There were always people getting offended by every form of popular music. Remember, there were Chrisrians who wanted us to believe AC/DC and KISS were Satanic. And outrage over even early hip hop and rap.
@@SuprousOxide Those types you refer to were mostly extremists. The Christian churches also lost their minds over Pat Benatar's song "Hell is for Children" which was about child abuse.
Fat Bottomed Girls was released as a single with the song "Bicycle Race" as the "B" side. The line "get on your bikes and ride" is what ties the two songs together. To further the bond between the songs, the songs are on the album "Jazz." Included in the LP - vinyl version - was a poster of a whole lot of naked ladies on bicycles who appeared to be getting ready for a bicycle race. Could they get away with that today? I don't know, but I have the album and the poster.
This is a great rock and roll song written by guitarist Brian May; hence, it's pretty heavy on the guitar. It was released as a double A-side single along with Bicycle Race, written by Freddie. It's worth a listen, but you may need to put out a disclaimer for the music video, depending on which one you pick. They did release a family-friendly video and a risque video. There is a crossover with the lyrics in both songs.
As a Queen fan for 48 years, (and having seen them live twice with Freddie singing) if you forced me to choose a favourite Queen song, then it would be this
Freddie still needed stage experience? At this point in 1978 Queen had been together 7 years so the experience was already there. Even a few years before this, Freddie was already flamboyant on stage. The flamboyant costumes may have gone but his flamboyant performances never waivered.
Freddy was a legend! This band was way ahead of there time! Absolutely amazing! True music at its finest! Great artist and always will be one of my favorite!!!
"Fat Bottom Girls", which is about a young man who comes to appreciate women of substantial girth, was written by Queen guitarist, Brian May. Brian told Mojo magazine in October 2008: "I wrote it with Fred in mind, as you do especially if you've got a great singer who likes fat bottomed girls… or boys." It was released as a double A-side single together with the Queen song "Bicycle Race". Fat Bottomed Girls" and "Bicycle Race" were released together on a double A-sided single, and the songs refer to each other. Near the end of "Fat Bottomed Girls", Freddie shouts, "Get on your bikes and ride!" Then in "Bicycle Race" he reciprocates with the line "Fat bottomed girls, they'll be riding today". FYI - Freddie was inspired to write "Bicycle Race" after perusing the Tour de France, which occurred outside of a hotel room he was renting in France.
A much earlier excellent live performance by Queen is from their concert at the Odeon Hammersmith and it is called simply "White Queen"! You will love it so put it on your list for some day when you are bored!!!!
Just ran across you're channel. Love the way you put energy into you're videos. In as far as "Media Moments..." Yeah. LOL. You'd have loved living in those times by way of what can tell of you're personality in you're videos. If I had had to put it in a poem, "There was allot more time to be free, allot more time to be me."
I grew up with queen and remember hearing the song as a teenager, I am German, so I did not get the whole meaning of the song in those days but I liked it because if you always struggle with not being that skinny but a bit more curvy, it felt good. and even today I would probably be much easier offended if it wasn't queen. The part , get on your bikes and ride is referring to the song bicycle race which was much more controversial ( especially the video), but as I said, if it wasn't queen I would probably be even more shocked. They were always open and honest about their `Rock Star Life`and their are no hidden scandals.Brian May said in an interview, that they probably would not go their these days.
Always a favorite Queen song of mine. Brian said that he wrote this one for Freddie who liked the presence of a big bottom on his partners. It is sad that praising curvy women would be a reason for censuring today. When this song was first released we LOVED it even though at that time most of us didn't have big bottoms. It was just fun and the "get on your bikes and ride" was really funny because so often we would see women riding on the back of a motorcycle with a very round behind or larger women riding the motorcycles themselves. Thank you for your reaction. Bicycle Race is the sister song to this one, that one written by Freddie and he makes reference to fat bottomed girls as this one makes reference to bikes.
'bicycle ' and 'flash gordon' are good songs too . Fat Bottomed Girls is from all those concerts where you saw fat girls on their boyfriends shoulders trying to get a better view
Not that early Queen. Jazz was released in 1978 and was their 7th album. 🙂 Bicyle Race was on the same album. The video for this first single showed fat bottomed, naked women riding their bikes in a stadium. 🙂
what we have to understand about this album... is that is one of the first bands to release the album on DOBI sound cassette. and the sound was so incredible if you could afford the car stereo to afford it which I did :).... back in the 70s.... it is why queen sold so many cassette tapes....
