As your long time fan can I kindly ask you to react to something from Black Pumas or at least put it on a waiting list? 'Colors' or 'Know You Better' live versions are stunning! And Eric Burton's vocals are otherworldly great! :)
Hey Elizabeth, I have a suggestion I think you will find interesting. Can you please listen to “Remarkably Human” by Nick Johnston? It’s an instrumental, about 6 minutes long, but it keeps you alive every second of it.
Dave is a wonderful singer. I would recommend that you listen to this songs acustic raw MTV version. I think you might enjoy it even more (off youtube of course now that you have done it here).
So true. Art is subjective... that does not mean it does not convey universal truths. Those truths are subjective, but If the message is true, all of the interpretations are correct. A Van Gogh painting may not mean the same thing to you as me. It might remind me of childhood, and you might think of an event in your middle age. But the painting moves us both, in the same way, for different reasons.
That's life unfortunately I have lost a ton of friends it is a big reason to my lack of a band now. It happens so frequently I am fine so is he also I rarely listen to Nirvana or Foo Fighters for that very reason. People ask my why that is why I love Rock, metal is included in that Metal is sub genre of rock more metal than rock though.
Everlong, to me, is one of the most nostalgic and sad songs ever. I literally can’t hear without crying and i still love it, but it does take a toll on me
It's funny how she was saying he was 'joyful' in his delivery, when this song was written at a pretty dark time in his life. It was spurred by a bad breakup. But she's not wrong, he's probably in a lot better place, emotionally. Also, I'm with you; Hearing the lyric 'If everything could ever be this real forever, If anything could ever be this good again'. That's so packed full of longing and bittersweet emotion, that I tear up, too.
Makes sense, i think it was written at a transitional point in his life as he found a transitory love right after his first divorce as well as… everything else. Like finding the love/strength to move on through the pain while finding love for what you just lost
@@MikeWallibothose lyrics alone is what makes this my favorite song of all time, ironically me and my ex girlfriend were so into it when we were together and yea she’s an ex now and it’s still my favorite. Fuck the rear view boys keep it moving life’s to short to dwell.
Dave is an amazing human. I saw them in ‘97 during which the guys in the crowd tore a crowd surfing girl’s shirt off. He stopped the show, gave her his shirt and proceeded to lecture the dudes. I was 17 and I will never forget that moment.
It's still haunting to me that Dave recorded the first Foo Fighters album virtually alone, in the same studio Nirvana recorded their last song...carrying the torch...Everlong. RIP Kurt and Taylor.
@@SallySkellington94that version did not ended on the album, tho. There are other songs that Dave recorded while still on Nirvana that ended up on other projects. I can think of two, from the Pocketwatch album, recorded under the psedonym Late!: Marigold (later appeared on a Nirvana single, I guess for Heart shapped box) and Friend of a friend (Foo Fighters later recorded that song for the album In Your Honor). The Pocketwatch album is pretty good, unfortunately it's not on Sporify
just saw Alanis Morrisette last week and i didnt knew she put images of taylor during ironic as soon as I saw him on the screen i started crying ahahah
Seeing Dave live in Ullevi changed my life, he fell of the stage after the first few songs, and broke his leg, and then proceeded to have it fixed in place behind the stage, before returning to the stage in a chair with a medic and a bottle, and finishing the entire concert, he is truly the goodest of people, and we do not deserve him in the slightest
After the passing of Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins last year, they performed a tribute concert with several different guest drummers. Among them was Taylor Hawkins' son Shane, who sat in for his dad while performing "My Hero". To see this kid play his heart out in honor of his father is just incredibly powerful and touching, I recommend anyone who is a Foo Fighters fan to check out that performance.
Man that kid held the entire crowd and even Dave was in awe. It was like his dad held the sticks through him then let go when his solo came and he became as good as his dad
Dave Grohl is the real deal. No posing, no bull, just a guy having the absolute best time, with an entire audience in the palm of his hand. The world needs more Dave Grohls, music certainly does!
I'm not a F.F. fan, but what I have seen of Dave Grohl, he seems like he's just a down to earth average Joe who likes to play music and happens to be able to make a living doing it, kinda like the Keanue Reeves of music. to see how he treats his fans is heart warming. the world and music needs more people like him.
He gives himself some credit for coming up with this brilliant riff.... despite the fact that he can't play guitar particularly and has no idea what the notes are.
Half of my brain is screaming “how can you never have heard Everlong?!” And the other half is happy for you because hearing it for the first time is magical. I was at this Wembley show in 2008 and happy cried through the whole song.
Yeah she's gotta know how much weight this song carries, His imperfect performance (pitch & timing) is only 'magical' because of the gravity of what's gone/going on and where he is. If he performed it like that when presenting the song for the first time I don't think she'd be so forgiving/romantic/praising of his bum notes 😄 and I'm sure the first thing he'd do would be go for a second take.
There’s something about this song that feels like forever and also a single moment. It’s intimate and it’s free and it’s anthemic. An absolute classic.
Dave wears his emotions on his sleeve. If you watch the entire show, he comes close to breaking down a few times. His eyes are so expressive. He's an incredible frontman!!
I've seen the Foo Fighters at Rock am Ring this year. Yes, he's not shy of showing emotions. He cried two times during that show while talking about Taylor and performing his favourite song. He also got Violet on stage to sing "Shame Shame" with him and it was an awesome moment to see this man so proud and full of love for his daughter. And yes, the memorial for Taylor Hawkins is very emotional, but also his speech at Lemmy's memorial brings me to tears every time.
