Buddy Rich is pure precision, speed and aggression. Gene Krupa is smooth, classy and melodious. And the legendary Sammy Davis is all of this--the consummate entertainer who can sing, dance, everything. And all of this is pure joy.
Very true, considering he never practiced, he just sat down & got up when he was happy with his work & he played great took great charge of his orchestra. On here you see him off his drums going from musician to musician, keeping the orchestra swinging. A natural.
I was born in 1953. Over the last 20 yrs. realized what a fabulous singer, entertainer, actor Sammy Davis Jr. was ... his life in the end was heart breaking but gave it his all! I've heard Buddy Rich & Gene Krupa over the years but have never seen such an incredible Duo complimenting each other on the drums along with the one of the greatest entertainers Sammy Davis Jr. ... this Video puts a smile and a "spring" in your step! **May God Bless & rest their Souls**
Buddy Rich was like a creature from another planet? he had otherworldly speed blazing blinding speed and flash. But Although Gene could not match his speed. Which I’m sure they were both doing plenty of. There is some thing about Gene Krupa he was melodic a joy to listen to he played from his heart and soul I loved it. Where at times buddy was like a robot just blazing away.Gene could swing man could he swing!
Man o' man, what a collection of talent! Sammy is one of the most extraordinary people to ever grace show business: an fine actor, wonderful musician, professional comedian and great dancer. Gene, ever the showman and innovator, and a wonderful drummer to boot, brought the drums into the modern era by bringing the kit from a background pace keeping instrument to a featured component of the big band. Buddy is flat out the most talented drummer of the 20th century. His timing, technical prowess, speed and ability to lead a top notch big band are and will forever be nonpareil.
The first time I saw Buddy Rich was in 1954 at the old Trianon ballroom in Seattle. He was playing with Harry James at the time .. I was standing right at the bandstand and could not believe his uncanny performance. The next time was with Jazz at The Philharmonic that fall. The other drummer was none other than Gene Krupa with the JAYP that evening. I followed Buddy all the way up to his death. I have many LPs, CDs and DVDs. He still remains to be the greatest drummer of all time. There are many good drummers but he still stands at the top.
The talent in the drumming department has multiplied tenfold thanks to the rudiments Buddy Rich has imparted upon the drumming community. Gene was outgunned in this show, and I think he knew it
Yes there is incredible talent in drumming today like you wouldnt believe, however the swing, excitement and tightness that those legends achieved still cant quite be matched imo but they were focused on only a few styles of playing and were masters at them whereas todays pro drummers cover a lot more genres and have to be expert at all of them, including double kick etc so there is a bit of trade off but on a technical level todays drummers are on a completely different level than the past but that is taking nothing away from the drummers of the past.
I am so lucky I grew up with big band music playing in my house. I loved Krupa's playing from the time of was probably 5 years old listening to Benny Goodman albums my dad always had playing. I'm 57 now. Also, Count Basie, the Duke, Dorseys.
It's like Buddy was saying, "Look what I can do!" and Gene was saying, "Listen to this!". Big difference. Buddy may have been better but Gene always made me smile and watch him over again and again.
For whatever it's worth, I agree 100%. Buddy had perhaps the fastest hands ever ! Many like that, & no doubt he was a great talent. But Gene, had soul, & cool expressions, & true class, he is my personal favorite too !
Krupa basically invented the 4 piece drum kit arrangements they are playing on, so Krupa is a proud papa, when he sees Buddy Rich play! He invented the instrument! IMHO
My high school band brought Buddy Rich to town in the early 70’s. His band was set up in the high school gym, and I was fortunate enough to sit on the floor a few feet in front of his bass drum. I had to pick my jaw up from the floor after an hour of that performance. I hadn’t ever seen a one handed roll before,,,,,or since. He was lightning fast.
What a neat little surprise in my UA-cam feed today. Before my era (Gen X)... before my drum legends... before Collins and Thompson, before Grohl and Hawkins, before Bruford and Muir, before Bruford and White, before Bruford and Mastelotto, before Mastelotto-Rieflin-Harrison/Stacey, before Mason and Wallis, etc... these guys. Wow. That was fun.
Wiw. Just wow. Gene Krupa. Buddy Rich. And Sammy's doing some pretty good drumming with his feet. So wonderful to see these three legends together. Thanx so very much for sharing!
Wow! This is the kind of show I will never get tired of watching because these are the greatest drummers ever lived not the mention the one and only Sammy Davis, Jr. They're all amazingly wonderful musical artists! Bravo! thumbs up all the way!! to heaven!!
Well, don't listen to modern music that does that. That is your fault. There are plenty today that don't. But you all need your cliches, sitting in your arm chair.
Wow!!!! Krupa is idiosyncratic and amazingly innovative. That transfer where he uses the two sticks is just amazing. But as the drum master, Rich is like BOOM! It is like the Emperor has arrived. I'd have paid anytime anywhere to see either of these amazing talents.
I know this stuff will probably before forever on file, storage etc for any one to see in future generations, but I almost feel sad because even though they can watch it, they may never really feel when talent , was actually real talent.. not enhanced, or altered to sound good. The rehearsals these people do, just not these guys, but that entire era .. it is astounding how much work is put into these things, and they are just classic masterpieces.
Likewise, I went to the Saturday matinee as a kid when I saw the Gene Krupa Story. Later, I watched Johnny Carson every night, hoping to see Buddy Rich who was a regular guest. Even though I started in a garage band in the 60's, I used the momentum of these early days to propel me into jazz drumming which I still play.

