I understand what he meant when he said the ice bathing can help heal our depression and "awaken us to the world". I used to work 2 jobs just earning a good living but was not happy, felt like I'm going through life like an empty shell, not really connected to the world around me. Then one day my friend wanted to go rafting on a river and our raft flip over and I drop in the cold water and could have drown. Then after struggling to get out of the freezing water and making back safely on land, I experience a spiritual awakening. I have never felt so alive. I realize I'm wasting my life away slaving away for riches. So I quit both my jobs and took a year off to explore the world around me, did lots of fishing, camping, and road trips. Now I live a minimalist life style which can afford me more free time to enjoy life because I don't need to earn a lot of money.

@@shakmo6611 depression is being incapable of feeling happiness.
When I feel depression I do not feel the world owns me anything, that's not depression, that's just being immature and entitled.
Depression may be caused by biological reasons ,in my family is a genetical thing, our brains do not produce properly serotonine. We end up requiring medication to get back ourselves.
When depressed I feel empty. I can pretend otherwise, to do not make others worry around me, but inside I feel like a void.
If I feel anger is not against others, is against myself. I do not feel pity about myself because pity means you feel some empathy, what I feel is that I should not be living, to stop being a burden for my family, I do not want them to suffer because I think I am a waste of human being, I rather dissapear totally, but I know that will make them suffer even worse.
Having the medication, working out in the gym, swimming, sleeping properly, winter, eating balanced, all those things give me the serotonine I need, made my thoughts clear because my brain begins to work properly.

I grew up in the interior of BC, Canada. Our worst winters got to -25c. That was rough enough, I can't imagine -50c. I've done my share of steam baths, then jumping into ice cold creeks + rivers. But just going straight into cold water? That's impressive. I'd probably try it once or twice.

I swim in the ocean everyday for 15 to 20 minutes. In the winter--now--it ranges between 14-16 C°, very occasionally down to 13 C°. It's cold, and though I don't get cold shock anymore, the head still aches a bit for the first 3 minutes. I cannot imagine the pain of doing what this guy does.
