64 years old and tearing it up, I think had Buddy lived past 69 he would have probably kept playing well into his 90s ~ RIP Buddy you’re still the best
Marvelous performance even Shagnessey is always blown away by Buddy Rich he himself a great teacher and drummer RIP both for setting high standards in drumming!
Just a side-note personal story... I happened to be at National Airport in DC, and was sitting with my luggage and drums, waiting for my flight, when I saw Buddy arrive, meet up with someone, and walk through the terminal. Buddy was walking rather quickly, and was too far away for me to yell out, or chase him to say hello, but it was just interesting to bump into him like that. Of course, I didn't have any idea he was headed for the White House, and was wondering if I had somehow missed a concert announcement.
'The Bottom Line' was basically a Rock club in N.Y. . Just, shows how Buddy's Bands over the Years or at that time transitioned into every venue, played w/ all kinds of music, and Integrated His Music at an acceptable high level. NoBuddy did this w/ Big Band Music like Him...
Many Jazz big names played "The Bottom Line". Basically, if you could draw the crowd you could play there. I saw Sonny Rollins a few times there, Carmen McRae, Betty Carter.
The year after this was filmed, Buddy suffered a heart attack, whilst playing a West Side Story drum solo, which you can watch on Buddy Rich - The impossible solo.He was in agony, but he played it to the end, & he went to hospital & he recovered.
I am trying to find a specific clip of Buddy Rich performing on the Tonight Show. That night I believe he used Ed Shaunesy's drum set and when he sat down Johnny prompted him to do a warm up. When Buddy hit the high hat, it shattered. The prop department made a realistic looking high hat out of the same material used for bottles that are broken over a performer's head. I hope the appearance wasn't on one of the many Tonight Show quadraplex tapes NBC threw in the dumpster before Johnny intervened. Do you have this clip or know where I can find it?
Are you thinking of the paper head gag they pulled on Buddy on the floor tom? That one I remember was a Carson/ Shaughnessy tag team on Buddy. As he soloed the floor tom head broke threw and he had to stop and then I think he threw his sticks up at Shaughnessy. It was in jest and I think Buddy forgave them, but he wasn’t happy being seen by 15 million people and not blowing the doors down.
@@loucontino4804 I don't remember seeing the prank you describe but it definitely wasn't the one I'm looking for. This prank occurred prior to Buddy's number and I think the high hat was replaced with the real one before the number started. I think the best Rich/Shaunessy bit was the night they did dueling drums with Ed uncharacteristicly dressed down to match Buddy rather than wearing his usual suit.
He's proven over the years that he can play any setup. He'd already played on that double tom set before on the show. Obviously, that was what he rehearsed with the band earlier.
Johnny showing Buddy that photo was not something Buddy was going to appreciate. The time Buddy spent in Vaudeville was not easy and he had some very painful experiences to earn a few dollars each week. Once it was gone, he never looked back.
I don't see how Buddy played with that 2nd tom-tom in the way of the ride cymbal. I have a Buddy Rich #80 model by Slingerland and am completely satisfied with it. David L. Saelens (drummer, Rock Island, IL.) Posted 14 April 2019.
Hopefully that helps you appreciate drummers that play on multi tom kits. The more pieces there are the more accuracy you need and dexterity to get around the kit; not to mention better reach!
Hi David, I used to get a lot of vintage drums in the Quad Cities, in the 90’s. Do you play jazz clubs there? Let me know where to go when I come back to visit!
How come that photo has never showed up in any books or magazine articles about buddy I’d sure like to get a copy of that photograph that Joni showed does anybody know if it’s in any publications or if it’s ever been published at all?! The image of those vintage drums alone is worth havingAnd boy does buddy look Jewish in that picture! I think he got that set as a bar mitzvah gift that day it was taken ha ha just joking now don’t get nuts!
It’s clips like this that are reasons to love UA-cam!
Amen to that! Johnny Carson, Buddy Rich and the best big band music anywhere. 😊
Buddy's always delivering. Always giving 1000% Wherever he is. Great to see this also.
Unbelievable time pattern and rhythm The GOAT
64 years old and tearing it up, I think had Buddy lived past 69 he would have probably kept playing well into his 90s ~ RIP Buddy you’re still the best
Buddy was in great form here. He even looks younger than he did in previous appearances!
Marvelous performance even Shagnessey is always blown away by Buddy Rich he himself a great teacher and drummer RIP both for setting high standards in drumming!
Shaughnessy and Rich were real friends ( I think one of Buddy's few drummer friends ), the level of respect between was huge.
This is now one of my favourites of his performances on the Tonight Show.
Saw him 18 times. He was unreal
oh buddy-- picking on butch---still luv ya baby! fyi--saw butch with basie at the bottom line---one of the highlights of my life...
Buddy Rich was an absolute genius!!!
No one can touch his abilities and style.
I can't take it anymore. He amazes me on each of his solos. He is the BEST
Buddy was the coolest musician of al time..... left hand speed was immaculate

I saw him at The Bottom Line from right around that time. He was absolutely unbelievable.
Excellent Post

Good Carson show appearance.
Buddy was famous for sometime replacing his Rogers and Slingerland snares with Fibes, but not his Ludwig snares…probably Supersentitives.
Kohnny Carson, Doc Severinson, Buddy Rich, and Ed Shaughnessy - all in the same place at the same time, live!
Johnny not Kohnny
Phenomenal
Worlds greatest drummer!!!!?👏👏
He simply ruled
Saw him many times in videos and when watching this one for the first time all I could say was " fuck me running " !
Excellent
I've seen much smaller versions of the drumstick pencils. Anybody know where to get them? Thanks.

Great.
Not set up anything like his usual way..but still kills them.

Nice crisp snare...not sure what Buddy was using.
Looks like a Supra

My Supra doesn’t sound the same…
Nor does my playing. 😟

2 toms up top, don’t recall seeing that too often with Buddy
It was a rented set from Pro Drum Shop
Drumuitar ok thanks much

Yeah, once you get used to having the ride cymbal in that spot, you never want to go back!

as much as I respect Mr Rich ... I have to ask.. when WASN'T he on the Tonight show?
Buddy rich
Born : 30 09 1917
Died : 02 04 1987
69 años
35 años
104 años (actualmente)
I heard some great drumming the other day. I asked who is that? My friend said "That's AI, he thinks he's Buddy Rich."
🐐
He always sounded much better on the Ludwig set . Rest In Peace
Carson had some good chops too!
Didn’t realize Jerry Seinfeld was on the scene back in 1981.

Either Pro Drum Shop rental kit, or Ed's back up kit from the closet.

Why give him a second rack tom, he doesn’t want.
Too bad Buddy didn't play Ludwig his whole career.
He seemed to like his 1940’s Slingerland Radio Kings, which I favored as well
King Husain ?
Jordan.
Sloppy ending.
I've seen him 18 times also...
