First video of yours that I’m seeing due to my echo chambers of fighting game stuff and LGBTQ+ issues coming together in the best way. I have to say it’s an excellently crafted video. Hope to see more. I went to my first local fighting game meet-ups 1-2 months ago and saw many LGBTQ+ people there, which I was glad to see. 😁To me, even as a cis-gender person, it always means that I can be safe in a space when others feel that way too. ❤

I got recommended this vid by a socal local group. When I started at my local last year I immediately noticed way more diversity than other videogame events I've been to in the past (I was only familiar with online shooters at the time). I really appreciate you sharing your experience and other icons in the FGC. The welcoming aspect of the community benefits everybody and I experienced that first-hand when moving to a completely new state and fighting through some social anxiety. Makes a lot of sense that the social and self-improvement aspect of these games invites some of the most awesome people to play!
Back in the day, around mid 2000s, when Guilty Gear was still getting popular in my hometown, the best Guilty Gear players were all from the gay community. No holds barred. They were dressed in drag and would own you in the arcade.
@@iwillgosomewhere Me when someone’s story or experience starts getting *a little too* cool or interesting (nothing cool or fun or exciting ever happens, everyone’s life must be as boring as mine)
Lowkey eSports would be way more fun if people dressed up a bit for the occasion, unlike regular sports they could dress so cool because their physicality is irrelevant, it's their perfect chance to create a character other than their true selves
6:48 made me tear up, I'm struggling to think of another environment where that many dudebros would root for and get super hype after a success for their trans girl homie outside of the FGC
Your conclusion at the end of the video really spoke to me, I have so much appreciation for the fgc because of the space and community provides. fighting games (for me atleast) are about accepting yourself and improving upon the aspects you feel can be improved upon, and then always being open to helping others get better at their craft no matter their walks of life. I'm not particularly good about putting how I feel about fighting games into words but they're very important to me and many others. This was an awesome video that really reinforced the goodwill I feel for the fgc. :)
This is sorta a negative comment to make, but I think one of the most important parts of this phenomenon is that fighting games are built around people, and not ideas like esports. Esports are pushed to make themselves like real sports, with all the money and advertising and teams, and that means they need INVESTORS, while fighting games have been entirely a community effort. If a person in esports proves too controversial regarding their identity, they likely wouldn't be contracted on. I don't think we'll ever get someone as open as Sonicfox in esports, because the more conservative funds providers would dislike who would be getting this money.
while it does suck to say, you’re absolutely right. there’s a reason a majority of the gender/sexual minority tournaments (in traditional esports) are completely funded by their communities, and that’s that big companies aren’t willing to invest in that as it’s a big risk for them. it’s also super unpopular to a large majority of these games overseas audience, so in the companies eyes, it’s a lose lose situation a lot of the time.
Strongly disagree honestly, like if the fgc had a player as open as donk people would be screaming for him to get banned at events especially in the modern fgc. The reason why fgc’s isn’t esports is because the games don’t evolve so much as change entirely. Sf2 and sf6 have nothing in common except for the name. Legacy tekken and nu tekken are entirely different games. Don’t even start on strive and real guilty gear. While in esports like Dota and cs, if you played dota all stars or cs1.6. Odds are if you play Dota 2 or cs2 right now the game isn’t gonna be that much different
@@Shodan130 I have been looking up this Donk kid for like 30 minutes and I do not understand why people would want to ban him. Is he super omega trans or something I do not understand. Also yeah the differently numbered games are different so of course they'll be different, SF2 came out 30some years ago. Plus this is a comment about the economics of the FGC vs Esports.
@@larrydupp3988 mate Dota and CS also came out near 30 years ago. Like late 90’s. That’s my point the games have changed very little since their inception. While fighting games are constantly changing which is something people don’t look for in a spot. People wouldn’t play football if you could use your hands for 7 years then you had to use a stick for the next 7. And with donk I mean the trash talking. The fgc you can’t even pop off without people trying to get you out.

