Loom is an underrated masterpiece. I've never played another adventure game like it, the lore and story were fantastic and seemed very original, the music was beautiful. It's sad it doesn't get more love, and the lore had potential for a whole universe, though the mechanics seem a bit tricky to sustain for sequels. The rest are fairly recognized classics as we all know. I think both Loom and The Dig deserve a remaster with prettier graphics and tuned-up mechanics like other classics had. It's amazing you basically predicted Star Wars Squadrons (a fantastic game, specially in VR, as you well imagined) and Return to Monkey Island.
the secret of monkey island was the first pc game i played at school in the late 80's, before most people could afford a pc, i was blown away by how good it was, it started me playing every point and click adventure i could find which is still one of my favourite game genres to this day im just disappointed it went out of fashion with the rise of first person shooters, although it has seen a bit of a comeback in recent years but nothing to what it used to be, we need more adventure games in my opinion
It was probably slightly later than the late 80s, as Monkey Island came out in 1990. Sounds great though, playing that at school! Yes, I wish there were more adventure games too, but I think there are more in recent years than there were in the noughties.
The story of LucasArts is basically the story of my early years as a PC gamer. When I moved over from the CPC to the PC in 1992, LucasArts soon became my go-to developer. My fondest memories of gaming prior to heading off to university are Secret of Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, and Sam and Max; all of which I worked with my younger sister to complete as a team. Then there was X-Wing and TIE Fighter, which my friends and I played for years non-stop, before I discovered Elite and that dominated my life thereafter. So many memories. Thanks for reminding me. :)
Me too! The LucasArts games on Amiga, and then in the early 90s on PC, are among my all-time favourites. The Monkey Islands I loved on Amiga and played through many times, and then again on PC, and absolutely loved DOTT and Sam & Max. X-Wing and TIE Fighter were absolutely mind-blowing at the time. I can't believe they haven't resurrected that series as it would go down a storm. I still play through DOTT and the first two Monkey games fairly often; they're still funny and enjoyable, and remind me of those good times. Thanks! Glad it stirred up some fond memories.
The only games I played were Grim Fandango and The Curse of Monkey Island, the level of writing and comedy were absolute superb, yet another company that disappears but their legacy lives on forever.
Ah, I can't recommend the first two Monkey Island games enough if you haven't played them. So much better than the subsequent games in the series, and two of my most beloved games. Thanks for watching!
Contrary to onaretrotip here, I'd actually suggest you continue your introduction to LucasArts adventures with Day of the Tentacle and Sam N' Max: Hit the Road first. They're both zany fun with superb writing, and I think DotT is an overlooked masterpiece -- possibly tied with Grim Fandango as LA's best adventure. They hook you a bit faster than the original MI series, which is easier to get into if you have a bit of nostalgia for your original playthroughs as an old school adventurer (I'm 37).
i loved lucas arts.. for a few years in the early 90s I had an uncle and aunt that worked for them in the Bay Area, CA.. I was a little kid and honestly don't remember a ton but I do specifically remember them giving me all those adventure games over the years. The Indiana Jones one, full throttle and sam and max were my favorites :)
A good summary, thanks for putting this together. I remember these games fondly - in about 1995 or 1996 I got a CD pack at Costco with Day of the Tentacle, Fate of Atlantis, Sam & Max, and Full Throttle.
Excellent retrospective Pete.I got my first PC in the early 90's and every Lucasarts game became an instabuy for me. EVERY game was amazing in the 90's. I was a huge flight sim buff and loved the WW2 action flight sims by Larry Holland. Secrets weapons of the Lufwaffe was superb and then Larry developed the classic X Wing series. I also loved Outlaws, a cool western themed fps that had an excellent single player game but also a robust multiplayer game. I played Outlaws deathmatch for months after. Thanks a lot for making this Pete, it gave loads of great memories!
Thanks so much Ian, really glad you enjoyed it and that it brought back some good memories. The X-Wing series was amazing, being a VR buff I'm sure you'll agree with me that it's an ideal match for the platform. Not played Outlaws, I'll have to give that a try.
Really appreciated this video! Super well done. The Monkey Island games are the dearest to me - Curse was my first one when I was 8 years old, and later the original two.
Thank you very much Daniel, so glad you enjoyed it! I was a similar age, 9, when the first Monkey Island game came out. The first two I'm most fond of, and to this day remain among my all-time favourites.
Your videos are amazing! So much work must go into them so thanks a lot mate. Loads of happy memories come flooding back. And memories of intense frustration - playing Day Of The Tentacle as a kid I had no idea that if wine ages 200 years it might turn to vinegar. That was a well hard puzzle!
Thank you so much David, kind words indeed. Yeah, they do take a lot of time to produce, which can be hard when working full-time. Ha, I remember that particular puzzle being very tricky too, but is also a great example of how having the three different eras made for some very well-designed and interesting puzzles. Glad it brought back some fond memories!
