Always happy when Esper drops a video, especially Monster Melee or Brotherhood. The Scarred Champion's final hit should have been a crit on 19 though and he may have taken out the rhino.
@@esperthebard I feel the pain. I do a lot of solo D&D and always realize after a battle that I missed something that may have changed the outcome. It's all part of the fun of fictional skirmishes.
I love it. How about doing a dungeon invasion? A horde of goblins, hobgoblins, trained dire wolfs and bugbears want to overtake a dungeon and make it their base. Inside the dungeon are monsters, like a roper, gelatinous cube, stirges, a troll, etc, that must be taken out. There can also be environmental hazards, like an underground lake filled with quippers. Will the invaders be able to clear the territory?
I love this series; they are always so much fun. Sometimes the Rolls though are just so frustrating just like a real D&D game :) Great work Esper been looking forward to another Brotherhood of Fjarlstead video that series was fantastic, and they are just sitting out there in the wilds healing.
the champion was probably kind of a jerk. Let the success of the fame and glory go to his head. Maybe even said something mean to the tyro right before the gates opened. The wounded champion looked over to the Tyro and screamed "why aren't you helping me!" as he fended off attacks after attacks from the rhino. Maybe it was time for a new champion the tyro thought to himself
There was an episode of "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" (I think it was episode six) when the gladiators Spartacus and Crixus went up against a scarred, hideous giant that was legendary for his prowess in the arena and won. That would be a cool battle to reenact in D&D! Love this Monster Melee series! Keep it up!
I'd love to see you turn the gladiator into a recurring character, have him come back as a champion himself (alongside the scarred champion since he should have crit with that nat 19 at the end) and the gladiators they've trained. Maybe have them called on as warriors during a large scale battle. Would be interesting
YES! I AM ENTERTAINED! Stop yelling at me Russel Crowe :) That was so much fun. Music was perfect. Character were great. Who'd of thunk you'd ever hear someone do the perfect injured rhino. That first skewering was gruesome. Then an epic hit from that javelin. The double sword strike. Don't forget a bolas :) That ending!!! Even made room for a sequel with this gladiator master, perfect!
Reminder, colosseums have a cleric who's god gives them infinite resurrection. But he is under an oath to only use it for entertainers. There is a loophole however he can go with an all Bard adventurer party and technically not break the oath. Bottom line this fight can keep rematching and be canon if you the viewer ask.
This was an especially awesome battle If you think you can get away with it maybe its time to remind everyone of the savagery of the kobolds goblins orcs and gnoles
I like to think that the scarred champion was like a mentor to the surviving gladiator. The rhyno's horn is this man's first trophy from his first successful fight. Perhaps he can fight his way to freedom. But for now, he has a wild story to tell.
I have an interesting fight you can recreate. In the book series Ranger's Apprentice, there's a scene where a single knight has to duel two opponents to the death back to back. He fights the first one, who's using a shield and flail, then has about an hour (short rest) before fighting the other one who uses a sword and shield. There's a duel earlier in the series where a Ranger, armed with just a longbow and his arrows, duels a knight who's on horseback using a lance and broadsword. Both made for interesting scenes in the story.
It's strange to me that the creature that moves is not what provokes opportunity attacks. Also anecdotally, if I had a thrown attack with a marginal chance to hit, throwing at the rhino makes a whole lot more sense.
Good fight, though I think the crowd would be a tad bit upset at the victor for never engaging directly, although his masterful nat-20 dodge may have made up for unwillingness to engage in melee. Next time he gets to fight with two daggers 😁
I don’t know about the 2024 rules but if the rhino moves with the rider on it, isn’t that considered forced movement and therefore the rider can not be targeted by opportunity attacks?

Oh man, good catch! It's so hard to remember everything in these fights!

Honestly, I think that this particular mistake gave us a better story overall.
we want more BROTHERHOOD OF FJARLSTED
The gladiator had improved critical and his last hit was a 19 but you forgot to make it a critical

This is the only way I’m willing to interact with that movie. So cool.
I am at this point fully convinced that Esper launched this series to showcase his range of agonised screams and monster snurls. I'm sure of it
For a monster melee idea base on films, how about the classic Sam vs Shelob? Something like 1 or 2 halflings NPC against a giant spider.
One of my favorite series on UA-cam, thank you for doing these!
edit *this NEEDS a rematch!*

I have plans for another one!
Awesome had me on edge of my seat ! Definitely one of my favorite melees
Thank you! I also think this was one of the best so far.
a shame that you forgot the crit on 19 on the gladiator on his last attack, but it was a great video!
That Tyro probably cost the scarred champion his life. If he had just attacked and hit, even with the dagger that could have done it
Yes. He was literally running around and avoiding everything.
He took zero damage in the whole scenario.

The Champ would have survived with the improved critical. Cool battle though:)

Edit .. high-level wizard demigod / vs Demon . That way we don't use the Lords of the rings reference.

These are awesome, keep up the great work.
Since you're a fan of the Odyssey, why don't you recreate the cyclops vs the soldiers in his cave after he blocks the door with a large boulder!
This was an especially awesome battle

13th warrior, Vikings vs Werebear !
or 10 viking thugs versus a troll.
That was fun. I enjoy these video drops. They inspire my own game, Esper.

Map maker: Czepeku
Esper: SEPPUKU 🗡🛐🩸
What a fun way to start a morning! 💯
Another great combat demonstration.
That was good. ❤ I need to know how the Brotherhood are doing. 😢
a flanking maneuver would have changed the tides for the gladiators. That was fun.
UA-camr vs the algorithm - clash of the titans! Who will win? Can the crowd make a difference? Who knows!
Also the battles in the first gladiator specifically the chariots or the tigers
Or from the mocie 300
Well done I enjoyed that.
The rhino rolled a 6 to strike the scarred rider three times. Those dice were being very temperamental in this bout. XD
It's strange to me that the creature that moves is not what provokes opportunity attacks.

I loved the movie! Also it would have been cool if you gave the rider javalins and throwing axes
You should test the waters with a one rules dnd monster melee. It’d be cool to see some weapon mastery
Good fight, though I think the crowd would be a tad bit upset at the victor for never engaging directly, although his masterful nat-20 dodge may have made up for unwillingness to engage in melee. Next time he gets to fight with two daggers 😁
Great video!
What about Conan Vs. Evil Sorcerer in a mirror room?
Good idea taking some inspiration from shows once and a whyll!
Very cool.
Great game!! Thank you so much for your dedication to MONSTER MELEE!!!
Poor champion can’t get a crit.
The folks rolling up the stats on the rhino are NOT familiar with rhino skin. It's got a WAY higher AC than 11!
Fun scenario!
MONSTER MELEE!!

Another gladiatorial scene. Wonderwoman and Barda vs the female furies. One of my favorite scenes.

Golem The Rhinoceros.
Epic!
BOLAS kkkkk using your balls as weapons is hardcore
🎉👏🏻
Should have attacked the rhino first. Easier to hit and fewer hp
Ché-pekku
Love everything. Just want you know the correct pronunciation. Respect ❤