Now I'm wondering if the guy who introduced me to Arcana Heart and DFCI is trans. They presented as cis at the time, but the time was also 10 years ago.
I began to play overwatch and got my nephew to play it with me too but I didn’t know that they supported gay stuff. When I found out I instantly stopped! That’s why I don’t and that’s why I don’t think anyone one else should either.
@@johncychosz8799 You should also stop going outside, and stop using social media while you're at it, we don't need more people like you that try their best to ruin the lives of others simply because you refuse to understand them.
It's not even just "gay people" either, it's minority groups in general. Fighting games have a lot more PoC (in fact, usually I see just as much, if not more black people in major tournaments in the West compared to team based esports where I can probably count the number of black players on my hand for LoL or the such) and cis women competing at a high level too I honestly can't think of any other explanation than minority groups being attacked for being minorities than them not being seen as much in team games
From talking to PoC people about it, it's more a question of urban and suburban racial demographics in the US. Because arcades only really work in heavily populated areas, and because of the White Flight, US cities have a much higher proportion of PoC than the suburbs. Therefore, more of them grew up playing in the arcades than white people did, thus a higher proportion of PoC playing fighting games now. The inverse seems probably true for other Esports games, since most of those are on PC, which were (and really still are) really bloody expensive, so you'd have seen more people in the wealthier suburbs (i.e. white people, because, again, White Flight) with them than in the cities, thus creating the foundations for self-reinforcing community feedback loops. Doesn't help that a lot of PC gamers are notoriously racist/sexist/etc. as you'd kinda expect from people living in the suburbs, but I don't know how much that part affects things.
@@dominiccastsI mean as a "suburban" (in central Jersey suburban isn't exactly the same as suburban in other parts) POC queer myself mine and my family's experience with gaming was linked to home consoles. While a select few cousins liked WrestleMania & winback, the whole family got involved when we played Tekken, smash, mortal kombat, or killer instinct. I think the diversity of characters (or at least non eurocentric nature of them) is what made those fighting games so appealing. You can express yourself through the way they look AND through the move sets you use. Those same cousins I mentioned also only played as Ryu, link, or scorpion while most of the rest of us tried out everyone.. and I stuck with Raiden, katana, or peach 💖 The urban arcade theory sounds acceptable but the nature of an arcade is existing where people have disposable income, so regardless of locale that income is necessary to participate, unfortunately. I do think the larger driving factor is representation/the pursuit of something that's new/not another rehash of our (relatively) boring American reality. This is an anecdote but in addition to what I said: a lotta sports averse, honors class type kids exist who are the children of immigrants in suburbs. Video games are an excellent source of cognitive development and imaginary play behavior that fully did not exist in such a way prior. Even with tabletop RPGs you're limited to the mental scope of yourself or your DM. Games authored with a diverse perspective (compared to standard American perceptions) kinda forced the normative masses to accept that WE (anyone non normative, POC, queers, women, disabled folks) exist and can beat your ass. It's subversive in a very cool way, imo.
@@ShouPow Huh, I never thought of that about what games mean, but that tracks really well. Granted, it would probably also go some way to explaining why video games, and effort put into being really good at video games, is looked down on, though I expect that's mostly because the standard American perspective is that anything that doesn't give you money is a waste of time, even if the disproportionate number of non-normative, especially neurodivergent, people playing them is a factor.
Well there are less of us in the west. If we are around 14.4%, we can't be represented everywhere. Sports Games ( Madden, 2K, etc..) Fighting Games (Atlanta, Florida, NY/NJ/Cali have strong scenes with PoCs) FPS Actual Sports to play in college and professional leagues. (Overrepresented) Its not about being attacked, its about which game will get you to where you want to go. Fighting games don't require you to get to Master Rank to qualify for the biggest tournaments in the world. It helps a lot but the format is pretty open in certain regions. We need team based fighting games! Team of 3 needs to be good Daisuke!
That's not a fighting game I've never heard of, that's Chaos Code, I have it on Steam. Wait... Crap, I might just be the trans girl in the local scene who's always practicing fighting games that no one's ever heard of and I feel called out by this.
My theory: to fully experience fighting games, you have to *regularly* go out and meet other people, and when you meet a lot of other people, there's going to be a lot of different people. Same reason there's a larger queer population in Magic the Gathering and DnD than say Star Wars or Marvel. These games also basically require some form of self expression and way you play. Even in Magic, two people can run the same deck and have the same hand and draw the same cards, but they can both play completely differently. And that's not even considering what deck you want to play and if you want to build one. DnD is basically self-expression: the game, and we all know how Umisho and Leffen both play Happy Chaos differently. And when a game not only rewards but REQUIRES expression, people who feel the need to express what they've hidden their whole life will express it.
the last clip reminded me of a screen shot of a discord message that went as followed "Let me walk home and hrt then Ill be good to strive" "Hrt before strive should be considered doping"
Great job explaining this! An honorable mention (since you state that you don't follow Street Fighter) is Ricki Ortiz, who was a top player in SF4/5. She was the first openly gay (then) top player I was aware of, and eventually came out as trans.

