I feel like this mechanism could drive a fan, requiring no external power. Another advantage is the fan, once it has spun up would act as a very short flywheel, maintaining momentum on the rollers a little.
It looks like the bottom of the rollers are pretty close to the bottom of the frame, so when it’s on a carpet with his weight on it the rollers grip the carpet
Yes. This video was painfully stupid. Yes, it takes a little while to get used to, but some on - do something thinking. Or look around the internet/UA-cam (!) for some ideas. Duh.
Some tips would have been nice. I think his biggest error in the beginning is putting all his weight in his hands so whole bike moved backwards off the front roller.
1-do not do this on a thick carpet 2-use a wall, doorway or counter to lean against when learning how they work, I know of no one who rides rollers in the middle of a room 3-the front wheel should be centered over the front roller or at the most 1cm behind the front roller center 4-I believe those rollers have some free float to them so they are a bit easier to learn and ride 5-rollers are great for smoothing out your pedaling, if you pedal in squares or have a mashing style the rollers will soon sort that out because you wont be able to ride them. Rollers also teach you to have a light touch on the handlebars and to let the bike steer rather than the riders having a death grip on the bars. 6-most people who try to learn how to ride rollers generally get advise, asking a friend or doing a search and learn in a few minutes. it really is much easier than this video makes it seem.
1 - probably would simplify things yes, but he managed to learn even with that extra problem... so... 2 - I know at least 2 people who do (Mike + the video of them being used in the middle of a garden he showed) 3 - You can see it was in the footage 4 - Eh, I think #1 kinda negates "bit easier" 5 - Seems irrelevant since he used the rollers just fine 6 - Hello, you must be new to Mike Boyd's channel, this is a channel about learning things on your own, both seeing his attempts and being entertained as well as to learn some things about *how to learn* and *not giving up*.
Frankly it looked like he was falling on purpose to me. Never tried the rollers honestly but am very studious in everything related to human motion ...
For anyone watching to learn themselves who is confused as to WHY it kept rolling off: Whenever Mike put most of his weight on the handlebars the force on the front wheel to come off the roller became greater than the minimum force needed to push the rear wheel over the rearmost roller. i.e. the downward force on the front wheel pushed the back wheel off the last roller. Tl;dr: If you're trying this at home, don't lean on the handlebars before you've mounted at least one pedal.
I haven't finished the video yet, but I bought these rollers last night and had the same exact experience. The internet needs more people like you who show themselves struggle
Let me give a piece of advice for any out there wanting to give this a try. There is a much easier way to learn how to ride rollers, first, obtain a small step stool that is about 10 or 12 inches high. Next, put your rollers in between a doorway. This allows you to stand on the step stool and mount the bike, the doorway will allow you to remain vertical and inline as you put one foot into the pedal and begin to pedal, don't worry about clicking in with the other pedal at this point. The primary rule in riding rollers is no sudden swings with the handlebars, they must be dead straight ahead, if you feel you are drifting to one side or the other, a shift in your weight to the opposite side will correct that drift, the handlebars can stay straight. You will soon learn these shifts of weight are quite minute, the main goal is to get to the point of being able to fine tune your cycling technique so as to eliminate any extraneous movement, to be as efficient as possible. I always had my rollers about a foot from a wall to provide security, you could always lean against it in an emergency and I always had my footstool to make mounting a breeze. When you become proficient on rollers there is no better tool to refine your stroke, intervals are the key! One minute on and two minutes off, gradually working up to max effort with a series of cool down intervals. If you can maintain max effort for 1 minute while maintaining form that the rollers demand you will indeed get better, seeing the speedometer hit the mid 40s mph (52-13 gears at that time) for one minute and just trying to maintain the form necessary is indeed a challenge that you will be proud of!
It seems to me like having a target centered in front of you starting out would help tremendously. When I first learned to ride a bike, my parents said, "if you look down, you fall down." So I looked where I was going, not at my feet or the ground I was on. That's just my 2 cents on riding a bike. Look straight ahead.
@@seththeace6217 well i had a guy in class who said he was watching tv while doing this, i cant confirm though. dont you risk being distracted and slide of ?
@@ersetzbar. I'm not saying it's imperative that you always look at a target right in front of you, but it can help starting out. It kinda depends on if it clicks right away or not. Some people don't need it.
You seem to be quite experienced, so quick (dumb) question for you. Are rollers supposed to carry next to no momentum? Just got some...when I stop pedalling, the wheels stop spinning fairly quickly. i.e. I can't coast at all.
agreed ... learn to ride your rollers while it's positioned in a doorway and start pedaling fast; keep your upper body relaxed and stayed focus on a reference point in front of you; before you know it you'll be balanced.
And if you drop to the side, you might get your head pounded on the doorframe. Even if you use a helmet, your neck might get a jolt or your shoulders might get hurt. In certain situations, though, having an open area like Mike did can be more injurious.
It's not that dangerous, he just have to spend X weeks to relearn doing the reverse-bike, then he can do it easily on the first try. It's the fact that it takes X weeks to relearn the reverse-bike, then *another* X weeks to relearn a normal bike that pretty much ensures that he won't bother with any reverse-bike challenges at all; just way too time consuming. If he could learn riding both types interchangeably maybe, but who knows how long it would take to learn those type of reflexes
They kept sliding back when he attempts to mount. Having it on a non slippery surface next to a wall and with a small step makes mounting the rollers 100% easier and faster. I never used one in my life but mounted it first try with these tips.

