TOOL's Infamous 1993 Scientology Centre Shows | Maynard James Keenan & David Cross Look Back

  • In 1993 - fresh off the release of their debut EP, 'Opiate,' the year before - TOOL played two shows at the Scientology Centre in Hollywood, California. The concerts have since become the stuff of legend. A young comedian named David Cross first heard about TOOL when he saw an ad for the shows - and not long after, he would welcome singer Maynard James Keenan (fronting a then-fictional band called Puscifer) onto his HBO sketch comedy series 'Mr. Show.' Nearly 30 years later, REVOLVER reunited Cross and Keenan, enlisting the former to interview the latter. In this excerpt from their weird, insightful and hilarious convo, they look back on TOOL's infamous Scientology Centre shows.
Watch the full interview here bit.ly/3HT6IAT and let us know what you think in the comments.
David Cross' new comedy special, 'I'm From the Future,' is out now: bit.ly/3IASo0Y

I love how accessable MJK (and the boys in the band) are these days. They seemed so enigmatic in the past, now there's plenty of videos of them
being regular guys and revealing little parts of themselves. I was always a big fan of the music, now I'm a huge fan of the men making the music. I won't lie though, MJK and all the great things he has done and will do, have me feeling pretty inadequate abt my life. Woulda, coulda and shoulda are a mother fucker. What is ironic is that, ultimately, Scientology supports knowledge of reality (psychic contact with the spirit world). People that attack people socially for no good reason that are a part of Scientology are the ones that get punked for money. The entire church is a punk move against people in pain. They are haters, but they are also upset over not understanding. So yeah, ultimately Maynard is in the right for calling them out. The entire concept of “body thetans” and “going clear” is a reference to psychic mediumship and telepathy. The rest of the doctrine is used to swindle people for money. It’s trashy.

I had a buddy in college write a paper on Scientology and he went on one of those free tours in the Hollywood center. He said before the tour they had made very clear there were rooms and sections of the building that were totally and completely off limits. Pete being Pete, went off trail and walked into one of them room’s… for the sake of time I’ll leave it at that, but he actually got caught, held at gun point, and they basically said he was lucky they were letting him leave. To this day if he even hears about someone being in the vicinity that practices Scientology, he goes into damn near anxiety attack mode and will let it be known he doesn’t want to be in the same room as them. Pete’s my old old friend, you can startle him, sure, but to scare him is a bit more of a challenge. He hears “Scientology “ and you can physically see his wheels start spinning. Off topic, I’ve met Maynard a few times. He was once a part of my uncle’s band Green Jelly/Green Jello (after the getting sued thing).

@@ButterBallTheOpossum eh if you knew Pete you’d know. He’s a genuine searcher. He’s the type to try heroin specifically because he’s been told to never try heroin (just a metaphor, he never went down that road, but you can’t simply tell him what to think, he wants to know why to think it, and in the end possibly find why that thought process is either completely viable or completely false) so they actually made the mistake of stipulation before the tour, at least with him. But two mistakes were made that day. They told the wrong one not to go off trail, and he never believed that going off said trail would ultimately end with a gun in his face by two men in black types. It’s weird though as that particular incident set him on his ending path in life. He had multiple interests and changed majors and minors eleventeen times in college, but he and I actually met in self defense classes when we were like 7 years old. I kept with it and became an instructor and after the military , Pete, being Pete, went to college and wondered through trying to find his own personal love (if you love what you do then it’s not really work, it’s just doing what you love with the added benefit of getting paid to do it) anyway AFTER the Scientology thing, he did graduate, but he went simply with a master’s degree in education, he taught at a high school for awhile in Los Angeles, but wanted to get back into self defense after his altercation with those cult fools in Hollywood. I realize that this description of my idiot friend is getting long so for the sake of time I’ll try to shorten it up, NOW, he certifies civilians from San Diego/Los Angeles/Orange County to carry firearms and also teaches new CCW holder’s “under stress “ training at a very popular Gun Range in Stanton California. He found his way back to self defense/firearm/Wado Ryu (the derivative of Karate we’re both involved in) because of those freaks at the Hollywood Scientology center 20+ years ago. Long winded message? He’s a 3rd degree black belt, trained in Silat knife fighting flow, and certified gun fighter… this highly dangerous person, to this day is STILL scared of Scientology and those who practice it. I am so sorry to go into such great detail, but you said it perfectly. They’re a cult. That’s it and that’s all!

