  • Triple-decked super yacht found itself in a challenging situation with the strong tide and the inability to clear under the bridge. When reversing out in such circumstances, the force of the tide can indeed make maneuvering difficult. Unfortunately, it got swept in the barrier protecting the bridge resulted in damage to the side of the yacht from top to water level.

Fortunately for all concerned, this yacht did not possess the momentum of a 150,000 ton container ship...

There’s a distinct point, around 2:25, where he looks like he decides to bring it about with forward propulsion and rudders only. He should have backed further then brought it around with differential and the thrusters. Rudders are useless in this situation. Even without the current he would have been hard pressed to bring it about on rudders only.

The left stern almost hit the side retaining wall, guesss he hit the gas and the tide took it from him. No way he is going to turn that vessel, too tight.

Sorry, I am not a sailor. The damages in the hull looks like in a glas fiber hull? Has this ship a glas fiber hull? I think it was not a steel hull!

That is a Azimut Grande 28….28 meters or around 90 feet in the old measurements. Generally It’s only until you get to above 40 meters (130 Feet) that they would use High Tensile Steel, otherwise Marine Aluminum alloys on the actual Hull. On a yacht with a steel hull you would be paying through the nose because unlike military craft you will be paying through the nose for prep work before you could repair a steel hull. ( If you want it to look pretty 😍 ) Either way, it’s not going to be cheap. But if you have the monies for. Yacht like this you know it will co e with unexpected cost. On cue you own a yacht over 90 feet you have to put in your operation budget for these kinds of accidents. If you cannot afford those cost, you would not be able to afford the running cost. Has anyone figured out why we have such a big backlog in the US Navy repairs….it takes time and money.

Obviously cannot read a chart for bridge clearance, or never bothered to measure their vertical profile?

The incoming tide was low, it could have cleared under the bridge but they spooked and it got worst.
