The double-A side to this single is “Bicycle Race”. Lead singer, Freddie, shouts “Get on your bikes and ride! A lyric from “Bicycle Race” states “Fat bottomed girls, they'll be riding today so look out for those beauties, oh yeah”. Brian, lead guitarist, was inspired to write this because Freddie preferred larger bums. I, myself and a young lady at the time, had a jiggly bum and embraced this song with glee! “Ride ‘em, Cowboy!”
Don’t forget on the album picture outside of the USA the crowd of girls waiting to take off on their bikes were seen from the back, naked, just in case you weren’t paying attention. Queen always has put on a great show.
My opinion is, many young girls wound up with anorexia nervousa due to the constant pressure to be thin. All the models and actresses were thin, and it had an effect on young girls.
Look how many people are commenting on this reaction already, this is how much we love Queen and how much we always will, there is no one who can touch Freddie Mercury’s legacy.
Freddie Mercury is the lead singer. Brian May on lead guitar, Roger Taylor on drums, and John Deacon on bass. You should read a little bit about Queen. Their story is amazing. One of my favorite songs is Love of my Life, live at Wembly. It shows how Freddie involves the fans in the shows. He loved the fans as much as they loved him. Queen's live performances are epic.
Something to consider about this song is that "fat-bottomed girls" weren't really the rage back in the 1970s. During the 2000s we've come to appreciate curves and people of all shapes and sizes but back then the very thin were the epitome of desirable (at least according to popular opinion). Queen singing about women with "a little extra" was pretty bold. I was a kid when this came out but sang along anyway. Another great choice, Rere. Cheers from Florida.
Rere I’ve just discovered your channel and very much enjoy your reactions. I’m 58 so was a kid and teenager during Queen’s heyday. Lead singer here and most always was the great Freddie Mercury. Freddie is considered by many including myself as the greatest front man in Rock history. No one commanded a stage or a crowd like Freddie. So many great Queen songs if you’ve not done We will rock you that’s a staple and classic. Another star who dominated the 70s was Elton John try Goodby Yellow Brick Road or his masterpiece Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeeding if you do this one I recommend the live version from Madison Square Garden. Keep it up you’re doing great and really enjoy your channel.
Commonly, this was played with it's lead-in track: "Bicycle Race"/"Fat-Bottomed Girls", as the 2 segue into one-another on the album [Just as: "We Will Rock You"/"We Are The Champions; was, always, known and played in tandem, in that fashion (becasue it, also, segued from one directly into the other, on the albnum; and the radio D.J.s usually played things in that fashion -as "album cuts" OR as if you were listening to the album with them. ...as 2 friends in a room, together)] and is, STILL, expected to be presented that way.E
No....i've been listening to classic rock radio since the 90s, and (unlike We are the Champions) i don't think i ever heard Bicycle with this song. This is the 2 classic rock stations Canadian Vancouver Rock 101 and American 92.9 Bellingham Wa i still listen to today.
Thanks for the reaction, Were! This doesn't need to be your next Queen reaction, but it is definitely one that should be on your list - "White Queen" from the Odeon Hammersmith, 1975!!
Never was a big fan of Queen but appreciated what they brought to the Rock & Roll table . The Queen Line-up , the Late Freddie Mercury on Lead Vocals & Piano , Roger Taylor on Drums & Vocals , Brian May on Guitars & Vocals , John Deacon on Bass & vocals . A fun side note on the band . Each member wrote a #1 hit single for the band . 😮
There was a poster with a hundred naked fat bottom girls lined up at the start of a bicycle race inside the “All That Jazz” LP by Queen. Keywords: queen bicycle race. Also, “Rubenesque” is a term describing women in paintings from Peter Paul Rubens 1577 - 1640. They were not skinny women. Fashions come and go but the beauty of women never goes out of style.
Have you checked out Don't Stop Me Now by Queen yet? It's really great. Freddie Mercury is the lead singer, but everyone in the band does the back up singing.
Queen songs I would recommend to you: "Keep Yourself Alive"; "March Of The Black Queen"; "Seven Seas Of Rhye" [Queen II version]; "Dragon Attack" 🔥🔥; "Doing All Right"; "Liar"; "Get Down, Make Love"; "Death On Two Legs"; "Tie Your Mother Down"; "Stone Cold Crazy" [then, go listen to MetallicA's cover version: from the Rubaiyat, 40th Anniversary album!]; "Sheer Heart Attack"; "More Of That Jazz"; "Princes Of The Universe"; "Don't Try Suic*de"; "Who Needs You"; "Under Pressure" [with: David Bowie]; "Hammer To Fall"... (et al.)
Thank you for your excellent reaction and to answer your question the rock music artists of the time were glorifying the real woman Queen and AC/DC with their song “ whole lotta Rosie “ there are other songs ( try AC/DC at River platt doing Whole lotta Rosie ) basically the bands were saying all women are incredible not just skinny women. Body positivity comes from within but hearing a song that you can relate to really helps. Please keep making these reactions and enjoying yourself as much as you can.
Yes some real rocking Queen, if you like this one, you will love their great tracks Liar, Ogres Battle, and Hammer to Fall. They did all kinds of tunes that became hits but these songs rock out, big time, like what you just saw. Rock On and Enjoy! 🔥🎵🎸🎤🎶🔥
Freddie Mercury (real name Farrokh Bulsara) was the lead singer of Queen and a real showman which is why they were always best live. Freddie sadly died of Pneumonia/AIDS in 1991 aged just 45 years old. As for the song here, it is goes in tandem with Bicycle Race and they were on the same single and album. The other single is referenced in the other song ("Get on your bike and ride." on this song and "Fat bottomed girls, they'll be riding today").
I am from this era. The only time i got front row seats to a show and it was Queen’s first American tour with Mott The Hoople in NYC mid 1970s. As for girls, their bottoms and body positivity. I know all kinds of guys and each one had his own take on what he thought was attractive in a woman. I know one guy who ONLY wants fat bottomed girls. So I figured, there’s a match for everyone. Life Is Good.
I wasn't completely sure from the accents, but you guys are Brummies! You are from the land of ELO! Which means YOU MUST attend the last ELO gig in Birmingham next year, as the last chance to see ELO live in Brum. Tickets are on sale on Friday 1 November! As for Queen and Fat Bottomed Girls, yep deffo a vibe. And probably only Queen would have dared to do it at the time and make it a success. The models of the sixties (i.e. Twiggy) and later did tend to emphasise a slimmer body image, which TBH I think affected women more than men. Men would still prefer round women (I mean, hello, boob jobs), but because magazines & ads aimed at women used skinny models, women were being presented with a different ideal of the female body beautiful than men generally were. I'm not sure how much that has actually changed. I think we are perhaps more aware of the pressure of such advertising and maybe that helps at least to mitigate it, but it's been a while since I even thought about it.
I was a young man, either senior in high school or freshman in college, when this came out. Much like I believe it is today, we simply found it funny. I think with very rare exceptions, peoples perceptions of what is most attractive, in either sex, changes very little. I think you are adorable, and it is enjoyable to watch both you and your brother experience music from my era. Keep up the good work.
If you chose to go down the Queen rabbit hole, you will have a deep and special experience. You may start with 'White Queen' live at the Hammersmith Odeon 1975.
Cool! Hopefully you get to hear also; TENEMENT FUNSTER sung by the drummer Roger Taylor and,,,,, "39" sung by the guitar player Brian May!! Great Job Rere and whom recommended!! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎🎸🤟🏼
Rere, I think you would really enjoy checking out som😮e R and B, SOUL , MOWTOWN etc. etc. etc. Check out Michel'le ( Something in my Heart ) Teena Marie ( Lover Girl ) for starters.
Fabulous day at Milton Keynes 1982. Garry Moore, Joan Jet. Then Queen with one of the mose memorable performances, ever. Thanks for reminding me of such an incredible day.
@@iannicholls2798 You LUCKY person! (Was Heart not part of the pre-Queen line up? I had looked up info online on the Milton Keynes concert, and the site I looked at had Heart listed as having performed just before Queen… unless someone got that info wrong on the site.)
Sadly, today very few live their lives as the person they were born to be. Social media and society in general puts pressure on people to be what is fashionable. Too many people now create a persona to be accepted and liked rather than just being themselves. Ironically, most would be liked much more as their natural self.
Men don't like to admit they love variety and it was media and magazines that pushed the agenda of size as it always has..They fill women's head's with nonsense about what's attractive and what isn't. And what men prefer..I could go deep into this but I'd offend so many people and upset people with facts I'll give it a pass... haha great reaction great song grew up listening to queen and dad had all the albums..I learnt Teo Toriatte as a kid the chorus is sung in Japanese and English.. can still remember to this day word for word.

