12:09 hey I'm back again. Doesn't that mean you can take one level in monk and the rest rogue to make a build that doubles up on sneak attack with 3d6 sneak attack at level six as long you take a species with finesse natural weapons like aracokra?
This Is my first comment. I'm an italian guy, but I followed recently elections. I'm really happy to see a youtuber talk a little bit about it and about the current feelings of a lot of people even though it Is not his main topics, and to do It with such love and respect. We need more people like you ❤
Couldn't agree more. I was nervous when he brought it up, but I was very impressed by how empathetic and respectful you were to all sides. I feel motivated to do my part to keep the comment section positive and uplifting!
Great build as always! But a special thanks today for your final thoughts. Even though you know it might cost you some viewers, you are trying to use your reach to make this world a better place. It's hard to find the right words sometimes, and I'm sure there are some people who think you should stick to Dnd content rather than speaking out politically, but you get the highest praise from me for having the courage to speak your mind!
Thank you, dear Colby, for being as open and honest as possible about our current state in this country. I applaud your tact and diplomacy with your words, along with this fantastic and lovely build you did today. I have done close to 20 of your builds, just for fun, as I typically DM. And your Gen Z son editor can continue the hilarious outtakes! XD
Hey Colby. Just wanted to say I really appreciated hearing your thoughts at the end. As one of the despondent / angry / scared people you mentioned, your words are an important reminder to keep our channels of communication open and not lose faith in humanity. Thank you for being an incredible human being (oh, and the builds are cool, too).
Small error here. Vex doesn't just give you blanket advantage on your next attack. It gives you advantage on your next attack against the target you hit with the Vex weapon (if made before the end of your next turn). Thus if that target dies before the start of your next turn you would not have advantage on your next attack unless it was coming from somewhere else.
I appreciate you taking the risk and using your platform to get the word out and saying some very important things. We love you Colby. Great video as usual
I absolutely love your channel, and it is always a highlight of my week every week. As someone who was happy with how the election turned out, I am still extremely thankful for your take at the end. We may not agree on everything, but if more people everywhere had your posture and heart for people, the world would be a much better place. Thank you for all that you do!
You could consider going Way of the Elements monk with this build instead of Mercy! Once you get your fly speed you can hover above an enemy with your extended reach and attempt to pull them closer to you (directly up) on every single attack, leading to an additional 1d6 fall damage every time it works! And with the grappler feat you can still make your attacks from range without the usual disadvantage from the enemy being prone! Or since you have 4 limbs you could even attempt to grapple 4 different creatures and then use your absurd movement to fly as high as you can before dropping all of them at once!
Colby - your build is top notch as always - and although I imagine I would probably vote the same way as you given the chance, we all need to hear your message at the end - thank you!!
34:26 - Assuming you have grappler, this now lets you run up walls with a grappled target, let them go, land safely yourself thanks to slowfall and watch them take 6d6 damage and fall prone.
@@GeinerFonsecaYup, raw you can double dip the fall damage by dropping them just before you complete your move. Then dropping onto them, which procs a DC15 Dex save. If they fail, you take your fall damage and split it between you. But you can reduce that damage to zero with the monk's slow fall. So, by RAW, that just leaves them taking the other half of the damage and you standing by them ready to do it again. You can amplify this by being a tabaxi open hand monk. Which eventually gets the ability to use step of the wind after any other BA you do. So you can feline agility and drop them multiple times, with how much movement you get.
Conditions remain the same in 5.14 tied grapples. So on a tie for a grapple attempt they are not grappled but when attempting to escape a grapple a tied check is a failed escape attempt
Thank you for you're final thoughts Colby. I... needed to hear these words. I hope more people learn to follow your lead on this. It helped me feel... just a little better about our current situation.
I love grappler builds, they are so fun, makes me feel like a pro wrestiling fighter. but Just a fix: the grappler feat let you grapple with the damage only on the Attack Action, not on flurry of blows. On flurry, you would have to choose between damage or grapple.
Right - we'd need to unarmed strike with our action - not too big a change - we've got 3 attacks with our action after level 5, one of which can be an unarmed strike.
I just had a really dark vision of a D&D/Bug's Life crossover event... a pack of Thri-Kreen grapplers taking "tribute" from villages in their path. Yikes!