LucasArts was on such a tear throughout the 1990s. I remember coming down with an eye infection shortly after borrowing Tie Fighter and Rebel Assault and playing them with sunglasses on, just because I wanted to complete them before having to return them. There were a few companies back then whose games I could buy without reading reviews and be absolutely thrilled nine times out of 10. It's like they couldn't miss. For a company to put out one or two would be something, but they have an entire line of classics. I love their collections, too, with the boxes in the form of half-buried treasure chests. Those were the games I would break out to show off PC gaming to friends who only wanted to sit on the Genesis or SNES.
They certainly were, it's like they couldn't put a foot wrong back then. Hahaha, what a great memory, funny how we remember the games we played during times of injury or trauma. Like you say, it was unusual for a developer to have such a string of belters. Yeah, the collections were great, they fetch a pretty penny nowadays!
Great job, but im surprised their seminal games on Sega 32X, N64 and especially Gamecube were omitted, Rogue Leader is generally considered one of LucasArts best games they ever made. Learned many new games by them i wasnt aware of for pc's, thanks ill be looking for some of those like Monkey Island and Indiana Jones.
Thanks! Yeah, skimmed over quite a few of their games purely because these videos just took far too long to make. I'm not aware of any LucasArts developed 32X games though.
@@Nativesurvival Well, in your defence it did have the LucasArts logo on the box. But I think maybe they just assisted somehow, or it was because they owned the licence.
Lucasarts: *revolutionizes video games again and again, invents a genre, invents cutscenes, creates countless unique classics* Disney: eww what’s this gross thing on my Lucasfilm acquisition get it out throw it away burn it *gives Star Wars to satan himself*
Also, Fate of Atlantis not only had 3 different ways to play it, but 3 different endings........1) Indy plays alone, and wins 2) Indy coop with Sophia, but Sophia DIES 3) Indy coop with Sophia, she survives (this last two depend on if you manage to take her necklace from her and throw it into the lava (but if you leave her in the cell, the ending is the same as if you didn't took her necklace, she also dies).
Great stuff Pete. Lots of memories here for me too. And games I've not played but should have. Good to hear full throttle getting a remake as I've never played it and will now get the chance.
Thanks John! Thought this video would be up your street, glad it stirred some fond memories. I'm looking forward to the Full Throttle remaster as it's one I didn't play anywhere near as much as the others back in the day.
Loved Lucas Art Pete! There were a few titles I briefly played on a friends Dads PC back in 94 but I absolutely loved Rouge squadron titles on the N64 and GameCube. Episode racer was a favourite too :) so many hours got rinsed in that game lol! Fantastic vid bro!
Glad to hear you loved them too, Luke! Yeah, they had so may great games that I didn't mention, loads after 2000 (particularly Star Wars games). Episode One Racer was decent actually, yeah, enjoyed that. Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed it.
Very entertaining the video. You have forgotten in this chronological development to mention the three games on simulators of the Second World War, Battlehawks, The Finest Hours and Secrets Weapons of the Luftwafe. A greeting.
Really enjoying your Developer Spotlight series. I use them as a reference. It would be cool if you listed the games covered in the description for quick reference. This is a weird one but I would love to see Novotrade / Apaloosa covered. A great Hungarian third party Sega supporter.
Thanks, glad you like them. I've been working on a couple for ages now (literally years), but realistically they just take too long for me to keep doing them. Hopefully one day I'll finish the ones I'm working on.
even though i was born in 2002 the first three monkey islands were among the first games i ever played and are some of my favorites to this day, especially 1 and 2. I guess i was young enough that i could look past the old graphics and enjoy it the same way a kid in the 90s would have. I also played a bit of Day of the Tentacle back then but never got very far through the game. I got the remaster a few days ago however, played it through and loved it.
That's awesome to hear. At that age things like that don't matter to us, so we can enjoy games that have solid and enjoyable gameplay without worrying about graphics, etc. Glad you finally got to enjoy DOTT; that's one of my all-time favourite games. When the remaster came out I completed it twice in two days haha. I thought that they did a superb job with it.
15:51 X-Wing also had the ability to use 3rd party editing programs to make your own missions and ships, with its limits. This meant that if you were on GoCity you could trade endless missions with he same basic game. It also helped you fix bugs that crept up during the original gameplay. Bugs that were slow to be fixed by LucasArts online services.
I have Grim Fandango on my steam account and really need to play it, and Monkey Islands games very good. Dark Forces is a class Star Wars game 3d shooter, and I have all the other Jedi knight games too, just brilliant. I've only discovered Zombies ate my neighbours a couple of year ago on the Mega Drive, and it's so much fun to play, sure I've reviewed it too lol, an excellent look back on Lucas Arts buddy, they certainly did some classic games, liked and subbed👍🏻
Thanks! Yeah, they made some really amazing games. The Star Wars games of that era (X-Wing series, Dark Forces) were just astounding, and even drew from (and built upon) the Star Wars extended universe. Zombies is a really fun little game. Thanks for subscribing. Welcome!
