Buddy displays just about the greatest chops with brushes in this particular piece that I have ever heard... thanks for this awesome post!

Big D - 1 - Channel Barry keener was a junkie and died of a heroin overdose. Buddy famously dumped his body in the morgue and played a gig minutes later.
Barry played for us fellow students at Penfield High School in 1973. I remember thinking, "how does a 17 year old play like that?" massive talent. What a loss.
Music like this never ages.
Barry fit perfectly with Buddy, and I heard them create some incredible music together.
Amazing trio. Pianist was such a gifted player. Bassist was solid. Buddy on brushes...smooth and crisp.
Absolutely....great musicians.
Remember seeing The Big Band in Toronto way back in seventies and Barry Kiener, who I believe at the time was barely twenty. What a sad outcome . So young.

LOL. you are probably shocked someone is responding to your post from 3 years ago but I'm a big BR fan and came across this. Barry Keiner was amazing here but I thought Tom Warrington was heavy on his bass walk. Not his solo but just the quarter note time.

@@edmondutleyjr.4504 From what I know, he played his fretless P bass on a bunch of gigs and recordings for a while before going back to the upright. It's really hard to find electric bass players who played (or still play) this way so these handful of recordings of Tom Warrington are like gold dust..

Great performance by Buddy and his "Duo". Barry would have gone to a long stellar career had he only survived long enough.
Buddy loved playing with piano players that swung like he heard it too. Oscar Peterson, Nat Cole, Kenny Barron and Barry Kiener (here) were some of his favorites. And man, if you thought Buddy was just another fast drummer, are you mistaken. The consummate Musician!

My father first bought me a set of drums in 1971. It was the old blue sparkle with 2 shell-mount tom toms. I had a hard time playing the ride cymbal with that 2nd tom tom in the way. Later (2 February 1979) I purchased a Buddy Rich model #80N from Drums Unlimited in Bethesda, Maryland. I'm completely happy with it. David L. Saelens (drummer, Rock Island, IL.) Read Henry Bushkin's book "Johnny Carson." Johnny was expecting Buddy to play a 20 minute set like all opening acts. Buddy refused and played for an hour. Johnny was pissed and they never performed together again.
Buddy had some great piano men. Add Bob Kaye and Bill Cunliffe to list as well as the great Barry Kiener.
Add Kenny Barron to that list too Rich's earlier work with him was terrific.
Buddy rich yes and great.
Let's not forget Bob Dogan and John Bunch.
Bill Evans couldn’t be everywhere so God created Barry Kiener.
This is the weekend Johnny's attorney, Henry "Bombastic" Bushkin wrote about in his book. Johnny expected Buddy and his orchestra to do a 20 minute opening act. Buddy was insulted and played for an hour. Johnny was pissed. They never worked together again.
I need to pick up that book👍🏻
Great book, revealing, it told things about Johnny that many did not know.
I could never understand why they just didn’t remove the second rack tom, as Buddy didn’t use one.
Everyone else knew that, except the person responsible for getting the kit ready for Buddy..🤓

Much of his visual artistry was certainly based on his usual setup.. he referred to it as a perfect setup.. but close your eyes and you’d never know.
Will be long but worth sharing. Tonight the UA-cam algorithm took me to watch the Buddy Rich solos. Never heard of him before… one tape takes to another where I heard an interview with Larry King in 1985. In that interview, Buddy praised Barry Keiner as possibly the next Oscar Petersen. Wow, what an incredible endorsement. Absolutely needed to find out who this pianist was. And one tape takes me to another. Sadly many talented musicians from the 40’s to today were lost to this horrible addiction. Glad at least there is a video record for us to enjoy their prodigy. Whomever put this tape out, thank you for its production.
I’ve read several places, Buddy’s loved playing in the classic jazz trio most of all. And in BK he found his pianist. Buddy, again from what I read, stuck with Barry through the worst. Buddy didn’t tolerate problems from anyone. Barry was the exception.
Buddy playing in a trio setting is sooo tasty. It still grooves hard but somehow light at the same time.

“Our Love is Here to Stay” was one of Johnny’s favorite songs.
Johnny also adored the chart Here's that Rainy Day.

What a shame about Barry dying, he was such a virtuoso. He just played so beautifully.
