captain should know do, i will say more than 50% of those boats in trouble could be way better by moving few people to stern from the bow. i dont know much about boats but simple fisics, come on...
In my day in order to get your license to drive a boat you had to go to classes, pass the test and get the license at the DMV (California). There was a safety class included regarding lifejackets/vests, passengers, you know a handbook like driving a car!! Is that not required anymore? Do you not need a license to pilot a boat have passengers onboard??
@JohnDoe-gk7mx There is a requirement for PCOC license but rental companies don't enforce it as long as you have a driver's license. If stopped by an enforcement agent it's $200 fine here, not nearly high enough IMO if you don't know what you're doing and endanger yourself and others
I know absolutely nothing about boats, beyond the word "boat" just means "bust out another thousand." What is the difference between lake/river and a sea boat?
I have a 20’ bow rider on a large lake in NH and we won’t go out on windy days. It’s choppy and uncomfortable - zero fun. I can’t imagine going on the ocean in a lake boat when there are plenty of days I won’t go on our lake in the lake boat. WTAF?
I see all these people sitting in the front of the boat. That's the worst place to be. They should be in the middle to reduce the 'bounce' effect. I grew up by the sea in NZ. I am now 62 and used to row a 12 ft alloy boat in waves like that as a teen with no problem. We had to take the boat out, Sink it, flip it upside down, turn it back over, empty the water, and row back to the shore while my father watched from the beach before we were allowed to go out by ourselves. ps. The boat had polystyrene under seats etc so it didn't sink to the bottom. We also had to wear a life jacket while leaving or returning to the beach through the surf. Great content. Good work.
I grew up by the sea in NZ as well. You only had to be dumped by a 2m high west coast wave to develop a healthy respect for the ocean and to learn not to take the stupid risks that some of the people in the videos are taking.
First- No Life jackets at least on the children. Second- too many people riding the bow of the boat. Too much weight in the front. Third- and this one blows me away that they can’t figure it out is trimming the motor up, this causes the prop to drive downward and forward lifting the bow higher. More throttle higher bow.
They need experience and more experience and more experience and stay out of the pass because they will never have that much experience operating a boat once or twice a year
Should not put a bow rider in those conditions at all. Firstly they do not have wet decks so that the water can run off and secondly their bows are too low for the swell that they would encounter. Thirdly, if you want to go there then seat your passengers at the back. Finally a flat water boat should not even be there period.
It is amazing to see boats overloaded with passengers and many passengers in the bow which forces the front of the boat to tilt forward and force water into the boat. There seem to be a lot of inexperienced captains who are not in control of their boats or passengers which creates problems before they leave the dock. The captain is responsible for the safety of her/his boat, her/his passengers and making sure that they pay attention to the boats and conditions around their boat. Safety First!
how dare you try to inject common sense, logic and responsibility into their fun!! the median IQ is around 105-110. Which means HALF of all adults are below that level. Obviously so from these adventures...
...and it really infuriates me that someone will put their pet pup in the boat under conditions like this and then not put a floatation vest on it. Like the guy in the Boston Whaler.
i know it’s scary but sometimes you need to go faster in rougher water just get on top of the waves. it me a long time to get over the fear of going fast in rough water but once you find that speed and proper trim setting for the conditions it is so smooth
Yeah the boats are too small. All they can really do is turn around lol. Or trim bow up and put everyone to the mid-back, and go slow. And adjust the angle of attack. Craziness.
@@waynejohnstone3685 Trimming the bow up in rough water while going slow is the wrong thing to do. Just makes you porpoise even more. Gotta keep the trim down. Moving everyone to the back is correct though.
@@TehButterflyEffect I meant at just above idle. Just enough to keep the bow of these bow riders up a bit. If it porpoises it’s trimmed too much. I agree with your point tho.

They should call this "Darwin's Test." The overloaded boat with 10 adults on it taking on water and ONE dude made a feeble effort to splash a little back into the sea with one hand while the rest looked on dumbfounded.
I was yelling at the screen… Stop driving, move the people to the back and then SLOWLY try to go to nearest shore. Stop again if it keeps diving and try slowly backing your way to shore, stopping and waiting for help if you keep sinking… 🙈
Well I can't speak for the crappy outboards in this video, but my Chaparral is designed to float while completely full of water and with a hole in the hull. I can't remember how much of the hull it can lose and still float, but it's a surprising amount. That said, I'd still never take my boat out on the ocean, and certainly not in water this rough. And you can be dang sure my kids always have life jackets on.
As someone who sailed deepsea for 35 years in various vessels it never fails to surprise me how people underestimate the power of water whether at sea or on a lake. It's almost as if life jackets or buoyancy aids will ruin their fun.
Lakes can be very dangerous too. Utah lake always has a few ski boats that swamp every year because the water is only about 8 feet deep and the rollers break over the back of the boats.
10:02 Not really the best time to learn how to put on a life jacket. AND They are called LIFE JACKETS for a reason people. Sorry, we all know this I'm just yelling at the fools on this video. Thing is... These silly lake boats are absolutely not suited for this. But also its not a big windy, wavey day. Its the shape of these "inlets" that creates this situation. They are not professionally built. Instead of this being a daily rescue operation, they should just fix it and do it properly. This does not happen anywhere else.

