Maynard James Keenan of Tool talks 2 days after 9/11 (09.13.01) about the 9/11 attacks during Tool's concert in Michigan. (This is a collection of all comments Maynard James Keenan made that day).

All I can say is that it took massive balls to say what MJK said back then. Massive.
yes
Just so everyone understands, there's a MOB of people starting a "USA, USA chant" at around 3:00, and Maynard states "You all are going to be really bummed out when you find out the USA did it."
This could have ended badly for him, for Tool, because at that space and time (anyone remember?) shit was bonkers.
Again, Maynard is a boss for stating that, and stating it so early, before Michael Moore, before Zeitgeist, Loose Change, etc.
Giant fucking balls.
Adolph Oliver Bush How the hell did he know? Just days later? I didn't hear the true story until years and years later. Granted I was just 9 when it happened but damn...maynard just seemed to know.
Matthew Bramlett
Honestly, man, if you follow the previous WTC attack in '93, plus the Waco/Ruby Ridge incidents, then the Oklahoma bldg fiasco, it isn't hard to connect the dots. I'm 44, and remember all these events with clarity. See, the first WTC bombing in the basement didn't go as planned. Read up on it if you like.
Amen brother, some of us (Im 46) connected the dots before it was "cool".

@@InSpiralEyes Can't stand the TRUTH eh biatch? It's likely Major James Keenan since he got the nickname Maynard in the Corps.
Just because he joined the military at a young age and then dropped out does not mean he is the snake you made him sound like. . . I've heard him talk about the military in multiple interviews. His aim is definitely not to decieve.
he gave almost the same speech on 9/12 in columbus ohio. i remember when the croud started chanting usa usa he stopped them and told them it wasnt about that. it was about all the innocent people who lost their lifes
He wasn't there on 9/12
Yea. They were in Michigan on 9/11 thru 9/13. The Michigan show was scheduled on 9/11. And took place on 9/13. There was no Ohio show in between.
Dont remember the date exactly. It was right after but he said hold on there Mr USA chanters. We need to look at ourselves and see what caused this or something like that..

+Mehbobo Torp Not hard to do when MJK is privy to geopolitical psychological operations. He was a West Point candidate, his music is mind control straight out of Project Artichoke ala Grateful Dead, Beatles, et al. He plays the anti-thesis role quite well though.
+Johnathan Myers I've heard the theory that Tool are nothing more than informed Mind Control agents who sold their soul to Satan for fortune and fame, but I have trouble buying it.
Tool set me on a path of inner and outer discovery. Both of my own power, and the profound corruption of the State. Illuminati and all that stuff... I know they don't ever mention Illuminati, but their music, their lyrics and their vibe definitely set me on a path of discovery... which seems counter-productive for supposedly trying to "control people's minds" or "lead them astray".
Furthermore, why would such an evil entity incorporate the 432 hertz in their music? Hmmm...
+Mehbobo Torp Well at least you are aware of the effect music has on our your own freewill... your knowledge of the change in musical frequency proof of that.
+Johnathan Myers Absolutely, man. And what I'm saying is that I, in large part, have Tool to thank for that. They set me on the path of research that lead me far down the rabbit hole.

toby56 Tool played Chicago on that date. I was there and remember it clear as day.
Damn what a great first time smoking story
Trippy week lol
I was at the concert in cleveland, 2 weeks after this, Maynard was not happy with the patriotic cheers from the audience. (USA....USA) At that time, I was upset with that, but after more than a decade, I see he was right.
I was there too. In Cleveland. Maynard said "Shut up! Shut up! This is not a political forum!"
I've said since I was a teenager that the only president I ever liked was George Washington. The purpose of the Declaration of independence was to eliminate a dictatorship government and the constitution was put in place for the reason of keeping it that way. Unless someone comes up with a way to rectify the unconstitutional control or government has today, things will get worse. And if 'we the people' finally wake up n take back control b4 it's too late, things will get worse b4 they get better. And with that Is like to add 2 things, #1 It is still o.k. to live the U.S., just know that it's government doesn't represent what it stands for, #2 In either coming scenario of events, be prepared and educate yourself
I was at that show and I remember the U.S.A. chants. Loading up in a couple cars and taking a short road trip over to Cleveland from western PA for a concert was the first normal thing my friends and I had done since the 11th. So glad the show wasn't cancelled.
Nothing wrong with patriotism. It's the parasite within that tarnishes it. It's called government and corruption.

