The Temptations released this song in 1966 and had a huge hit for Motown. Rod Stewart released his version in 1971 but I really enjoy the 1970 version by Rare Earth also for Motown.
Great song regardless of who does it it, that’s for sure. Temptations original is classic. Love Rod’s wailing against the opening piano and Ronnie’s guitar, and Rare Earth could flat out play.
Well, the Faces were kaput in 75 (I got to see their "farewell" tour that year.) (one of the best shows I ever saw). Rod was going full-time solo after that tour, so Ronnie just moved on, rather than "left the Faces". Me and my buddies were all rooting for him to get the Stones gig. It seemed like a match made in heaven!
The band behind Stewart is The Faces, three quarters of one of the most influential UK bands of the 1960s, with the addition of Ronnie Wood, who would become Mick Taylor's replacement in the Rolling Stones and has been with them ever since. Drummer Kenney Jones would be Keith Moon's replacement in The Who. Ian McLagan (keyboards and vocals) and Ronnie Lane (bass and vocals) make up the rest of the band. Prior to The Faces, Jones, McLagan, and Lane were members of the great UK R&B/Psychedelic group, The Small Faces (with lead singer/guitarist Steve Marriott). They enjoyed a long string of hits in the UK while managing a handful in the US market. Some Small Faces songs to look for include Whatcha Gonna Do About It, Sha-La-La-La-Lee, All Or Nothing, Tin Soldier, Itchycoo Park, and Lazy Sunday. Lead singer Steve Marriott would help form Humble Pie after leaving the group and had some success with them, as well. There's a live version of Black Coffee that is incredible.
I saw the Faces a few times in the early '70s...they were were some of the best concerts I ever went to...I never saw so many people coming out of a concert with big smiles on their faces. They were like a glorified pub band, out there to enjoy themselves and making sure everybody enjoyed themselves right along with them. Their albums never really did justice to the quality, character, and expressiveness of their music...
This whole album is fantastic. I bought it as a teenager when it first came out 50 years ago and I've owned it in every format since and play it regularly.
This is Ronnie Wood, Ronnie Lane and Kenny Jones tearing it up behind Rod! Lane and Wood are the arrangers and Jones is the drummer who laid down the Funk Brothers beat. Blue-Eyed Soul to the MAX
The first time I heard Rod Stewart was on the radio, "Maggie May." I was hooked on his raspy voice... it's gotten better with age. My Mama, who lived to be 92 years old (she passed away in 2018), loved him, too. She always kept up with pop culture; my friends all called her "the cool mom," ... for instance, she called me during the Super Bowl when Prince & Beyonce played the half-time show: "Julie Bug, turn on the t.v. (she knew I wasn't a football fan and wasn't watching)..."the Purple One's on." Another time, I called her one morning and she'd just gotten out of the shower. She said, "Let me let you go so I can fix my hair, Bug. I'm standin' here lookin' like Rod Stewart," I don't mean to bore you guys, and I wanna say YOU TWO are the absolute BEST!
Although this was a solo album for Stewart (his third), this song features the entire Faces lineup (Ron Wood - guitar, Ronnie Lane - bass, backing vocals, Kenny Jones - drums, Ian McLagen - piano) backing him. Due to contractual issues that existed at the time, only Wood and McLagen received credit on the original personnel listing on the album. But, back then everybody knew it was a full on Faces track as soon as they heard it. Thanks for the great music, fellas!
Ron Wood on lead guitar later joined the Rolling Stones, & Kenny Jones on drums joined the WHO when Keith Moon died. Check out Rare Earths cover of this song.
Rod's had a passion for Motown. His idols were Same Cook, The Temptations, and The Isley Brothers, etc. His rock version of this song starts with some guitar riffing from Ron Wood (Rolling Stones) over a funky bass line that comes pummeling in with the drums, and “(I Know) I’m Losing You” hits a big, rolling - dare I say, heavy? - groove until it breaks down in the middle, so Rod and Wood can hum in the background for a while as Rod starts back up. From thereon, the song is never the same. The drums are crazy on this tune. The title song of this album, "Every Picture Tells A Story," is a banger. This was during Rod's Rockin' Days. Love this Album. Thanks, guys, for playing Rod and all the diverse styles of music on your channel. You guys are the best.
Off to another great Saturday. Rod is unique! You need to check out Jeff Beck and him. And when he was with the Faces. Excellent reaction fellas! Appreciate you 🙏 ❤
You know it's a great artist when they cover a song and then make it their own. Linda Ronstadt is another singer who can do that. Once she covers a song, it becomes her own. And she's done it time after time. Rod Stewart also covered the standard classic, Old Man River, with Jeff Beck; and what a revelation!
