Is the liftoff important? Yeah, duh!

  • Seminar Dec 4th at 10am on Zoom. Covering the liftoff, hand out, accepting the weight and "setting" the shoulders, and final inhalation. This is ONLY important if you care to do your BEST. It isn't nearly as crucial at sub max efforts and MICKEY MOUSE WEIGHT. But when it's at your red line, it matters as much as anything (everything) else!

Good video JM, unracking the bar is where i struggle the most with my bench. It feels like the tightness is lost the second i try to pull it out - almost as my scapula is "unfolding" if that makes sense.
I've watched countless videos from you and Dave tate on this, and how you should pull the bar straight out and do your best not to fumble too much as it is force that can be used for pressing the weight instead. But i do struggle with it once i get to a considerable 90%+ of my training max.
Hope you release more stuff covering the bench press in the future - you're a great teacher and i just wish i had you teaching me math in school, maybe i would be interested in learning then.

Hey JM, I was wondering if you would want do a video or maybe a video series on some of the big topics right now like volume, training splits, and what you think of RPE. What's the fastest way for a novice to build a base. I think a lot of people would like to know your thoughts on things like that. I certainly would.

What do you think about the Mike McDonald Tricep extensions he use to do? Did you ever use a bent bar like he did? Last question! Do you have a gym where you give instructions?

Hey JM what kinda tips do you have for people who train alone and have no option for having a lift off for max effort days?

Hey JM, I hope you're doing well. With the bench press, should we train with the same amount of arch we would use in comp or would we grow more muscle with only a slight arch. Thanks!

For muscle mass and development the competition bench form is sun-par. It gives MAXIMUM leverage advantage. A poor leverage is better for muscle growth to make the muscle work harder precisely BECAUSE it is poor. Do things the hard way to grow. It also allows for lighter weights to be used in training again because of leverage disadvantage. That conflicts with EGO though!

JM it's been nearly 2 years since EliteFTS uploaded your 6-rep tricep workout on their channel - have you been able to apply this information to more lifters and learn more about it? Interested to hear anything new.

I have been using this since then. It has served me well. Only my most staunch athletes have the mental toughness to do it regularly. But they are young and resiliant and need it LEAST! I train them sparingly if at all this way because their time is better suited in normal strength work. They DO get their chance with it when focusing on connective tissue enhancement ESPECIALLY AFTER INJURY OR SURGERY. I have two (one in town and one by video session) that will get a taste of this next month! If their physical therapist clears them for regular exercise. They also get my 3 second burst tendon work which I will outline in a seminar in January. I'll intersperse it. It incorporates the latest research findings into a practical inter-program year-round schedule. I did WAY WAY too long of holds in my tendon work. But that was over two decades ago! I did the best I knew how to do. 3 second bursts is as good as 60 seconds or more! But the load is surprisingly HIGH! Any way, I'm sorry I have to tell you that few people in the GP have had the need plus the mental stamina to give me anything noteworthy to report. What can you tell me? I still love it.
