That was great. I have a hard enough time catching blackfish in season from a boat and here you are catching out of season, early, from the beach, and you’re catching keepers. Amazing. Ultimate angler.
This is why I highly recommend reading your books. I do the same thing in NC but the crabs will be in the grass and rocks if you can find any rocks. Also oyster beds but beware of oyster beds even with tennis shoes they can go through and cause a nasty cut. You can ask my wife as she got a bad cut doing this one time years ago with shoes on. Great video!
We catch 2 gallons in 30-40 minutes in Cape May, I do bring my son who’s younger and has a good back. Look how many John caught that fast! Free & easy bait quickly! Thanks John great video!
I was laughing my ass off watching this. Catching bait can be as much fun as fishing. Also, I wear gloves when doing this. They do pinch and it hurts lol
We gotta a cottage in Fairhaven Massachusetts, same exact shore line with rocks. Identical, but we have maybe double the Asian crabs. It's madness. I can get a gallon in 20 minutes. That's a lot of crabs. Actually a nice workout
I'm learning so much from these John. I'm a freshwater fisherman (for 40yrs) slowly learning my ways for saltwater and not having much luck of ever finding good livebait or just the shop is way out of my routes, this helps a lot to pick my own bait!
Learning to throw a cast net helped me gather more free bait; mullet, shrimp, mud minnows, glass minnows, small blue crab. Just like fishing, you may have to move to different spots to find the bait, but you will find them.
Took a trip from Charleston South Carolina all the way up the coast as far north in Maine as I could get. Turned around mid October. 30 days give or take. Wonderful trip. Missed a lot of good shoreline though. Not next time. Thanks for your videos John.
John, I remember that video and being amazed by you surf fishing for tog. Wish I had that type of jig when fishing the Chesapeake Bay bridge tunnels years ago. Thanks!
You have some very fertile rock flipping grounds there John. But in more densely populated higher traffic areas it's not quite so loaded and easy. And yes hurting ones back is definitely a large concern! Sometimes getting that bait isn't so easy.
Hey john, have a boat very similiar to yours, do you have a video where you describe the trolling motor and gps/fish finder you use either in the video or in the description, thanks walt
Up in Massachusetts these things are destroying the salt marshes and damaging the fisheries, and when I lived there there were some groups trying to figure out creative ideas for how to deal with them. Over and over "why can't we just eat them and control them that way?" Hang on baby, I'll pick out some claws to make you a crab roll. It'll be ready for our 96th anniversary.
Crab broth with with small pieces potato and carrot, boil till the potato and carrots disolve into the broth... Perfect for someone who is recovering from a injury/illnesses or even worst (a hang over)...👀👌
I deep fry the ones that have just moulted or have leather hard shells. You can eat them whole like chips. They’re delicious but have a robust flavor. I love them. It’s a delicacy in Italy but they eat much larger ones.
John, you are making me a super envious south fork guy. We just don’t have those beaches on the north shore of the south fork. Guess I’ll have to sell and relocate north. :) Did some blackfish reconnaissance on Sunday looking for unmarked spots (inspired by your side scan video, thanks for that) and ended up with a few choice off the grid locations. 18 fish and limit of keepers (all went back of course). Was also surprised to find them in 15 feet of water this early. Hopefully good tidings of a great blackfish season to come. Thanks again for the inspiration!
No, I’m south fork, not Mr Skinner. Just pointing out that our beaches are rock and boulder free, mostly sand, less hospitable habitat for the fish menagerie that John so deftly rules. Poseidon’s trident holds less sway over the ocean than John’s “Dark Matter“ rod does.
Do I like that rod over the slim wave as far as sensitivity goes when using this jigs? I need the perfect rod for using jogs for tog. I had a st croix mojo last season but I think it’s too heavy for that.
John Skinner Fishing I should’ve mentioned I need it for boat fishing. I have the trophy acid wrapped model. I assumed that was the spinning model but now I see it’s 2 pc. Thanks
Great video! Awesome job showing where to catch these crabs. Sea bass and tog from shore... they make a great meal... You mentioned you would prefer calmer conditions... if so would there be a need to use a heavier jig from shore? It appears you are using two crabs... I guess this depends on the size of the crabs or do you always use 2. Thanks, Scott
Less wind and chop makes it easier to feel the light jig. I want to keep the jig weight as light as possible. Sometimes I'll put three crabs on if they're small.
John, I am not sure how technical I can get when asking you about google maps but I'm guessing you are using the Terrain view instead of default view when looking on your phone or desktop. One other thing of interest from a gear and stuff perspective I would love to know is what type of boat you are fishing from in some of your video's. My buddy and I are looking to buy one and your fishing buddy Doc seems to have a great boat but I can never figure out what type it is. As always thank you for the great video's
Hi John - love your videos. Read through the comments but didnt find an answer to whether or not you could freeze these crabs and use them say a month later. p.s. Im in CT and used your fluke techniques from shore and caught 30 fish this season - only 1 keeper though but your techniques and advice truly work - thank you for a fun summer.
I have a trick for catching those Asian Crabs John. I fish East Marion at low tide and it's Rock City over there. All you need is a small pail like the kind kids use in the sandbox. They make them with sliding lids. As soon as you flip the rock, quickly place the pail face down to trap them all. Twist and turn the pail so it goes into the sand an inch or two. Then push the slide over and you have 90% of the crabs. The dump your catch into the bigger bucket and move to next rock. If you can't find a pail with the sliding top lid, use the same technique as I just described. Place clear saran wrap over the pail with extra slack. Slightly lift the pail and use the extra saran wrap slack to trap them and scoop them into the pail. Takes a little practice but works like a charm. Good Luck!!
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Also, another trick is to just lift the rock and throw a towel over them and do one big scoop and drop into the bucket. Happy Fishing. Maybe another underwater camera Blackfish Trip this fall under a bridge? That would be so cool to see the Blackfish on camera. Thanks John🎣
do you have any advice on parking i feel like long island does everything in its power to stop me from parking places since i'm not from a town on the water.
It has become much tougher this year b/c of Covid. I've seen so many tickets on windshields this year. They are enforcing like crazy. Look to the State parks. There are good ones on the North Shore that provide access to exactly this kind of fishing.
I can't get over the population density!! What do they feed on that so many can exist right on top of each other? Are they cannibals? I'll have to look into this, but it's no wonder you've got such a steady pick of fish with that kind of bait so readily available.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Thank you. I am right across from here I guess, in Westbrook, CT... caught many blackfish from my buddies boat, but up until now no luck from the shore. Would love to be able to get into some of this action without having to rely on the boat!