@nancywalker1325 If this performance was from their 2008 Wembley show, look for the song Best Of You and you can see him get emotional during that song.
When they played "Everlong" for David Letterman's final show, with all the scenes and memories from the show's 33 years flashing on the screens behind them, and the lyrics "If everything could ever feel this real forever... If anything could ever be this good again..." is absolutely one of the greatest and most heartfelt TV musical performances of all time. I was fortunate enough to watch it when it was broadcast and it's one of the musical memories I will never, ever forget. Dave Grohl and the rest of the band (RIP Taylor) are really something extraordinary.
It was Letterman's favorite song. He had the band play it on the show five times over the years, including when Letterman came back from heart surgery and then again for that final show.
Too bad Letterman hadn’t been nearly as funny for a about 20 years 😉🤣, IMHO. Just say’n I remember watching his original Late Show when I was like 10 to 14 years old. I always thought he was way funnier back then when he kinda did whatever he felt like, and Didn’t take himself SO frick’n seriously, Lol 😜. Almost like Craig Ferguson did for years on The Late Late Show, and again… in My opinion, Ferguson was by far the most consistently ‘laugh out loud’ funny Host from All of the late night shows.
Please try to get a "Tea Time" with Dave! I'm sure I can speak for all of us here, we would love it and I'm sure you and Dave would totally hit it off! Thanks for this! I have never seen it. Beautiful! Love you Elizabeth!
This song is so incredibly emotional and beautiful. Even the album version with a full band and more aggressive sound still has this feeling. One of my favorite songs ever.
The studio version is different, but this performance is so good. I love Dave, he’s genuinely a good dude who’s been through hell and come through a better human. The Keanu Reaves of Rock.
@@NicholasBaldwin-om9xv and if Dave ever decided to do it, it would happen. He's done a bunch of collaborations with so many different musicians. Musician you'd never expect to see in the same room together, but there they are, jamming. Like Dave, Lemmy, and Billy freaking Gibbons doing Run Run Rudolph. I NEVER thought I'd see Lemmy and Billy doing a song together, but it happened, and it kicked ass.
This concert was at Wembley Stadium june 2006, It was their biggest show ever, I'd known of them before this concert, somehow I got a live feed. The energy and connection with the crowd immediately made Foo Fighters my favorite band.
Everlong is one of the most beautiful songs written while I've been alive. Was a great rock song on the record, and then an acoustic version with just Dave took on a life of its own. The two versions evoke different emotions. The Color and The Shape is and always will be a start to finish listen for me.
It’s also on the Skin & Bones live album. One of my very favorite albums. Acoustic versions of many songs, including Marigold, which I think is the only song recorded by both Nirvana & Foo Fighters. Correct me if I’m wrong!
A lot of people miss out on that AT&T acoustic show from 2000. It might be the best Dave's voice has ever been - and I've been a fan since the beginning. Bonus: Everlong is between Exhausted and Floaty in that set. I don't think it gets any better than that.
As a teenager in the 90s, this song hits so different. And this version from Wembley is probably the best live one. I would watch this video with my daughter when she was a baby, and she loved it. She’s now 13 and still connects with this version. Thank you for your awesome analysis!
Dave Grohl is one of the greatest stories of rock and roll history. His journey and his love and joy for writing and performing is incredible. The sacrifices they make and trials they live thru make these kind of rock heroes truly special.
Dave is so genuine, which is core to the concept of Rock. Three chords and the truth. It's not supposed to be overly polished. It's supposed to come from the heart.
The guy kept performing when he had a cast on his leg. He gives SO much. After some devastating losses in life, he not only has kept going, but has shown us how being a "rock star" can be a force of good in the world. He is just a good human being.
"Breathe out so I can breathe you in, hold you in" One of the best lyrics ever! This is my fave Foo song. It was also David Letterman's favorite song, and they performed this song for him on his last show before he retired
My favorite verse. I had to have a tooth pulled. I was not numb enough , I could feel it all. I was frozen, though move. That verse was repeated in my head over and over until it was over.
That's a tall claim lots of musicians are nice actually most are, seriously I hung with so many, a club a go to has had a we hang together vibe. It's somewhat famous for it musicians book it for shows and big artists will have meet and greets there. I have met tons of varying artists of every style so many are super sweet.
Dave is perfection, Elizabeth you have to see him in concert, you will laugh , cry , but mostly feel more alive! For some one to experience so much loss he continues to give all.❤
Dave isn't the best singer technically wise, but he's a great frontman. His way of interacting with his audience, his humor, his energy and his storytelling make Foo Fighters shows unique. He sings from the heart and he has been through so much terrible in his life (lost his mother and his two best friends and bandmates). If you meet him off stage, he is like everyone else, warm, funny and extremely humble. He has never let success go to his head. Everyone should go to a Foo Fighters concert if they get the chance, it's two and a half hours you'll never regret.
Dave doesn’t let it get to him because he knows what it’s like to be at rock bottom. Dave is an amazing human being who’s had terrible things happen in his life. He is also an amazing dad that spreads the joy of music with his kids knowing how much pain it can bring. Dave is the parent all parents should want to be.
Everlong is not about Dave singing great, they play it for their fans participation at live shows. This is not the song to do a vocal analysis of Dave.
