Clover Studios, PlatinumGames and Treasure. The holy trinity of hidden gem action games
🔥🔥🔥
Dang straight
Don’t forget atlus
@@YunaCrawford he said action games.
@@LittleBigKid707b my bad. I thought underrated. But they had tails concerto, odin sphere, run saber,
One of the things I loved about Treasure was the amount of effort they would put into things that they really didn't need to do...and yet still did. They put a LOT of world-building into Mischief Makers, even though they didn't have to.
Absolutely!
Radiant Silvergun: Properly programmed, the Sega Saturn is a giant.
Certainly is!
Man, I love Treasure. Easily under my top 3 developers.
Definitely. They really danced to their own tune and did their own thing, convention be damned!
@@onaretrotip They sure did. They gave us such nice games like Guardian Heroes, Gunstar Heroes, Alien Soldier, Mischief Makers, Sin & Punishment among other gems.
So consistent, so strong.
I love Treasure's design philosophy. It's no wonder they make such great and charming games. Nice video!
Absolutely! Thank you.
Radiant Silvergun & Ikaruga! ♥ ♥
🔥🔥🔥
One of the things I loved about the Astro Boy GBA game was how it explained that Tezuka used his characters as actors in that they would fill different roles in his manga and anime releases so some of his characters could play good guys or bad guys and the game used this angle to give unique roles to the characters in the game.
Such a brilliant game. I discovered it researching this video and realised I hadn't played it. Bought it and played it solidly for days LOL
I LOVE TREASURE. One of my favorite game developer. Thanks for video.😘💋💖
Me too! Thank you.
Probably the most skilled video game developers of all time.
They achieved graphical effects on the megadrive hardly seen in other games, they got more out of the console than even Sega did lol.
They proved particularly how capable the Saturn was and any other hardware they worked on for that matter.
Many of their games were hard as nails but the gameplay in their games was second to none.
They're in a class of their own.
Couldn't agree more. They really lived up to their name.
"Treasure is the PlatinumGames of the 90s"
- Woolie Darlington Madden
😎👍
Does Platinum have Treasure's originality and variety? My understanding is Platinum Games just has Vanquish and Wonderful 101 and the rest are just Devil May Cry style games, right? I rather just play that McDonalds game.
I take this back, now having played a lot of God Hand and a good portion of Wonderful 101. Those games totally stand up to Treasure's best. Still dont like Bayonetta (and Vanquish is good, but not insanely good like most Treasure games)
That's an insult to Treasure.
Platinum's never made a best-in-genre game.
Not really. I'd actually argue Treasure is superior for the sheer fact that nearly EVERY game they made stood out in terms of gameplay. Platinum, on the other hand primarily does character action games with the odd non-hack and slash here and there.
Here I am in 2021 and buying as many treasure games as I can. They're just so collectible and fun to play. I own about 10 treasure games and I honestly can say each of those games are awesomely fun and replayable. Thank you treasure I wish you still made games
They truly lived up to their name and became a treasure of the industry.
Treasure will go down as one of THE VERY BEST developers of all time for the action, hardcore enthusiast. Im proud to say I own many of their games. Though , the one I didn't have and always wanted was Alien Soldier. I couldn't get myself to pay the crazy prices, so I opted for the excellent Sega Genesis Collection on Switch. I can say now I finally have this game at least in some physical form.
They sure will!
They compared Gunstar Heroes to Rocket Knight Adventures back in the day. Konami vs. Treasure. Treasure surely lives up to its name!
Certainly does!
I'd love to see a Gunstar Collection collecting the Genesis game, Game Gear game, Gunstar Super Heroes AND a HD Remake of the original. If it sells well... Gunstar Heroes 2!
Definitely!
This was informative and very well presented, thank you for making this, it must feel thankless at times but this was great! This was very helpful research for a Treasure retrospective I'm doing on Twitch on Wednesday, seeing your spotlights prompted me to include Rakugaku Showtime, the Tiny Toons cancelled game, and others. Thanks again!
Ah, thank you very much. Glad it was useful!
legendary dev, thanks for the vid
Definitely legendary. Thanks for watching!
OOOOOOH I love Mischief Makers SO MUCH. It's like, one of if not THE favorite game of the N64. I remember getting all the golden gems. It was very difficult. I remember you needed to beat the bosses without getting hurt even once to get one. Some of those were extremely tricky!
Definitely an underrated game on the console!
