Hey Mike! My names Katie and I’m 12 years old. You have encouraged me to keep practicing my swimming over this summer. I never had swimming lessons either. But my mom and uncle were on the swim team when they were kids. But my mom has a bad knee where it feels like there’s a fist in her knee as some times. So the only one really helping me is my 16 year old big brother. He helped me learn to swim. Thank you for encouraging me so much. Keep up the AMAZING work!!
My swimming career was about 7 years long and at one point I was one of Norway’s best swimmers for my age group, I know this video is old but if anybody is reading this I can say this to anyone who is trying to get better now, swimming is hard. and it takes a lot of practice to get really comfortable doing it. But eventually it becomes as easy as walking. My tips becoming better at freestyle are take it slow, breath with one eye over the surface of the water, strokes shouldn’t be right beneath your chest; your arm should be at a ninety degree angle with your hand flat. And your kicks don’t need to be super fast or slow just make sure that they are comfortable in the background that way you can focus on other things. Those are not tips to be a pro, they are tips for beginners.
I swim competitively and in the ocean, your stroke just starts to fall apart due to the cold. Sometimes in the ocean, one or two breaths head up every now and then can really help correct stroke. Also, to get over cold shock, put you feet in the water for a bit before swimming. This is only needed in ocean because the pool is warm enough. However these tips are good for beginners.

Make sure to be super careful man. I had a friend with me doing basically this in Newport Beach, CA in the Junior Lifeguards program when I was younger. It's called the monster mile. On the day we did it, the water was very cold, a little less than 55 degrees F. My friend had very low body fat, unlike myself with pretty average, so when he did it, something realllly bad happened. According to him, about halfway through the swim when the lifeguard said, "halfway down, halfway to go," he just doesn't remember from then on. When we got to the end of the mile, instead of swimming to shore he started swimming in medium-sized circles. The guards went out and grabbed him and brought him to shore. He was literally purple, and he couldn't speak or really do anything. They wrapped him in towels and put warm sand all around him. The next thing he said he remembers was when he woke up in the hospital covered in burning hot blankets while shivering uncontrollably. Yeah, it cures cancer too -.-
the only problem is that the water is cold
@@cuvius2295 don't believe theres scientific studies to back everything up or ...have a cold shower.
@@rehan8480 just do it don't be a pussy
I used to get cold showers everyday before going to school when I was a kid, you definetely get used to it and it becomes enjoyable

This video got me in to open water distance swiming 3 years ago, and is now an activity that provides a signifacant amout of joy in my life
No way, didnt know we shared the same home town thats so cool
The worst part is when it gets to your balls lol
So True
Mount. Dew I think the other part is worse. That moment when it just barely touches the water... It’s the reason I always try to just dive in if possible.
Very true

An actual entertaining youtuber
I can't believe his wife wasn't crying with laughter when he jumped in. I would've been rolling on the floor.
U will swim more than a mile since the water will put u off course. Looks that up and prepare accordingly
Unless he's swimming against the current (unlikely in a river) he will probably still only swim a mile, he will, _travel_ more than a mile
I’ve done this before myself I didn’t have the extreme reaction you had as I had jumped in the cold water after being in a hot sauna. So I was quite warm when I jumped in. It was extremely refreshing and invigorating.
Heyyy it’s my birthday and I’m watching mike best combination ever!!!
Happy b day man ... 🔥
Thanks bro 🙌
happy birthday!
you have so much motivation and disciplin! you could try the Iron Man challenge!
I'm not finished the video, and I'm DEFINITELY not finished with your videos
But I wanted to say that you're a really big inspiration. I'm definitely on the "average" (Or even below average given my mental illnesses) side of things, and I guess it's really very amazing to see someone actually do these things and the process of it all. Thank you so much.

But he is average
That’s almost too easy though... Took me 5-10 minutes to learn. Butterfly knife tricks would be cool though.
I appreciate that you put the temperature of water in fahrenheit as well thanks
6:55 is when I feel the water in my pool is cold, then my parents just tell me to jump in and it will be fine

He is doing this while I'm here trying to swim 25 meters
tomorrow 26
you are trying to swim 25 meters while i can't swim at all
Ive swam about 2 miles at a go in a little bit less than room temperature sea water but this . This would be crazy hard to do if i dont get used to the water temperature like he did .
I swam about a mile in 22-25 degree seawater against the current and it destroyed me, I could barely move the next day.
On the plus side, swimming back, I nearly didn't have to move how strong the current was
surely one of the best channels out there
4:44 you can literally see his breath 😂😂
You should train for a half marathon.
full marathon*
Euellb1 He should start with a half, then go for a full
I know the feeling of when he first went into the water.
A Canadian lake in March is cold as hell... You can't make a sound, the water is so cold; all you can do is try to breath.
Baby Mike when after he learned how to walk:
Running a marathon in under 2 hours.
im really thankful to my parents who made me learn swimming at 5 years of age. now i’m 16 still swimming 1-4 times per week
Yeah I learned as early as possible (about 4) and I swim whenever I can
I'm from Arbroath, living in Milton Keynes, love this channel!
Ross Edgily is swimming around mainland UK (Not sure if the name is right )
Ironically he is anything but average. In a good way. He is super amazing
My hot water has run out and I’m having THE coldest bath of my life so I’m here for help

Sorry hard
Yes. Everyone swims in very cold rivers in Finland... ? Chill out. Scotland is in northern Europe too my guy.
I think you should try to learn to hand whistle and learn to do bird calls with it
Those starting blocks at that gym’s pool were actually really nice!
