its a dope ass les paul with two mini humbuckers, & yes, with a normal sized humbucker added in the middle...mini humbuckers have a cult-like fan base in guitar world:) great reaction
The organ was a track which is why Keith had the headphones on. He had to keep the band synced to the track. They taped them on because Keith was effing crazy. While Pete was smashing his guitars Keith was blowing up his drums. And driving his Rolls into his swimming pool.
The Who was the first band to use lasers. This was filmed at Shepperton Studios. At the same time as this clip Alien was being filmed basically in the next studio. They borrowed the lasers for the scene of the "egg alien" room from The Who. Next time you watch Alien you'll see it.
Pete went to John Marshall and told him he needed an EIGHT x 12” speaker cabinet. Marshall told him he’d never be able to carry it. Pete told him he had roadies for that. A few weeks later Pete brought the cab back & Marshall cut it in two because the roadies refused to lug it around…which invented the classic and ever lasting double 4x12 speaker stack.
@suffern63 I think hendrix went after the Who and they smashed their guitars and threw pieces of them out in the crowd and Jimi thought can I do to beat that and set his guitar on fire
It's a "revolutionary" song written by Pete Townshend in 1970 and released on the 1971 album "Who's Next". This album is excellent from start to finish. Just like Tommy from 1969, Live at Leeds from 1970 and Quadrophenia from 1973. The Who have been using lasers on stage since 1975.
The WHO were the first punk rock band. Incredible musicianship, but still punk in their performance. Changed rock and roll, like it should be. Angry, don’t trust the establishment whoever they may be.
The song was originally released in ‘71, this performance is from ‘78, I believe. The reason the video quality is so good, it’s being filmed for the movie “The Kids Are Alright”.
When I was a kid, still am I guess, I always thought the numbers on Pete’s Les Paul’s was the coolest thing ever (and I was right) but they were there so his guitar tech could immediately identify the guitar and it’s set up etc. think he had about 6 in a show in case they got damaged. I’ve got an LP - it’s a reallly heavy piece of wood and no one should ever under estimate the performance of PT in any of these live shows.
The Who started smashing their gear as early as 1964. It started as an accident but their management wanted them to keep doing it as part of their act. It kept them close to bankruptcy for years until their album Tommy pretty much saved their career in 1969, and elevated them to superstardom. After that, they would only smash their gear occasionally.
They are in their 30s here and Moon is well past his best. Suggest you look at Tanglewood or Isle of Wight to see them at or around their live peak 69/70.
If you look at Keith at the beginning of the song, you can see him playing to the synth, but not striking the drums. He played to the synth, and so did the rest.
THE MOVE destroyed their instruments in the mid-sixties, but THE WHO took it to the extreme. Yes, these were GREAT musicians. They trained, they played live so much until they were polished. Unfortunately, we have lost that today. You needed talent because so much was live, and even in the studio you couldn't auto-tune, adjust sounds to keep rhythm, etc. The computers have taken over, and creativity has been one of the main casualties.
They were probably in their mid-30s at this point. I saw them in 1982 on their "Farewell!" tour as an 18 year old. I saw them again in 1996. Won't get fooled by the "Farewell!" tour BS again! 😂😂😂 Seriously, though, these dudes killed. And the lyrics to this tune are pretty deep, man. The synth is definitely on a loop in the background. They do that with another tune, "Baba O'Riley," that is an all-time anthem.
Funny line about the angry boomers. Why? A line from an old show in the 70's. OLD MAN: "Son. Never grow old". ARCHIE BUNKER: "What the hell does that mean?" OLD MAN: "You'll find out".
Actually, $10.00 wasn't cheap in the 60s as minimum wage was a little over $1 per hour. A guy working 8 hours and earning $1.25/hr. to buy a $10.00 ticket then would be like a $15/hr. person working 8hr. to pay $120.00 for a ticket today.
Check out the Who on the Smothers Brothers doing the song My Generation and see the drum kit explode. the Who's been destroying instruments for decades.
Hi new subscriber, found by Pop up suggestion on UA-cam on the Cyndi Lauper video...I'm 65yr old who did overshare...Love you remembering your Dad's take on this...was mine too..I was pumped to see The Who in78..had tickets to concert in Philly...concert canceled because Keith Moon died...Finally got to see them a couple of years ago..after 2 canceled concerts ,1st because Roger had throught problems & then Entwhistle died..held on to tickets got great upgrade..5th row center OK and PUNK!!! That's my Home!!! Got to meet 2 of my Heroes...Iggy Pop..79..CBGBS and 82 in Philly, backstage at Clash concert got to talk to my Fav Hero Joe Strummer !!...got to tell him my favorite song was Clampdown & asked if lines in the song related to the Three Mile Island nuclear accident...he said yes...we talked about 20 minutes more...he was an Awesome Man!!!
The original punks. And we are angry because the fun police have taken over. Think about it. If you grew up in an era where you had actual freedom and then were transported into the politically correct cancel culture - you'd be pissed as well :)
The Sex Pistols were banned in the 70s. Radio wouldn't play Working Class Hero by Lennon because of swear words. Roger Waters wrote a song against Mary Whitehouse and her cancel culture in 1975. In the 80s in the US there were congressional hearings against Zappa and Twisted Sister, parental advisory stickers... The Life of Brian was banned in several countries. In the nineties during the Gulf war, they banned The Cure and Massive Attack songs. You're just nostalgic. There have always been people trying to cancel things.
Pete would smash guitars and then go steal another from a guitar or pawn shop until they started to make money. You wouldn't want your rock stars any other way.
This show was recorded for the movie. The kids are all right. That came out in 1979, in front of The Who fan club members.😊
Greatest Rock Band Ever
This song contains the, without question or argument, greatest scream in rock and roll history. Everyone else merely competes for 2nd.
Keith Moon & John Entwistle are the goats of bass guitar & the drums..❤❤❤❤❤
And they were in the same band 🤯
its a dope ass les paul with two mini humbuckers, & yes, with a normal sized humbucker added in the middle...mini humbuckers have a cult-like fan base in guitar world:) great reaction
No appreciation for the music. I am a boomer and this music is not wasted on our generation, at least.

