The slow lore- and world building is to me the best part. In particular the human zones lvl 1-30 are chock full of small drops of what problems you'll face down the line. The hints at corruption in Stormwind, the undead threat, etc. Epic quests like The legend of Stalvan and The missing diplomat that makes you feel like a small cog in a very big machine. Entering Stormwind for the 1st time and wondering "why is there a cheese shop in the most central part of the city". The fact that you can SEE BLACKROCK MOUNTAIN from the human/dwarf/gnome starting zones! This ominous and at the time unknown pillar in the vast distance that will end up as the epic end game focal point. It's just a masterclass in game design. The slow pace works perfectly.

The thing about vanilla is that there's no linear narrative like there is in retail. There are no "campaign" quests. There are quest chains, yes, and but it's not as linear as it is in retail. The good thing about that is that the game feels more organic and natural. The player feels as if they are truly part of the narrative, helping the NPCs to uncover whatever plans the bad guys are up to.

The best part is in the very original form there is almost not a single zone not needing revisiting by endgame players. Either because of BGs and PvP vendors, transport hubs, special recipe ingredients, World bosses, solo farming dungeon entrances, companion pet farming, Darkmoon Fair, Seasonal Events, etc.

  • @19Szabolcs91
    @19Szabolcs91 14 днів тому +16

One thing for me is how organic the world feels. It's like actual places, not well-designed video game levels. What I mean is that sure, you have your densely packed leveling zones like STV, but a lot of them are much less so, might be inconveniently placed beyond harder areas, or might only have very few quests for your side... but still, you CAN do them, like Ratchet, Thousand Needles and and Hillsbrad Foothills as Alliance, and it adds to the worldbuilding, like you are lucky to find a neutral faction in enemy territory, or it's your last holdout. And the quests send you all over the place, not just within the zone itself. Some chains might be surprisingly long, some may just be a one-off, some might have an Elite quest in the middle, it all feels less formulaic, and therefore more real.
Even the Cata redesign conveniently has around 50 quests organized into 3-5 main "chapters" everywhere, all self-contained, with a perfect balance between Horde and Alliance content, it's either a full zone worth of content, or no content at all.

Go play rails games for quick fun. This is absolutely a commitment some can't and shouldn't attempt.

Classic feels so immersive. You have two giant continents you have to navigate between while only using your feet - no flying, ground mount super late into the game. You have no quest helper giving you the exact coordinates, you have to read the text and explore yourself. There is no centralized questing so you get send across the continents for one quest. This all help creating the immersive feeling of a vast world that holds many secrets you have to discover.

Agree on all points you made here, and would add two: 1. Class balance/design - every class felt very unique, and fulfilled a particular role in a party. Nowadays every class seem to be able to dps, tank and heal almost. If healer died in classic, you were done. In todays WoW when a healer dies, it doesn't really matter (not unless we are talking mythic). And 2. Itemization - you touched somewhat on this, but back in classic, you almost knew most of the best gear by looks. You would run by some random dude, and think "wow this gear looks insane", you would inspect and check it out. Today, all gear looks insane, has fire, lightning or whatever coming out of it, and transmog ruined the idea of knowing what gear a person was wearing.
Todays WoW is much smoother, and doesn't require a lot of the player in terms of getting to play the game (ie. grouping, time it takes to get to zone/through dungeon, etc). But I think, like you said, this was one aspect of the game that made it so immersive.

She we likely be a mage or a druid, I'll be my paladin. One thing with vanilla also was players got to make their own goals. I always play horde, for example, but I make a point to head out to westfall between 15-20 (pvp server) and farm myself up a defias mask on my rogues. With the quest rewards: I want to stress how cool it is, that many of your great items that you will keep using for long are Class quest items, adds a lot of flavour and makes the stuff only a limited amount of characters can do really cool. I only played Classic for the first time in 2019, but I loved it. One of my favourite aspects of the game was the long quest chains, which rarely tell me where to go. I especially enjoyed every moment of the Onyxia Attunement, The Missing Diplomat, and the Warlock Epic Mount questline (Dreadsteed). Onyxia in particular blew my mind. Having to search the world for an item (was it the Drakefire Amulet?) but not having any clue where it was, was brilliantly evil. Of course, at that point everyone knew where it was located, so it was only a matter of asking (or looking up the answer online). There is so much I never got to do too, find the legendary weapons and items, complete the Shifting Sands quest chain (just for the sake of saying I did it), and probably many other things besides them. The classic servers are still up so maybe one day I can still do them.

No matter how many times I have done a quest it’s just as interesting doing it again. Earning the cool patterns or recipes. I wish i could just hop on and pick up where i left off. Maybe it’ll happen again or maybe a private server like were available prior to classic.

you can keep vanilla while still expanding into wach new expansion. Make expansion leveling specific to the expansion. tbc doesnt increase to 70, its 1-60 vanilla, then 1-10 TBC, then 1-10 WOTLK. Have those levels increase your specialization towards fighting the types of enemies you fight in each expansion. then you can keep the same vanilla leveling experience while making old expansions optional but still rewarding to play in. AND you could have the benefit of making it so ALL end games can still be relevant. Artifacts are still competitive, legendaries from wrath could be BiS with new expansion tier sets. this is the best way

My dad kept grinding and about a year later my friends had gotten into it and I started playing an orc warrior named incontinent (terrible class choice) got him to 60 just before tbc released. One of the things I loved in Vanilla about those "useless" flavour spells was that they made you really feel like you belonged to your class.
I've played a Pally since then and I remember how most of my playtime was shit damage-wise and levelling was so hard, but once you ended up in areas where there were demons or undead enemies your spells just did crits on everything and you realized that was supposed to be your point: you healed people most times but you became actually useful once you reached zones where most enemies were of a certain type.
Same thing for being able to detect Undead or fear them, which was so satisfying to use considering how most times, as the player, you're on the receiving end of being feared. Good times, man....

