This is literally the last performance by The Who with Keith Moon. And yes, Pete Townshend was the first and most famous proponent of smashing guitars. Laser trivia: the blue lasers used in this were also used in Alien (which was filming at Shepperton at the same time as this was shot) for the mist layer over the eggs in the egg chamber. Ridley Scott was having a hard time figuring out how to make it look like he wanted, and he asked The Who if he could borrow the lasers and they agreed.

Yes, The Who were known for destruction of their instruments for years (as well as hotel rooms in the case of Keith Moon). Check out the video of them doing "My Generation" on the Smothers Brothers TV show for evidence of such. It's the opening scene in The Kids are Alright, the documentary this performance is from. I recommend checking the whole film out!
Read my comment about The Band and The Who. When The Band were living in California, I think it was Rick Danko that notices someone laying at the edge of the water (Pacific Ocean) he ask Robbie to come and help him, and they went down where the person was, waves were washing over him, and he was passed out, the pulled him to safety and realized it was Keith Moon.
The Who are a great British rock band formed in London in 1964. They are considered one of the most influential rock bands of the 20th century & have sold over 100 million records worldwide. They have so many great songs such as "I Can't Explain", "The Kids Are Alright", "Who Are You", "My Generation", "Substitute", "Happy Jack", "I Can See For Miles", "Behind Blue Eyes", "Boris The Spider", "Pictures Of Lily", "Magic Bus", "Pinball Wizard" etc.
Some very insightful and prescient lyrics; the outcome of so many revolutions is only who is in control and not much else has changed for the better. They're still touring 50 plus years later with two of the original members, Pete Townshend (guitarist and lyrics) and Roger Daltry (lead singer). Pete is very funny on stage. The use of synthesizer on this song gives it that spacey and futuristic feel.
The moment when a NYC firefighter tossed his formal FDNY hat onto the stage and then Roger Daltrey picked it up and said "I'm not worthy of wearing this".....and then handed it back to the firefighter. It still gives me goosebumps just thinking about it.
The Who was an obsession of a close high school/college friend. As a result, I have seen these legends 6 or 7 times. They always bring it. If you know, you know.
Hi Saeed| Yes, Pete Townsend was the first to windmill his arm, the first guitar smasher, and the first singer - song writer to experiment with and use the synthesizer. An energy at the peak of his power, and awesome to watch! And of course, Rodger twirling his microphone, very dynamic! My favourite band of all time, they were gutted with deaths of Moonie and Entwhistle, and therefore their music library is comparatively small (such a shame), but mighty!
This band is one of the very greatest. Their live performances are beyond incredible. Talented, intelligent & gifted. The character Animal from the Muppets was fashioned after Keith Moon. Perfect! Appreciations for your words & sharing this one.

They did come back on due to the rumpus the crowd made after this song. They played "Substitute", "I Can't Explain", "Magic Bus" & "My Generation". Sadly it wasn't filmed (or maybe it was and never released).
Hey Saeed, Thank you for getting to this song! Roger(lead singer) and Pete(lead guitar) always trying to outdo each other! My favorite live performance!
Another 3 piece band with a singer....The Doors, Hendrix, Cream, Grand Funk Railroad, Blue Cheer, Rush and so many others!!!! Can't believe how just 3 instruments can sound so full. They do have a synth on this one.
The inspiration for the song was their Woodstock Festival performance (1969) when Abbie Hoffman walked on stage during the performance and protested down the microphone. Townshend hit him with his guitar. allegedly. in Far Out magazine Townshend commented, ""I wrote 'Won't Get Fooled Again' as a reaction to all that - 'Leave me out of it: I don’t think your lot would be any better than the other lot!' All those hippies wandering about thinking the world was going to be different from that day. As a cynical English arsehole, I walked through it all and felt like spitting on the lot of them, and shaking them and trying to make them realise that nothing had changed and nothing was going to change."
There is an audio of Hoffman spewing his Marxist/Yippie garbage and Pete yelling "Get off my f******g stage!" Then a sound like, well, a guitar hitting someone. When Pete later introduces My Generation you can hear Hoffman offstage yelling "F**k you!" Pete smiles and says "Yeah, sorry."
Pete was on the David Letterman show playing a Gibson J200 and smashed it into pieces at the end of the song. I was angry, upset, freaking out, yelling because it is one of my favorite guitars!!!! When he sat back down with Dave he explained that he can sell each piece and make a fortune for charity. Fine...but I was still pissed.

One of the very best political songs ever written, exciting, fun, and with lyrics that are still as valuable (or even more valuable) than they were in 1974.