I got this randomly recommended to me in my "related" videos on the side bar of something else I was watching, but when I saw the title (and the like/dislike ratio), I was a bit concerned... and then I clicked into your profile and saw your pronouns were they/she and all of a sudden that worry was gone sahdgkljhsdalkg but on the topic of the video, it was awesome! really well thought out and put together. the only bits I had really seen before about the FGC was some stuff about Bridget (and some people's overblown reactions about her) and SonicFox, so it was really cool to get more information and more context for all this! so yeah anyway, awesome video and I really look forward to seeing what more you have in store! (I've already watched your video about gender bender episodes and loved it too!)
because of this video i was posted on 4chan several times and have had waves upon waves of people coming in and mass disliking this version. youtube itself removed quite a few (the ratio used to be closer to 75%) and it really sucks. i’ve had to remove so many comments of people saying awful things, all the while i’m trying to celebrate the diversity of something im passionate about. i’m glad my channel has finally found its audience, and overall all the support on my newest video gives me hope that things are getting better.

I know you posted this a while ago. It just came across my feed. There is one person I believe you left out, from the original eSport, Starcraft. Her name is Scarlet, and she has been a top level player for a long time, and she has been very open about her transition and her journey.
In League, there was a NA player by the name of Remilia who went to play on the LCS for a couple of years iirc and she was trans. She played support (like yourself) but she was in one of the worst teams so she didn't stay for long tho. Anyways, I loved the video and the perspective that you use while talking about this.
I love the "why are there so many people from this country?? [pride flag]" joke, it never gets old also the inverse "what pride flag is that?? [country flag]"
I know im late to this vid but I think THE most important thing that is looked over for why FGC has so many LGBT players is: expressivity. Team based games, you have a role and you fill it with minimal personal flair/expression. But in fighting games, you pick characters that fit YOU. Some characters are zoners/brawlers/defensive/etc., but the way characters movesets are used can be so varied. Example, if you watch PPMD falco vs Mang0 falco, you can tell exactly who is playing (even w/o nametags) purely from interactions/gameplay. Being a part of the LGBT community is the ultimate showing of personal standing and expression in which fighting games compliments so well
Being a falco player is so funny. You have your old gods (pc chris, doctor peepee), one true god (buster/kid/goat) and the four horsemen/woman(westballz, ginger, magi, bobby). Every single falco player will pick one of each to draw inspo from and it reflects on their play sooo much and i love it
This video just popped up in my recommendation feed today. I initially clicked it because the title was rather funny (got clickbaited so hard) and not expecting much, but it was a very good watch/listen. The topic doesn't really affect me, but it was very nice to see another person's perspective of the situation and understand the importance of it as a whole. A good way to spend 30min of your life
Watching this and hearing you talk about how important representation in media is makes me think of one time I came across a video essay talking about how wanting to be represented in media is “narcissistic” or some shit. This was around the time where I think I saw a lot more conservative opinions online and didn’t know enough to know that they were stupid, so I was planning on watching it, but ended up being too lazy to really start it. I’m so glad my fuckin ADHD brain prevented me from watching that because I would hate to have my opinions on representation formed by that video. I enjoy making gay characters to represent others, and although I haven’t really made any finished stories yet, i would love to hear that one of my characters helped an actual person out with their identity.
i have gotten SO many comments saying awful things just because i said bridget is a girl, like comeon i just think shes cute it's really not a big deal
@@goIdy weebs care all about the artist’s intent until the artist intends for something to be gay (Not sure if weeb is quite the right term here but you know what I mean)
@@familiarnamemissing3382 When the established lore for the boy dressing like a girl has him repeatedly correcting anyone who mistakes him for a girl, repeatedly stating that how he dresses doesn't make him any less of a man, and working as a bounty bounter to ultimately disprove a superstition about his existence as a boy being a bad omen, it's only logical that having the newest official lore state that the boy now identifies as a girl is bound to raise some eyebrows. This is where complaints about Bridget come from, it has nothing to do with gender or sexual orientation. Venom was created and added to Guilty Gear before Bridget, he's been gay the whole time, everyone knows, no one ever cared. If Bridget was trans from the start, people wouldn't complain either. Character retcons are the problem.
There are honestly so many factors. Fighting games have always been more diverse, also having a disproportionately large black audience compared to other genres. Played internationally, with large rosters of characters designed to have broad appeal. Meritocracy, one on one, with a focus on mutual improvement. And just bonding over shared interest.
Black audience (me), lgtb audience, Disabled audience (also me).. it's why i love the fgc. The large diversity it has. A mecca of diffrent personalities and lives all for competition.
The answer is autism. An extreme amount of Trans/gender diverse people are on the spectrum. Its the reason why they fixate and get so good. Ask SonicFox
As a pro fortnite player (no this is not my main acc) who sits at about top 100 in the Americas; im the only queer person OR WOMAN that i know who is around this level. I did know one other queer person but he has stopped competing. I am "out" in the friend groups i play in but iwould never post it on my official acc, the response and hate wouldn't be worth it. I recently started playing guilty gear strive as my first fighting game and was shocked by the about of women and queer people competing at the top of the game. It really warmed my heart to know that other games have more representation.