People sometimes complain that Vanilla is "easy", but they also complain that it's time consuming. I'd argue that the difficulty is different, not "nonexistent". Vanilla or Classic today I suppose, has difficulty in that the game requires time and dedication. Some times, you simply have to invest a lot of effort into doing something. There aren't shortcuts and catch-up mechanics. The raids are simply, sure, but sometimes, simply getting a balanced raid of 40 people together can be a challenge. And despite how "so fucking easy" thing are, plenty of guilds fail due to one or two players thinking that "so easy" means they can simply ignore all mechanics.
As for the levelling taking a long time, I think that's a great thing, because it means that by the time you get to level 60, you have at least a basic understanding of how your class works. You understand what your abilities are, why they exist, how they can help you out of a sticky situation etc. And one of the biggest differences between "oldschool" WoW and modern WoW, is the need to use crowd control. Today, dungeons are simply AoE tanking and AoE nuking. That's it. Just do it as quickly as possible. Back then, AoE tanking wasn't really viable unless you were very overgeared. Sure, a tank in full Naxx gear could AoE tank any 5-man dungeon, no problem. But outside of totally outgearing the content, you'd not really be able to tank a huge amount of mobs without being flattened. So you needed to employ patience, crowd control and a bit of common sense. And common sense is in short supply these days, unfortunately, and patience even more so, so dungeons can actually be challenging when you go into them with a bunch of gung ho people who expect to do all this oldschool content in the same way they do modern content.
Classic is simply more fun. It's a game about being part of the world. Modern WoW is byte sizes challenges. You might as well remove the world and simply have a lobby where you sign up for shit.

Combat is big as well. A lot of Abilities have meaning. They are not just a mini game of press the flashing button to do bigger damage. They actually do stuff. That's why raid rotations for some classes are single button spam, because that is your dps ability, you use the others when they are needed for other things like cc, heals and so on.

A lot of raid rotations are single button because you can't use more of your kit due to the debuff cap.
Warlock would be much more fun to play if you could use your DoTs.
Overall, the gameplay is vastly superior in TBC because you have an actual rotation and all specs become viable.
Also I'd argue that classes in modern WoW have much more utility buttons. (And some very strong ones like Bloodlust, Shroud of Concealment, Demonic Gateway, Stampeding Roar, etc...)
Classic classes have a lot of dead ones that have next to no use. (Most DoTs, less useful debuffs, HoTs and other small buffs.)

@@josipmarasovic2436 Having a complex rotation adds another layer to combat. Also most rotations aren't rigid and have a degree of randomness and decision making.
For some stupid iterations like Ret Paladin in TLK it boils down to press the thing that lights up, but for the better rotations you're actually dealing with shifting priorities and you have to make decisions as you go while dealing with the fight mechanics.
TBC had some banger specs from a mechanic point of view, like Slam Warrior or Seal Twisting Paladin. (But they were more focused on execution timing than decision making.)
And frankly, I'd rather do that than spam Shadow Bolt.

WoW was super accessible and somewhat clear for casual players. It allowed for a massive influx of gamers which in its turned allowed a vast population with healthy economy and interactions of all kinds. All of that was backed up by a first class support (before automated CS times). High population allowed thousands of guilds to coexist and compete leading to emerging a second layer of stories and myths in the game (adjacent to the plot). And in the center of it all were regular "clueless" casual players, who spent their time just wandering, goofing around, exploring, questing, sometimes doing practically nothing and not even touching high-end content. WoW was and is a people's MMO, which gave birth to a vibrant community, without which hardcore achievers would not b able to exist.

He shows up and you are in his aggro pool just by being there, then later when he defeats the guards he comes after you and you are in the inn minding your own business... AGGRO i really wonder if the NPCs cast some kind of spell passively that is considered "healing" like if you go within the vicinity of stitches while hes fighting guard you become part of the fight, which isnt the case with other situations where you see someone being attacked by mobs and you decide to not help and they die, and the mobs reset.

In Retail the world is meaningless, leveling is fast and meaningless, community non-existent, class design dull and homogeneous with everything feeling the same because Blizzard wants every class to function the same way and perform equally. There are so many things that turn me off in Retail, but at the end of the day the game just doesn't feel like warcraft anymore, but some endgame performance simulator and nothing else.

It was extremely immersive. It was also challenging; not as challenging as something like Everquest, but the game wasn't totally handed to you on a platter. I don't know what it's evolved into exactly, but it's no longer an MMORPG and the whole point is min/maxing item level instead of enjoying the adventure.