Having 50,000 people sing your song to you has to be a wild feeling. Happens a lot at Foo Fighters shows. The Foo's once held a contest on several radio stations across the country. The winners got a free show in their own garage. Another time a group of 1000 musicians gathered in Cersana Italy and recorded the Foo Fighters song - Learning to Fly . They posted it on YT and sent it Dave . With the request for The Foo Fighters come play for them in their small town. When Dave saw it he cryed and a month later the band showed up and played for them and their friends. For Free.
That opening is a master-class in crowd symbiosis and control, he opens the first notes everyone's excited, he then *steps* their excitement down to a volume ambience conducive to how soft and intimate he wanted to make it. I can also see he wanted a little softer but chose to just push a little which was a exceptional choice. ❤ Exceptional work, thank you.
Dave Grohl is one of the most beautiful human beings alive on this planet. Hands down the BEST concert I’ve ever attended was a foo fighters concert. I saw them play in Atlanta for my 30th birthday the year he broke his leg. The man performed on a moving throne the entire night in the rain.
Definitely need to do The Pretender. It's such an amazing showcase of Dave's mix of dynamic and rythmic musicality with the hard rock of just letting go.
You used the word "joy" a lot in this video, and that's exactly what a Foo Fighters show is. Pure, unadulterated joy. They are so much fun, and Dave gives so much to the audience.
The song was written for Louise Post (one of the leads in Veruca Salt), whom Dave was dating after he separated from his first wife. It's apparently about making such an intense connection with someone that you long for them with your whole self. Louise recorded backing vocals for the track... via telephone. Crazy, but very fitting. One of my favorite songs of all-time.
@@Erawk AND Louise said in a story, the original version of the song had her whispering the love note instead of Dave! I would love to hear that version!
Thank you for the back story, I never knew it. My favorite song ever too. My mom loved this song too and we would sing it together on the radio. She died of brain cancer and suffered for 3 ys. So everytime I hear it I smile and cry.
One of the most beautiful humans who has chosen to share himself with us. I like watching his live performances. In particular ones where he brings people up from the audience to play are fun to watch. You can tell how much he loves sharing the stage to give them a moment.
Dave didn't just go to Foo Fighters when Kurt died. He was Foo Fighters. He recorded all instrumentals and vocals for the first album. The man is an absolute machine musically. I highly recommend watching the documentary Foo Fighters: Back and Forth if anyone hasn't seen it.
I thought the same thing when she said "he went" to Foo Fighters, as if it was some band that already existed.. not quite Elizabeth, more like he created Foo Fighters.. by himself.
Yep. That was how Dave dealt with Kurt's death. Locked himself in a studio with some instruments and let his emotions drive. Thus the Foo Figthers were born.
This is one of those songs that really needs listening to as both the "studio" version and as the full acoustic version. Two VERY different sounds and I love them both.
100% with ya. This is a Great "quality" video of a live performance. But I don't think this version does the song justice. Full band, playing loud, is the way this song hits best. Also, Dave has become a better vocalist with age...so I hope she chooses some more recent songs as well.
I think there are singers and there are performers. Dave is an amazing performer and front man. Energy, charisma, his ability to read the audience. Amazing.
Everlong has ALWAYS been one of those most sincere love songs to me. Your reaction just confirms it. The fact you picked up nigh on instantly just confirms how great of a bard he is. Plus in mentioning how good he is, his first big payday he got excited because he could buy a bigger grill.
We love uncle Dave. Check out his drum battles with 10 year old nandi 3 years ago. She called him out on UA-cam, he responded and the rest is history. That really helped get through 2020
I'm a lucky man. Over the years I've seen Springsteen play Born to Run, Prince do Purple Rain, Deep Purple do Smoke on the Water, McCartney do Hey Jude, Beach Boys do Good Vibrations, Fleetwood Mac do Go your own Way, Dire Straits do Telegraph Road and dozens of others doing their biggest songs but NOTHING was better than seeing Foo Fighters finish with Everlong in Sydney. Given the chance, Foo Fighters is a MUST see concert.
This is very different from the studio version. Dave is playing the audience. He is creating an experience through the song that Carrie’s the audience along, building tension to a crescendo.
@@Heroo01 can I send you some of my papers from 10th grade? My english teacher gave me a D , but I would be honored if the grammar police would look them over.
@@griechland Pointer for you, basic syntactic parallelism is important for a sick grammar burn. Sentences begin with a capital letter and end with a period, but the middle matters more!
I highly recommend Dave Grohl's autobiography. He recorded the audio version himself and his passion is so evident in every word. Also slightly heartbreaking as he recorded it before Taylor Hawkins died
The Foo Fighters put on one of the best live shows I've ever seen. Dave and the band put so much energy into their performances. I've seen so many bands live and they still rank up their as one of, if not the best.
Your emotional reaction is exactly what’s it’s like to be at a foos gig! It’s an awesome experience, I had goosebumps and tears in my eyes for most of the set
The way they've been playing it live for a long time with the instrumentation dropped out for half the song is really powerful, and I love it. The record version has a whole different energy to it. Both versions are amazing for different reasons.
