Ron Wood, Rod's bandmate in Faces, deserves a lot of credit for this song too. He plays the little intro, and then plays all the guitar parts plus that amazing bass line!
Ron Wood played electric guitar and bass here. Acoustic guitar and mandolin were played by others. Ray Jackson played the iconic mandolin parts. The intro was played by Martin Quittenton.
All that mattered back then was knowing every single word of Msggie May .I fell hard for Rod when I saw him on Top of the Pops, clowning around , singing this, kicking a ball around, he was an ex football player, sorry ! Soccer ⚽️ 😂
The lyrics to this are excellent, the storytelling sublime, and then Rod's voice TELLING that story? Fuggedaboutit! Like you guys were saying: One of a kind!
And John Peel famous radio DJ and music brain wizard expert on the mandolin!! Yes, he did a spoof appearance on Top of the Pops playing it . Never heard much of an organ though ??
Rod Stewart is the reason Jeff Beck never had another singer in any of the bands he played in after Rod left the Jeff Beck band in the 60’s. Jeff said when you had the best singer there was no point in trying to find another. Check ou Rod singing “Let Me Love You” with Jeff’s band. A blues masterpiece.
Beck reformed the Jeff Beck Group with Bobby Tench on vocals. They cut two albums. Check out the Rough and Ready album. I don't believe he had another vocalist after this band.
Mr.Stewart has one of the best scratchy, raspy voices in Rock n' Roll. John Fogerty and Bob Seger aren't too shabby either😎👍👍Happy New Year to you both. I love your channel Smart, funny, and entertaining.I love to see the pleasure you get from the old school music.Your channel and others won't let it die!👍👍
Jeff Beck did have another singer. His name is Bob Tench. Recorded an album called Jeff Beck Group. It has an orange on the front cover. the album includes Cozy Powell on drums Max Middleton, on keyboards. I forgot the bass players name. I think it’s one of Jeff’s best albums, and it includes songs like Going Down, Ice Cream Cakes and a cover of Dion’s Tonight I’ll be Staying Here with You. Every song on the album is incredible. You should check it out.
Great song, very wistful tune about a first love. Who just happened to be an older woman! True story from Rod, met some older woman at a festival when he was a teenager. Happy new year, gents!
There is a scene in the movie Lords of Dogtown where this is played. I loved this song before that movie. Now, after that movie, I always picture Heath Ledger singing. Gorgeous song.
Could not smoke enough cigarettes or drink enough whiskey to replicate that voice. Can hear the sixties to 70s musical transformation in this gorgeous gem
This song put Rod Stewart on the map. Well, on my map anyway. That guitar was infectious! I used to listen to this song, and so many others, on a transistor radio while riding my bike around the neighhborhood. I wonder how many kids are doing that today? None, I bet!
@lrockthere Interesting. I thought it sounded like what I heard on an album my girlfriend gave me back then - Baroque (1600 - 1750) guitar. Harmony and counterpoint. Thanks -
Hello La & Che, this is one of my personal favorites by Rod Stewart. Here's another one of their songs, if interested. "Rod Stewart - You Wear It Well " (by the channel: Rod Stewart) --This song was written by Rod Stewart and Martin Quienton, this song "You Wear It Well" was released as a single in 1972, and was on their fourth studio album "Never A Dull Moment". The song became an international hit, reaching number #1 on the UK Singles chart. Thanks for sharing, we appreciate you rocking with us during the New Years Eve🎊🎇
Rod Stewart also loves the Motown sound, and recorded some remakes. He played banjo, but not too often. He's an incredible rocker especially in the early 70's. But just like the Stones, he acclimated with the times, and did some 'almost' disco pop music. He's incredible Check out the Faces live recording 1972 Stay with Me, etc. On you tube
I have seen Rod Stewart live several times and have never known him to play an instrument, perhaps a tambourine but I am not even certain about that. He usually has a very strong band often staffed with very well known and always very talented musicians.
Ronnie Wood, who does the guitar work here, in 1973 joined the Rolling Stones and has been their 2nd guitarist along with Keith Richards ever since. He asked Rod Stewart for his ok to leave Rod's band before he joined the Stones. He and Keith had been friends for some time.
"You Wear It Well," and "The First Cut is the Deepest," along with "This Old Heart Of Mine," "Sailing', "Young Turks. And "Reason to Believe. Any of these songs are excellent. Keep up the great work, guys; you're greatly appreciated.
Rod Stewart plays the banjo on "MANDOLIN WIND" for his "MTV UNPLUGGED" episode, and in concert as a member of THE FACES he would play electric rhythm guitar on "SWEET LADY MARY".
First saw "Rod the Mod" when he was playing with Steam Packet--a sort of bluesy, soul outfit. Vocal duties were shared between Rod, Julie Driscoll and Long John Baldry(another amazing singer.) The Brian Auger Trinity provided the backing.
This was my introduction to rock-n-roll. Was washing my hair in the kitchen sink and this came on the little portable radio I had. Later, I met Ronnie Lane who was part of Faces (Small Faces, Slim Chance). It sure takes me back to some good times.
The memories I have to this song are priceless. Great story behind the song. Last song they put on this album. It was released on the B side of a single. Some DJ in the Mid West decided to check it out. The Rest Is Rock & Roll History. Happy New Years Guys ❤
My parents (Mom) played this album so much she deepened the grooves while the sound was cranked, great album with so many great songs and memories. Martin Quittenton played the acoustic guitar and Ronnie Wood played the electric guitar and bass guitar.
Try In a broken dream, "Rods vocals are sublume, recorded under the name of Python Lee Jackson. A singer called Long John Baldrey discovered Rod, he was singing on Twickenham station platform, waiting for a train, he heard him and signed Rod up....
"My song" in high school. Always loved the mandolin. From The Faces' album First Step, please check out "Flying" and "Around the Plynth." Nobody ever does that album!
A true masterpiece of a song and album, you should do the title cut as well, that is, Every Picture Tells a Story. Great sound and amazing acoustic mix along with Rod's amazing vocals. Enjoy! Happy New Year! 🍾 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶 🍾
I remember when this song first came out. I loved it then and I still love it now. I’m not sure who the guitar player was but I don’t think it was Ronnie Wood. The mandolin Solo is uncredited on the album but I’ve heard that the guys name is Ray Jackson. I’ve never seen Rod play an instrument, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he does. 🕊❤️🎼
Thanks for pointing out that you know most of the older great musicians by music they made when they were past their prime--the had been itching at the back of my mind. IMO that includes Rod, the Stones, Elton John. IMO their best three albums are Every Picture Tells A Story, Let It Bleed, and Madman Across The Water. And all three made plenty of music after that. I am grateful to see the music I've always loved through new eyes. 🙏
There was a time when you literally could not turn on the radio, on practically any channel, without hearing this song. Yet I'm still not sick of it.
Every year, when classic rock stations do their countdown of the best rock and roll songs, this song is near the top.
Truth!
amen his best
Rod was singing like this at 16... and still going
One of my all time fav songs, sung by one of the best voices in rock. First album I bought with my own money.
Come to think of it, I think I did too. 1971. Love this album
I got the album as a Christmas present my very first vinyl record 1971 love it still ❤