And that's where he's just flat out wrong. Intelligence has literally nothing to do with it. It's about levels of perception and ability to be manipulated/hypnotized. So a totally educated and "otherwise intelligent" person can totally fall prey to these kinds of things, while some slackjawed yokel can see right through it. Those Scientology personality tests are hilarious. The first time I took one it was the "on the street", which is an abridged version to get you in the door.
They handed me the cans and the second "question" (it was actually a statement) was, okay, I want you to think of a person that stresses you out and think about how they make you feel." Then they wiggles some dials and the needle jumped. So the woman giving the test says, "Well, it looks like you felt a lot stress when I asked you that, why do you think that is?"
I laughed, said, "Why does thinking about a person that stresses me out stress me out?" and walked away.

Born into Scientology in Washington DC 1970s.My father was a sperm donor. My mother told me Children's org was created for me because as a single mother she had to bring me on sessions. I'm born " clear" I can remember training sessions with adults. I was made to sit and stare into the trainer's eyes without fidgeting, looking away, smiling, talking or breaking eye contact. Then clay model abstract concepts and my mother chose to never tell me the word " No"There is also a reader needle to show the trailer if youve gotten an emotional response. with the emotional readout, they can tell what topics upset you. Or give you what's called an" engram". Basically a command on a deep instinctive level you are programmed with. This really angered my mother. To this day you will not beat me in a stare-down. Im ice cold ^-^I would do this to authority figures as a child and into my teen yrs.. I thought I was an adult. I attended Montessori school age 3 too and I was hyperlexic. She left Scientology when my mother was about to join sea org. We moved constantly then finally off the grid where I was homeschooled. She was that paranoid. The ridiculousness of the lower-tier stuff is perfect really. Most people stay away and the flakey and mentally ill go into it. Where they can be milked of money and brainwashed.

My mother became a Scientologist within a couple years of the formation of the church. I grew up in a Scientologist house with Scientology posters on the wall and an e-meter on the kitchen table. I did the earliest and lowest levels of Scientology courses. I think it was what $30 can get you and that was $310 first level courses. Even as a kid I could recognize that insane level of b******* going on and my mother who was striving to become clear wasted so much of our family's money that even though I was a middle class kid I grew up lower middle class because of the constant flow of cash from our family to the church. My mom was so deep into it that nothing could have ever pulled her out. She believed in all of it and talked it up among her befuddled neighbors and even the cashiers of the grocery store. She was a member in good standing from around 1960 till her death in 98. One of the longest active members of the Church of all time.

@@franciskhoury4288 there was a big movement starting 20 25 years ago in the Catholic Church to get back to basics especially after the mass was changed from Latin to English. I would say that what you were involved in was a borderline called. I mean all religions are cults by their nature that's not a knock on religious just what the definition of occult is but some of the warning signs is how much impact it has on your daily life and how easy it is to get out of it. Scientology wants their monthly donation no matter whether you're using the facilities and trying to become an operating Satan or not you have to send them a check. It's also well outside of established Christianity which is another reason that it's considered a cold. There are huge issues if you try to leave and you are definitely shunned by everybody who's still involved. It kept us poor my entire childhood so while my mother was taking $1,000 courses we had to eat our lunch through government tokens because we couldn't afford to pay for it. This was in That 70's and 80s and at that point my dad was probably making $45,000 a year and we live pretty cheaply so there should have been plenty of leftover money but they barely even had a bank account. I have nothing but anger and disgust with Scientology and it's sci-fi creator l Ron hubbard. So, when I left it, nobody could do anything to keep me in. I realize that's very UNLIKE Scientology. I wonder what John Lurie's Lounge Lizards ? could have done as they are an instrumental jazz group, though if it was John's band I'm sure he may have added some commentary^^