One of my all times happeist moments was when I was 17. I was driving around these country roads with my girlfriend at the time, currently my wife, and it was a late evening. I had the acoustic version of this song burned on to a CD, and it came on. I had never felt more in love with my future wife at the time, than I was in that moment. The song is just so beautiful and invokes love in its rawest form. It perfectly incapsulated how I felt about her, in words I couldn't find myself. This song will always take me back to that specical moment, whre I knew she was the one for me. 20 years later, and I couldn't be more blessed to have her and my daughters in my life. This performance was like a hybrid between the acoustic version and studio version, both wonderful in their own ways. Thanks for checking this song out! Amazing reaction, per usual.
I can't help but get teared up every time I hear a live version of this song after watching Dave play this for the Taylor Hawkins tribute concert in London. You should definitely watch that whole concert, but Everlong in particular from that concert. If you think this version was emotional, holy shit. Its also definitely worth checking out the studio version of this song, because they play it a lot differently
If you're not a foo fighters fan, or if you haven't experienced an amazing live concert - go to a Foo Fighters concert.. They're incredible live. You'll still recognize most of the songs. Truly on of the greats. It's always worth the ticket.
Having now gone to one of the current FF shows, I was struck by how different it was to those with Taylor Hawkins(RIP). They had magic together, which was part of what I loved about their shows. Will always be a fan, but won’t attend another live show. Fortunately, I can always watch the numerous live shows with the twin flames of Dave & Taylor burning bright. 🔥🔥
I cant tell if she is crushing on Dave or just infatuated with the music, either way it made an incredible video showing that much wonder and happiness from such an awesome song
Having seen them in concert several times, this song is always bitter sweet. It's their most popular song, so everyone loves it, but they always end their set with it. So, it's the best song but it also is a signal that the concert is over. "If anything could ever be this good again" and "You gotta promise not to stop when I say when" hit so much harder when you know the show is ending.
They don't always end with it. They have done at more recent gigs but that wasn't always the case - it was in the middle of the set at this concert, used as a transition from their acoustic songs back to the louder songs.
I love how he preformed this. Everlong is one of the first songs people may have heard way back when and it’s so emotional special song so the slow part is fun because he’s making a special moment for all the fans but teasing them at the same time by not singing it like the album but then at the end you get a little taste of the album version and that would bring a smile to everyone’s face too. He’s so Special.
I’ve loved Dave, Kris and Foo Fighters’ music for many years and this has been one of my most favourite of their songs. Imagine the chorus lyric after losing the biggest-hearted dog before his time this year. That he wrote this in ‘96 after all he had experienced is so respectable. Thank you, Elizabeth.❤️
Dave performing “Times Like These” at the tribute concert for Taylor Hawkins is a heartbreakingly beautiful version of the song and shows the true power of music. He’s singing the song just him and a little guitar. His voice is breaking, tears on his face, you can see the grief in his whole body. Then he steps back, the band joins in and he wails on his electric guitar for a minute or so. When he steps back up to the mic it’s the Dave Grohl we all know and love. He poured out all of his grief through the music and it was truly wonderful to see.
thisfelt like seeing them live the first time all over again. Thank you for making this and welcome to the forever Foo Fan club. No go out and really see them live there's nothing quite like it
@davepayne164 Considering the definition of musician is "a person who composes, conducts, or performs music," I'd say he qualifies under all merits. Is he a guitar virtuoso? No. Does he belong amongst the greatest musicians? Yes.
As a drummer I love that after Nirvana that Dave found his voice as a front man for his band and playing guitar! Dave is a great drummer but I’m even more impressed by his ability to carry on with his unique singing style and guitar playing to front a band! As a drummer yes I’m jealous but in a healthy way because I see the results of hard work and ambition! Hats off to Dave and the Foo Fighters. RIP KURT COBAIN AND TAYLOR HAWKINS ❤
I always hear this song with a tinge of sadness amongst the awe and love. It means it’s the last song of the night… but even the walk back to the car after a Foo Fighters gig is wonderful. They are the best live act.
@@AndyRoo312 they opened with it on most of (I think) the 2015 “throne/broken leg” tour too. It’s not exclusively the last song of the show: just always what I think of when I hear it.
This is my favourite Foo Fighters song. The thing is, this version is SO different from the recorded version. It’s almost a completely different song. They’re both great but so different, I kinda prefer the recording for different reasons, the recording is much more upbeat and energetic rock tune, whereas this one is much more vulnerable and emotional. Edit: ok, the end of the song is generally the way the whole song usually sounds.
Yeah, this is a good example of why I prefer when she uses the produced original (along with the music video and everything that adds to the experience) rather than a live performance - it's a great live version for a stadium of fans who love the song, but doesn't give the right impression/reaction to someone hearing the song/band for the first time.
Dave is so AMAZING live, just a natural crowd pleaser. So many songs from the Foo have that amazing build. Check out the lesser known "But Honestly" for one of the most satisfying builds and eruption at the end. Saw them live twice and him screaming to In Your Honor in the show opening was so amazing I've been a life long fan since. Great video-more Foo!
Dave has expressed so many times that he plays guitar like he's playing the drums. When he wrote Everlong this was his approach the low stings like toms and kicks, high strings like snares and symbols. It's a very simple song to play but extremely emotive and has probably made me teary every time I've seen them play... and I was in the crowd for this performance. It was spectacular!
This song in all of its different versions can simply "wash" over you. It's a song you don't just sink into, you immerse yourself within it. It's longing, it's happy, it's sexy, it's touching. So many facets that are impossible to touch on in a single listening.