Maynard's live rants are often unusual & insightful in equal measures.
Does he always give speeches during shows?
He gave one at Boston Calling and it was honestly one of the best speeches ive ever heard in my life. Ever.
No he didn't in OKC, OK ..
He sounds so annoyed after they start chanting USA.
yeah. fuck him
@@jtjt4827 fuck him for being a proponent of independent thought?

It's funny how many people just don't realize Maynard is trolling sometimes. How many people screamed when he offered up the "Nonconformist Oath" not realizing it was an oxymoron.
Ever been to a punk or metal gig? I know alot of tool fans are tools but I would certainly ironically cheer along to the nonconformist oath.
Comments like these are why people find Tool fans pretentious FYI.
I was at the show on 9/10 in Madison Wisconsin. Maynard said then " There's some bad people out there and they want to hurt us badly. Be aware, be prepared. It's coming soon". How profound a statement 1 day before it happened.
You should see the painting his friend and collaborator Alex Grey painted in 1989 entitled GAIA it predicts 9/11 way back then. This event was planned. Maynard is a heavy occultist he knew it was going to happen he knows more than most people.
there was never a 9/10 show.
I was there, and it was not on the tenth. It was on the seventh. Still have my ticket stub.
@@dantemack88Exactly
"You're gonna be bummed when you find out the USA did it" I'm so glad he pointed that out.
I was supposed to see them on 9/12 in Dayton, OH but it was cancelled cuz of 9/11. I remember thinking when I heard it was cancelled "well, the terrorists already won"
Halfway through this he says "You are all gonna be bummed out when you find out it was the US GOVERNMENT that did it."
I said the same thing on 9/11, at a restaurant in Houston, TX. An investment banker told me, I wasnt a banker, I was employed at the office he used to justify payroll for his personal whore, my friends sister, a former stripper.
He called me at the office and asked me if I saw the news. I replied that I did not watch television anymore. He told me what happened and I said 'I wouldnt be surprised to find out that this is just a government agenda being advanced for reasons we do not yet understand. "
It wasnt a ridiculous idea then and it isnt ridiculous now.
I got a national defense ribbon shortly after and went off to fight this holiest of wars, and do you know what I saw when I got there?
People just like you and me.
Hats off to you sir. I wonder where you are now. Still in the military?
"...and this is what they choose"
Tfw Maynard says "Certainly there will be alot more pain around the globe in the coming years" and it is 2019....
The world will suffer more tragedy? Woah what a prophesy!
what has happened that is worse then 911 everyone thinks it’s so bad rn but the truth is we just whine more
Sheeple drive me nuts. He says there is certainly more pain to come and ppl start cheering and whistling. Wtf
@@AethasArt I'd say that hundreds of thousands of people dying (Americans, Iraqis, Afghanis, etc.) in American-led wars since 9/11 is worse. And that's just the wars... Other bad things include the total tribalising (us-verses-them, 2-sided bullshit) of politics, the ever-increasing encroachment of both government and corporations into your privacy and personal life, and Kayne West... especially Kayne West, haha!
@@napukapu With respect to terrorism, yes. He wasn't talking about pain or tragedy in general, he was speaking *in context* of 9/11 and terrorism.
When something like that happens, it's not a prophesy, it's just inevitable.
Still have my ticket stub, was set for 9/11. Great concert and was much needed that week.
I remember being there, great show and a great message from Maynard.
Hell yeah me too I was there and distinctly remember how some people blew most of what Maynard was saying way out of proportion saying shit like.. "That maybe we as American's deserved what happened that day.." And remember the next day people were calling in on the local radio station and saying.. "Fuck TOOL MAN! I'm burning all my tool albums!" shit like that...WTF!!?? If you ask me I'd say FUCK those people! Let them go jump on the next "New Radio Rock Band" wagon fucking poser's ! Shit man it's just one less dumbass "Hooker With a Penis" we have to deal with at the shows! I fucking love TOOL been a fan since i heard they're first album and will always be till i die! There finally said my peace now fuck off! :)
I was at this show in Grand Rapids MI, the show was originally slated for 9/11/01... being in the arena the night after was a very intense experience... I think most of us were waiting for bombs or jets to drop through the ceiling and I remember this speech from Maynard almost word for word... I'm actually pretty surprised to find it on youtube and that someone caught it in such high quality... very memorable show btw.
