I like the vanilla version then ultimate, something about making a comic book cover with your selected characters is sick, but I don't mind ultimate that much
Fatal Fury 3, Real Bout 1 and Real Bout Special all have incredibly unique and stylish selection screens. MB and UNI definitely takes the win as far as batting averages within entire franchises go. I love the laidback, mysterious and classy, yet still energetic tone of their soundtracks and presentation. MSH were the first game that made me aware of the importance of a game's UI. The super varied and stylized artwork that's custom tailored to fit each character really stands out compared to the more uniform and restrained style of the rest of the series. Plus, the part where the characters bust out of the monitors that displayed their selection artwork before fighting each other just blew my mind as a kid.
I hate trying to show people that BBTAG can be fun, and *every* time I have to go "keep going, there's more characters" lol Nice video though, I think the MVC2 opening could have been cut down a bit but the rest is really well paced and informative. Personal favorites outside of this video are probably En-Eins Perfektewelt, Tekken Tag 2, KOF13 and Them's Fightin'. Blame the music getting me pumped up for a fight, or in Herds' case, changing up depending on the character hovered over.
Two of the most underrated character selection screens wre probably Fatal Fury 1 and Injustice 1. Fatal Fury 1 has the characters chilling next to each other, which is kinda neat and Injustice 1 has character portraits that look like they are about to fight each other. My favorite part about the Injustice 1 screen is that you can see a small little animation play on the side which tells you what the characters are all about. Bats for Batman, Green Lantern cores for Green Lantern, Lightning for Shazam, etc.
also gotta give a shoutout to Injustice 1 with how when you select your characters, Player 1's character is jumping in for flying in to attack Player 2's character, who looks like they are ready to defend and counter Player 1's character creating these cool shots that look like they come from a comic book. Another thing I liked is the placement of the characters on the select screen with all the heroes on the left side of the screen and the villains on the right, as well as having the bigger name characters like Batman, Superman, Joker, and Lex Luthor being closer to the center of the screen and the lesser known/niche characters are towards the edges of the screen. Makes finding specific characters easy, especially for people new to fighting games who probably just wants to play as their favorite dc characters, who tend to be the most iconic ones.
I feel like my be all end all of fighting game character select screens has to be Thems fighting herds purely because of how every character has their extract of dynamic music depending on which side they are chosen which adds to the backing theme
DragonBall Z Budokai 3…if you haven’t seen its character select screen, look it up. plus the noise it makes when you’re switching through the characters, absolutely perfect.
I'd say the worst character selection screen goes to Kasumi Ninja on Atari Jaguar. Blazblue Cross Tag Battle's character selection screen is reminiscent of Everything vs Everything, where one of the optional character selection screens allows you to catagorize your characters (Capcom, SNK, Cartoon, Anime, Nintendo, Sega, etc.) instead of a gigantic selection screen.
Fatal Fury 3. By far my favorite character select screen. Instead of a menu with squares and character icons, there’s this big splash art with the whole cast sitting around a bar. You can see each characters personality in how they sit, who they’re close to, etc. So much can be told about a character’s personality alone *just by the select screen*. Absolutely rockin’ artistic design from SNK in the 90s, and to an extent they’re bringing back the highlighted character silhouette screen for the newest fatal fury game lol
Tekken Tag 1's is fine I think. BBTag does the "Budokai Tenkaichi" style CSS, but it doesn't have THAT many characters to justify it. They gave P1 and P2 their own lists, but I think it just clogged the screen up. I've got a nostalgic bias for the Budokai 2 and 3 Wheel style ones. I think going over more Tekken, Soul Calibur and Killer Instinct would have been cool.
Commenting to boost in the algo, but this was a great video and I found the end particularly funny. Wish you mentioned the alternate css in CvS2, though.
What about King of Fighters's? What about Dissidia's? What about Super Smash Bros.'s? What about Naruto Storm's? Seeing the length of the video, I was expecting to see much more fighting games select screens and I didn't even expect this video to be with commentary. Anyway, it doesn't mean the video was bad. I appreciate the idea of making such a video already, and it's cool that retro games were included.
I absolutely love M1K’s, I love that characters will walk onto the screen when starting it up like Havik walks up by picking up his head off the floor & twisting it on. I love how it looks when on the screen, plus in Khaos Reigns the background will change. Also another way M1K outdoes MKX’s & MK11’s character select screens is having the characters clash & you select the stage, the stage loads in the background & you’re right into the game & it transitions smoothly. IT’S FANTASTIC!
UMVC3s character select screen is my favorite Simply because of the ost It’s hard not to just sit there like John cena with head phones on vibing to music
I give you some feedback. This video is really good, but I think you need a little bit better. Mic quality I had to turn up my phone to almost full volume to even understand what you were saying
I don’t play DBFZ. But I just realized how the character select is separated into bad guys on the right and gokus on the left Edit: I just noticed the two gokus that are Goku Black and Zamasu on the right side
I like fighting game select screens but I hate how modern fighting games have this register character BS for impatient people. Sometimes I may want to change characters on the select screen and not have to worry about registering another fighter. Casual matches should at least always go to character select screen, on SF6 in the Battle Hub you have to get off the Arcade cabinet and register anoter character and it's stupid.
While I love UMK3, I can't help but feel the actual layout of the characters are a mess. Player 1 defaults on....Kitana? Really? Sektor's on the left edge of the 4th row, but Cyrax is 2nd on the right on the same row. How about put Cyrax where Kung Lao is, and put Smoke where Stryker is so you sort of have a Cyber Lin Kuei pattern.
Reuploaded because people said the music was to loud last time
this is a lot better and you’re much easier to hear 👍👍👍
The downgrade from the awesome comic book selection screen in UMVC3, to the ugly, barley organized one in MVC:I is actually wild