I think this was a very emotional moment for Dave personally, that was their first performance in front of a crowd as big as that. I've heard him talking about how much that concert meant to them... You probably didn't notice, but he admitted that he cried during this performance. Dave is probably my favorite music person, he's really the incarnation of goodness, and he is self taught multi instrumentalist, never took any singing or playing lessons which only gives more to his genius... You should do any song from wasting light album next, it's probably their best work. Glad you started to dig into them, you're in for a wonderful ride.
Everlong is one of my all time favorite Foo songs!! Thank you SO much for this reaction! I needed this in my life today! And cried like a baby watching this performance again ngl!! RIP Taylor your deeply missed!! Much ❤️
I just love the purity that she shows listening to music. That fire and love for it like when I was a kid. Been a professional musician my entire life and she teaches me that I lost that joy at times. Thank you!
for all Dave G has been thru he is so loved and such a great person, you find this out in so many appearances on stage and off, just wild and all about the fans. RIP Kurt and Taylor. Adore the FF!
FINALLY!!! DAVE AND THE FOO!!! Their live stuff is equal to their recorded music. Thanks Elizabeth. I've been patiently waiting. Please please do more on the Foo. Best live act out there.
Someone must have mentioned it by now, but the music video for Everlong is absolutely amazing as well. The studio version of the song rocks extremely hard, and the video is just...one of a kind really. I'm not a big Foo Fighters fan overall (love Dave as a person though) but Everlong will always be an incredible song.
For a reaction, I'd highly recommend the video for The Pretender, and the performance of My Hero with Shane Hawkins (Taylor Hawkins's teenaged son). For personal enjoyment, I would recommend watching this entire Live at Wembly show. The Foo Fighters area really great at working ebbs and flows in their show, have no qualms about hitting the old favorites, and doing some stunt guests too (The encore from this show is.... pretty mind blowing.)
i love how he sang so gentle and intimate while randomly sprinkling in original guitar riffs full tilt it kept you on edge of your seat the whole time.
Love the way you reacted when the crescendo happened! When the acoustic buildup burst into the album version! It was like a blossoming of the grohl from the vulnerable to the pissed off! Love it!
Foo Fighters is one of those great bands, where no matter how famous they got or how much the ticket price went up, you never feel like you were cheated. You always get your money's worth.
One of my fave stories about FF is that when they performed on Conan yrs ago, they didn’t stop at one song. With no cameras rolling, they played a whole damn concert! To give the studio audience a full performance. 🥰
Dave broke his leg in one concert and had a doctor hold his leg still while they finished because people paid money to see them and he didn't want to leave without giving them a show. I think he kept playing for another hour.
I've been lucky enough to see them a few times. This song always feels monumental. They're clearly well aware of its importance to people and they treat it with love. To me it feels like the kind of song that represents a night you will never forget. That you will continue to hear throughout your life and always be transported to another point in it. I just love it.
This is just one of those songs that easily connects to everyone on an emotional level. None more famously than David Letterman. There was a reason he chose Foo Fighters to come and play this song one last time on his last night as host of The Late Show.
The man was the drummer for one of the biggest most influential bands in the world... changing music and lost his good friend and front man. Years later, he's the front man for one of the biggest bands in the world... keeping rock music alive... and loses his drummer. The man still goes on performing. They should write a movie about this guys life. A true story of tragedy and perseverance. Keep doing what you're doing, Dave. You bring a lot of happiness to this world, regardless of your own sadness. God bless, man!
I’ve been to a lot of concerts, rock and otherwise. While the Foo may not be my favorite band, they were absolutely the longest show and most fun I’ve ever had the pleasure to be at. Nashville 2015. He was in a leg cast and STILL they blew the roof off!
as someone who has never properly thought about the deep intricacies of singing, your expertise in your analysis really make me appreciate my favorite songs so much more and makes me fall in love with them all over again :) thank you and keep up the good work!
Dave is one of the most humble, unassuming people on the planet. I've met multiple celebs, and he acted like he wasn't part of the 2 biggest bands ever. Man was kind, friendly,, and just... someone you could hug. Thank you, Dave.
You absolutely must check out their song “Walk” from their 2011 album “Wasting Light”. It is such an inspirational song that has helped me through so much depression, and I would heavily recommend checking out the music video instead of a live version to really capture the true recorded vocals that are so so powerful.
I watched this entire concert on a concert series channel, a little more than 10 years ago, and it has since been my favorite Foo Fighters performance. Everlong, in particular, is incredibly moving.
Hell yeah! I’ve been hoping for a Foo Fighters analysis. I’m a huge fan, and their concert experience never disappoints (seen them live 3 times). It’s amazing how he goes back and forth between singing and screaming without impacting the quality of his sound. His energy on stage is so much fun and makes the audience feel like part of the show. Their videos are a lot of fun as well. Please, please analyze more Foo Fighters!
Dave grohl is the ultimate entertainer. Especially if you don’t mind a few hundred “f bombs”! I’ve seen him twice in the foo fighters, he has yet to disappoint. You could watch hundreds of his live videos and still get those same chills. If you get the chance you should go see him in person. Also, he’s very likely to do a tea time with you if you can get your team to reach out
The magic of Dave Grohl is that he is a great guitar player with outstanding charisma, a great voice, and a decent drummer. He knows a ton of things. But his STORY - how he connects with the audience, what he's been through, and the fact that he is still such a good dude - is incredible. And it comes out through his songwriting and his singing. Rock as therapy and perseverance. It's my favorite flavor of rock.