Loving this new series buddy, some really interesting points.. Click and point so many good memories with many awesome games, broken sword always comes to mind with point and click games for me. Never played day of the tentacle looks a nifty game. Great one pete another well put together vid, loved it.
Thanks Ben, glad you enjoyed it. Hopefully this will become a recurring series. Yeah, I have such fond memories of the genre too, Broken Sword is another great one. Definitely play DOTT if you get the chance!
Thanks a lot, Clayton! Glad you enjoyed this style of video, I really enjoyed making it, and this "developer spotlight" series will most likely continue.
A fantastic insight into the company Lots of point and click games which are not my favourite genre, maybe it was because I had a mouse that was always full up with hair and never worked properly lol . Loved super Star Wars Fantastic vid Pete 😎👍
I truly whole heartedly love these videos! utterly superb! I think it would be nice to add examples of key points you mention during the videos tho I.e sound tracks/voice segments/graphical differences ect ect
Thanks (I think) Steve. Matt SoulFunk was talking about Kim Justice the other week, but yet to watch any of her videos. Documentary type stuff isn't it?
+AdiSneakerFreak Just watched a Kim Justice video. Wow, her stuff is incredible! I'll take being compared to her as a compliment. I'd love to be able to do stuff like that.
I wish the Lucasarts book had been more focused to these games that you bring up and less about the latter generic ones! Curse was imo so good that it made up for the fact that it was so different. Great design and gags, and superlush art that just sucks you in. But it is indeed separate from the first two. The first two were wacky at times but also had quite the dark undertone, with more realistic touches. As a kid some bits were actually eerie, gory and a little scary. It wasnt the same without that aspect. (That was also a thing in a lot of "kids" stuff from the 80s and early 90s and hasnt quite made a comeback yet?) Never played the 3D ones...but will give Gilberts new one a go one of these days.
Those early Lucasfilm games like Ballblazer, Rescue on Fractalus, Koronis Rift and The Eidolon were fantastic and some of my very favourite 8-bit video games.
monkey island was my first ever game I played and monkey island 2 was my first computer game I played and monkey island 2 is my favorite game of all time
LucasArts functioned much like the sitcom “the office” I worked for Lucas for over 20 years. The original titles you mention here were awesome. The Star Wars games developed in-house basically sucked and Lucas needed to hire better developers such as Bioware and Dice. I myself was never allowed to speak with bioware directly and needed to go through the “scum” in-charge at LucasArts/ LucasFilm :) Disney is now releasing music I created 20 years ago. You can hear it on Spotify/Apple etc . But feel free to pirate it because I’m apparently “not allowed” to collect royalties.
A pedantic correction, but mouselook wasn't an innovation of LucasArts and Dark Forces (although that's one of my favourite games of all time!) - the first game with mouselook (which some reviewers criticised as being too complicated...) was the Mac-only Marathon by Bungie.
Thnaks Steve! Glad you liked it. Oh, the point & click games back then were just fantastic, but I'd recommend trying the remasters of Monkey Island or Day of the Tentacle (if you haven't already) to get a taste of the genre.
That was awesome! Edit and upload time payed off! Aw man, that intro! Monkey Island is my absolute favourite but I discovered it through playing the Curse Of MI first then went back to try the first two. Loved them all but Escape wasn't on par for me. I'd love to see a 3rd traditional sequel by Ron Gilbert though. Grim Fandango was good fun. Played the remake last year. Sam & Max by Telltale is awesome but I've yet to try the original. Still need to play the Indianna Jones series as well as Full Throttle, Dig, Zak and some Star Wars ones. That Star Wars/Doom one (forgot the name) looks awesome! Currently playing the new Doom now. Need more Monkey Island in my life though. Awesome vid Pete, nice trip down memory lane! But have I ever told you...you fight like a dairy farmer...
How appropriate, you fight like a cow! Thanks Mat, glad the video brought back some fond memories. The first two Monkeys are my favourites, as you know. Oh, def go and play the original Sam & Max, it's brilliant! Shocked that you've never played Dark Forces, I'd recommend playing that for sure (not on console, play it on Steam or DOSBox). Great game!
Good video Pete. My favourite LucasArts games have always been: - Dark Forces - The Curse of Monkey Island - Rebel Assault II A shame you didn't include RA II and Jedi Knight as those were great. I found Telltale's handling of Sam & Max and Monkey Island quite mediocre really. LucasArts on the other hand were a great company.
Rescue on fractalus! That’s what it’s called! I remember having nightmares after playing this when I was about 5 when an alien suddenly appeared! I literally could t handle it and it burnt onto my subconscious for years afterwards. Thank you for finally letting me find the title. Now to search for a walkthrough vid so I can put the demons to bed. It can’t have been that scary?