There's a live version of this readily available on YT. Well worth watching to see the interaction of the band members. I was alive when this stuff was released: Faces was hard rockin' then, and still is now. Like many other bands of that era, wish they could have stayed together and put out more music.
Rod Stewart, " I know I'm losing you ". All I got to say is. All due resp ect . Both Rod's, and the Temptations version are marvelous. Now listen to the band, Rare Earth's long version and in my mind. Rare Earth's sound is unmatched. The production, and arrangement got my attention, even with the cut version. Their musicianship, and personal devotion makes this song without any doubt their song.
Song has 2 of my favorite classic rock chord changes: the main verse with that D pedal tone under the chords (D,F/D,G/D,D), and the breakdown at 5:18 (that Dm with the chromatic c-c#-d lead in), I use those as warm-ups on guitar bc there's just enough funk to shake off the rust. Man, his voice is straight perfect for the amount of force the band puts into it.
I consider early Rod and his band quintessential RocknRoll!!!❤ raunchy rolling bass rich guitar and beat! And of course Rods voice! In concert no better show!❤
This album was released in 1971, and was very popular and had critical acclaim. Perhaps Rod’s best rock album, but being Rod always had his signature touch. The Faces came out of the Small Faces and had some great musicians, including Ronnie Wood, Kenney Jones, Ronnie Laine, among others.
OMG! I LOVE this song AND this whole album!!! You need to check out RARE EARTH's version...the LOOOONG one. Whole side of an album. Also, my favorite song on this album is the same as the name of the album...EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORY. (Be sure to have the lyrics pulled up.) PLZ keep going . You need to do the WHOLE album. It is a classic.
I love Rod's version.💙 I love The Temptations version.💙 But Rare Earth's version is the one that always rocks me to my core.💫💫💫 Would love to see what you think of that one...full-length version.💙💫
The Faces adding their own fierce groove to an already stand out track. Rod Stewart has said that when they played the track live they used to step back during the extended drum bridge & sneak off stage & go to the bar for a drink leaving an increasingly knackered & sweaty Kenney Jones hammering away at his drum kit whilst they casually sauntered back to the stage. Rock n Roll is the air that we breathe - these little stories are the icing on the cake as far as I'm concerned.
*Rod Stewart* and *Elton John* both jointly produced *Long John Baldrey* 1971 album "It Ain't Easy" Favourite song on album: *"Don't Try To Lay No Boogie-Woogie On The King of Rock & Roll"*
This whole album is great. I remember back in the late 80s on a break from college one summer my friend and I wore this out on cassette riding around high as shit everyday listening to this with no AC here in the ATL. Such a good time.
Congratulations on the steady increase in the number of subscribers. You guys continue to be the best of all the channels I'm subscribed to. No nonsense, no long, dragged-out interpretations of what you think the song means, no rewinding 50 times during a song. Just enjoyment and insight. Thank you.
One of my all-time favorite songs. The backing band is essentially the Faces, featuring current Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood. Stewart fronted the Faces for a bit before going solo. The Faces with Stewart made incredible music.
Great jam. Love, love, love Ronnie Wood's sense of rhythm. He was great with Jeff Beck...even better when playing bass, imo; he's bangin' with Rod and then is the other 'weaver' with Keef.
Rods records - Every Picture Tells a Story and Never a Dull Moment are rock classics. I saw his tour with Jeff Beck in the 80’s! It was jaw dropping! Peace
This is a Pure Jam session recording. This band not only feature Rod himself but also Ronnie Wood on guitar [who then went on to join The Rolling Stones], Kenny Jones on drums [who much later went on to join The Who after the passing of Keith Moon.
If you like this... you'll love the Album it comes from on the original LP Rod takes you to church singing Amazing Grace! I've never stopped listening to the Every Picture Tells A story album. But around the same time a band called (Rare Earth) released a 11 minute version of I Know I'm Losing You and they too made the well known song their own as well... I Just Want To Celebrate was a great hit off that album.
There's a great live version of this by The Faces, which is basically who;'s playing here. Stewart was their lead singer before going solo. That band was amazing. I think same people on this -- Ron Wood on guitar, Kenny Lane on bass, Kenny Jones on drums and Ian McGlaglen on keys.
Amazing how you start taking these songs for granted due to extensive airplay back in the day. But now when you hear them through headphones, they take on a life of their own, something you never heard 🔥
Not only a great song but probably one of the greatest rock songs ever produced. The intro., vocal breakdown, drum solo/featured, and the bass, piano, guitar, drums, vocals all having their opportunity to flex. When those drums get going in the middle, I go animal and can't stand atill. But the whole album is excellent, probably his best.