I wouldn't use the smash community as a representation of the fighting game community. Would have made a lot more sense to use Street Fighter, or Tekken.
@@lydiawilder5996 yes, and it is also by far the most popular fighting game, encompassing vast majority of the fighting game community, and as such is a much better representation of the fighting game community than smash. So if you want to say that the street fighter community seems toxic and queerphobic, it goes against the whole premise of this video.
video essays, just like literary essays, reflect personal experiences. centering the video on games that she has more experience with (guilty gear and smash) gives it room to be imbued with a lot more personal significance and knowledge of details i know smash and the FGC have a contentious history, but there genuinely is quite a lot in common between them and especially for spectators there's a big shared demographic. i don't think the video would've been as good if she focused on tekken or street fighter
@parkourboio1062 because if there was a focus on Tekken and Street Fighter the whole narrative of the video would have been incorrect, and would call into question the validity of the picture the video is trying to paint 🎨
WOW i never saw this video until right now I APPRECIATE THE SHOUT OUTS VERY MUCH AND IM SORRY FOR NOT GETTING BACK TO U I AM GIGA DOGWATER AT RESPONDING TO INQUIRIES let me know if u ever do a part 2 and I'll respond this time lmfao
This has been an interesting video, thank you for this. Honestly I didn't think it mattered too much when it came to sex or gender, because personally once you enter the arena you leave everything behind, you're no longer man or woman, elder or child, one sexual orientation over another. When it's a competition that's all it is, one v one...unless it's team based. That aside I was aware about some of this stuff and it's important for everyone to have some representation, but it should be good, and you did that with this vid. Thanks again.
I'd just like to say that I've been obsessing over Adachi's theme (A Fool or A Clown specifically form P4A) all day and you playing it at one point made me unreasobaly pop the fuck off at 11:36. The day ended as it started thanks to you using it for 3 seconds.
I think another note to the whole point about character selection, is how characters in the fighting game community are uniquely important. Their designs are incredibly deep and without bans or needs for teamcomps, maining a character is simply the way to go. In a competitive environment this often leads to people becoming synonymous with characters, placing an outstanding amount of meaning on the them.
i think figthing games is preferred to be played the way it is side by side is due to its roots way back playing it on arcade where both respect and hype is achived whenever a new challenger bravely lines up or puts their token on the arcade cabinet to challenge the current playing champion ... online esports in the other hand hides in their avatar character that most of the time anonimity can change the way people behave than face to face
yea i do say “there are multiple characters throughout the series”, though i only specifically talk about testament and bridget. should’ve mentioned venom though for sure
As Sasha Velour once said, camp is an expression of effort and grandiosity and not based on taste or passability. So many characters in fighting games are campy expressions of gender. Just look at Chun Li in comparison to Zangief as examples. Also, some studies show specifically that gay men have a larger, denser amygdala which results in a social and emotional intelligence closer to that of straight women. I think the combo of those two things and the zeitgeist of toxic team based games results in gays going to single player games. I have to play the team based game of being an openly gay man in the workplace every day where the opinions of others shapes how my team views me; I just want to play games that are solely based on my level of effort and skill and not on my communication and executive decisions because I already get paid to do that 40 hours a week. Love this video, thanks for making it ❤
Hey! Just dropping by to say appreciate the vid. I feel I learned a lot from it. I hope you one day change your mind about never playing sf6 tho, it's a lot of fun and the more, the merrier.
I never got the hate for SonicFox. The best I could find was that they're toxic, but dude, someone like Punk is much more toxic than Sonic and he's loved by most. Not saying Punk is terrible, but just compared to SonicFox.
This was an amazing video! As someone who has semi-recently joined the FGC, I was initially nervous that I wasn't going to fit in or receive judgement for being different. When I started going to more regional tournaments I realized that like so many people are part of the LGBT community to the point where I feel like I'm in the majority lmao. It is a very comforting experience knowing that there are people within the community going through the same thing I am, and I am extremely grateful for that. Yes I am a Trans Woman, and yes I do play Guilty Gear Xrd (I main Slayer, I love BEEG damage).
So the gist is that people are less hateful in-person and fighting games are an in -person scene, makes sense. I'm always surprised at how people act online, heck I'm surprised people even bother paying enough attention to mock ones identity. I can never tell if someone has the flags set because they are an ally or if they are actually of that group lol
I love the research you put in man. Mad respects. I’ve noticed a common theme it’s mainly the 2d anime fighters that are the most “gay” but that’s also weird because guilty gear had a shit time of controversy around its scene 😅
this was a good and cool video. definitely helpful for newer fans to know they're seen and a part of the community, and it's good to know folks like you are looking into this and finding out about how deep it runs. warms the heart and makes me glad you know you're seen as well. continue to improve and grow both in-game and offline.