I hope you are able to see this Colby. I have been a fan of your channel since day one. Your closing thoughts on recent political events are very welcome. I hate how galvanizing politics has become. I hope that this country can come back together, focus, and ultimately agree on core values and freedoms once more. I personally believe much of the fallout and contention has resulted in a turning away from God. I fear that if we don’t turn ourselves willingly, we will be humbled to do so. Unfortunately that tends to imply a lot of pain. God Bless America. In God may we trust AGAIN!
I'm playing a Goliath Monk grappler build in our first 2024 phb campaign. I dip fighter for weapon masteries, mostly using thrown weapons like hand axes and daggers for free opening up the hand to grapple with. Although I also use the club as a light weapon with an actual interesting weapon mastery of slow, which I combo with frost Goliath to stack slowing effects. I will be going warrior of the open fist to sometimes push or knock prone enemies and free step of the winds later. I think the free step of the wind open fist gets is being very underrated. The push is also good for me since I took Farmer background for the tough origin feat due to being the party's default tank.
For a grappling build, I would have thought that the way of the four elements would be ideal for the reach. Grapple and keep your enemy out of range of counterattacking, forcing them to use their turn to escape. Then again, I understand that you are a "slave to the spreadsheet".
@@DnDDeepDiveThe reason they probably say that is that the reach function has the same wording issue as Bugbear's long limbed ability. Which is to say that said reach can be interpreted as only functioning during the attack, which would mean that you could indeed start a grapple. But it would then instantly end as you lose that reach and are no longer in range of said target anymore. Most DMs will potentially rule it differently, but the RAW means it's not going to be a consistent thing to rely on.
@@DnDDeepDive Damn shame. Narratively, it makes a ton of sense, and if D&D is going for that LastAirBender vibe with it, then this should be possible given how many times that was done in the show.
I knew that guy Nick would come back again soon. Also, I'll mention that if your campaign will go to level 20, you may want to consider postponing fighter 4 until character level 19. That way, you can use the feat to get an epic boon. Then, at level 20, you take monk level 16, allowing you to get a SECOND epic boon! I realize this consideration will only apply to a fraction of D&D groups, but for those in that category, make good use of it.
Hey Colby, love this build! However, I would like to say, deflect attack should not be sleeped upon. With one DP, it does up to 2 martial arts die + dex damage (without advantage), while spending the DP on FOB does one more attack which is only one martial art die+dex, though potentially with advantage. Since for this build, we can drag one melee enermy away and kind of force them to attack us, assuming one or two procs per combat (especially at later levels, where we have excess DP) shoulnd't be too outrageous.
For contested checks, ties mean the situation doesn't change. So for grappling, a tie would go to the "grapple-ee" if the grapple is being initiated. If the "grapple-ee" is trying to break free, a tie goes to the grappler 🤓
I have this image in mind of a Hill Tumble Goliath Grappler feat attack that in one strike is able to grapple, deal damage and make the target prone: and I can't not see a Chokeslam by the Undertaker there. Sure, let's add Menacing Attack as well, seems appropriate.
Yesterday I made a bugbear element monk. I just built him to level 12. He has a twenty foot unarmed strike range. Her can hit or grapple anything large or smaller in a forty foot area. I don't know about the math, but i think it's cool.
Minor Nitpick -- in both written guide and video you mention starting off the turn with a flurry of blows to trigger the grappler feat and later on mention a possible tactic of doing a second (vex) wapon attack instead of your unarmed strike with your attack action if the grapple failed. Unfortunately, the grappler feat requires you to trigger it using the attack action on your turn meaning, you can't do it with flurry blows. Since unarmed strikes from flurry of blows and your main attack are essentially the same, its not a big deal -- but it does mean no 2nd weapon attack as a potential tactic in response to a failed grapple and does require you to time things a little differently (attack -> Flurry rather than vice versa). Without Vex, The chance of of having advantage on your attacks relying solely on grapple is more like 36%, which means the 75% attacks having advantage is a bit inflated - in truth its less than 50%
15:43 I think it is just slightly misspeaking, but Colby says 2 Focus points per Monk level, and it is 2 Focus points here at Monk 2 because it is 1 per Monk level. Doesn't affect the build.