Beauty trends, as far as figure goes, have always fluctuated greatly from era to era and culture to culture. When this song came out, thin was in and big was not.
Saying, 'fat bottomed girls', does make it sound quintessentially English and polite, compared to more modern references to women's posteriors! I suppose it was the cleanest way of putting it in order to not upset the censors at the time. Although, I'm old enough to remember this being played at a church disco I attended as a child, back in the day, and one particular Grandmother took exception and called it out as being, 'vulgar.' Even as a kid at the time, I thought that was a total over-reaction to something that was largely innocuous. The song itself is from their, 'Jazz', album in 1978. This and the one before it I had a bit of a soft spot for, as they were the first 2 albums I got to hear in their entirety, back in the day, and I loved every track on them. 'Bicycle Race', being the double A-side single to this song that were seemingly always played together on the radio. Or, at least, they used to be.
The irony is that Freddy Mercury was gay and really enjoyed singing this song. He’s such a showman. He was the first big superstar to die of AIDS. His talent and flare are sorely missed.
This was a song about groupies and the fact that rock musicians on the road were culturally inclined to indulge in favors from those who were attracted to stardom.

Great Choice Rere, it has another Song that is usually played together called BICYCLE RACE

Queen songs I would recommend to you:

"March Of The Black Queen";

"Dragon Attack" 🔥🔥;
"Doing All Right";
"Liar";
"Get Down, Make Love";
"Death On Two Legs";
"Tie Your Mother Down";
