  • When discussing Osteoporosis treatment, your physician will most likely prescribe some medications. With the different drugs out there, how do you know which one to take? Is it safe if you have other medical conditions? What are the long-term side effects? Which is a better brand? And the list goes on.
Today, I have someone who will answer your questions about Osteoporosis medications to put your mind at ease.
Dr. R. Keith McCormick is a chiropractic physician specializing in the management of patients with osteoporosis. He is the author of the recently released book Great Bones: Taking Control of Your Osteoporosis and The Whole Body Approach to Osteoporosis.
Sports have always played a vital part in Dr. McCormick’s life. He is the former U.S. record holder for the most points scored in a pentathlon competition. Dr. McCormick continues to compete in triathlons of all distances and has completed six Ironman competitions, five of them after recovering from multiple osteoporosis-related fractures.
So, if you have questions about Osteoporosis medications, listen to this informative episode of the Happy Bones, Happy Life podcast!
“I always talk about medications as being a short-term solution to a long-term issue. And that is, when you're taking the medications, all that time you're (also) doing things to improve your overall bone health-your diet and supplements, all that.” - Dr. R. Keith McCormick

Thank you Margie and Dr. McCormick. The summit and podcasts are amazing and so helpful. I plan to get both books to help with my journey and will share with my functional doctor who is helping me with my root causes. My Primary Doctor feels I should take Fosamax medicine for 5 years and reevaluate. I am not taking any meds right now. DXA was -2.8 four years ago and -2.5 2 years ago. I’m working hard to improve overall health and my bones. Thank you.

That's very interesting, thank you. I was told by my rheumatologist yesterday that the increase in my TBS score over 14 months was not of any significance. My DEXA had deteriorated by 4.9% in that timeframe. Hormones were not an option and I should take bisphosphonates or "the tension between her and I" won't improve!!

These books are my guide in my journey towards better bones. I have severe osteoporosis and I have some clarity of which way to go with the help of this. Showed it to my endocrinologist, she's getting it as a reference book. Thank you Dr. Mc Cormick for this very comprehensive book on osteoporosis ❤

Thank you for sharing. I am so happy to hear about your endocrinologist. That was one of Dr. McCormick’s goals - to do the research and educate the medical community. Good luck on your journey to stronger bones!

Thanks for posting this. It's very useful, however, it would have been helpful to mention the ages of the the people who sent in questions. The answers might have been qualified by the approach based on age. My mother is over 90 and was given Prolia about a year ago. They (UK NHS) haven't mentioned ever coming off it, or changing meds so, we assume they expect her to stay on it indefinitely.

If medication stops osteolclasts from dissolving bone that is bad, and then you allow the osteoblasts to continue to laydown new bone, won't that be very dangerous? The new bone is layed down over weaken or bad bones that were not removed y the osteoclasts. So, a fracture is probably insured. You wouldn't put on a new deck over a rotten base. Isn't that what these medicines do?

I had my first prolia injection Dec2022 per an orthopedic doctor's prescription (tscore -2.7 spine),, after that I did some researches, I decided at my appointment for second injection (May2023) to stop. My Obgen doctor prescribed Celvista Ive been taking it up until now, not sure how much it would help. Ive been exercising constantly, not so much supplement, I will be taking bone density test next week.

Is it possible to do Forteo for 2 years and then stop? My Dr is planning to add Prolia after Forteo. I would prefer not to do Prolia.