No one will ever be able to explain how the 3rd building, Building #7, was pancaked and flattened in under 10 seconds, without taking a hit from a plane. Keep your eyes closed.
linoeleven what building?
WTC Building #7. The third building that fell that day. The one that was not hit by a plane, yet still collapsed into its imprint within 11 seconds. This was about a block and a half away from the Twin Towers. The official explanation is office fires collapsed Building 7, which would make it only the third building in the history of the world to collapse due to fires. (And the other two...? Buildings 1 & 2 a few hours earlier)
linoeleven exactly. I just left the same comment and scrolled down and saw yours.... Building 7 is the biggest smoking gun of an inside job there ever was.
It's quite amazing how the world, the media... just let that one slide. Here's an easy way to think about the whole event...... ok, so terrorists are to blame. Well, what is the ONE weapon we always know terrorists to use? Explosives, right? They're always blowing things up. Here's the funny thing.... NIST did not even investigate the possibility of explosives and fully admit that in their report. So, a building falls down and explosives aren't even a consideration? Before 9/11..... explosives were the ONLY way buildings were ever brought down. To not even entertain that idea shows a careful neglect of the crime scene.
linoeleven ever think that hundreds of pounds of compressed jet fuel and hot engines were "explosive" enough?
Repeat after me:
"Never repeat things other people say.".
never....oh shit!!
everyone has said oh shit. oh shirt
I feel naive. It took me longer than 2 days to figure it out.
All that Maynard said in his speech from "question authority, be unique" to "take those feelings and create something positive" could not have been a better segway into Lateralus. The song really encompasses those statements in such a profound way. Leave it to Maynard to choose his words in a way to be relevant to his music and the flow of the concert. I can't wait to go to a Tool concert because I know that every minute of it will contain importance and meaning.
did you ever go to a concert?
Kinda bummed out by the crowd's reaction at times. It's almost as if they completely missed the point of what he was saying.
As I'm just now discovering this band I'm finding that speaks for most TOOL fans
I love the glee in his voice getting everyone to repeat after him, knowing what the last line was going to be
"2 steps, 5 steps..." Quit talking about your beat signatures!
Jerry Dodge ha ha
Thanks for this It brings back my memories of 9/11-9/13 When I attended this concert with my buddies!
I was at the NYC shows in early October of 2001. They never mentioned ANYTHING about September 11th, except Maynard's "Take what you've been feeling and create something positive..." line. They didn't offer condolences or anything like that. There was no pity. They knew why we were there and they knew they were helping us heal. At the end of the show, they came together and group hugged.
It was exactly what NYC needed.
At 3:09...Maynard calls it!! He goes up even further in my esteem!
I was at this show. Thanks for posting this. I remember when 911 happened, all that emotion i felt those few days before the show. i was 18 and when he gave this speech it was the first comforting words that really made me feel a better. It was probably because it was tool and he was on stage giving a speech through a massive pa system, but it still sunk in and i will always remember what he said about taking emotions good or bad and making something positive from them. words i still live by
"It was the USA that did it."
True story!
awesome that he spoke his mind
2 days after the fact and he has the balls and wisdom to say "it was the USA that did it" - I would imagine it would be hard for someone like Maynard, as people like I do, deal with all those thousands of room temperature IQ's out there screaming "USA! USA!" and "Drop the bomb!" those same ignorant people are then chanting the "Non conformist oath" rofl. Maynard does a good job here of making those people look like stooges while they sit there and yell praises at him lol.
Well said. I wish more people questioned things, but it seems we've been trained to be complacent and ignorant and more people are asleep than awake. Buy, consume, die. One of the major reasons I love and respect Tool so much is, if you listen carefully, this music makes you think and this music makes you feel. So few things achieve that these days.
Very true indeed.
Whether directly or indirectly, yes