I played and enjoyed lot's of LucasArts games growing up, starting with the Amiga! I borrowed The Secret Of Monkey Island from my cousin and LOVED it! I got the sequel for Christmas not long after (must have been 1993 or something like that). Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was brill... I didn't finish it though because when I was on the blimp I used to get my ass whooped!! I still need to go back and finish that! And when I'm done with that I'll start on the sequel! I always saw the older games in the games shops, still asking a decent price even years later after release (Such as Zak Mckracken and Maniac Mansion) but never got them. I carried on with my love for LucasArt when I got a PC 1996 with titles like Rebel Assault and Sam N Max... I played Full Throttle on my friend Mac and LOVED it. Somewhere along the line I played and loved Day of the Tentacle, but when I borrowed and played Grim Fandango from a friend I couldn't get into it (Possibly the new 3d style graphics that was forced upon us at the time). Later I played and completed Curse of Monkey Island - It was still great and really really enjoyed it... The same couldn't be said for Escape from Monkey Island though... I've played Episode 1 of Tales of Monkey Island and love it... Not played the new Sam and Max though... Will fix all in good time.
Glad to hear that you have a similar love for their games, Tom. I was the same, my love affair started on the Amiga with the first Monkey Island game, and it snowballed from there. Sam & Max and Day of the Tentacle I absolutely loved on PC, but DOTT is up there with my all-time favourite games. Still play it quite often, as well as the first two Monkey games. I didn't get on as well with Escape from MI or Grim Fandango as well either, like you say I think it was the 3D. Tales of MI is great, def check out the new Sam & Max games as they're brilliant too.
I had seen earlier Lucasfilm Games, but wasn't interested in "monkeying around." "Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis" was one of a seet of games at an Indie computer store's "Game Room." (They were stored/played on a Magneto Optical disk system, which was fascinating in itself.) Too bad George Lucas didn't make that LucasArts game into "Indy 4" while Harrison Ford was young enough to realistically "duke it out with 'Klaus Kerner." "Their Finest Hour: The Battle of Britain" and "Battlehawks 1942" were (sorta) OK combat flight simulators, but the "X-Wing/TIE Fighter" games were the first serious competition for Origin's "Wing Commander" series. I briefly played "Sam and Max Hit The Road," but left for "Wing Commander II/III," instead. I looked at "Full Throttle," but since I wasn't a Biker, I passed on it until I found the compelling UA-cam play through. LucasArts owned me completely with "The Dig," since it was the characters were "much smarter than 'Roger Wilco." I tried out "Grim Fandango," but real world computer work made me set it aside until I ran into the delightful UA-cam play through. Real world changes took me out of the PC/video game world until I upgraded to broadband Internet access, and things have been interesting. ("Wing Commander: Privateer," "IL2 Sturmovik," "Subnautica," and Killmonday games.;)
Loved Tie Fighter back in the day. I never ended up playing X-Wing VS Tie Fighter because of its initially multiplayer only focus. And no love for Grim Fandango? You mention it, but express no affection for it. Easily my favorite adventure game of all time. The style, humor, compelling story, music, everything about it was top notch. I picked up the remaster and the game is as good as ever. I enjoyed Dark Forces back in the day, but the series really got better in Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight. I especially loved Jedi Knight 2 and Jedi Academy.
Ah, you noticed that did you... Grim Fandango I have no nostalgia for as I never played it on release, only much later. I moved out of home not long after its release and didn't play PC games for years, but have enjoyed it in recent years. The remaster is great!
Ah, that explains it. I'm really glad for the remasters, as these games deserve to keep finding new and old audiences alike. I have the Day of the Tentacle remaster and waiting for the right time to pick up the Monkey Island 1/2 remasters. Also, the commentary in Grim was very cool and insightful into the development.
Some corrections; Indiana Jones and Las Crusade was actually the first game with multiple ways to finish (in particular during and after the castle........there you can use several approaches to pass that part, going full punch and fight, or "trick" the guards with disguises and talking, with the famouse TROPHY DRINK to defeat muscles with only 1 punch).......but after the castle basically you have 3 ways to finish the game: ZEPPELIN (you get into it, and actually complete the travel by beating guards until it arrives the destination)........the airplane (also, you can travel most of the distance)........and via motorbike.........also, you can either punch the guards all around, convince them to let you pass by talking out, or showing them Hitler's autograph to let you pass........
@@onaretrotip I think you said Fate of Atlantis was the first one with multiple paths to finish it....the first one was Last Crusade (I think actually the Indiana Jones going alone and with Sophia was more of a "easy-hard" mode, similar to Monkey Island 2's two game modes...thou they have enough different paths to consider they wanted multiple endings and increase a lot more the playability (for example, to get the sun disc, Indy going alone can just talk the guy out to give it to him, while with Sophia you have to get the mask and disguise as a ghost....I don't remember how the car chase was trigged thou).
