I'm in Alaska and used to skipper a long line halibut fishing boat. Hate to jump to conclusions without all the information but it did look like the green boat was giving actual service by removing water from the yacht. By what the video shows the red boats did little more than show up. Unless there is more to it i say the win goes itowboats and of course the Sunny Isle P.D. for getting passengers safely to shore.

Great video. I am a retired salvage master with 40 years experience, I owed a fleet of salvage boats. Every boat I owned had pumps on them. All my captains were skilled boat mechanics as well as skilled operators with extensive salvage and hazmat training. The Boat US services were lacking in any meaningful assistance. Clearly the vessel pumped the vessel dry saved it from sinking. And owned the senior tights to a salvage claim. But the other vessels that responded were just as much restricted in their ability to respond to other work as the one that was pumping the vessel and as such also have a legal claim. The fifth district court of appeals made that into law many years ago. So they all have a claim just not equal ones.
People don;t know that doing a great job on a salvage is only half the battle the rest is fighting for payment from the insurance companies. Salvors have a right to a percentage of what they save but getting that takes a legal battle that many can't afford and the insurance companies know that and take advantage of it.
Of note is that all boats are supposed to have a sea cock on all though hulls. As such the crew of the vessel should have been able to stabilize the intrusion without the help of a salvage service other than a tow. That said most boaters lack many basic skills. A simple trick to stop water is with the use of a toilet bowl wax ring. Just cram the wax into the hose or fitting, works great.

Same thing happened to me on my schooner. The hose to the engine water pump came off and I didn't notice it until the boat started feeling "sluggish" and I felt little air puffs coming up through the floorboards. I checked the bilge and it was a bit over half-full of seawater, so that sent me on a manic sprint to the engine room. Luckily, the water was still far below the diesel, so I fixed the hose and helped the "overwhelmed" electric bilge pump with the manual Whale "Gusher 30" (30 gpm manual lever diaphragm pump). Didn't take long to get things working right again. After that, I installed a float switch buzzer alarm about half-way up the bilge pocket so I'd have an 'early' warning next time something like that happens.

It's been in my barnyard as a "project" ever since and now I'm working out how I want to refit it. It's a 48 year old boat and I'm a 68 year old sailor, so we'll be "age compatable," I guess. I plan to install one or two electric bilge pumps, but will also have a Whale Gusher 30 or a Gusher 10 fitted and plumbed through a cockpit locker to the bilge so that it can be operated by me from the helm if I have to dewater the boat while still sailing if some kind of accident or disaster happens that the electric pumps won't work. I'll also have a 36-inch (stroke) West Marine style bilge pump as well. @@dimitriacrosse2468

My dad had a similar problem on our boat when I was 17 (edit:1970). We were out fishing and as we were motoring from drop to drop the engine suddenly started to run rough and the boat was obviously taking water. We had no radio but there were dozens of boats all around us. I was blasting my emergency horn and not one single boat would stop to help us. We actually had one 40' cabin cruiser pull up along side and I told him we were taking on water and had no propulsion. I thought he would help us get to shore but his wife yelled at him to keep going and he motored off. Finally my dad, a great fixer of anything, opened up the engine compartment, examined the situation, found the intake hose that has broken off of it's fitting and with some rags shoved it back in place and held it so that I could pilot our little 19' doubled ended lapstrake converted 1940 USN launch safely to port. Hoses matter, and so do thru-hulls. Kudos to that responder who immediately tossed in the pump hose and prevented the yacht from sinking.

The itow captain probably discovered this after pumping the water down and probably just closed the valve to that engine. Then he was able to restart the 2nd engine which was probably fine. He saved the day for sure. I’m a bit surprised that the captain of that yacht didn’t make any attempt to identify and close the valve. He may have been too focused on getting everyone off. Great coverage! As a yacht captain who has been shipwrecked in the Bahamas, I get the story. Its not first on the scene, but the first to give aid. Additionally, if a towboat shows up and you set your troubled vessel on a sandbar to keep it from going to the bottom, then its a salvage and not a tow. In this case, had the boat just lost power, it would be a tow. But, since it was taking on water and had to be evacuated, then it became a salvage. If you ever loose power, drop anchor and call for help. DO NOT put you vessel on the beach unless you have a way of fixing it and getting it back into the water. Sigh.

I'm sure the captain just paid them for the tow and pumping the water out.

Thank you for a great video. I agree with most of the other viewers. I cannot add anything different. Great rescue. I am a ex Navy guy and a boat owner in my younger years. I can sympathize with the people involved in this rescue. Thank you again and keep them coming.

Very lucky to have the boat distress so close to land and support, during daylight and in such a calm sea. Change one and this will be very different. Next time everybody in life vest is first order. Even the ladies evacuated in the raft were in big danger, none had vests and they did not seem to br fit to float for long…thanks God it all went ok

That was wild. Good video. Legally, I think the TowBoatUS guy had the right to the salvage, but the iTowboat Captain is the one who is responsible for saving the vessel.

If I owned that vessel .that means I'm ok in life lol I'd say I'd pay itow and if towboat billed me I'd take them to court and waste their money. The captain was not competent what so ever. Itow was tied up and pumping before towboat had 2 ropes on.

Usually first on scene, butt that "captain" did nothing to facilitate saving the vessel! iTowBoats immediately deployed his pump apparatus and inspected the hull for a breach there by keeping the vessel from parking on Davey Jones locker! In the end the proper salvage was exercised.
Great job by the iTowBoats Captain! 👍 😎

Hah! Salvage belongs to the guy that didn't ram the boat to try and make it sink faster. 🤣ITOWBOATS definitely deserves the glory for saving that boat from being on the bottom of the inlet. While the captain of the towboatsus deserved getting dismissed, that guy needs a whole lot more practice runs before he's ready for real-time professional execution.

Oh believe me I ranted on the idiot Captain Idiot and his PFD-less passengers aboard a seriously loaded tender headed straight for you-know-where. I’m goddamn certain there were intoxicated crew judging from the utter lack of coordination on their part.

us acting like he could actually hold up a argument there for a bit but even the captain chose itow, us needs better responders i’m sure they’ll see this. itow is solving situations before they’re bigger of course he gets the win either way.

Towboatus captain is just talk, bumps into the vessel and watches it to sink not even rescuing passengers. Meanwhile Itowboat captian is getting to work immediatly, pumping water and inspecting the damage from under the vessel like a pro.