@@onaretrotip For sure! I still have my 100% safe file too, which also lists how old I was when I started it. I was 11 :D
The true ending of the game is different depending on what age you chose
@@Real1Gaming Oh wow, didn't know that about the age.
@@onaretrotip Yep, in the true ending Marina turns into a real woman and depending on your age she will be an adult or a kid
@@Real1Gaming Oh, cool!
GUNSTAR HEROES IS A LEGENDARY GAME-TIMELESS GEM. CRAZY THAT WAS THEIR FIRST GAME
Yeah, amazing first effort!
What a huge undertaking. Thank you!
I'm not a huge Treasure fan but your work is very much appreciated.
Thank you very much. Been working on this off and on for a couple of years (in dribs and drabs), but yes it was a lot of work. Happy with the end result though.
Blimey! well done mate, a superb effort. I was glad t ofind one game i was not aware of so thanks for that. A great round up of one the best developers ever. Amazing
Thanks, Faith! Definitely one of the all-time greatest developers here.
This is a fantastic documentary look at one of the best developers around. As soon as this popped up in my feed I thought, why hasn’t anyone covered them in such depth before?? It made too much sense. And it was a great watch. Thanks for preserving this history.
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed it, it was very enjoyable making it,.
Today is Treasure’s 30th birthday!
🎉
Another awesome spotlight video, Pete. Many games I've enjoyed over the years that I didn't really realise was made by Treasure. You've also put a few games on my 'to buy list' so thanks for spending my money, lol.
Thanks, Adam! Haha looks like this video has depleted a few wallets, sorry mate.
UA-cam sucks. This video is amazing, I've searched for basically this content and couldn't find it. Somehow I stumbled upon you finally. Excellent content, I like how it's deep and lengthy, keep it up. I just subscribed
Thank you very much! That's very kind.
Odd they haven’t released anything in such a long time..
😢
T B Yea, these days they operate as more of a licensing company than a developer. I was actually thinking about this today. Maybe they just got priced out, and gaming budgets finally caught up with them. Too bad.
2 years late but they’ve tweeted something about working on a “highly-requested game” for their 30th anniversary. Welp, it’s almost been a year now and there’s still nothing out of it. And that’s OK, cause you can’t rush quality especially at its peak
Great video. I love looking into the developer's history.
A lot of games i never knew they made.
Sin and Punishment 2 is great, but Gradius V is my favourite PS2 game.
If only Treasure could be asked to make Gradius 6....
Thank you very much!
I'm not gonna lie Pete, I was so invested watching this vid that I was gutted when you ended it how you did without covering Sin and Punishment on the Wii and their DS efforts. I understand why you had to end it but that's just testament to how enjoyable this video was for me. You did stellar work mate and you even informed me on a few things. This was a great Developer to cover and you truly brought your A game to this. Well done Pete 👏🙂
Ah, sorry to disappoint, Rob, but glad you enjoyed the video that much. I had so much fun making this one and was really pleased with the end result.
@@onaretrotip So you should be mate. You might say this video was a bit of a Treasure 😉
Very good video pete, i'd never really noticed before at how similar astro boy looks to betty boo lol
Thanks, Dal. Hahaha!
Absolutely fantastic vid Pete. The clue is in the name when it comes to these legendary devs!
Thanks, Ian. Certainly is mate.
What a better way to bring this series back than with the masters of Treasure! An amazing episode, well researched and written, as usual. There were a lot of games I didn't know were made by Treasure, since I kinda lost track of their work after the Dreamcast era. Really, really great job on this video.
Thank you mate, that's very kind. Glad you enjoyed it!
I always loved and enjoyed Treasure games especially when I first played MacDonald H , GunStar Heroes , Dynamite Headdy on my mega drive console theses games blew me away.
It’s a shame Treasure never got to finished to give a full game of Alien Soldier knowing that it’s half a game and imagine how awesome the game would have been
They really got the best out of the Mega Drive.
Treasure's Yu Yu Hakusho was my entire childhood. Countless hours of my brothers, cousins and I spent with the small number of characters. I wish they made a sequal to that game with characters from the front final season of Yu Yu Hakusho. I also wished we had money to buy a multi-tap back then. That would've been a blast with the family.
He forgot to mention that a "super" move can be performed when the Japanese character next to the health bar and the spirit bar is blinking.
I don't think I ever even saw a Mega Drive multitap back in the day; nobody had one.
@@onaretrotip You're right. It was one of those things that I would only see in magazine's but would never ever see in real life. Lol
Great topic dude so excited
Thanks, Stephen!