@@onaretrotip yes, you didn't say directly "it is the first", you mention this features decribing the game, but they were all present in the Last Crusade, so is not a characteristic of Fate, but both Indiana Jones adventure games (and specifically, as I mention, you have a "fist fight" way of walkthrough, and a "talk to..." way of walkthrough, or a "puzzle and gizmo" walkthrough, all starting from the Castle part (I don't recall if there are different walkthroughs on the first half of the game.....thou I recall you have certain objects at Indy's father's house that if you don't pick, the game results a bit different also, like opening a lamp desk, or pushing a library down...really can't recall exactly).
Definitely one of the greatest developers of the 90s! Hope you enjoy it, let me know what you think. This may become a new series, but not frequent as it took about 30 hours.
+onaretrotip quite well fone. I've played a lot of the star wars games... Dark forces was my first dos game and a part of myself died when Disney commited such a crime...
Thanks! Dark Forces was massive back in the day, such a big deal to play a first person shooter in the Star Wars universe. Great story too. Yeah, Disney have committed heresy there!
sidenote: if we're being literal, it wasn't "Last Crusade" that introduced more than one ending. but, amazingly, "Maniac Mansion" already did that as well (while I like other (LF/LA) games more than the latter, it's astonishing just how many things they creators put in on what was essentially their first big attempt).
Highly recommended, especially if you like Westerns. Getting it to run correctly on modern systems can be a major challenge, though. See here for tools to help with that: www.rpgcodex.net/forums/index.php?threads/unofficial-patches-for-thief-and-other-pc-games.90431/page-4#post-3474461
Yes Outlaws is an amazing game and we still have many people who play it, we have this youtube channel dedicated to gameplay vids and montages. We also have a Facebook group with 400+ people for Outlaws. The soundtrack is one of the greatest I've ever heard, top notch game (I started playing it the year it was released - 1997, and still play today). Check out the youtube channel if you're interested!
@@onaretrotip I just hope it comes out someday. I would love to watch it. I always love your channel and find them very informative. Maybe you can someday make cancelled PC adventure games?
I love monkey island! Also I feel like im the only one to like rebel assult on sega cd. I first played the sequel on ps1 which I loved and then this one. I really love them.
Hey pete it was good catching up with you again today mate, had a good day and im quite proud of the fact that i only spent £33 lol Well pete once again you deliver a very proffesional and informative developer spotlight video, you are the master at these imo, may i request a developer to showcase and put under the spotlight ? my choice ? well it has got to be the masters, SEGA AM2 !!! Peace brother :)
Yeah good to see you too Dal! I spent £3 pmsl. Thanks, glad you liked the video mate. I will definitely continue this "developer spotlight" series when I can, AM2 would be a great one! ;)
also, "Day of the Tentacle" was literally the reason for me to convince my parents that I needed a DOS-PC, although obviously I didn't use that argument with them (at that point I was an Amiga user).
I omitted quite a few games actually, which I tend to do with this series. Otherwise the videos end up being really long and just take too much time to produce (they take about 40 hours as it is).
Ignacio Manzolillo Ah, I see. They were released much later though, and the video only covers up to the end of the 90s/early 2000s. They released many games after that.
i feel like Lucas Arts kinda turned to shit internally during the 2000s, i liked the X-Wing Alliance most out of the X-Wing series and the Jedi Knight games were great, but wernt they out sourced? also, wasnt the X-Wing games made by Totally Games?
imho "The Secret of Monkey Island" and its sequel is the best duo of games ever released on a computer. really the only downside those had was spoiling us for other games. like, while I enjoyed other games (and click-and-point adventures in particular), it made it basically impossible to live up to it (because to my friends and myself, those weren't just two incredibly well designed games, but also amazing and immersive stories with so much wit and humour).
Me too, Peter! I thought that Double Fine did a cracking job remastering it, and Day of the Tentacle. Looking forward to their Full Throttle remaster. I'm pretty much a fan of anything that Tim Schafer's involved in.
What about Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine, Outlaws, Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II (+MofS expansion). In my opinion all of these games were at least good. I remember the total immersion that they gave me. Perhaps some of them were technologically inferior in comparison to games that other companies published at that time but my impression is that LucasArts (Maniac Mansion-SCUMM, Dark Forces-vertical looking could be some exception) was almost never trying that much to be on the edge of 3D engine development or something. It's like they were always focused on telling stories perhaps this is why they created mostly adventure games which really do not require cutting edge solutions. I was truly saddened when they stopped making adventures because to me this studio was always a mark of high quality games in this genre. I guess most gamers when they could (hardware got strong enough) started to be more appealed to 3D games in which graphics can really shine event when the plot is pretty basic. Thanks for the memorial episode!