HEY Hon… The BEST version of this song you could ever see, is Queen’s live performance at: MILTON KEYNES BOWL in 1982! SO. MUCH. FUN… and Freddie’s live vocals blow the studio recording out-of-the-water! (There’s a good reason why Queen is known as the only band who are actually even better LIVE.)
This is not not "early Queen, it was released in 1978. Saw them on that tour and the whole band was unbelievable. Don't know what you mean when you say that here "Freddie was still a diamond in the rough" . He was already one of the greatest showmen around. By the way , the video is not live. It's something shot in a studio for promotion and the song isn't even the original album version which is longer.
Stone Cold Crazy is early Queen. This song is played every 5 minutes on classic rock radio. Stone Cold Crazy is just about as heavy as Queen ever got it's close to proto-punk.
Queen had so many fun and rocking songs . Others are Dont Stop Me Now , Radio Ga Ga, Somebody to love , Hammer to fall and I want to break free . But check out Barcelona by Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé
Oh you gotta see this performed live .. Milton Keynes 1982. Let’s just say Freddie is HOT wearing the red jacket 🔥 and he just can’t let the stage bannister, scaffolding, or pole be ignored. 🤣
Media today: You are right ...they would moan and cry....and honestly - Nobody should care. What is more entertaining ? The one about the Fat Bottomed Girls or a song about "Eating a Salad" ? Rock was always about Rebellion and upset some people. So this is the right way to do it. We need more of that today if you ask me.
According to producer Roy Thomas Baker the bike company that lent them the bikes for the nude models to ride, the company complained when they bikes were returned. They had to change all the seats. 😂
Making such a fun song so serious robs life of even more joys as the tension and stress move closer to those who hate nothing and love everything and away from those who hate everything and love nothing. Not progress IMHO. This is an awesome song compacted into radio play time limits that still had fills and solos, as well as great riffs and chorus. The only thing wrong with this song is it requires the listener to have a sense of humor and not take life so seriously...which has proven to be too much for some modern-day societies.
Actually this wasn't early Queen at all. Some of my all-time favorite songs by them are on the first 3 albums before they hit the radio and broke out. Queen II in particular is an amazing album with some of Freddie's best vocals, IMHO. I was lucky enough to see them live twice (one of the only good things about being old is that I got to see some of the biggest bands of all time live during their hey day) and they put on an amazing show every time. It was a great tune when it started and it is a great tune today and it is a shame there is too much PC in the music industry now at days!!! Get a clue PC is for the birds!!! Young lady you’re too beautiful and yes you are young so please do not convert into something that is full of liberal speaking it is not healthy!!!” By the way I am in love with you”❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
A song to make you smile, listen to it a few times and then forget it. From this album onwards, The Queen lost their magic for me (6 good albums before that). Now lots of POP-rocky-disco attitude, musically not very inspiring. At home, The Queen were overrun by the punk + new wave in the media (like other big artists), then went on tour several times, especially to the USA, until the blacks and all the night dancers discovered the R'n'B song Another Bite The Dust and freaked out. The third part of their career took off, at least commercially.
Get on your bikes and ride. You dont get it? Get on the back of my bike , little lady and let every guy behind us tell you how good you look from back there. 😂😂 then youll understand
Unfortunately nowadays there's a certain part of society that get their panties in a bunch over everything. Back then life was so much different and honestly we didn't give a 💩, this is just a fun song. That's it.

Ah yes, also back in the day when a lot more people were racist and had a lot of bias against others😂. This generation isn’t as sensitive as y’all old people think it is
I find it bizarre that there are times when people have a problem with "fat bottomed girls" but are completely ok with "I like big butts". Both of which contributed to the horribly ugly giant butts we see everywhere today. Big butts or fat butts? No difference. Both are gross.
Not early Queen at all. This is from their 7th album and was released in 1978. But I agree it sounds unpolished. It is not one of my favourite Queen songs. They made far better songs than this one fortunately.

Classic. I remember laughing at my baked brothers listening to that in the 70s when I was a little kid. " Bicycle! Bicycle! " 😂😂 Miss those days
The bicyle supplier who lend them the bikes wasnt amused about that, and they had to replace all the saddles.
That was Freddie all the time. He was born with the experience, talk about being in a class all your own. That was Freddie. RIP dear Freddie.
Queen was one of the biggest bands in the world around this time. This was from their 7th album.