Somewhere out in the multiverse there is a timeline where Treasure merged with SNK to make a shmup rpg where you save the universe with space dodgeball.
😲
The first 12 seconds I’m like…..Alien Soldier in my head in that epic futuristic voice 😅
😂
I'm really enjoying your retrospective documentaries. Keep up the great work ✌️🤠
Thank you! I'll certainly try.
This is going to be AWESOME!
Thanks mate!
onaretrotip / this whole thing was fantastic. This must have taken you weeks to put together. I stand in amazement. You did a whole lot of research and editing. Crazy my brother.
I liked treasure(wario world and bleach DS being 2 of my favorites). Though they mainly made 2d shooters(not usually my taste), they were one of the few developers that really emphasized creativity and fun for their games.
Yes, they were up there with LucasArts for having a very free attitude to developing, so really did their own thing.
Eric P Actually they only made four (5 if you count Bangai-0) 2d shooters.. Radiant Silvergun, Ikaruga and Gradius 5 and Silpheed They have a nice variety. Rail shooters ,beat em ups, action platforming, run n guns and even an rpg.
Wow, an absolutely awesome documentary on Treasure mate, I know the sheer amount of time and effort you have put into this video and it shines through Bro, I think this could be your best video yet and what a developer to focus on to bring this series back bloody brilliant mate
Thanks, Scott. That's nice to hear as I was well chuffed with how this turned out.
Great video so far! Definitely one of my favourite developers!
Thanks, Nick! They have such a strong library it's hard not to love them.
WOW!!!! This was fantastic Pete and congratulations on finishing this "Life" project! lol ;) I love documentaries in general, but this was really something special. Thanks mate
LOL Thanks, Dave! Glad you liked it mate.
Awesome video and a good choice to profile, love their shmups.
Me too, love their games in general. They really did their own thing.
I'd love to see something like Platinum vs. Treasure or Platinum x Treasure. A crossover game with two studios that are offshoots of large game companies that want to do original action games
For sure!
great choice of developer to highlight
Yes, I thought so. Amazing what they achieved so early on.
A couple more fun facts about Gunstar Heroes: Only 1 person from Sega Of America approved it coming to North America, the rest of company who played it, hated it. That Street Fighter M.Bison/Vega Dictator looking dude in the red get up was originally Hitler but Sega had Treasure changed that.
It's funny that Treasure don't even acknowledge Light Crusader
. When starting the game up the Treasure logo goes by so quickly and it just plain looking without the usual special effects in their other games.
Ah, good info, thanks!
Yeah, Light Crusader is a weird one. Most people don't even realise it's a Treasure game.
Afro Powa / yeah...the story behind Gunstar Heros is great. I can’t believe it almost didn’t get made. That’s always amazed me.
Light Crusader really is the black sheep of the Treasure library. I played it about 2 years ago and I think it is well worth playing. The platforming isn't as awkward aa Landstalker thankfully. Love the style.
i love most of treasures games. especially gunstar heroes and S&P franchise.
yes, their game was mostly experimental, but somehow they create unique games in each genre they're in.
i'm even still believe that their alien soldiers was the first game ever that pioneered dodge and parry mechanics .
somehow i missed their unique games and expecting they will have new released game soon
Yes, I miss their games too :(
Used to love Radiant Silvergun! Great insight man!
Thank you!
Super Gaigh Bros / what do you mean “used to”? Lol 😂 It’s still an amazing game to play. I play it a few times a year still.
This looks wonderful, thank you
Thank you!
I’m playing catch up here Pete lol.
I really enjoyed that and learned loads about these games along with learning about some new ones that I never knew they made.
I was thinking where was Bangai-O on the DS and you snuck it in at the end :). A great game and one I picked up in my local CEX for a tenner not too long ago. I’ve been told by Eddie that the PAL release isn’t that common as well.
Take it easy mate.
Yeah, I bolted on a few of the DS games at the end there LOL. Glad you enjoyed it mate, I had a blast making this one.
Loving your videos man!
Thank you very much!
Awesome video Pete, I thought I knew all about Treasure until I watched this.
Thank you! Glad I could reveal some new info for you. Such a great developer.
More like treasure being the only company that can outdo indie companies, let alone innovate and create unique games combined with unique gameplay and art direction.
Indeed!
Great video thanks for the work.....Treasure is my favorite developer, the games are too original, hardly ever made sequels, and put actual love into the making...........number 1 forever!! (cause 2d ages so well)
Yeah, their commitment to rarely doing sequels really kept everything fresh. Certain companies could learn from that.