This was my go to song as a teen in the 90s. The acoustic version he did with him and his guitar is just magical. I've been a Foo Fighters fan since I first saw the video of "Big Me" on MTV and the last time I saw them in concert was about 6 years ago in Knoxville. They were just as amazing then as they've always been. Dave Grohl is just a good human being.
It would be awesome if you could analyze "The Pretender" from the Foo Fighters next. I think it has the perfect contrast to this song and is very powerful!
This video was an absolute treat! I'm so glad you did it 😄 Some backstory... He wrote this song when he was divorcing his first wife but over time it became an icon to fans and the song that closes every show, that's the mix of emotions you hear :) The original version is the power one at the end but most of the times they do the acoustic version to close or a mix of both like this time, that's why the audience is so eager and he teases with the guitar racing thing, because the explotion is coming. It has always been one of my favourites, specially the acoustic version. The last time I saw this song live was on Taylor's tribute at Wembley, it was heartwrenching, I hope I can see them again soon ❤

As your long time fan can I kindly ask you to react to something from Black Pumas or at least put it on a waiting list? 'Colors' or 'Know You Better' live versions are stunning! And Eric Burton's vocals are otherworldly great! :)
Don’t know if you will see this or not but hope you are doing amazing also just wanted to recommend the pretender from foo fighters it’s so good ❤️👍
Hey Elizabeth, I have a suggestion I think you will find interesting. Can you please listen to “Remarkably Human” by Nick Johnston? It’s an instrumental, about 6 minutes long, but it keeps you alive every second of it.
The only real thing: the Christmas sweater 🤘 , everything else is just clothing! 😁
Dave is a wonderful singer. I would recommend that you listen to this songs acustic raw MTV version. I think you might enjoy it even more (off youtube of course now that you have done it here).
"You can sing a song to 85,000 people and they’ll sing it back for 85,000 different reasons.” - Dave
I think he's singing so quietly so the crowd can sing along at the same volume.
As a drummer he lost his frontman...as a frontman he lost his drummer 😢 my heart breaks for Dave
And then he lost his mom..😢😢😢
💙
and then as a frontman, he lost his drummer, dudes had a rough go :(
That's life unfortunately I have lost a ton of friends it is a big reason to my lack of a band now. It happens so frequently I am fine so is he also I rarely listen to Nirvana or Foo Fighters for that very reason. People ask my why that is why I love Rock, metal is included in that Metal is sub genre of rock more metal than rock though.
Fk, I never heard it put like that B4, I got a lump in my throat broo
Everlong, to me, is one of the most nostalgic and sad songs ever. I literally can’t hear without crying and i still love it, but it does take a toll on me
Me too.❤
It's funny how she was saying he was 'joyful' in his delivery, when this song was written at a pretty dark time in his life.
Relatable as hell.
Dave is an amazing human. I saw them in ‘97 during which the guys in the crowd tore a crowd surfing girl’s shirt off. He stopped the show, gave her his shirt and proceeded to lecture the dudes. I was 17 and I will never forget that moment.
Kurt did that too, shows the amazing people they are/were.
Damn that’s so sweet
that's amazing, 100% the best way to handle that situation. also the girl got Dave's shirt which is a sweet bonus
Yes. ................................,
That speaks to his character…solid and safe 🥹🤘🏼
Lol 9 mins in and we haven't got past the intro haha 😂
@@jvcbc Pocketwatch is a great album if you can get hold of a copy of it, I think the copy I have is a bootleg of a bootleg 🤣
@@danielerreguin2001I think he was her drummer for a couple of the tours before Dave invited him to join the foo's.
I remember that, he’s such a chad
and, as the story I've heard goes, Dave refunded the audiences money for the 'less than perfect performance ' he gave...😮
He is most likely the coolest famous person alive right now. Hero status.
Then for the rest of the tour, he sat on a throne of guitars
After the passing of Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins last year, they performed a tribute concert with several different guest drummers. Among them was Taylor Hawkins' son Shane, who sat in for his dad while performing "My Hero".
To see this kid play his heart out in honor of his father is just incredibly powerful and touching, I recommend anyone who is a Foo Fighters fan to check out that performance.
It really is a beautiful thing to watch.
It was beautiful 😍 and heartbreaking 💔 all at once! I feel for Dave. Rip Taylor and Kurt.♥️
Man that kid held the entire crowd and even Dave was in awe. It was like his dad held the sticks through him then let go when his solo came and he became as good as his dad
it is on my Staylist.
And My Hero is one of my favorite songs.
Dave Grohl is the real deal. No posing, no bull, just a guy having the absolute best time, with an entire audience in the palm of his hand. The world needs more Dave Grohls, music certainly does!
Couldn’t agree more!
Just a down-to-earth man living his best life.
@@biglew1161I don’t think he’s ever lost that knowledge of what it feels like on the other side of the stage - just being a fan.
They are so good live it's scary lol
He never gives himself enough credit. What makes him so relatable and loved by his fans.
It's like the audience knows the song, the way they're singing along.
@@MonkeyJedi99 Eh? Of course they know it 🤣 But she said she hadn’t heard it before.
@@sophie_cheekbones Ehem.
What I was going for was humor.
Thought the same. I think it’s impossible to never have heard this song in 2023 😂
Yeah she's gotta know how much weight this song carries,
His imperfect performance (pitch & timing) is only 'magical' because of the gravity of what's gone/going on and where he is. If he performed it like that when presenting the song for the first time I don't think she'd be so forgiving/romantic/praising of his bum notes 😄 and I'm sure the first thing he'd do would be go for a second take.