Ronnie Wood is on guitar
Who couldn't love this song? After all these years, I still do.
Love these dudes presentation
This song made me pick up the mandolin and learn how to play. I grew up listening to this song. Early Rod Stewart...what a song.
A living legend.
One thing I like about Rod is you can understand every word he sings always. Which makes it easy to enjoy the lyrics.
Yes, along with Paul Rodgers.
Never gets old and I have heard it a thousand times, from the day of it's release. We all loved Rod, boys and girls.
Hope y'all get to Mandolin Wind .Rod is truly a storyteller... His songs make you feel it
Definitely one of his best albums and one of the first albums I ever bought
That is Ronnie wood on guitar, played with the stones for the last 35 years
The lyrics to this are excellent, the storytelling sublime, and then Rod's voice TELLING that story? Fuggedaboutit! Like you guys were saying: One of a kind!
Jeff Beck's "Truth" is calling your names, Rod Stewart is the lead vocalist on the entire album...every song is a masterpiece ❗️❗️
One of the most influential rock albums ever, future superstars and soon, Rock Legends, killing it start to finish.

"Truth" was an amazing album.
Besides Rods gravely voice I am loving that organ. This song brings many teenage memories.

One of my most favorite Rod songs! I think it came out in 1972 when I was 11

Rods voice. Is like a velvet bag of diamonds being dragged down a gravel road.

What a great and superlative simile.

Jeff Beck’s Truth album featuring Rod Stewart on vocals is a gem!
This classic is one of the 1970s best, thanks for playing it
'Every Picture Tells A Story', the album from which this comes, is an absolute banger.
And a special mention for Ray Jackson’s fabulous mandolin contribution !
What an amazing performance from the bassist! Believe it or not Ronnie Wood played bass, lead guitar and 12 string guitar on this song!❤❤❤❤

Every young man may have a Maggie.
Stewart, Never A Dull Moment, a favorite of mine, along with that Faces stuff. So good.
So much to listen to!!
Rod Stewart in his prime. None better at that time in rock.
I love Ronnie Wood's bass playing. So melodic! I was just starting to play bass when this came out in 1971 and it had a big influence on me.
I didn't know he played bass on this track, now after a google I find he played bass, lead guitar and 12 string, you learn something every day.
It was stellar. ❤
That beginning is called “Henry” written by the guy who co-wrote this song with Rod.

One of the most underrated guitar solos of all time. Especially the 2nd one. A real masterpiece. ❤
The most famous mandolin solo of all time (probably)!