This is my favorite live and vocal performance (Love Reign O’er Me is my favorite musical performance) by them. For your knock-knock joke, how about The Who “Who Are You”?
One of the greatest if not the greatest performance in all of rock history...his song also has a great message. It is intelligently written. Man you should do the whole Who's Next album as it's top 5 rock album ever. Behind Blue Eyes and Going Mobile are amazing. Keith Moon so carrying the energy with the best the best rock bass player not named Geddy.
For anyone who may not know, these lines are a partial paraphrase of an almost 100-year-old comedy routine by American comedic actors Bud Abbott and Lou Costello, "Who's On First?" (All credit where credit is due.) 🎭
Listening to what you said in your commentary about living your life without getting wrapped up in all the nonsense, you might appreciate Billy Joel’s brilliant “Angry Young Man,” a song about a man wrapped up in his own self-righteous anger. I love the lines, “I once believed in causes too/I had my pointless point of view/but life went on no matter who was wrong or right.”
I do like The Who a lot, of the 3 British supergroup, they are up there with the Beatles, however I didn't care for the early Beatles, but love Sgt, Pepper, Abby Road, The White Album. I love a lot of The Who's songs from Tommy. You should do The Who at Woodstock, See me, hear me, feel me, that is probably my favorite Who song. Talking about Woodstock, my favorite group is absolutely The Band, who lived in Woodstock, they were the total opposite of The Who and The Stones, no antics on stage etc. Each have their place.
Yes, Pete was the first to smash his guitar on stage...Keith Moon also frequently demolished his drum set. Pete was famous for doing this and in one interviewvhe stated that he sometimes ran into the music store and ran out with a guitar yelling he would pay for it next week when they were first starting out! The Who were the loudest band of the time and known for their concerts as well as their albums. They are famous for their 2 rock operas, Tommy and Quadraphenia. You have reacted to Love Rein O're Me which was from Quadraphenia. I recommend, in no particular order: Baba O Riely, Who Are You, Woodstock Footage of See Me Feel Me....there is so much incredible music. Also Emenence Front which features the guitarest, Pete Townshend on vocals (he is also an amazing singer...sings some other Who songs and has many solo albums, as does Roger Daltrey and even bassest John Entwistle and the Mad Man, Moon the Loon, drummer Keith Moon even has a solo album of adorably cute songs. ) They started mid 60s and the drummer sadly died in 78 and the recorded music wasn't ever quite the same without him. They did have some great songs after Keith, *Emenance Front* being one of them, but, to me it is almost like 2 different bands. They hit every genre from Pop, Hard Rock, Psychodelic Rock, and every kind of rock music I have ever heard.
Pete started the Guitar bashing. He went to Art School x some German Avant-garde influences show up such as destroying things. Deconstructing them if you will. Keith loved to join in. I don't believe the Ox ever destroyed his Bass.
The 'Orrible 'Oo... maybe the greatest live act of all time. As an aside, you should, if you haven't already watch the stand-up of Bill Hicks. I won't give anything away, other than to say I reckon you'll enjoy his view of politics/politicians. Also, try George Carlin for much the same reasons.
I have seen quite a bit of Bill Hicks his stand up and a lot by Carlin. He is one of my favorite comedians of all time . Just been rewatching a lot of his stuff this week actually. So good!
I gotta say, out of all the pretty girls who do Reaction videos on UA-cam, you are the only one who actually plays music and not some teenybopper nonsense. Seemingly it takes a man to have the courage to delve into the unknown. Thank you very much, 'Won't get fooled' live is a great choice! 👍🎶🎶
This song is actually from earlier than the date on the video. It was released in '71. I was in Junior High back then and you are right that it felt like a 'revolution' was coming in America - altho' NOT one like we fear now. It was nowhere as violent as today's possibilities. It was more of a cultural revolt. The 'Generation Gap' was real. But a lot of it had to do with America's part in the Vietnam war. By the time of this performance, things had cooled considerably and the war had ended back in '75. Of course, that bit about being 'fooled' soon switched to being about Nixon and Watergate politics. That said - The Who were not Americans. They were English. And I was insulated enough back then, that I could not tell you how England was doing at the time. I'm pretty darn sure they had their own troubles.