Where is SOUL CALIBUR??? Consistently some of the most goated character select screens of any game, especially 2 and 5.
WELCOME BACK TO THE STAGE... OF HISTORY
I love how the image of the MVCI screen you used hides the biggest crime on that screen
My favourite character select is guilty gear +r, D.O.A is such a good theme
Persona 4 arena is also good
I hate trying to show people that BBTAG can be fun, and *every* time I have to go "keep going, there's more characters" lol

I was about to rush in screaming in defense of BlazBlue...
Then I realized that was Cross Tag. Truck on king, you right
nothing like the SF1 character select 😮💨
Good video! The audio balancing is kinda all over the place tho lol
People tell him it was too loud before XD

@@derrinerrow4369 It was really cool to look at.
Fatal Fury 3 where characters group together for posing for a photo
Fatal Fury 3 where characters group together for posing for a photo
for some strange reason i just hate cross tag's character Select Screen. Persona 4 Arena is prolly my fav
Great vid!
Street Fighter 6 select screen had so much personality and soul and also has the best of the best versus screen in the entire Fighting games imho
I'm glad there are more people than just me who analyse character selects this much.
I feel like my be all end all of fighting game character select screens has to be Thems fighting herds purely because of how every character has their extract of dynamic music depending on which side they are chosen which adds to the backing theme
People need to see this.

Dude CvS2 has some of the best fighting game character select screens
I’m glad I watched this video.
UMVC3s character select screen is my favorite
Simply because of the ost
It’s hard not to just sit there like John cena with head phones on vibing to music
i think Strive’s is fine. not great, not anything special, but it’s what it needs to be without any bells and whistles
Good movie , throw a like your way .
You know a character select screen is bad when you say why 7 times😂
We getting out the hood with this one
Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom is one of my all-time favorite games, but the character select is horrendous, especially with 2 people
I give you some feedback. This video is really good, but I think you need a little bit better. Mic quality I had to turn up my phone to almost full volume to even understand what you were saying
I know you didnt show it but Sf5 select screen was also pretty good, honestly every street fighter game i played had a pretty good select screen
Golden Fantasia is very simple but I like it a lot.
I don’t play DBFZ. But I just realized how the character select is separated into bad guys on the right and gokus on the left
Edit: I just noticed the two gokus that are Goku Black and Zamasu on the right side
Should've add multiversus and put it at the bottom of tier list
12:26 why there's two Haggar in there?

same
Why did you use the edited MVC: I character select where Marvel & Capcom have the same amount of characters
What's wrong with bbtag's it's perfect
🎉
He didn't include dragon ball budokai tenkaichi 3 🥲

king of fighters??? kof character select screens are amazing
SFV's CSS is alright, but man some of those models look awful up close
Where’s Guilty Gear??????
You complain a lot😅 just a menu that takes 2 seconds for selection.
If the music's boppin, I ain't complaining.
Best is CVS1
BBTAG had bad everything. I like Guilty Gear Xrd and BlazBlue Chrono Phantasma The character tree just too awesome
not a single snk game bruh...
Wwe 2k from 2k 15 onwards are so bad
Aw man you stole my pfp😢
