    I love your shop. I left a job to start a new one last year and was immediately laid-off at the beginning of the COVID outbreak. My boys do not have a reliable babysitter nor a daycare in town. I started building furniture last year to compensate for the loss of income. I started with a drill, impact driver, handsaw, and various hand tools. I now have a router, router table with a lift, many router bits, miter saw, table saw, skill saw, shop vacuum, dust collection system, air compressor, various pneumatic nailers, and much more. I am amazed by how quickly I was able to acquire new tools while saving money and paying bills. Thank you for the video.

    Great video Dave. You make it look simple but I know how much fiddling about these projects take. The Jessem guides are a class act. I installed mine months ago and I admit they haven't had a huge amount of use, however I think as I start building my cabinets that will change. Great explanation of using Jessem clearcuts especially placement while cutting.

    Thanks Dave. I made one to your specs and love it. Luckily, my plywood was exactly the thickness of the 150 pound Mag Switches, so the whole job took about an hour. This is rock solid and I love the simplicity of removing it to put other jugs on my fence.

    Dave, this is pure and simple genius. The stock guides are useful and precise, and make ripping much safer, but I wouldn’t be able to use them if I had to unscrew them every time I needed the bare rip fence. This plan makes installing and removing a matter of seconds, so I don’t hesitate to use them. I made a simple chute under the saw table for storing. Thanks!

    Stumbled across this old video... not only will I use the Magswitch idea for my Jessem stock guides, but that trick of using the clamp to secure the far side of the fence is great (10:18). My Delta fence only locks on the near side rail and this would eliminate any little bit of fence flex when cutting heavy/large stock. For light weight or small cuts the fence is solid, but large stock may cause some movement and this will greatly reduce that chance.

    Dave, great video and it is still helping your audience 3 years later. I'm considering getting the Jessem Stock Guides but I need to some advice. I have a Delta 36-725 Saw and the inside dimension between the fence faces is 1 -15/16ths and not the 2 inches this system requires for mounting the guide rail. However, if I use your approach, I could mount the rail on a piece of plywood that could be cut to fit between the rails. As long as I don't exceed the prescribed 3.3" height above the saw top, do you think this is a sound approach?

    • @DavidStanton
      @DavidStanton  3 роки тому

      Hi Edward. My setup is 2 and 7/8ths" to the bottom of the stockguides bar. I can't make more comment than that, a question for Jessem.

    David... nicely done video> i have the guides and think they are great. The one question/concern I have is how to push the wood (timber) past the guides when it is a narrow piece. I've been using a long push stick to get it through but was wondering if you had a work-through idea for this issue when the front guide gets a bit in the way.

    Your use of Mag Switches is great and especially timely since I have a few that are little-used and just got home with a new set of the Jessem hold downs. Since my old Powermatic 72 is 38" front to rear across the cast iron, I think I'll use a Mag Switch as a hold down for the tongue of the fence too. Is there any reason these saw guides can't be reversed to the opposite side of the fence for use on a table-extension router table? I'd appreciate the feedback of owner/users of these guides. Thank you all.

  • @charlesbattle4380
    @charlesbattle4380 2 роки тому

    Thanks David for the answer, but I was talking about the length from knob to base. The reason for the question is that width of my fence does not allow me to place the device directly on the fence. I must create a layer to bring it up to the level of the ridge and then place the magnets in each end as you did. I estimate that it would be the width of a 2 x 4. That is the reason for a longer magnet. You had to reduce the height. So...are there any magnets that are longer that you know about?? As you can tell, I am a newbie. Thanks for your help.

    • @DavidStanton
      @DavidStanton  2 роки тому

      OK, I get it, you mean deeper? Well, the smaller load magnets are narrower and may well fit in a narrower fence situation. MAG-0004 is a 30 mm wide unit that overall width is 33mm.

While my table saw fence is roughly the same as yours my router table has a bigger fence and I've seen woodworkers use these for both rather than the extra expense of buying the Jessem router specific guides. Hi Edward Gibbons! There was a company brand badge ontop of the rip fence.

    Doesn't seem like this will work for the DeWalt 7491 RS. Or am I mistaken?

      Correct. These are designed for heavier cabinet saws.

    why were you "jiggling" the board when you had nearly finished the cut? was it to position the board closer to the fence?
    I don't see these guides being very helpful on such a large sheet, they are useful on smaller rips.

    • @DavidStanton

      I was demonstrating how the guides hold the panel in place so well that even when I tried to bounce the board around or even pull it back towards me the guides held it secure.

    After a few years the o-rings or tires on these things melted into a sticky mess. I have never seen o-rings do that. In addition to ruining the stock I was cutting the rollers have that goop on them and I don't know how to clean them since they have the one way bearing in them. I loved these things until this happened. Now I would not buy them again.

      UPDATE: I finally got in contact with Jessem's Customer Support. The urethane o-rings on the stock guides are affected by high humidity and especially salt air and I assume heat. I live on a little peninsula on the South Texas coast so my shop has plenty of salt laden humidity. The solution is to remove the stock guide arms with the rollers and store them in the house when they are not in use. If they are used frequently I would check them frequently to see if they are starting to get soft. Jessem's representative said these are special o-rings and other types of rubber will not work. They are sending me replacement rollers so they have good support.

      Hi Donald. Good to hear that Jessem isn't afraid of letting you know the truth about their product and also that they are sending replacement parts for your particular climatic conditions.

    I bought one just a few weeks ago whwn it was on sale otherwise couldnt justify the cost. Little did know that even a good idea/product can be limited by its weakest link. The set i received only had 4 socket screws with wing nuts even though there are 8 holes made for them. There are 4mon each side of the aluminum extrusion and in order to remain ridgid over the years it need secure hold down. Well apparently spending over $250 did not justfy adding 8 screw sets vs half. Shame thst the customer service was zero help. I remain loyal to companies with good customer service but that was not my experience so will be returning product.

      Hi John. As you can see from the video I screwed mine down to a piece of ply and it works great. Interesting that you have some kind of for site that you believe the unit will fail in a few years when you have only had it a couple of weeks?

  • @Heavygen
    @Heavygen 4 роки тому +1

    Having the plywood insert fit so tightly might push the faces of your fence out of square a bit.

    • @DavidStanton
      @DavidStanton  4 роки тому

      Not a chance. It is a snug fit but the mag switches are doing all the work.

      @@DavidStanton 6:40, you are putting a lot of force to fit the assembly to squeeze it between the fence faces. Whatever you say, but I myself wouldn't make it so snug if I wanted my fences to stay 90 degrees to the TS surface.