Thanks for taking the time to share a bit of info and history. I appreciate that a lot! It seems that the message in this song is universal (and sadly seemingly timeless) It feels like this is happening in Belgium too. I see a lot of things going on in the US and UK too nowadays. Scary time
@@SaeedReacts. There were bits of violence in demonstrations in the US in the '60s. Mostly around 'race riots', but also against the 'peaceful' anti-war protestors. The shooting of 4 protestors at Kent State by the National Guard was in 1970. Again, as a young white girl in the suburbs, I was more insulated from the race riots (more urban and mostly black neighborhoods were affected there). And I'm fairly sure that The Who audiences would have been less 'interested' in those. Not that it SHOULD have been that way, but we really were more separated still then and pretty ignorant of what was happening outside our 'realm'.
We all need to stay politically active, but I do agree with unplugging yourself from it every once in awhile to keep your sanity....btw the bass player is very underrated and deserves more love
Pete Townshend was the first guitar smasher, but by default. His guitar broke at the neck during a performance and Pete went nuts and finnished the job out of anger and frustration. The lunatic Keith Moon ( probably rocks best drummer ) then trashed his drum kit completely......the audience loved the act, so they repeated it at most live gigs, but often with Pete exchanging his good guitar for a cheap mock up beforhand. Unfortunately, Moon couldn't exchange his drum kit and cymbles for cheapies. Together with Moons penchant for throwing TV's out of windows and knocking down hotel room walls, the band never made much money until Moon died. A drummer that has never been replaced, except maybe by Animal on the Muppets.
@@SaeedReacts. They were not bad lads except Keith Moon was a borne lunatic and disaster zone. The other 3 came from tough neighbouhoods where you learnt to fight or you didn't survive. Guitarist Pete Townshend wrote the first 2 Rock Opera's as serious opera......which of course they weren't, but in the league of light and comic opera. Very few could play as fast as Moon, but Moon could play like that all night......the strength and stamina of a real mental patient gone berserk......and he had the skills ( chops ) as well.
You have elections? Lucky you. We have selections. In the US that is. The Uniparty has two factions that take turns screwing us over. We have every option from A to C. The will of The People is irrelevant. What to do? Take care of your family and try to stay alive. You nailed it brother. 500 days without a government? Utopia man. Anyway..Roger left his shirt in the dryer too long. When Pete began smashing his guitar people began to expect it so before shows he would shop around for used guitars. Disembodied voice: Knock knock. Saeed Reacts: Who's there? DV: The Who. Saeed Reacts: That's what I said
@@SaeedReacts. The one at Woodtstock is a good one. He then threw his guitar into the crowd. There's a back story to the Who at Woodstock. Some other time. That was in '69. Where were you in '69? Smokin' dope and drinkin' wine. Wasn't everybody? :)
That's why The Beatles made a mock album cover, the infamous "butcher" cover. It was for the USA record company, Capitol, who butchered their US album releases.
"Won't Get Fooled Again" is a VERY political song, as you can tell. Hope we, in the USA, don't get fooled again, like we did in 2016. Don't mean to be political, but as you said, 'tis the season. LOL. Saw The WHO twice, once with John Entwistle, in 1982, and sadly once right after he passed in 2006. I have to say that the 1982 show was better, Entwistle rules. Just noticed that Keith Moon "removed" one of his cymbals towards the end. And Pete Townshend bashed it with his Guitar. Roger Daltry with one of the best screams ever too.
This is the a fine performance but clearly not the band at their best. I'd suggest Young Man Blues from the Isle Of Wight, 1970. That is the band at the height of their power.

The music was a revolution, in itself…then they did the Tommy album…the rock opera.
I can imagine this was revolutionary at the time. Still is for that matter. Incredible.
UTUBE Peter Townshend smashing Guitars!!!!!💥💥🔥🔥
Will look that up 😄
Keith had to duct tape his headphones to his head. they kept flying off.
Long Live Rock!
As a kid in the 1960s the joke with parents was..,
Who's that playing on the radio?
Who!
Them.
Who!
Who is that on the radio?
Yes!
No what's their name?
Who's their name!
THEM!!!
WHO!!!
GO TO YOUR ROOM!
Ooh really? Haha, that is hilarious. I would have definitely tried that one with my mom. Would have ended up in my room as well probably 🤣
@@SaeedReacts. Martin's comment is a play on an Abbot and Costello skit "Who's on First." It was a way I could relate to my father's generation.
"Who's on First" would be a great reaction...@@RalphSpoiledsport
Man you should do the whole Who's Next album as it's top 5 rock album ever. Behind Blue Eyes and Going Mobile are amazing. Keith Moon so carrying the energy with the best the best rock bass player not named Geddy.
The song to me is about changing to the same status quo
If you just want to live your life, someone always comes along to tell you you can't do it that way.