The Who were smashing instruments in the 1960s. They played at Monterey Pop in 67 and Woodstock in 69.
Apparently were pissed that Jimi Hendrix went on before them and smashed his guitar up.Oi,mate that our trick.
@@suffern63 The Who never set a guitar on fire.
@@MrPunkd113 I never said they did

As usual,I am probably just wrong or maybe confussing other gigs, never believe anything I tell you or write on youtube.

Pete Townshend's the one who started smashing guitars. No one would probably do it if he hadn't started.

@@DENVEROUTDOORMANinspired to do so by Townshend

The bassist is enjoying himself...yes,despite his dour expression 🎩
"And the parting on the left is now the parting on the right."
"Parting," not "party."
He got through quite a few. Often put through the speakers. Great live band.
That era had Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and other 'heavy' bands. The Who were known to be the loudest live act of them all.

Drummer Moon's last gig with them he'd die 4-5 months later aged only 32 (but looking older)🎩
The drummer, Keith Moon, was the inspiration for the Muppets character Animal.
The synth part (an electronic organ running through a synth) is on tape. Moon is wearing a headset so he can remain in sync to it.
And he was such an animal behind the drums that they had to tape the headphones on his head because they kept falling off!
If you look at Keith at the beginning of the song, you can see him playing to the synth, but not striking the drums. He played to the synth, and so did the rest.

The pickups aside from the center are Gibson’s Deluxe Humbuckers - a little narrower than “Standard” with a bit brighter tone.
The funny thing is that is one of the few times the guitar didn't break! MANY other guitars weren't so lucky.
watch the whole perfromance from "the kids are alright". some girl comes on stage and makes out with daltrey, LOL!
The parting on the left is now a parting on the right. Parting. Not party.
Parting, yes, but there is a clear hint that politicians on both sides are a let down, etc🎩
All the reasons you list for why we're angry now is exactly why we're angry now. 😂😂😂

Bored looking bloke on bass had most Rock and Roll death ever.
If you want to see The Who smash their equipment you need to watch My Generation live at the Monterey Pop Festival 1967.
No watch them on the Smothers Brothers shoe when Moon packed a little too much explosive in his drums
dude, you didn't need any money back then, a concert was $10, sporting events were the same. Use to go out with $5 in my pocket

BOOMERS WERENT ANGRY except against the War
It may have been 46 years ago...but your generation doesn't make real music, like this...very sad.
The Beatles, The Stones, The Who. They were the best musicians, Stones had the best attitude, could have done without the Beatles.
Without the Beatles, the Stones may well have not made it. They paved the way.
