Eldritch Castle Kickstarter: www.kickstarter.com/projects/1506416234/eldritch-castle-5e-module-with-animated-dungeon-rooms After playing this encounter (and others during campaigns), I really think the gnolls' Rampage feature was overvalued by designers. It would be a cool feature for a character though. Actually the ogre (brute) and lycanthrope (werebear) in Monstrous Heroes have a similar Rampage feature, and it's great for a player-character.
I know it would be insanely monotonous to run, but I'd love to see your interperitation of a city defense against something like an Ancient Red Dragon or Tarrasque or the like. 200 guards, 20 veterans, and some static seige weapons, along with a few other wildcards facing off against a gargantuan threat.
I'll actually run something very similar for my party tomorrow. Chaos horde vanguard descending on a small town, Warlord riding a Young Dragon, Abjurer, one Monster (haven't picked yet), 1 cannon, 10 mounted veterans, 14 veterans on foot, 40 bandits, 5 thugs. Party has about 10 veterans, a few monsters and 5 Ogre mercenaries as well as an ironclad airship with cannons
Here's one for you: Yeenoghu + several Gnolls VS Baphomet + several minoturs (details your choice) There's a section of the Underdark called The Labirynth and I recently learnt that cults of both demon lords use them as hunting ground and have almost like a low key 'turf war', almost like 2 street gangs.
Man, it is insane how much you are keeping up with. Not sure which is better for you, but I love seeing these team match ups of little guys (and less than little guys). While I enjoy the 1 v 1's, seeing how each monster works as a part of a group gives them so much more depth and makes the battles so much more interesting.
Gnolls are my favourite! My typical gnoll war band usually consist of the following: - 12 hyenas - 8 gnoll witherlings - 4 gnoll warriors - 4 gnoll hunters - 2 gnoll flesh gnawers - 1 gnoll pack lord, fang of yeenoghu or flind, depending on my party's strength
I wonder why they gave lizardfolk two attacks but the gnolls only have 1. Both are same CR, same AC, same hit points but clearly the ones with double attack is going to be the one who wins
After playing this encounter (and campaign encoutners), I really think the gnolls' Rampage feature was overvalued by designers. It would be a cool feature for a character though. The reason is becouse it just another thing that just sucks. About base monster design. Monsters having roles in battle in 4e, pathfinder 2e etc. Makes it so unique abilites are weighted better vs a almost none ability somehow being seen as the same as double the damage output.
@@LoarvicLoarvic yeah... problem is it's a conditional trait, which if it goes off, it's effectively just a second attack. So why not just give them a multi attack anyways... maybe they thought it would then be identical as the lizardfolk.
Dope!! Hyped for this one. As much as I love your narrations and original content, can understand why you would like to create actual prouct as well. Will support with views at least either way, VERY excited to get in to this one here. Thank you Esper!
I like seeing the creatures stat blocks at the beginning. You normally do it, just not this time. Since we can pause you only have to show each for a couple of seconds. Just my opinion.
I actually had initially intended to do something like that, but changed my mind last minute. Thanks for letting me know, I'll see about putting that back in.
All of the lizardfolk rushing gnoll 3 after almost everyone else has been dealt with has similar energy to that one scene from Jojo where Narancia and the boys are just kicking the shit out of this random guy.
This is perfect. I have a gnolls vs lizardfolk war going on in the swamp region my players have just entered, and they'll probably have to pick a side at some point. I like the idea of the violet savagery of the gnolls vs the ritualistic savagery and shamanism of the lizardfolk
This was incredibly cool. Great to see some ideas on how packs of enemies might attack based on their abilities. Also, I had a noob epiphany moment during this. I have not been, but I should be using half-cover when a target is behind another. It seems so obvious once I see it, and I just never thought of it in my games these last few years. Thanks for the great video!
The situation shows us why Conjure Animals is (was) so overpowered - the shaman actually tripped the balance of one side. Now imagine if they decided to drown gnolls in giant lizards or giant poisonous snakes instead.
Yeah definitely mage diff. Conjure Animals and Heat Metal did a lot here (true summoning a single creature is worse than the other options you mentioned but still managed to block the choke point and prevent the gnolls from using their numbers advantage with the hyenas), while the Gnoll Warlock kind of wasted one of her two spell slots.
Could you do one where a group of mindflayers and an elder brain are assailing a dragon and its minions in the hopes of making it an elderbrain dragon? I feel like that could be pretty spicy.
Another important thing to note here is that it looks like the gnolls have a significant ranged advantage. Not only in the range itself, but also damage. If they spread out and focus-fired the render, perhaps they could've done it?
Oh man this was a stomp! This was still a super interesting fight nonetheless! I've been liking these 'evil faction vs evil faction' fights. I'd love to see an 'evil vs good' kind of battle in the future. Maybe the town militia defending against a goblin invasion trying to buy time for the townsfolk to escape?
Recommend weaving the outcome of these stand-alone encounters into a larger tapestry of encounters. The knoll warlock could be happened upon by the group of guards who defeated the dire wolves and undead. The spontaneous beginning of a cool story.
I'd like to see the warlock fight a small number of lizardfolk. As a continuation, the Warlock retreated, regained its spell slots and fights a smaller hunting party of lizardfolk. Maybe give the warlock a few hyenas or other types of gnolls as re-enforcements? Also, I'd love to see a Blue or Red Dragon Wyrmling vs a Manticore. A wyrmling trying to strike out on its own and find its first lair vies for control of a territory claimed by a manticore!
Any thoughts on minion monsters from Flee Mortals? Having a large group that can die to one hit could make large scale battles more feasible. Anyways loved this one keep up the amazing work!
If you do a rematch, I would love to see some witherlings instead of hyenas as the chaff and a flind instead of the warlock for the elite unit on the gnoll side. For the scalykind, perhaps a Lizard king (lizardfolk equivalent of a cambion) instead of the shaman, a blackscale lizardfolk instead of the render, and a poisondusk lizardfolk archer instead of the two giant lizards as the support? There's a lot of options for both monstrous humanoid factions to field so you could run battles between them for many parts. P.S. A map with some water on it would let the lizards take advantage of their swim speeds. Gnolls got off easy fighting them in an entirely terrestrial environment.
Something I want to point out that I think really shows in this battle is that because of the very nature of probability, there's a 50/50 chance that a 20 sided die will land either above a 10 or below a ten. When you're playing turned based battles, its very likely that one side constantly get above 10 rolls while the other below 10 rolls. Luck was really not on the side of the knolls today.
These videos are so cool man! I love getting to see the tactics you put into play pitting momsters against each other. Can i request that you make a video about how a Drider would combat a foe or group of foes? Id love to watch more videos of tactics for our spidery friends, and i think Driders could be a cool topic! Take care and ill enjoy your content even if you dont cover Driders :)
That's not how Armor of Agathys works. If you lose or replace the temporary hit points, the spell no longer does damage. It only does damage with the temporary hit points you gain from the spell, not all temporary hit points.
Lizardfolk tend to be practical, and there's already a pile of meat. I could see the Gnoll Warlock surviving by surrendering and offering to serve the lizardfolk tribe until she can buy her freedom, and then all of them proceeding to feast on the fallen gnolls.
I know you mentioned this before, but I wanted to ask because I'm gonna be DMing my own campaign soon: what is the VTT that you're using? I like the look of it and I am looking at all options! Thanks in advance for your help!
How about some goblins or kobolds trying to travel through / set up in a marsh, and having to push out the local tribe of Bullywugs? Or a tribe of orcs going toe to toe against a tribe of bugbears? (My favorite depiction of bugbears comes from “Ultimate Bestiary Revenge of the Horde” where they’re a highly spiritual culture of headhunters)