I saw them in October of 2001 in Charlotte on the same tour and he said some VERY similar things. i.e. "Take whatever you're feeling and turn it into something positive" I love Tool, every new album is an evolution (even if that evolution/new album takes a decade to occur/be released)

not a lot of people knew ANYTHING around the time of 911, the country was completely ignorant of its governments entanglements all over the world. The US lost its naivety that day when it got a taste of blowback; for Maynard to have the foresight to say this during the HEIGHT of blind patriotism; shows what a genius he is
I got to hear this speech at DEER Creek that year. Chilling times. #ArtSavesLives

true i guess bc i was still a kid i couldn't even think of that haha
Because you don't have to be a genius to know that attacking other countries will cause a counterattack
The non-conformist oath... And they did it. ffs
Well, he tried...
This is from September 12th, 2001 in Grand Rapids Michigan. I was here, amazing show. i remember MJK saying "Take the Non-Conformist's Oath, Repeat after me...." hahahaha I did NOT repeat after him. Although he said "Question authority" which I had already questioned his motives and knew what he was about, so it wouldn't have mattered.

2001, not 2011.
I was at this show and so pissed it had to be postponed a couple days. Tool really stepped up and did the show they were supposed to do in order for people to try to feel normal if just for a couple hours.
I saw them I think in Columbus, OH on that tour. It was pretty soon after 9/11 then too.
When I fist clicked on this, I thought this must be 10,000 Days tour because of the background art, but I think I remember that backdrop from '01, Lateralus tour. Plus, I can't imagine what else he could have been talking about.
10k was 04' 05'
Nope. The pic in the video isn't from the Lateralus tour. I saw them at the Tacoma, WA show and this was not the same stage setup. This image is from the 10K Days tour (or later).
I love how Maynard was mocking the crowd near the end with the "non-conformist oath". Just like in Life of Brian, people think they're individuals because they spout statements like "question authority". But they do so as a group, in order to conform to that group thought. Just like the people in the comment section here; they think they're individuals, but they're really just part of another collective.
The man really is a genius.
Welcome Back Tool Archive. You were missed...
Sweet! Thanks so much.
This lends further to my theory that Tool chose their name as a form of irony
It's not really YOUR theory though, it's literally why they named the band "Tool".
I agree, but the name of the band is *also* a tool.
@@swimssnakeyadventures9127 They named the band Tool because their music is supposed to be a metaphorical tool for your life and the things in it.
I was at the Columbus show too. But I DEFINITELY remember him mentioning something about the U.S. being responsible when the crowd started chanting "USA, USA". That stuck with me. I also remember him changing the lyrics to "fret for your football and fret for your baseball" during Ænema due to all the game cancelations.

End the Fed
END THE FED.
What does the Federal Reserve have to do with this
I know.
The Fed makes it a lot easier for the US government to do a lot of the things it does overseas, like start and fund wars and spreads our influence in a negative way. We shouldn't have bases in Saudi Arabia, and the Fed helps make that happen, encouraging 9/11.