Not really. There's a bunch of these vids with them going fast and the comments are all roasting him for trying to cripple his passengers. Definitely a couple could have used some speed but you aren't getting on plane with most boats through there on day like that. It seems the main culprit is trim and weight distribution in the front. Pretty much everyone who got in trouble stuffed the bow into a wave. As a Midwesterner the juice doesn't seem worth the squeeze. So what do you do once you get out to open water? Just drive around while sun fries you? Some of these barely even have somewhere to sit uncomfortably lol I mean I get the yacht thing....but a whaler if not fishing and deal with ramp and this? Do these glorified bath tubs have bilge pumps? They do seem to be able to fill up to the gunwales and stay afloat so it seems like they're just a sealed compartment full of foam or something.
@@chrisburn7178Yes and yes. The better ones are double-hulled foam sandwiches and will float while full of water. Mine will. Some of these crappy outboards won't. They are required by law to have a bilge pump.
I am unaware of how the legislation in the US will be, but in Spain (and the rest of Europe), you need to obtain licenses as the size of the boat or the distance you want to sail away from the coast increases, such as the PNB, PER, yacht skipper, yacht captain...etc. These courses include a minimum number of hours of practice both with motor and sailing, radio communications, emergencies, national and international maritime law, and that kind of thing, among others. I mention all this because I see it repeated many times in videos, people who seem to have no idea how to navigate boats, the weather, the state of the sea... How are you going to put a lot of weight in the front when leaving a channel towards the sea with waves against you? It's unbelievable, I guarantee you that in Europe, such negligence is punished since you put the lives of other occupants, other boats and/or people, and your own at risk...
I have said it repeatedly on this channel. In the USA, you can spend half a million dollars on a boat, have never owned one before, and are allowed to pile the people in, stow the lite jackets in a locker, then head out in the roughest seas, that the Captain as never seen before, and endanger everyone’s life. Gotta love it. I particularly love the videos that the boat gets in trouble, takes on water, then everyone decides it would be a good idea to put on the life jackets. I used to go skiing with some friends, on a lake mind you, and we ALWAYS wore a life jacket. Why would you not? These people are idiots.
@@jeffmech1 Totally agree, but my question is, does U.S. law actually allow that? I know each state has its own laws since they have their own regulations, but a state like Florida, with so many recreational boats owned by individuals... I just can't wrap my head around it. Like I said before, in Europe, and especially in my country, Spain, if the Guardia Civil catches you breaking the rules, you’re getting slapped with a hefty fine-whether it's for not having a radar reflector, being drunk, carrying more people than allowed, doing anything that risks the lives of passengers or other boats, etc. Anyway, as you said, those videos are entertaining to watch and prove Einstein’s point: “Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I’m not sure about the universe.” Looking forward to more of the channel, and I’ll be visiting Florida soon on a family trip. I’ve already told them I’m taking some time in the afternoon to go check out that spot with my own eyes, haha. Big hug from across the pond!
What could that captain have done differently? He could not have left the safety of The Intercoastal Waterway when there was obviously a "small craft warning in effect"! @ 13:36
What people fail to realize is that these are not ocean waves. These are river waves from all the current flowing out of the cut, a completely different animal.
@@Justin-hz8bh with ocean waves the energy moves and the water stands still. In a river wave, what rafters and kayakers call "standing waves" the water moves and the wave energy stays stationary. Watch the videos and the bad waves are always in the same spot, they have much steeper faces like breaking waves that surfers love. You don't see ocean boats in the surf for a reason. So ocean waves are much easier because the faces aren't so steep.
Never been there but this is clearly a bar-way, where the incoming and outgoing currents dump sand at the mouth, making it shallow, causing ocean waves to stand up as they reach the sandbar. Only constant dredging can fix that
You need to learn what you are talking about. There is no difference between "river waves" and "ocean waves". What you are referring to in a river is rapids. Rapids are formed by stationary objects in the water - hence why they don't move. Waves are formed by tidal forces and wind and current. These waves here are caused by tidal flow and the wind going opposite of the tide. Heading into the waves can cause a choppy ride if you don't know what your doing (like the idiots in this video). Going the same direction as the waves is called a following sea. It's usually smoother but if you aren't paying attention the wave can catch up to u and swamp your transom.
@@mikel9567 Well then answer me this, why are the bad waves at this cut in the exact place for every boat? Because the bottom features in the cut are causing standing waves just like in a river rapid. Watch multiple videos and the top wave is in the exact place every time. Please think before you comment, have a nice day.

It's like watching people ruin those mega sports cars when then spin out.
Not quite true, Patrick. To qualify, you must be able to fog up a mirror.
@JohnDoe-gk7mx There is a requirement for PCOC license but rental companies don't enforce it as long as you have a driver's license. If stopped by an enforcement agent it's $200 fine here, not nearly high enough IMO if you don't know what you're doing and endanger yourself and others

@@Tld0026 thank you!
Keeping your boat there in the first place, or not checking the conditions before trying to go out at least!!
Finally a flat water boat should not even be there period.
the total disregard for the safety of other boaties just coz you want to go fast is incredible

Too many people shouldn’t be operating a boat in the first place.

The default ones seem to do that... Good (automatically inflating) ones wear much easier. They seem to be entirely absent from these boats...
Lakes can be very dangerous too. Utah lake always has a few ski boats that swamp every year because the water is only about 8 feet deep and the rollers break over the back of the boats.

Sometimes you just don't have enough bilge pump strength when you scoop up a couple of hundred gallons of ocean.
Anyway, as you said, those videos are entertaining to watch and prove Einstein’s point: “Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I’m not sure about the universe.”

What people fail to realize is that these are not ocean waves. These are river waves from all the current flowing out of the cut, a completely different animal.
So are you saying that the ocean waves are much worse? No attitude, just asking. 👍👍