Good point.
(Knock-knock) -Who is it?
-Yes.
-It's Yes?
-No, Who.
-That's what I'm asking you.
🤣
Thanks for recommending that one. Definitely sounds like a song i will resonate with.
Definitely want to explore more of all these epic bands!
@@SaeedReacts. Just a bit of advice - steer clear of Woodstock reactions, as it is a copyright strike minefield ;-)
@@SavageGrace There are several video's on Utube from Woodstock, some with a reaction. Grace Slick singing White Rabbit is one.
@@hannejeppesen1809 Aye, but most get taken down quickly.
Thanks for sharing some info. Awesome performance! I reacted to Baba O Riley, but not the others. Will add them to my list.
These guys knew how to rock 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🔥🔥🔥
Not to be confused with The Hu band from Mongolia. A great dive at some time
They must have had some mixups in the past 😅.
Especially with dinner reservations.
Table for The Hu please .
Did you hear The Who is coming tonight 🤣

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.
The Who are British ... not US politics.
@Saeed Reacts i was just about to recommend John Hiatt!
I reacted to his song Perfectly Good Guitar. Now i know where it might have originated 😄
Pete started the Guitar bashing. He went to Art School x some German Avant-garde influences show up such as destroying things. Deconstructing them if you will.
Keith loved to join in. I don't believe the Ox
ever destroyed his Bass.
I love the rebellious nature, but also my heart breaks for the guitar 😅
The 'Orrible 'Oo... maybe the greatest live act of all time. As an aside, you should, if you haven't already watch the stand-up of Bill Hicks. I won't give anything away, other than to say I reckon you'll enjoy his view of politics/politicians. Also, try George Carlin for much the same reasons.
I have seen quite a bit of Bill Hicks his stand up and a lot by Carlin. He is one of my favorite comedians of all time . Just been rewatching a lot of his stuff this week actually. So good!
Very appropriate song. Things a bit scary in the U.S.
I have been discovering some great music on this channel. This performance is definitely up there! Magnificent! Thanks for watching.
Pete Townshend is credited as the first guitar smasher. Apparently Jimi Hendrix learned it from Pete Townshend.
The OG smasher 😄
Rock stars… nuff said
We won’t be fooled again….maybe?
I pity the fool! :)
stay free
🎼 ... The who ? ... "The Who" .... yes , the who ? ... "The Who" ... I am asking , the who ? "right , The Who" ... Who ? ... "The Who !" 🎼
🤣🤣🤣
We all need to stay politically active, but I do agree with unplugging yourself from it every once in awhile to keep your sanity....btw the bass player is very underrated and deserves more love
Agreed!
Great song and amazing performance. Yes, definitely deserves more love. You are correct!
Pete probably had cotton mouth because of the substances....
Thanks for taking the time to educate me a bit about the origin and history of this. Very interesting! Wild boys for sure! 😃
Saeed Reacts: That's what I said
Definitely my priority. Taking care of my family.
I will look up some of his smashing guitar video's 😄
@@SaeedReacts. The one at Woodtstock is a good one. He then threw his guitar into the crowd. There's a back story to the Who at Woodstock. Some other time. That was in '69. Where were you in '69? Smokin' dope and drinkin' wine. Wasn't everybody? :)
Song's about record company trying to control the band's songs, performances, etc. Who said no! Record ppl brought in new team, and bs continued
Oh really? Interesting! Will listen again with this in mind.
That's why The Beatles made a mock album cover, the infamous "butcher" cover. It was for the USA record company, Capitol, who butchered their US album releases.
Check out George Carlin the comedian. He has your take on this
I love George Carlin!
Cocaine is a hell of a drug 😎
Ooooh boy 😅😄
It definitely is the season 😄
Awesome you saw them live! Must have been quite the experience.
Whatever your political affiliation, the U.S. is at a crossroads-and perhaps the world as well.
I believe so too.
Keith Moon is in the 27 club right????😪
He was 32
😞😞😞
This is the a fine performance but clearly not the band at their best. I'd suggest Young Man Blues from the Isle Of Wight, 1970. That is the band at the height of their power.
Thank you for the recommendation.
You'll lose a bit of your hearing at a Who Concert, that's a fact!
I can imagine 😅
That Gibson is worth more broken than new, because Pete Townshend destroyed it.
My favorite band of all time, Pink Floyd takes the #2 and Sabbath/Ozzy is #3...Metalica, Guns and Roses, Oasis, The Stones...this is my happy place!
So many great bands and music to explore!