Monk is awesome now! I have been testing the damage of a Tortle Strength-Monk using a greatsword with GWM, and after the attacks you can stow the sword and start punching things! A couple levels of berserker turns the damage up to 11, so much so that I have not been able to make a better sustained damage built since the new PHB (excluding cheater face CME)
"Grappling and Shovelling" I might have to modify this build into a Warforged with a Rune Knight subclass for fighter, and play him up like Devestator from Transformers (original), where he's just using his massive shovel/excavator arm to fling people around.
I tried a Monk grappler in 5th edition, and it was just so bad. So glad to see it's been improved! Also I really appreciate your comments on the election. The world is going to be a far worse place in 2025, but we need to be allies to those who need it most.
Heya fellow Monk enjoyer! Grappling totally rocks but as the DM it is definitely OP sometimes lol. Out of curiosity why do you think the world will be a worse place in 2025? I was hoping our economy could start to see a turn to the right direction but is there something in particular you’re thinking of?
Not to dump on my favorite bug boy but if you wanted to grapple the big stuff you could also start as a duergar dwarf, they get enlarge reduce which you could cast on yourself after giants might.
I've got a request for you Colby. Can you do a build for a tank that also heals the party. Basically someone who soft taunts and can take punishment but is also optimized for healing and restoring allies?
OMG, Colby, I'm not even moving to the 2024 rulebook, and I still watch these videos. You're gonna have to try way harder than just taking a politically unifying stance to drive me away.
my favorite thing is being a Goliath Warrior of the Elements to potentially grapple enemies and dropping them from 200ft in the air with dash and 3 levels in ranger to get gloom stalker ambusher's leap plus speedy feat 🤣
Regarding the playtest Stunning Strike Save effect, the idea of Stunning Strike is a Monk is channeling their Ki into an adversary to accomplish an effect. We use electricity in the human body for muscle therapy and treatments. But when it is applied incorrectly, serious harm can occur. The idea behind Stunning Strike is no different. If they failed the Save, the Ki was correctly directed through the opponent's body and they were Stunned. If they passed the Save, they resisted the process and took damage as Ki flowed through their body improperly. Everyone's confusion over it never made a lick of sense. That said, Stunning Strike having a Save effect at all is a greater Buff than nearly any Nerf that could be levied against the Feature, so it's still a net positive. Edit after seeing the final thoughts message: You shouldn't lose subscribers for pushing communication, which both main sides in American politics desperately need. Thank you for the good message and positive attitude and keep being a role model.
I'm currently working on a build very similar to this (though never thought to look into grappling). Going Mercy Monk, and Ranger rather than Fighter (not sure how far I'll go with it, yet). Also going with Aasimar, to lean into the healing trope. :)
Another option for this one i like is Ranger at lvl 1 for masteries, skills, and spells. You could take it to 2 for fighting style or do the 4/16 trick to get 2 epic boons at 19/20.
@DnDDeepDive i see, it makes sense and i know you dont calculate it in your vids but what about using it for a boss fights? I would imagine that if you get a lot of those (about once per 1-2 maybe 3 sessions) it could be worth taking a ranger level no?
You and your channel are pretty awesome as well. Personally, I feel I am more of an independent though leaning more right than left as I have seen there are some extremely left people that are wacko and I suppose that could be the same said for extremely right though, I haven’t seen that. I believe you are correct. We need to be able to come together and talk and be civil with one another and not expect each other to have the same opinions. Thank you for your contribution every week.
I've been skipping the last few videos, because I wasn't feeling the 2024 rules, but now having ported my character over to the new rules I was able to get into it again. I'm still not a big fan of cheesegraters though. It's just not an attractive fantasy for me, no matter how effective.
Your last message is very noble and it would be a wonderful world if it were actually possible. Please enlighten us how we are supposed to have an open conversation with the "f*ck your feelings" side for whom facts don't also matter? You can't have a compassionate and empathetic conversation with people that lack those attributes and don't care to have them.
