The Buddy Rich band would play at the Carnation Pavillion every summer for 3-4 nights. I would go every show since I only lived about 15 min from Disneyland. One night they had the Maynard Ferguson Big Band playing across the lagoon from the Pirates ride and there were two guys talking behind me. The tall guy said his brother Bob was playing bass. I turned around and the tall guy was Chad Wackerman.

I remember watching this as a 14 year old kid in the early days of cable - I had only been playing drums roughly a year. I remember being amazed and trying to figure what he was doing. Here I am - some 30 odd years later, still amazed...still trying to figure out what he did.

i like how marching band/military style drumming came through in his drumming. That precision and speed and then combine that with swing style rhythm... just sounded like gun shots and canons going off in a jazz context. Sounded like fireworks finales. His drum tunings/the way his drums sounded were crucial to this as well but of course he could've made any drum set sound great.

Walt Disney got several companies to sponsor the building of various places around Disneyland early in the construction like Carnation, Upjohn, Monsanto, and Frito-Lay. This venue was located just to the left of Sleeping Beauty Castle and originally bore the name Carnation Plaza Gardens. Sometime later Carnation stopped sponsoring it and it was renamed Plaza Gardens. One time they had Buddy at the Tomorrowland Stage and he said “I like playing at the other place better”, referring to Plaza Gardens-I guessing because he was closer to the audience and there was less outside noise there…the best place to see Buddy live!

Rich great technician. Krupa much more musical.
Buddy was very insistent many other forms of music were not music. To which I point out drum solo's are not really jazz and so by his definition they are also not music just noise. A short solo of any instrument is fine. These extended solos do nothing but stroke the ego of the soloist THEY are not music.