Yeah, some great games I left out admittedly. These videos take me so long to produce that sometimes I have to leave thing out sadly. I miss them too, and totally agree about them valuing the story very highly. A trait that I still covet among video games and developers. Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it!
Funnily enough I never realised I lisped until I was about 34 when I started making videos. It's much worse when I do the voice overs and is hardly noticeable in person. Anyway, not much point in commenting on something that a person can't do anything about like a dick.
Yeah, that's crazy in hindsight!

@@onaretrotip Yea they made Star Wars 32x, one of their best in my opinion its great. Thanks
@@Nativesurvival Hmm. Pretty sure Sega developed that.
@@onaretrotip Wow i dont know how ive had that mixed up all these years...you've shaken my foundation of childhood LOL
@@Nativesurvival Well, in your defence it did have the LucasArts logo on the box. But I think maybe they just assisted somehow, or it was because they owned the licence.
Lucasarts: *revolutionizes video games again and again, invents a genre, invents cutscenes, creates countless unique classics*
Disney: eww what’s this gross thing on my Lucasfilm acquisition get it out throw it away burn it *gives Star Wars to satan himself*
So infuriating.
is Satan EA?
Also, Fate of Atlantis not only had 3 different ways to play it, but 3 different endings........1) Indy plays alone, and wins 2) Indy coop with Sophia, but Sophia DIES 3) Indy coop with Sophia, she survives (this last two depend on if you manage to take her necklace from her and throw it into the lava (but if you leave her in the cell, the ending is the same as if you didn't took her necklace, she also dies).
Nice :)
really liked this vid. A tour through my childhood
Thanks, Alex! Glad you enjoyed it. This is my childhood through and through as well.
A greeting.
Hi Federico! Glad you enjoyed the video. The reason that those games don't get mentioned is that they weren't developed by LucasArts.
Iam so lucky, my childhood was in the golden age of quest's. Lucas and Sierra - are the best 💙
Me too. Good times indeed :)
even though i was born in 2002 the first three monkey islands were among the first games i ever played and are some of my favorites to this day, especially 1 and 2.
Wow, that's awesome! That would've been way beyond my knowledge as a 12/13 year old.
Sad Jedi Knight wasn't included! Loved TIE Fighter and the whole series.
Ah, sorry man. I had to be somewhat selective otherwise the video would have taken forever.
Tie Fighter is the best game i have ever played in my 30+ years of gaming. Thank you Lucasarts.
It's so good, it just amazed me back in the day. So much fun, and a really well-designed game, then added Star Wars! What's not to love? ;)
Very interesting and a great effort Pete. Would definitely like to see some more of these documentary style vids... keep up the great work!
Thanks a lot, Clayton! Glad you enjoyed this style of video, I really enjoyed making it, and this "developer spotlight" series will most likely continue.
A fantastic insight into the company
Lots of point and click games which are not my favourite genre, maybe it was because I had a mouse that was always full up with hair and never worked properly lol .
Loved super Star Wars
Fantastic vid Pete 😎👍
Thanks Alex! Hahaha, yeah maybe that's why. I absolutely loved point & click games back then, no other genre had such a good sense of humour.
I truly whole heartedly love these videos! utterly superb! I think it would be nice to add examples of key points you mention during the videos tho I.e sound tracks/voice segments/graphical differences ect ect
Wow, thanks a lot, Joe. Really appreciate that. Thanks for the advice, good idea!
onaretrotip can't wait for the next one what about doing one for accolade or apogee games?
I have a couple in the works, and they take me ages, but good suggestions!
onaretrotip I can only imagine mate! I'll sit waiting patiently lol
Hahaha cheers.
Oh nice Pete, like the new 'Kim Justice' channel direction pal 👍👍👍
Thanks (I think) Steve. Matt SoulFunk was talking about Kim Justice the other week, but yet to watch any of her videos. Documentary type stuff isn't it?
+onaretrotip it's exceptional stuff mate get on some of the rise and fall series
AdiSneakerFreak Will do!
+AdiSneakerFreak Just watched a Kim Justice video. Wow, her stuff is incredible! I'll take being compared to her as a compliment. I'd love to be able to do stuff like that.
+onaretrotip 😀 yer really top stuff eh mate 👍👍
Yes, the earlier days at LucasArts, particularly the early '90s, were just magical.
Trip down memory lane indeed 👍🏼
:)
Those early Lucasfilm games like Ballblazer, Rescue on Fractalus, Koronis Rift and The Eidolon were fantastic and some of my very favourite 8-bit video games.
Nice! They were a bit before my time, I only remember playing Rescue on Fractalus.
Did you know that Ron Gilbert of Monkey Island fame cut his videogame developing teeth on 'Rescue on Fractalus.'