The acoustic version of this song always gives me chills.
Nandis' version does too!
But seeing Taylor behind his kit just broke my heart in the best way possible.
@@GassersGhost I know you mis spelled best, but man was it the best fitting mistake ever when talking about Taylor. The man was a beast.
I completely agree!
That performance at the Memorial Concert for Taylor breaks me every time 😢
I've seen the Foo Fighters at Rock am Ring this year.
Nope, that didn't happen at Wembly, he did after Taylor died. In this concert, they had a blast!
This is my favorite performance of the song
“The defenders of foo”. Loved that name he called them.
Weird hearing a slow version of this song
Please try to get a "Tea Time" with Dave! I'm sure I can speak for all of us here, we would love it and I'm sure you and Dave would totally hit it off! Thanks for this! I have never seen it. Beautiful! Love you Elizabeth!
I can’t imagine anyone not guilting it off with him. He’s brilliant and humble
This song is so incredibly emotional and beautiful. Even the album version with a full band and more aggressive sound still has this feeling. One of my favorite songs ever.
Yes........
That album version with the "full band" is actually just Dave on all the instruments. What a legend
@@kennedennedy Not so. He played everything on the first album, but Everlong was recorded with Nate and Pat playing too.
The studio version is different, but this performance is so good. I love Dave, he’s genuinely a good dude who’s been through hell and come through a better human. The Keanu Reaves of Rock.
Aaaand now I need a movie about Dave played by Keanu....
@@markorollo. Keanu has his own band, we can just have them play together.
This is a good performance, but I also like the one that they did on the last Late Night with David Letterman show, as well.
Yes..........
I’ve always gotten caught up on “Breathe out, so I can breathe you in.” Makes me tear up every time.
you're not alone
"Gotta promise not to stop when I saw when." She said 😭😭😭
Yes.......
Everlong is one of the most beautiful songs written while I've been alive. Was a great rock song on the record, and then an acoustic version with just Dave took on a life of its own. The two versions evoke different emotions. The Color and The Shape is and always will be a start to finish listen for me.
The acoustic version is so many levels above the original, and the original is so many levels above most other songs.
For anyone looking for it I think that acoustic version was done on the Howard Stern show. It's a beautiful version
I think the first time I heard the acoustic version of the song was on Howard Stern years ago. Howard LOVED this song.
Yes
Dave is so genuine, which is core to the concept of Rock. Three chords and the truth. It's not supposed to be overly polished. It's supposed to come from the heart.
YES. ❤🤘
❤❤❤Well said!!!!🤘❤
The guy kept performing when he had a cast on his leg. He gives SO much. After some devastating losses in life, he not only has kept going, but has shown us how being a "rock star" can be a force of good in the world. He is just a good human being.
He kept performing with an uncast broken leg, and a doctor holding it while he sat in a chair...
"Breathe out so I can breathe you in, hold you in" One of the best lyrics ever! This is my fave Foo song. It was also David Letterman's favorite song, and they performed this song for him on his last show before he retired
Agree...such an incredible line
My favorite verse. I had to have a tooth pulled. I was not numb enough , I could feel it all. I was frozen, though
move. That verse was repeated in my head over and over until it was over.
Dave Grohl is simply the nicest guy in music ...his joy is tangible and his fans really feel it ...if Dave smiles ...everyone smiles...
That's a tall claim lots of musicians are nice actually most are, seriously I hung with so many, a club a go to has had a we hang together vibe. It's somewhat famous for it musicians book it for shows and big artists will have meet and greets there. I have met tons of varying artists of every style so many are super sweet.
Agreed
"Hey! You don't come to my show to fight! You come here to dance and have a good time! Get the F#ck out!'
Nope, the title goes to post malone, but dave is up there as well
There's a number of really nice musicians.
Another of the nicest of all time was Ronnie James Dio. RIP.
Dave is perfection, Elizabeth you have to see him in concert, you will laugh , cry , but mostly feel more alive! For some one to experience so much loss he continues to give all.❤
Yes......!!!!!!
We also need to remember him taking his BBQ and cooking brisket to help at homeless shelters a couple years ago!
Absolutely top notch in concert. He exudes that joyful warrior vibe and connects fully with the audience throughout the show. Unforgettable performer
Try asking King Buzzo about Dave Grohl))
Having 50,000 people sing your song to you has to be a wild feeling. Happens a lot at Foo Fighters shows. The Foo's once held a contest on several radio stations across the country. The winners got a free show in their own garage. Another time a group of 1000 musicians gathered in Cersana Italy and recorded the Foo Fighters song - Learning to Fly . They posted it on YT and sent it Dave . With the request for The Foo Fighters come play for them in their small town. When Dave saw it he cryed and a month later the band showed up and played for them and their friends. For Free.
You forgot to mention he played that show in Italy with a broken leg in a full cast.
I second this!!!
I third this@@jodiemanthei6160
Nope
DOA, Feast and the Famine absolute bangers.
I read rythmic masculinity at first hahah.
What I love about Louise's vocals is how subtle they are in the mix. Easy to not notice they're there, but magic once you know
Everlong is about Seether? I never knew!
don't forget that part of the whispers at the end of the song is Dave reading a love letter he wrote for Louise.