Not an unreasonable way to feel. It probably would've been difficult to try and have a compassionate, understanding conversation with Hitler. At least... once he reached a certain point in his way of thinking. I don't think we can try and talk to *everyone* who thinks differently than we do. My hope is that we all have at least *one* person in our sphere of influence who we might be able to sit down with and really hear them and why they think/feel the way they do, without the risk of it getting ugly being *too* high. If not, I guess I at least hope that we resist, as much as we can, the urge to return vitriol and shouting with vitriol and shouting. Unless what we truly want is actual war, I suppose. I appreciate how it can sometimes feel like that's the only solution. But if we're actually trying to change minds and change the way things are going, in my experience, trying to browbeat someone into submission, or make them feel bad or wrong only further entrenches them in their beliefs. Ya know?
Liked the outtake on this video. I would say dialogue is absolutely the issue,as someone who considered myself a progressive liberal, and now being screamed at and identifying more towards the center or right, I don't get it. I didn't change my views, I still have many views that lean left. It is like you said people are all moving apart.
As someone who is considered to be on the right I wholeheartedly accept your message of unity. Although I'd prefer to keep politics out of entertainment I could see it was weighing on you. For the people who reject unity, good riddance. Let's all come together for some table top antics. For what it's worth, I am Canadian and I do hope your country prospers and none of the horrible things being feared come to pass. I have a strong feeling despite being politically on different sides, we probably agree on a lot.
I was hoping your message at the end would voice more explicit support for those that now rightly fear for their lives considering the result of your election in the US. I hope talking things out with people works for you and others, but I'm not take my chances entertaining the beliefs of anyone who wants to strip me of my fundamental human rights.
I really hope you dont loose any subs over your end message, its literally the most reasonable thing anyone could say. There's nothing wrong with trying to understand people. Thats something we should all be striving for because thats how we make the world a better place. Hopefully we will find everyone on air quotes "the other side" which ever side that is for each of us are more reasonable than we have been lead to beleive. Anyone on anyside unwilling to understand other people are the litteral problem with society not that we all have different ideas on how things we should be done. I hope your discussions went well
I admire your belief in the concilatory ability of humanity. But in this case, I do not share it. "Meet me in the middle" says the unjust man. You take a step forward, recognising the need for compromise in politics. The man takes a step back. "Meet me in the middle", he says. Enough studies have shown the narrative of political polarisation in US politics is false. One side has mostly stayed the same, while the other has become ever more radical. I'll leave you the guess of which side is which. The time for dialogue is over. For one because one side has become so radical, the amount they would need to accept they are wrong about for any amount of compromise to be had is enough to block I estimate 99% of them from doing so. People don't like feeling like they did or believe something wrong, after all. The amount of effort it now takes to reach them is similarily inflated. There's a reason more people are going no contact now, rather than tollerate such friends or family. The other reason the time for dialogue is ended is because, barring something unexpected happening between now and January, one side has won. Permanently. Would you call for dialogue in 1934s Germany? And yes, I believe the situation is similarily dire; the coming zeal towards genocide may be lower, but the amount of power had is higher, internally and internationally. We are now past the "events leading to" stage, as future historians will hopefully call it (hopefully, since that means the situation has improved by then). We are on the doorstep to "The X period of the USA". If you have the ability, I sincerely advise making plans to leave the country. Don't do what many victim of the Holocaust did and wait until they no longer could.
Who’s planning on committing genocide? Trumps team has people from both sides that want to see America be a better more unifying place. If you’re legally in America you have nothing to worry about. Trump is one of the most central leaning republican candidates in a while and is more in favor of pro choice than you might believe and has always held that belief since he started running in the early 2000s. His primary focus is about wasted government spending and requiring less federal taxes from your pocket. He’s a business man who knows how things should be budgeted and sees the daily American paying too much for groceries and not having enough wages. I can understand it if people don’t see that but your take regarding genocide seems to be the extreme one. The majority of voters now see him as their chance out of this mess. Maybe you could try being more specific and I can answer some of your questions?
why not pick hunter1 instead of fighter1 - we still have weapon mastery same HP and moreover we have hunters mark - for first damage report to have precasted hunters mark it would add insane amounf of damage...
Here y was just telling some loser how even Monks don’t want to go completely unarmed now. That’s how bad unarmed strikes are compared to using a weapon. VINDICATION Wish I was wrong though
As a Trump supporter, its nice to hear someone have a level headed take and not call me every horrible name imaginable. Love you Colby and wish you and your family the best.
