Rolling Stones, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and on and on. We were spoiled man. There is nothing like it these days. The super band era is over with, but like good classic movies, Classic Rock, is forever here on vinyl and digital recording. There is an endless supply of music from the mid 1960s to about 1983, that is what's known as "The Classic Rock" era. Thanks fellas
We were spoiled. We wee so spoiled that it took me years to appreciate just how great The Who and The Kinks were, and also to get into Pink Floyd. They were overshadowed for me by The Beatles and Cream and Hendrix.
Great reaction lads. I think the line at the end of the song, " Meet the new boss, Same as the old boss" is just as relevant and prophetic today as it was when I first heard it live in London 50 years ago. Sad really. Nothing ever changes. :)
About Keith Moon, I've seen some interviews with Pete where he joked that he was more of rhythm guitarist rather than lead because Moon's drumming drove all the songs while he and Entwistle tried to keep the songs from spinning off into the orbit caused by Moon's gravitational pull.
There is an isolated bass youtube video of this song, as well as a full band video recorded at the same time (Trident Studios, 1978). Entwistle was integral to The Who's sound, and can't be replaced
The last half of this song is like a freight train that seems like it is gonna derail at any minute, but they keep somehow keep it on the track. One of their best. Keith Moon was a crazed drummer as well as a crazed person, spent his whole short life that way.
The Who made an incredible rock-opera movie called "Tommy." Everybody needs to see it at least once. Elton John, Ann Margaret, and Oliver Reed among others.
My dad introduced me to Emerson Lake and Palmer, the who, the Beatles, the Rollingstones, the Doors, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd... And the only rock band that I liked in today's generation is from Black Veil Brides... But the other so called Rock and Roll bands doesn't Rock like back in the day and I love drums thanks to ELP... another band you guys should react... Just 3 man band and I mean 3 freaking guys rocking out
The keys are a backing track when they play live .. and when they play live they are a totally different band .. one of the best live bands to ever hit a stage.
"What was Keith Moon on?" As I understand it, pretty much everything, but especially alcohol. Man never met restraint in his life. I've seen the Who twice, once with all members alive in my lifetime and once shortly after John Entwistle died. The first tour was specifically 'all of Quadrophenia,' which they needed a ~20-piece orchestra to do live. Their go-to drummer from that tour onward, Zak Starkey, is Ringo Starr's son, for added musical trivia. All of Who's Next and Quadrophenia are worth diving into.
I saw them 11 times while Keith was alive. I didn’t cry over Jim, Janis or Jimi but I wept when Keith died because my favorite band was no more. When John Bonham died it wasn’t the same. Keith and John were monsters of their craft but Keith was the unpredictable loon who was likely to do anything. He pulled down the back of his pants to show us his Union Jack undies at one concert. He’d knock over stands accidentally from pure frenzy and then intentionally to wind up some shows.
It's said Keith Moon would take any drug offered him, by the handful. Ironically he died from an overdose of the medication given to alcoholics to stop drinking. He had been clean for a short bit but went to a party and indulged. After, at home he took a mass of the medication to stop the craving. It slowed his breathing & stopped his heart. Such a tragedy, he was one of the best drummers in rock n roll.
Moonie played "lead drums" the way Pete Townshend played lead guitar. He was not interest in merely keeping the beat. His work on the album "Quadrophenia" is legendary.
Two more songs by The Who that you have to do: "Love Reign O'er Me", where Roger Daltrey's vocals are the star; and "The Real Me", a song driven by John Entwistle's bass. "Baba O'Riley" is another can't miss classic.
Commenting on the album cover. They pissed on that block. They were asking, who’s next to piss on it. Keith didn’t loose his mind. He was just crazy all the time.
While Pete did play those keyboards, on stage they played live to the prerecorded keyboard track. Keith Moon used to wear headphones to keep the band in synch with the backing track.
Let's put a finer point on this. "Won't Get Fooled Again" is objectively the greatest rock song of all time. If there are more than 3 other rivals for that title, I'd be stunned. It's pure genius. Even its theme -- rebellion and question authority -- totally reflects the spirit of rock and roll. When Ryan luke-warmly said "I like it," I was almost offended!
@@ViewsFromThe502 Your honesty is appreciated! To be fair, it's easier for a Gen-Xer like myself to have context for The Who's genius. A Millennial hearing this song for the first time might have a hard time, on first reaction, appreciating its greatness. If you review other Who classics -- like "Love Reign O'er Me," "Baba O'Riley" or "Who Are You" -- you'll have more context for why the band is so revered by musical experts.
Yes this is an epic song. Underappreciated here is Pete's timing and impeccable power chords. This is not just a good song, it's an extraordinary song.

Roger Daltrey with the ethereal lead vocals, Pete Townshend with the lead guitar, who by the way wrote this and most of the Who songs, John Entwistle on the great bass and the madman drummer Keith Moon. One of the greatest bands of all time, right up there with the Beatles, Stones, Led Zep and Pink Floyd.
Keith Moon was known as "Moon the Loon" as in lunatic. His sanity was frequently a question for debate. That said, he was one hell of a drummer who wasn't keen on following convention.
I saw them many times live in Britain in the late1960's and 70's. The greatest rock band of them all and perhaps this is the greatest rock song of all.
Joe Walsh was asked what was the scariest thing that happened to him while touring with the Eagles. He said that it was when Keith Moon told him that I like you.
There is a "Paul is Dead" clue in this song. The verse towards the end says "The parting on the left, is now a parting on the right." (the part in Paul's hair). "Their beards have all grown longer overnight" (the dramatic change in the look of the band. Beards to call attention away from Paul's changed face). Apparently, there are clues outside the Beatle's Lps. Just thought it was interesting.
I was lucky enough to see the Who 4 times before either Moon or Entwistle passed away. Moon had a drum kit with about 50 cymbals in it and he had them moving all at the same time. He was beyond incredible. Entwistle was, rightfully named the most significant bass player of the 20th century because of not only his playing, but string designs as well.

From "We don't get fooled again... BUT when you talk about destruction, don't you know that you can count me out" or "We don't get fooled again...