Temptations original is classic. Love Rod’s wailing against the opening piano and Ronnie’s guitar, and Rare Earth could flat out play.
@@hesh8367All true, IMO. I very much agree. @greenbeatsred: ditto. Rare Earth’s take on this is legendary!
@@tonydelapa1911yeah, the Rare Earth 11 minute version is just pure awesome-sauce!
I've got all three on my phone. I'm old enough to remember when each version hit the radio
Yep Rare Earths version is the bomb
It turned it into a rock song but retained the R&B vibe with great respect for the original.
Thats Ronnie Woods on guitar. He left Rod Stewart/Faces in 75 and has been with the Stones ever since....Always with the great energy fellas...thanks
Don't forget a Who drummer too...
Well, the Faces were kaput in 75 (I got to see their "farewell" tour that year.) (one of the best shows I ever saw). Great rundown. Thanks for the synopsis of the band credits. This is a real who's-who of the 60s-70s British blue-eyed soul pedagogy. Well done!
I saw the Faces a few times in the early '70s...they were were some of the best concerts I ever went to...I never saw so many people coming out of a concert with big smiles on their faces. Love Humble pie- one of my favourite bands. Steve Marriott is incredible
Humble Pie’s Performance Rocking the Filmore ; I don’t need no doctor a must for anyone reacting to bangers! ✌🏻
I love the way he made this song their own but fully kept the spirit and intensity of the original.
This whole album is fantastic. I bought it as a teenager when it first came out 50 years ago and I've owned it in every format since and play it regularly.
Great album! Ronnie Wood peakin' and band in full force.
A rock & roll masterpiece. The arrangement of every single thing is awesome.
Love the Rare Earth version too
Every picture tells a story
Donut.
“Every Picture Tells a Story”, is a great song. The bass is running through the whole song.
Yes, highly recommended!
One of my favorite Rod songs. Tells a great tale of fun being a famous young rock star travelling the world.
I don't know what it is but Rod Stewart just makes me happy 💕✌️
Rod has an amazing voice. Give Maggie May a listen. Keep it coming fellas so much more to discover✌️🎼🎶🎸🎵
That period of Rod's vocal career was unlike any other .
Bluesy to the core .
His collaborations with Jeff Beck are Top Shelf .
Early Rod Stewart is awesome!
This is Ronnie Wood, Ronnie Lane and Kenny Jones tearing it up behind Rod! Lane and Wood are the arrangers and Jones is the drummer who laid down the Funk Brothers beat. Blue-Eyed Soul to the MAX
Rare Earth version next..... thumbs up always guys!