I totally disagree with his policies, but that doesn't mean every supporter of his is a bad person. Judge people on an individual basis, and if you're here to enjoy d&d with all of us, I'm happy to have you here 😊

Without Vex, The chance of of having advantage on your attacks relying solely on grapple is more like 36%, which means the 75% attacks having advantage is a bit inflated - in truth its less than 50%
On this few words: God damn Colby I fucking love you. You’re good dude ❤
15:43 I think it is just slightly misspeaking, but Colby says 2 Focus points per Monk level, and it is 2 Focus points here at Monk 2 because it is 1 per Monk level. Doesn't affect the build.
I was gunna say... starting as a fighter is way better for this build.
Great video. Love the message on unity.
❤
Thank you for your content! I wish you great luck!
YESSSSS MORE MONK VIDEOS YAYYYYY
Thrikreen build!!!!! In the words if Ooguay "my time has come". Just started the video lol but im excited
25:45 - Technically, *any* character can do that...the difference is, this character can do it *and live*. :)
Just here to say you’ve earned a new follower 💙 🤗
Hooray! Welcome!
Thanks, Nick
Another option for this one i like is Ranger at lvl 1 for masteries, skills, and spells. You could take it to 2 for fighting style or do the 4/16 trick to get 2 epic boons at 19/20.
I am curious if you or a commenter could tell me if there is a reason not to take a dip into ranger for hunters mark especially with all the attacks
@@peralax1466 it’s tough to give up a bonus action so frequently to cast and transfer it - half or more of our attacks are coming from our ba.
Thank you for your contribution every week.
as someone who goes by the name "Nick" I have never love/hated my name as much as I do now when "nick attack" is a thing
Oh no! We found him! RUN!
In my head a grappler monk should totally role play like Macho Man or some other sort of boisterous wrestling type character.
Nice. Appreciated your thoughts.
Still your son editing? As I rather liked the captions in the outtakes and the relationship the two of you must have if so!
Great video as always, the barrier to entry for dnd as a new player is super high but you explain stuff so well. Ps would love a 2024 moon Druid build
colby, thank you so much for giving out your political views, that is really important in times like these ❤
Well we all knew this one was coming 😂
I've been skipping the last few videos, because I wasn't feeling the 2024 rules, but now having ported my character over to the new rules I was able to get into it again.
I'm still not a big fan of cheesegraters though. It's just not an attractive fantasy for me, no matter how effective.
Thanks Colby
Ya know?
There better be a Thri Kreen
I've always wondered why you don't use Randall's artwork in your thumbnail. It's so good! Why not show it off more?
@@mploehrer I’ve tried in some A/B testing and it hasn’t performed as well, strangely
@DnDDeepDive I guess people get upset when they don't see Colby's face.
Well said.
I hope your discussions went well
As an elements monk can I grapple from 15 feet while in element mode because I feel that has insane potential
Danke!
Danke Schoen!
Great video, but I can't find the Panda species in any of my D&D books.
@@sortehuse custom lineage? 🤨
You being old enough to have a gen z son is making *me* feel old
Yo dude. Love your builds, but can we get builds that use only the 2024 rules? The last few vids have used both.

@@kossowankenobi ha ha I know they’re so bad! I wish I were a real martial artist :)
@@DnDDeepDive Me too. ;) Might I suggest Dance of the Drunk Mantis (1979) as inspiration.
Will you ever do build guilds for bg3 mods that are popular? I would love to see some
I did one! But my BG3 days are probably behind me now :)
@ all good thought me might get something because of official mods support. But totally understandable if you’re done with bg3 vids
Goliath dont resolve size problem if you cant chose spelljammer races?
What would champion fighter do to the numbers?
Here y was just telling some loser how even Monks don’t want to go completely unarmed now. That’s how bad unarmed strikes are compared to using a weapon.

Wish I was wrong though
As a Trump supporter, its nice to hear someone have a level headed take and not call me every horrible name imaginable. Love you Colby and wish you and your family the best.
I totally disagree with his policies, but that doesn't mean every supporter of his is a bad person. Judge people on an individual basis, and if you're here to enjoy d&d with all of us, I'm happy to have you here 😊