This was mildly disappointing. Clearly David Cross wasn't at any of those show. I was. There was much to talk about and yes everything about it was weird. The opening act, the Lounge Lizards, appeared to have a public meltdown during their set. The front man was going off on scientology and his bandmates were clearly not on board with his rant. At one point, one of the other guys in the band told him to shut up. In the audience, the atmosphere was tense also. Back then a lot of those shows would draw a crowd that consisted of skinheads on one side and longhairs on the other. It wouldn't take long for brawls to break out. Some guy stage dived (dove?) wearing a motorcycle helmet which only encouraged people in the crowd to beat him on the head as hard as possible until he was finally dragged out, poor guy. The sound was terrible and reverberating cuz of all the glass just like Maynard said. But in spite of all that, it was a pretty awesome set by Tool and I had great time. Probably one of their best early performances.

It was Love Jones who opened the show. I'm the bass player, and we got in trouble a lot in those days. We were getting threatened on both sides of the stage, and our lead singer didn't quite understand that we might get the whole show shut down...not just us getting thrown out. We did get thrown off the premises...BUT, we also got offered our record deal with Zoo Entertainment (Tool's label) in the parking lot. So, it all worked out. Maynard's told this story, in different amounts of detail, a few times and got our name correct. They were always great to us, so he can call us what he wants.

Tool is and always will be one of the greatest bands that ever existed, the fact that I saw them almost front row a few years ago in the bay area for less then a hundred dollars shows you how awesome this band is, they care about the art and the fans its not about greed and money.

By the time I heard of Scientology I was about 17 and had already given up completely on the established "normal' cults like Christianity and Judaism and Hinduism blah blah blah. My immediate reaction was, "oh look, it's the new 1980s self-help version of Jesus LMAO" (I didn't realize then it had already been around for a couple decades).
I understand if unfortunate kids are brought up in that kind of madness beyond their own control, and it's no surprise that it attracts the mentally ill and badly abused, but to this day it astounds me that supposedly sane grown adults, many with fine modern educations and "real" jobs, still fall for it on their own. Any of it, any religion. It's really kind of depressing.

Maynard’s ceiling looks cool AF! Looks like that “gigantradome “ building Tesla designed out by the Joshua tree/ Mesa/ x9 palms area… I went T and had a crystal bowl soundbath and performed a solo classical Bach set in there. The reverberation was a trip, but the electrical aliens did not ignite the space engine… (wait; thought I was on Yelp for a minute

I took the Scientology test out of curiosity and for the kicks, and I recall a good number of the questions being about getting nervous ticks. Do you sometimes / always / never get the shivers / ticks in situation x or y or z. And I mean a strangely high number. As if "Ah, they only get nervous ticks in 4 out of 15 situations so that's OK / weird". They took my answers behind a screen to process through a computer for several minutes, because it was no doubt a complex analysis. They then treated the results as if they were top secret and would only show me a meaningless graph they printed out with a line curving up and down but no defined axes which, I suppose, made it super scientific, while an avuncular guy in a cardigan expressed concern about me having behaviour patterns that apply to every human being in existence but psychopaths.

I remember that show because I was....power-washing the sidewalk at Celebrity Center cus you know I was a dumbass for not only joining Scientology but also joining the Sea Org. I didn't know who was Tool at the time. I was kicked out of Scientology's Sea Org for what they said was attempted suicide but I was actually smoking a cig on the balcony of one of the top floors. The next incident would be in Clearwater, Florida where I was kicked out for bringing a loaded weapon on Scientology property. Which I didn't mind getting kicked out or as they put it declared as a suppressive person. Believe me being on their property worked out for me since Clearwater had no jurisdiction but I did surrender to them and got probation and lol counseling from a Scientologist which was my Uncle. God the horror stories.