I didn't! Great fact, thanks.
monkey island was my first ever game I played and monkey island 2 was my first computer game I played and monkey island 2 is my favorite game of all time
LucasArts functioned much like the sitcom “the office” I worked for Lucas for over 20 years.
Man, that sucks!
A pedantic correction, but mouselook wasn't an innovation of LucasArts and Dark Forces (although that's one of my favourite games of all time!) - the first game with mouselook (which some reviewers criticised as being too complicated...) was the Mac-only Marathon by Bungie.
Ah, thanks for the info!
absolute awesome vid Pete buddy. really informative. wish I had got into point and click back in the day
Thnaks Steve!
Great game!
+onaretrotip I shall add it to my ever growing list!
For me personally, LucasArts made the best games ever
100%!
Good video Pete. My favourite LucasArts games have always been:
- Dark Forces
- The Curse of Monkey Island
- Rebel Assault II
A shame you didn't include RA II and Jedi Knight as those were great. I found Telltale's handling of Sam & Max and Monkey Island quite mediocre really. LucasArts on the other hand were a great company.
Thanks! My favourites would have to be Dark Forces, TIE Fighter, Monkey Island/Monkey II, and DOTT.
@@onaretrotip Great games. Dark Forces must be my third favourite game of all time period.
Haha brilliant. Glad I could remind you!
Another killer vid man! Cheers x
Thank you!
@@onaretrotip just out of interest do you venture into 90s/late 90s games?? Points and clicks n the Like??
A A What do you mean? Are you asking if I play them?
@@onaretrotip ye bud, we spoke about dungeon keeper before.. do you play anything from that era onward or just stick to the older gens?
I play all sorts to be honest. Older and newer stuff.
I had seen earlier Lucasfilm Games, but wasn't interested in "monkeying around." "Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis" was one of a seet of games at an Indie computer store's "Game Room." (They were stored/played on a Magneto Optical disk system, which was fascinating in itself.) Too bad George Lucas didn't make that LucasArts game into "Indy 4" while Harrison Ford was young enough to realistically "duke it out with 'Klaus Kerner."
"Their Finest Hour: The Battle of Britain" and "Battlehawks 1942" were (sorta) OK combat flight simulators, but the "X-Wing/TIE Fighter" games were the first serious competition for Origin's "Wing Commander" series.
I briefly played "Sam and Max Hit The Road," but left for "Wing Commander II/III," instead.
I looked at "Full Throttle," but since I wasn't a Biker, I passed on it until I found the compelling UA-cam play through.
LucasArts owned me completely with "The Dig," since it was the characters were "much smarter than 'Roger Wilco."
I tried out "Grim Fandango," but real world computer work made me set it aside until I ran into the delightful UA-cam play through.
Real world changes took me out of the PC/video game world until I upgraded to broadband Internet access, and things have been interesting. ("Wing Commander: Privateer," "IL2 Sturmovik," "Subnautica," and Killmonday games.;)
Ah, shame you weren't into Monkey Island as it's definitely one of their finest. What about Day of the Tentacle? Love that game so much.
Great stuff. The third best company ever (after Maxis and Sierra) 😉
They are sorely missed.
They should really re-make Escape from Monkey Island, in point and click version......3D version is really totally NOT-Monkey Island
Yeah I wasn't a fan of that style at all.
I thought they did a great job on the Monkey remasters. Very good.
I'm confused by this comment. Did I say otherwise?
@@nicolashrv I just had to watch that section as this is four years old, so I can't remember what I said! But no, I did not say that.
@@onaretrotip yes, you didn't say directly "it is the first", you mention this features decribing the game, but they were all present in the Last Crusade, so is not a characteristic of Fate, but both Indiana Jones adventure games (and specifically, as I mention, you have a "fist fight" way of walkthrough, and a "talk to..." way of walkthrough, or a "puzzle and gizmo" walkthrough, all starting from the Castle part (I don't recall if there are different walkthroughs on the first half of the game.....thou I recall you have certain objects at Indy's father's house that if you don't pick, the game results a bit different also, like opening a lamp desk, or pushing a library down...really can't recall exactly).
belter that Pete, Indy last crusade is my fav, I still have the amiga version with the grail replica
Thanks Stu! Niiiiice. I have a few big box Amiga games still, nothing beats the big box PC and Amiga games for box art.
one of the best! watching right now
Definitely one of the greatest developers of the 90s!
Most people think about star wars when they hear about LucasArts. I Always think about maniac masion when i hear the name.
sidenote: if we're being literal, it wasn't "Last Crusade" that introduced more than one ending. but, amazingly, "Maniac Mansion" already did that as well (while I like other (LF/LA) games more than the latter, it's astonishing just how many things they creators put in on what was essentially their first big attempt).
Definitely.
I had the pre prediction version of rescue on fractalus which was called behind jaggi lines pirated on my Atari 800
Nice!
Have you heard of the game called "countdown"? It was released in 1990. That was a great game back in the day
No, never heard of that!