Seeing the Foo Fighters live is one of the best experiences I have ever had in my life. You feel the passion every member gives on stage!
His manager actually told him he was going to have to get band members so he could tour.
Everlong is the sweetest love song laid over a banger of a rock and roll number, One of my favorites of all time. Thank you, Dave!
The acoustic version tears your heart out and stomps on it it's beautiful
Agree, the acoustic version deserves it's own analysis.
I think there are singers and there are performers. Dave is an amazing performer and front man. Energy, charisma, his ability to read the audience. Amazing.
This song is a warm blanket of love... the sound is nostalgic and yet timeless. You can listen to this on loop, and be in sound bliss for hours.
That really helped get through 2020
That's the kid he brought on tour?
True
That was incredible!!!
Dave and Nandi were the light in the pandemic darkness

I highly recommend Dave Grohl's autobiography. He recorded the audio version himself and his passion is so evident in every word. Also slightly heartbreaking as he recorded it before Taylor Hawkins died
And its free in UA-cam!!! Its amazing❤
I've read it, but I didn't realize he'd done the audio book. I'll definitely be looking for it.
The Foo Fighters put on one of the best live shows I've ever seen. Dave and the band put so much energy into their performances. I've seen so many bands live and they still rank up their as one of, if not the best.
This is one of the reasons I keep saying that they should be brought in to do the Super Bowl halftime show.
Your emotional reaction is exactly what’s it’s like to be at a foos gig! It’s an awesome experience, I had goosebumps and tears in my eyes for most of the set
YES....!!!!!!!!
The way they've been playing it live for a long time with the instrumentation dropped out for half the song is really powerful, and I love it. The record version has a whole different energy to it. Both versions are amazing for different reasons.
Half the song? He played the entire song alone and did a single chorus with the band.
I’m so glad Elizabeth is doing an analysis of Dave Grohl. I am constantly amazed at his ability to go from a tender ballad to a full scream.
I thought it was jus me, there's always been a sadness in this song for me, now I'm old and I got piled up trauma I cry for this on th reg
If she watches My Hero with little Shane Hawkins on the drums she’ll not stop crying for a week
Dave’s tone and delivery in this version in Everlong is so intimate and authentic.
If you're not a foo fighters fan, or if you haven't experienced an amazing live concert - go to a Foo Fighters concert.. They're incredible live. You'll still recognize most of the songs. Truly on of the greats. It's always worth the ticket.
Can not wait to see them again in May.
Yeah they are the best band I've seen live. So much energy.
Not to be disagreeable, but because rock isn't the genre she grew up with and was trained in, she probably would NOT recognize ANY of the songs.
@@deplorablepatriot8605 that doesn't matter. Their energy is infectious.
This song never fails to give me goosebumps
We never say 'goodbye' ...
He’s so
Special.
Thank you for doing this song. I feel like the world would be a better place with more people like Dave.
There's no doubt in my mind. Dave is a genuine and generous person
No go out and really see them live there's nothing quite like it
I believe that David Grohl will be recognized as one of the greatest musicians of all time.
That would be extremely unfair if it happened.
💯
Great drummer, absolutely. Great frontman? 100%. Top class songwriter? I would say so.
Great musician? I don’t think he’d even claim that.
This song makes me cry every time. It takes me straight back to high school, late 90s, and just smashes my entire being into tiny pieces.
I always hear this song with a tinge of sadness amongst the awe and love. It means it’s the last song of the night… but even the walk back to the car after a Foo Fighters gig is wonderful. They are the best live act.
It wasn't the last song at this gig so it carried a different feeling - it was the signal to get moving again after the acoustic songs
I kept waiting for the intro to end and the song to start....
It’s a great version but I wish it had more of the original version for her to analyse.
Yeah, this is a good example of why I prefer when she uses the produced original (along with the music video and everything that adds to the experience) rather than a live performance - it's a great live version for a stadium of fans who love the song, but doesn't give the right impression/reaction to someone hearing the song/band for the first time.
The album version is much better
Favorite song of all.
I CANNOT wait for you to explore Dave Grohl more, his voice feels like a warm hug
He really is THE BEST!
Dave is a fucking legend. One of the best drummers and one of the best frontmen, ever.
Can’t wait to see them again.
Perhaps the best encore I've seen, proper Rock and Roll
i love how he sang so gentle and intimate while randomly sprinkling in original guitar riffs full tilt it kept you on edge of your seat the whole time.
This performance is absolutely incredible. I've grown up listening to this song basically my entire life, but I've never heard it this way before
the studio recording of monkey wrench has an insane part supposedly recorded in one breath definitely an amazing vocal performance.
Yeah, i was just thinking that I would love to see a reaction to monkey wrench
I'll third that, vocal coach reacting to that part of monkey wrench would be a lot of fun
I agree!
Didn't Dave say that he's done that in one breath twice and has never been able to do it again?
It's an honour to share the world with Dave Grohl.
You absolutely must check out their song “Walk” from their 2011 album “Wasting Light”. It is such an inspirational song that has helped me through so much depression, and I would heavily recommend checking out the music video instead of a live version to really capture the true recorded vocals that are so so powerful.
great song, with a great video, with a great movie for inspiration behind the video.
Also, he’s very likely to do a tea time with you if you can get your team to reach out
Dave is great with interviews, if anyone hasn't seen his appearance on Hot Ones, you owe it to yourself. ;-)
I'm so glad you did it 😄
Some backstory...