Gunstar and guardian heroes gaming perfection 😊
Unreal that Gunstar was their first game.
Great video Pete, what a monster! I've always been curious about Stretch Panic, it looks bananas.
Thanks, Nick! Yes, bit of a beast this one LOL
This is truly brilliant mate, really enjoyed it, great stuff mate 🙂
Thank you very much mate, really appreciate it.
Ah, yes, I remember Dynamite Headdy. Dang that game is difficult, especially bosses like the Gatekeeper and Twin Freaks. And some of the Maruyama (the purple cat) fights. And the Astro Boy game, which I haven't played before but glad my favorite anime has a game like Omega Factor, it looked pretty good based on the playthrough videos!
Omega Factor is excellent. Well worth trying.
Good video Treasure good games
Thank you!
This video was a 'Treasure' Pete! Amazing job well done 😀
Ha! Thanks, Mark!
Been waiting 3 years for this one. It was worth it!
Thank you very much!
Silhouette Mirage, a platforming Ikaruga, who knew!? I’d never heard of it but looks like it’s well worth checking out
Top work Pete
I know, right! Interesting that Silhouette Mirage used that "duality" mechanic before it appeared in Ikaruga. Thanks, Steve.
I picked it up years ago when the local rental place went under, it's pretty good, although WD did a number on the difficulty compared to the Saturn release.
@@dr.velious5411 the wife got it for me but won't let me play it till christmas. Really looking forward to silhouette mirage.
@@victerzian7877 Omg best wife. Treasure her. I hope you enjoy the game.
@@dr.velious5411 thank you brother looking forward to it. My next one will be Sin and punishment for the N64
Oooh! oooh! do a spotlight on IrEM studios, people dont realize they dont just do R-Type but also have SOOOOO many hidden gems in their library.
LOL Very much doubt I'll be bringing this series back as they take too long. I did have a couple of others I was working on over the last few years, so they may get finished at some point.
Awesome job here Pete.
Can tell a lot of work & research has gone into this!!
All of Treasures MD releases went completely under my radar. Not played any of their releases. All of them demand a high price also, they do look really good though!!
Might have to settle for WarioWorld on the gamecube as that looks pretty decent too!!
Thanks, Craig! Wish I could do these more often but they're very time-consuming. Never played any of them??? Ah man, I'd def recommend Astro Boy on the GBA as I know you like your Nintendo handhelds.
You can always save for them. When I want an expensive game, I'll take a little out of each check till I have enough. I don't get many new, triple A stuff anymore, so I just save for the special , classics I really want. Its better to have 10 games you really love and will play again and again, then have a bunch of games just collecting dust on your shelf. Almost forgot. Another thing you can do is get the most recent Sega Genesis Collection on any of the consoles. They'res a bunch of Treasure games on that. That way you can at least have their games in some physical form.
Treasure, una gran compañia , todos los juegos que jugue de esta compañia me parecen juegazos sobre todo en megadrive, buen video 😀😀
¡Gracias!
LOVED GUARDIAN HEROS!! Played it so much for 3 years! You didn't mention the fight mode though
Yeah, great game! Ah, you're right, I didn't.
I love their stuff, probably one of my favorite dev company. I am pretty sure that HAL lab got inspired by them for their more modern Kirby games.
Quite possibly!
Great video. I really enjoyed it.
Thank you! Glad you liked it.
That was really good Pete.
Thoroughly enjoyed it 👍🏻
Thanks, Marcus. Glad you liked it mate.
Great video Pete. Didn't know of quite a few of these titles especially the gba ones. Lots added to my want list lol. Let's hope they do release some more soon.
Great video mate 😁👍
Thanks, Nath! Yeah, their GBA games are great, especially Astro Boy which is just fantastic. Yes, let's hope so mate.
Great work
Thanks!
I think treasure create best looking game all the time
👌
Treasure are the tits. Dynamite Headdy is a favourite of mine. To this day I've never beat it, hard as. Top video, just did it one sitting with a brew, decent Sunday evening I'd say.
Wow, one sitting! Hardcore. Thanks, Matt. They are indeed the tits!!!
Really enjoyed this Pete, really well thought out video.
Huge fan of gunstar heroes,
Dynamite headdy is a game I enjoy the more I play, very clever game.
Silhouette mirage looked very interesting, I've never heard of that one.
