John, it's awesome that you still use your dad's rake. I love clamming, awesome memories of clamming with my dad down Barnegat Bay. He would always bring a clam knife, lemon and cocktail sauce for when we got back to the dock.
Excellent video John...I can retire at the end of this year and plan on doing a lot of fishing and hunting...I need to head up north and get some lessons from you first...lol
@johnskinner can we please see a night fluke fishing video? I’ve often thought about targeting fluke at night and feel as though It can be very effective.
I sense the Go Fish camera will come in quite handy during fluke season. Only a matter of time before one of these cameras will broadcast real time to your smartphone:) Great video as always!
Hi John: Great video! Wonderful underwater photography, and insights into the specifics of the clam rakes. Try frying some fresh garlic next time, instead of the powder; and use some white wine, and chopped parsley. Then you can serve that broth, too, and enjoy it with some nice crusty bread. Buon Apetito. Ed
I went out and bought a clam rake after your last video. I can only clam in NJ till April 30th I believe, so hopefully I can get out there soon. Been looking at clam maps to figure out where I can clam. NJ doesn't give you many areas that allow recreational clamming though.
where in jersey r u? if u follow John's advice, u can find spots that r not as heavily hit, but he's definitely right about being in driving/walking distance to a spot. the further south u go, the more wildlife refuge/management areas u have. Ur chances increase greatly there.
Fra a Llot I'm in north jersey, and we don't have many spots to clam. I'll probably try the navesink river. I have a kayak, so I have decent access to spots, but because of pollution there are only a handful of spots you're allowed to clam up here from what I noticed.
This video just got me hyped to give this a shot. I spent about 40 minutes looking over NYDEC websites related to shellfishing, and it said between May and September you need to immediately cool the clams when you get them out of the water. I have a few ideas but what is your preferred method of doing this?
Nice video! Great to see you on the water this early. How do you feel about fluke season getting delayed and the limit increase? I wish it were the other way around :)
I'm a little confused - how do you flip the rake over to retrieve the clams without them falling out? Might seem elementary, but here in north Texas we don't get to do much in the way of raking clams.
Not elementary at all. It helps if you're pulling it toward you while you're flipping and pulling up. That way the water pressure keeps some stuff from falling out. I'm still surprised how much stays in the basket, but after you've done it a bunch, you get the hang of it.
You'd laugh at how I cook them. I put them in a pot with maybe only 1/4in of water but I stand them up on their knuckle with their tongue side face up. I put the top on and start bringing the water to a simmer. Eventually the clams open and release their juices which then fills the pot more so they simmer in their own juices. The resulting broth is great to add to spaghetti sauce or to set aside and ladle over the clam. No sauces needed. As you can imagine it's rather salty so you can tone it down a bit it you can't tolerate it. Also believe it or not I use a garden hoe to scrape through the hard mud. I just drag it along a few times so the teeth sink deeper and deeper until I feel that familiar scrap. Then I just dig it up with my hands. It's so effective I can catch my 100 clam limit in around 15 minutes. I'll have to try cooking them in beer. Any suggestion which one works best?
Best beer for steaming? I've heard the dark ones are more interesting. The one I used worked fine. If it was summer I bet I could use your clamming technique where I am. Too cold now though.
great vids !!!!! lets see more Flattie bashing ( flounder/fluke) Flatties are what we call all members of the flatfish family over in northern England ,
Please dont eat any more clams from the sound! The water is loaded with terrible bacteria and chemicals! The odd greenish slimey stuff is very bad, it shows how sick everything there is. PLEASE!!!

Wow! Love steamed clams... Nice video... Keep up the underwater vids... VERY interesting stuff...
This camera looks much better than the water wolf camera you usually film with. Nicer camera for sure! Glad you're back making videos!
Wow John you never cease to impress with the underwater camera videos
Love the video, the new camera, the app and the cooking lessons. You better leave some clams in the water for us. :-)
My top favorite among your videos! Many thanks!
Making it look easy ! Great job and awesome camera hope to see more underwater footage. Tight lines

Really grateful for your UA-cam channel and the info you share. I'm going to pick up one of your books next time i'm at J&H
Great videos! I'm trying to learn to clam and there is almost no information online. These help a lot!
John you’ve done it again. Great video and simple cooking at the end.
Nice video John.... Saw a couple scallops in the mix too underneath there.
Wow that looks so delicious
That camera is real deal I sense some incredible underwater fishing clips in the near future hahah

Hi John! Where is this spot that you're at? Would you mind sharing? Would love to visit with our son in the future! Thanks!
I miss getting clams for my dinner. 😆I need that rake.

John-Dig the clam-cam! Have you been out fishing for bass yet?
Any special ritual you use to get the sand out of the clams?
None with these.

How to you get a clamming permit
How u clean them?

excellent!
Where can I get this tool ;? Anywhere to buy ? I am in long island
I'm not sure about the exact one, but a there's a link to a very similar one in the video's description.
Can you do a fluke cooking video?
Where is the location? Where else can we find places to hunt clam.
wouldn't butter work ?
What did you do to prep the clams before steaming?
Thanks
I scrubbed them a bit, but they really didn't need anything more than a rinse. There was no need to soak them. No sand at all in these.

If you steam them in water you can strain the broth through a paper coffee filter Than added butter garlic. Then put over pasta

I usually have Yeungling on hand so I'll have to try with that first. Sounds like you're referencing a malt beer. Thanks for replying!
Coming soon: John Skinner Cooking Show - love it!
Why are the shells so white?I never pulled up clams that looked like that when I was a clammer !