The Rare Earth Cover is more psychedelic soul rock ..and it works

Rod had a three album run in the early 70's that stands up with any artist in any decade.
The early Rod solo era is the best when he was hungry and wanted to make it along with The Faces as his band ..
So damn Excited!
-Stay With Me
-Every Picture Tells a Story
Rod Stewart and Faces was my first live show in Philly '72. They were amazing.
Great song. Classic Rod Stewart. I love Carmen Appice's drumming. 💗 ❤❤
I do too, but it's Kenney Jones on this track and Mickey Waller on the rest of the album.

Have always loved this man !
"Every Picture..." - the title track is incredible. Next, please!!!
Rod with some MOTOWN !!!
Rod Stewart and the Faces were the greatest Rock ‘n’ Roll band of the 70’s. Check out “Every Picture Tells a Story.”
Rod's early bands, Faces and then this album really rocked out
Ron Wood on lead guitar later joined the Rolling Stones, & Kenny Jones on drums joined the WHO when Keith Moon died. Check out Rare Earths cover of this song.
Rod and The Faces are simply the Best of the Best!
This period was his best before he started singing love songs every album, my favorite bass line ,Jeff Beck is tearing it up too💯🔥🥩
oh you have to do the Rear Earth I'M Losing You Live they kill it thanks
Rare Earth. Autocorrect is a bitch 😏😉

That’s just a flat out great song by Rod and the gang. Made it his own. A classic in every definition of the word. 🔥
I know this isn’t the original but for me it is the quintessential version. Rod Stewart has so many great song from this era.
Great Great song basically faces Rod just made his 1st solo album😮
Had this one on 8 trac tape. I can still hear "the click" where trac changed during the song. Entire album is a treasure.
Kenny Jones on drums , he went on to the Who after Keith moon died
One of the best covers EVER. I immediately wanted to sing like Rod after hearing this for the first time.
All three versions are fantastic. My favorite one is the one I'm listening to. ;)
My favorite version of this song goes to Rare Earth from their Rare Earth Live in Concert album. You'll both love it!
Off to another great Saturday. Rod is unique! You need to check out Jeff Beck and him. And when he was with the Faces. Excellent reaction fellas! Appreciate you 🙏 ❤
Mandolin Wind is a great tune too❤, this to me is Stewart at his best
That song changed my life. I knew i wanted to drum, but this sealed it. To this day, i am associated with this version of the song.

Never was a big Rod Stewart fan, but his early recordings...especially with Faces, was pretty good.
OMG I forgot all about this song. Going on playlist. Thanks Fellas 😊
Got to check out Rod Stewart, Keith Richards and the Faces live, performing: "I'd Rather Go Blind" - Rod sings that song on his ear! Brilliant
Brings back so many memories thank you!
Oh YEAH!! ROD STEWART!!
Saw him live tour this album… His energy was off the charts, he and the band was kicking soccer balls to the upper seats at the far end of the arena.
There's a live version of this readily available on YT. Well worth watching to see the interaction of the band members. I was alive when this stuff was released: Faces was hard rockin' then, and still is now. Like many other bands of that era, wish they could have stayed together and put out more music.

So glad you played him. I saw Rod a few times in concert back in the 70's, even my mom liked Rod Stewart....lol!✌️😁
The very best Rod Stewart album.
Seen him twice. Always puts on a great show.

That album is fantastic. I think you guys would love it. Rod at his best
BEEN AWHILE! GREAT REACTION! They made it their own yet honored the original! Like Beth Hart and Joe!
Back in the Good old days when he was the front man with the Faces & made decent music!

My favorite song on the album
Rod Stewart in his blues/rock prime. This whole album is gold, essential classic rock.
Loved the days when Rod Stewart sang for The Jeff Beck Group, plus his early albums like this one
Great song. I recommend you another from sir Rod thats call "dancin' alone". Very sick song. Greetings from Mexico

The one song on the album with Rod fronting the Small Faces again
I saw them in 1973, Ron wood was still with the band.