The Kalaraq Quori would be at a disadvantage but Incorporeal Movement lets it try avoiding stuff and soul binding should prevent the star spawn coming back
Do up some sort of gladiator style fight. Maybe a bunch of low CR melee creatures or a group of 1st level fighters against some monster or higher level warrior who's the champion of the arena.

The fleeing "coward" might return with reinforcements. It's not worth it. And by the way, gnolls are genocidal maniacs warped with a power of a demon lord. They aren't known to surrender. Though I think it would be interesting at look to this last stand.

Hmm. The Gnome Warlock is purportedly 5th level with the Fiend patron. That means it has access to Fireball and 2 spell slots of lvl 3. Why did the Warlock not Fireball the clumped lizardfolk on its first action? Then move 30' away from surviving lizards. And then again on Round 2 if there's anything left. That would have been more effective.
can you cast Armor of Agathys level 1 - abjuration Casting Time: Bonus Action Range: Self Components: V, S, M (a shard of blue glass) Duration: 1 hour Protective magical frost surrounds you. You gain 5 Temporary Hit Points. If a creature hits you with a melee attack roll before the spell ends, the creature takes 5 Cold damage. The spell ends early if you have no Temporary Hit Points. Why did the Warlock not Fireball the clumped lizardfolk on its first action? Then move 30' away from surviving lizards. And then again on Round 2 if there's anything left. That would have been more effective.
Slipped away I think roll d 1d4 on a 3 she escape but took damage on a 4 she escape without damage all else fails and is vanquished
Curious why, you said they have pact tactics, but then never gave the gnolls advantage on their rolls. Am I missing something.
The hyenas had pack tactics, but they died before it came into play, gnolls do not have pack tactics without homebrew.

Hmm... Thought She would try to heroic solo the Lizards with the Agathys and Pact combo, but than he calls it, sadge.