@@johnlarson111 Oh man, I just watched some video with Sammy playing drums and vibes. I knew he was a consummate performer but didn't know he was great on drums, too! Thanks for the education, John Larson.
To quote somebody else; - "Now that's Entertainment"! Two of the greatest drummers along with the world's best ever all-round entertainer, Mr Sammy Davis jr, who has entertained me with every one of his multitude of talents for 60 + years.
For those of you who think Mr.Rich was unimaginative, repetitious with his fills? and nothing but fast, I fear that you have truly missed the boat. Neil Peart (RIP), arguably the most accomplished and influential rock drummer of the past 40 years, played Buddy's music with the Buddy Rich Band twice at memorial celebrations at the request of Buddy's daughter-who loved Neil's playing and spoke of her dad's respect and admiration for Neil-stated that trying to learn and then play Buddy's part in his band's music was the single most difficult thing he had tried to do as a musician. Not only was the style of music foreign to Neil but Buddy's exceedingly nuanced tempo and technique were mind boggling. Much to Neil's credit, he took on that most difficult challenge and played wonderfully. When Mr. Peart complements you in an almost reverential manner, you know you are special. And Buddy was indeed special, uniquely so. Here is Buddy playing with a small jazz band in the late 50s. If these "fills" are repetitious and his playing nothing but pure speed, then the world is certainly missing something: ua-cam.com/video/sPdj75sqeQs/v-deo.html
How true. Saw Buddy Rich live back in the 80s and I was absolutely blown away. Neil Peart is my favorite drummer, but Buddy was the best I ever saw. Greatest drummer of all time.
@@bennjenn929 Why did Rush sellout after the Signals record? Neil's sound was horrible by Power Windows, quite embarrassing such a great drummer. Before you say everyone changes they were the only heavy rock band to sellout.

Pure, raw talent by 3 men at the height of their careers. The drums are amazing but then what can a guy say? I enjoyed Ginger Baker back mid-70’s playing off each of these men, a mutual admiration society of sorts. I was & still am just in awe! Sammy is Sammy, he rendered me speechless a few times. My impression is that Gene Krupa was a subtle drummer who could also do the spectacular stuff if need be. Vice versa with Buddy, he was generally flamboyant and very fast but also capable of subtlety. In short, two truly great all-rounders. Hats off to Sammy Davis too.
Sammy could do anything extremely talented but buddy rich I think and I’m a novice drummer is to this day the best drummer in the world or at least from what I have seen. Simple kit setup and that’s all he needs offset left hand is golden.
I think Sammy played drums professionally hand in hand with dancing in his early years. Lot crossover between dancers and drummers. I think Fred Astaire was a pretty accomplished drummer too. Ringo was also the best dancer of the Beatles..
Noone would doubt that all three here were world class performers . Gene seemed to always play with taste yet flamboyance. I'm a huge fan of Buddy and he is technically amazing but he can sometimes lack sthg that Gene and Joe Morello had in spades . Still absolutely mind blowing skill though
Buddy Rich: Can hit the drum 100 times in 1 bar
Gene Krupa: Can get 100 different sounds out of 1 drum
Pretty much summarizes my impression of the two in contrast. Buddy had the technical edge, but Gene had more musical imagination.
Buddy Rich is pure precision, speed and aggression. Gene Krupa is smooth, classy and melodious. And the legendary Sammy Davis is all of this--the consummate entertainer who can sing, dance, everything. And all of this is pure joy.

Very nicely stated...
All ol Sammy needed was that cocaine
It should be noted that Sammy was doing percussion with his feet (that's what tap does). Drums without drums.

Never mind who had the most talent. These were three legends performinmg together. How I miss these guys!
plus, tap-dancing was a lesser talent of Sammy.
Not Lesser did you see Sammy handing out the tap shoes at the end,Fantastic