For the "why does it fall backwards": too much weight on the front wheel, while these rollers are designed to be steady on the rear wheel. In fact, learning with the electric bike without using the motor would have been easier I think! (Thanks for the video :))
Leaning is not the real problem. The front roller needs to be exactly below the front axle. He's making it unnecessarily hard. The roller should be adjustable. I never had this problem with mine.

You can’t hear the rollers burnin a hole in that shite rug? You can’t feel the ridiculous amount of resistance keeping the rollers from turning? As soon as you get on, you’re pressing the whole lot down in to the carpet and making even more drag. Smh.
I think the bigger problem was that he tried riding it while standing/ pushing on the front of the bike without pushing enough on the back of the bike. That's why the bike keeped jumping out of the rollers
If the rollers were any closer, or he was, than he would ride over the roller, and trash his studio. The point of the front roller is that it's supposed to be quite far from your bike so that when you do ride, you don't overpower it and speed off. The length of your wheel and the roller and your speed all balance out. If your length between the roller and bike were closer, you'd overpower it, making the bike roller redundant.
So, there's pros/cons to both: (by the way, your front tire is supposed to be nearly centered above the front roller, hence the bike slipping off the back) The stationary trainers have adjustable resistance on-the-fly, and honestly are not that hard to set up. Also, you're supposed to put a riser block on the front wheel; TADA! bike is level now... "Some" rollers have resistance, most have none. I have never seen one adjustable on-the-fly. They are quite tricky to learn, but not bad. Rollers take up A LOT of space.
I laughed a lot watching this. I just bought one of these. Based on my experience I'd recommend setting the roller close to a wall so you can hold to it when losing balance. It's pretty straightforward afterwards.
I feel bad for laughing everytime he falls but damn, this was entertaining to watch! Was waiting for a clip of him getting off the rollers without falling though.

Get it off the carpet. It’s sliding. It’s like a physics problem.
I think the bigger problem was that he tried riding it while standing/ pushing on the front of the bike without pushing enough on the back of the bike. That's why the bike keeped jumping out of the rollers

The reason he kept falling back to start is because the front spinner was too far out. It needed to be closer together under the center of the wheel
Alex Murray He also was simply not committing to it or balancing properly at first until it clicked for him
Is that how it's meant to be? because intuitively i feel that it should be farther out to make the bike want to settle down in between the rollers
Gigaguenther That defeats the purpose of the rollers in the first place, no?
no its cause he was leaning forward lol the roller was fine.

The mounted spinners come with a slotted box for the front wheel to make it level
Yeah I got one and and I thought he was being really stupid
So, there's pros/cons to both: (by the way, your front tire is supposed to be nearly centered above the front roller, hence the bike slipping off the back)
The stationary trainers have adjustable resistance on-the-fly, and honestly are not that hard to set up.

When you first start, set these up in a doorway. That way you have something to lean on when you tip to the sides. However, falling off between a doorway is pretty messy so be careful. It teaches you to spin smoothly and accurately. You'll know if you spin poorly because you'll start bouncing and fall off.