Loads I haven't played, the Gameboy advance games looked interesting, haven't owned one since they originally came out must pick one up.
Thanks, David, glad you enjoyed it. The GBA games are great, especially Astro Boy. Can't recommend that enough.
On this day 30 years ago
Time flies!
Loved that video Pete lots of goodies for me to look out for here shame that this series are so labour intensive please keep them coming
Thanks, Gav! I'll certainly try as I love doing them, but they just take so damn long. I might just upload less frequently and try to do these more often.
You should totally do videos on developers such as Nintendo RD&1 and EAD
Lots more I'd like to cover, but it's hard finding the time as these take ages.
I loveeee treasure 😭
Same! 😢
Welp... I just did several Xbox live downloads for my Xbox One X LOL
Great video!
Hahaha brilliant. Thank you!
What I loved about guardian heroes every single character in the game was playable all you need to do was defeat so called enemy or boss and they would appear in the arange mode where u could set up a custom match 😊
Yeah, that's a great feature.
Light Crusader is exactly how The Witcher would look like if it was a Genesis game
Hahaha true!
Nintendo should really let them make Sin and Punishment III. Actually i'd like to see Treasure take on a Sonic game or team up with Retro Studios somehow for Metroid. In fact, I don't know why Nintendo or any other big gaming company doesn't let them take on their franchises
I'd like to see Treasure do ANYTHING!
Sonic the Hedgehog didn't push the Geneis to its limits, Gunstar heroes did.
Absolutely!
40:25 this is what I'm here for. Give me a remake plz!! :D
Yes!!!
Bangai-O spirits is pretty amazing though..........but a remake would be amazing or even a figure of the mech lol
I still really wish that gun beat got a release 😔
:(
Thank you for this. I'm going to start studying Treasures. I'm playing Ikaruga again and I always play Gradius V often. I'm a game developer and I have a game like this I'm working on. I would like to find a guide on their process. Like how they do the controls, map grids, how they time enemies to come on the screen etc.
Thanks, glad you found it interesting :)
@onaretrotip yeah I wondered why Wario felt so different, and even tho had nintendo on it, it didn't feel like a Nintendo game. This was back in the day when I understood little about a different developers techniques and feel.
If you left on dragon drive is also developed by treasure released on gamecube only in japan. It might be speculated was supposted be a sequel or a successor tl sin and punisher before the real one was made pyor to the wii. As unknown was choosen on bandai branch to make it.
Sorry, if I what Dragon Drive?
@@onaretrotip an japanese anime so they made based on the same name
@@dynamon911nz Yes, I said that in the video.
@@onaretrotip ok i know that. Just thinking on why chosing that instead making own ip
@@dynamon911nz oh, right. No idea.
Gun Star Heroes could've been possible on SNES with an SA1 chip which can boast over 3x the speed of the SNES and more than 2x the speed of the Genesis/Mega-Drive. But I guess Treasure didn't want to resort to that as they thought it would "cheating the hardware XD". But who knows. Some people have already made Sonic the Hedgehog run very well on SNES with no issues and no enhancement chips. So maybe if an enhancement Chip like an SA1 chip is needed, someone could try to make Gun Star Heroes work on SNES one day in the future!
Yeah, who knows. Maybe it was cost prohibitive?
@@onaretrotip Yeah that's very true. Not to mention the SVP Chip was a very expensive product when it was being made for Virtua Racing on Genesis(or Mega-Drive in your case as well as the rest of the world due to another company in the U.S. having already trade marked that name before Sega came along). Thanks for your reply. As you guys say, Cheers. From across the pond.

👍
damn your INTRO fucking rocks sir!
LOL Thanks. I do a different intro each video.
I swear the game Silver for PC and Dreamcast was a sequel to light crusader but Treasure weren't involved. Did I just make that up?

Great vid Pete, shame the company seems to have been wrapped up.
Thanks, Scott! Yeah, a real shame mate.
You know there's one question that popped into mind a few times. Why hasn't there been ateast one employee who has left Nintendo and started their own company. And I don't mean like from second party or third party developers. But like R&D1 or R&D4(EAD).
Has nobody ever done that?
Well, former Star Fox Artist and now retired nintendo employee Takaya Imamura is currently working on a new video game based on a manga he made called Omega-6. Although he's just working with a company he decided to team up with instead of actually being the guy who started and runs it. The company is named Happy Meal.
Am I the only one that skipped right to dynamite headdy? 💀
Hopefully 😂

How to pronounce Ikaruga long I or short i