Did you guys not get Outlaws over the pond? Fantastic Western FPS with great story, music and animation.
We did indeed. I've never played it but it looks awesome, I'm going to get it at some point. In hindsight I should've included it.
I will try out the Sam and Max game.
It's awesome. If you like your point & click adventure games, it's one of the best in my opinion. Really good sense of humour in it. Hope you like it.
Sam & Max actually have 3 more sequels. Playhouse (shown here), "Season One" and "Beyond Time and Space".
Yup!
Now do Sierra 😂
Haha. I have a couple that I've been working on on-and-off for about two years now, but they just take so long it's very hard to do them.
@@onaretrotip I just hope it comes out someday. I would love to watch it. I always love your channel and find them very informative. Maybe you can someday make cancelled PC adventure games?
@@lutfimakarim8258 Possibly, yes!
I love monkey island! Also I feel like im the only one to like rebel assult on sega cd. I first played the sequel on ps1 which I loved and then this one. I really love them.
I only ever played Rebel Asault briefly back in the day, I was all about the X-Wing series.
U forgot outlaws from 1997. First game to use a sniper rifle scope.
Ooh, didn't know it was the first to use a scope! It wasn't that I forgot it, I just didn't include it. Maybe I should have in hindsight though.
You forgot X-Wing Alliance, one of the best games.
That wasn't developed by LucasArts, hence its exclusion.
I've been playing xwing vs tie fighter thru retroarch
What a game!
Great stuff! I love Zombies but really lacked a battery save option
Thanks Ian! Zombies is brilliant, quite different from their other releases. Indeed, a battery saved would have been a welcome addition.
I will definitely continue this "developer spotlight" series when I can, AM2 would be a great one! ;)
Did you like the new monkey island episodes? I really enjoyed them.
I did indeed, Travis! I think they did really well, and captured the Monkey Island spirit. I'd still love to see a true third game though.
One of my all-time favourite games for sure.
For some reason, I find it superior to Day of the Tentacle.
Full Throttle was awesome
Certainly was! Double Fine have a remaster coming in 2017.
how dare u failed to mention After life....
O_o
No mention of "Indiana Jones and his Desktop Adventures" or even "Yoda's Desktop Adventures"...? Why not I wonder...?
🤷♂️
@@onaretrotip Still, thanks for the awesome video!
@@skRapKlan Thanks! Honestly can't remember why I didn't include those, but often I do omit games as otherwise it would just take too long.
also, "Day of the Tentacle" was literally the reason for me to convince my parents that I needed a DOS-PC, although obviously I didn't use that argument with them (at that point I was an Amiga user).
Hahaha brilliant.
Good video.
Thank you very much!
Big Sky Trooper form SNES??
I omitted quite a few games actually, which I tend to do with this series. Otherwise the videos end up being really long and just take too much time to produce (they take about 40 hours as it is).
you only showed old version of both maniac mansion and monkey island!
What do you mean only the old version?
Ignacio Manzolillo Ah, I see. They were released much later though, and the video only covers up to the end of the 90s/early 2000s. They released many games after that.
Oh no! Someone's ambushing the polecats!! Boo hoo
Haha nice.
i feel like Lucas Arts kinda turned to shit internally during the 2000s, i liked the X-Wing Alliance most out of the X-Wing series and the Jedi Knight games were great, but wernt they out sourced? also, wasnt the X-Wing games made by Totally Games?
I can only agree. Ah, yeah, it was Totally games! Whoops.
Missed Star Wars Racer and Rogue Squardon
I skipped quite a few more I believe.
imho "The Secret of Monkey Island" and its sequel is the best duo of games ever released on a computer.
really the only downside those had was spoiling us for other games. like, while I enjoyed other games (and click-and-point adventures in particular), it made it basically impossible to live up to it (because to my friends and myself, those weren't just two incredibly well designed games, but also amazing and immersive stories with so much wit and humour).
Oh, absolutely. Best games ever!
you forgot X-Wing Alliance in 1999 :(
Had to cut quite a few games sadly, as these just take far too long to make.
I have Grim Fandango on my PS4
Me too, Peter! I thought that Double Fine did a cracking job remastering it, and Day of the Tentacle. Looking forward to their Full Throttle remaster. I'm pretty much a fan of anything that Tim Schafer's involved in.
Star wars pod racers ? :(
😢
31:56 GAAAAAAAHHH!!!!!
😭😭😭
Burnerd? This guy hasn’t played the game in talkie or he wouldn’t pronounce it that way.
Hahaha. I have played the talkie, probably 40 times. Just the perils of reading a script I'm afraid.

Funnily enough I never realised I lisped until I was about 34 when I started making videos. It's much worse when I do the voice overs and is hardly noticeable in person. Anyway, not much point in commenting on something that a person can't do anything about like a dick.
