death that ever actually made me sad. Huge fan.
Same here, hurt hard and still does.
I actually cried when he left. I've only done that one other time, when Ronnie Van Zant died.
I would absolutely love to see your reaction to Chester Bennington and Chris singing the live version of "Crawling". Their voices compliment each other in a beautiful way.
I got to see them perform together in 2008 and saw it live.
@@nathanxweise1 you lived my dream
My favorite live clip of Cornell is his acoustic performance on Letterman when he performed "The Keeper". There was something so pure & fragile about the performance that brings tears to my eyes every time.
Chris Cornell, beautiful voice, beautiful man.
You graced this world with your presence. 🏵
They literally re-ignited rock. So so so good. Several of their songs on my running playlist!
The only v0icr close to to Chris' is Richie Kotzen....similar tones and both have crazy range.
You have to listen to Cochise. The "Cochise scream" is mind blowing.
You absolutely have to check out Chris Cornell's live acoustic performance of Like A Stone that he did for AOL (weird host). One of the best performances he ever gave. Makes me cry
She did, and you’ll enjoy it.
You need to do Soundgarden’s Beyond the Wheel. His vocals on that track blows away pretty much everything he’s ever recorded.
Yes! The live performance from April 1990, right after Andy passed away. Gets me every time.
Especially the live performance of it in Germany....phenomenal
The 2010 version at the Showbox beats the 90 one to me. 93 in Toronto is also better imo. Don't think there is video though.
He was still able to pull that song off in 2016/2017!
This one and the live performance he did with Chester are my favorites. Two people that left us way to early. Miss them both.
I Am the Highway, masterpiece from Chris Cornell and Audioslave.
Tom is a guitar God. Please watch the studio version, it will give you chills
Elizabeth, you should check out Chris Cornell's song "Seasons" circa 1992.
I need to see your analysis of "rich men north of richmond"!
Love how this song is a great mash up between these amazing musicians bands. You can hear all of their signature sounds. Soundgardens Soul, Rage's Funky Bass and chunky guitar... Just outstanding!
I really hope you add Birth Ritual to your list of Chris Cornell songs to analyse. Incredible vocals that you will love!
"Jesus Christ Pose" is a good screamer
My world fell apart the day I heard CC departed this earth, life struggles take the best of them! Such an incredible inspiration growing up in the 90’s. RIP Chris
this is my favourite Audioslave song, so a good choice to check out. really love the dynamic between the verse and chorus.
man, would really love to see your take on "Jesus Christ pose" by soundgarden, probably their most intense song vocally
The official video for this song is cool too. They superimpose themselves into the film Vanishing Point from 1971. Awesome movie and an awesome video
Criminally underrated band.
I remember the early days of your channel and how cool it was to see you experience music that was new to you and it's amazing to see that continued journey. Great song choice by Audioslave, they have so many great tunes. Chris was an amazing voice! RIP
When I got their self-titled album back in my teens, I played it so much, the disc warped. Cochise and Gasoline were some of my favorites.
Totally Awesome songs!! "Cochise" and "Gasoline" and the official video of "Show Me How To Live" awesome video!! 😊💓🤘✌️
Beth Roars does a great reaction to when I'm down live in 2010
@@briannahayes3495 I've seen it.
Yes, I'd love to see her reaction to those earlier vocals!
One of my favorite Audioslave songs. RIP Chris Cornell
Their second album is softer and has a different feel but is extremely consistent throughout with masterful writing....his voice shines insanely hard in it and is an incredibly underrated album
RIP Chris. I will always be sad that I never got to see him perform live. Such an iconic voice.
SOOOO glad you reacted to Audioslave! You’ll have a lot of fun with them. I’d highly recommend Cochise next. Rock on 🤘🏼
Shadow on the Sun is also a great song from their debut album.