Hello smelody
Hey it's melody no maidens.
Deer Jumpscare
And with donk I mean the trash talking. you don't see a video called "Why Are Fighting Games So Gay?" and proceed to scroll by without a second thought.
It's not even just "gay people" either, it's minority groups in general. Fighting games have a lot more PoC (in fact, usually I see just as much, if not more black people in major tournaments in the West compared to team based esports where I can probably count the number of black players on my hand for LoL or the such) and cis women competing at a high level too
I honestly can't think of any other explanation than minority groups being attacked for being minorities than them not being seen as much in team games
Those same cousins I mentioned also only played as Ryu, link, or scorpion while most of the rest of us tried out everyone.. and I stuck with Raiden, katana, or peach 💖
The urban arcade theory sounds acceptable but the nature of an arcade is existing where people have disposable income, so regardless of locale that income is necessary to participate, unfortunately.
It's mainly because of the 1v1 nature of fighting game. There's less blaming in 1v1 match than in a team match
Well there are less of us in the west. If we are around 14.4%, we can't be represented everywhere.
Sports Games ( Madden, 2K, etc..)
Fighting Games (Atlanta, Florida, NY/NJ/Cali have strong scenes with PoCs)
FPS
Actual Sports to play in college and professional leagues. (Overrepresented)
Its not about being attacked, its about which game will get you to where you want to go.
Fighting games don't require you to get to Master Rank to qualify for the biggest tournaments in the world. It helps a lot but the format is pretty open in certain regions.

@@ziwuri I mean it's on point isn't it?
The running joke for smash bros is that we’re all playing for pride, glory, and $11.37.
You can't say that NOW there is a larger queer population in MtG and D&D than Star Wars or Marvel, that is absolute nonsense.

Also it’s really funny how people complain about Bridget being trans as if a boy dressing like a girl isn’t gay somehow
i have gotten SO many comments saying awful things just because i said bridget is a girl, like comeon i just think shes cute it's really not a big deal

My feed shows this next to FChamp's "Why is math important in fighting games". It doesn't get much more diverse than this.
None of that has to do with homosexuals though

I think another note to the whole point about character selection, is how characters in the fighting game community are uniquely important. Their designs are incredibly deep and without bans or needs for teamcomps, maining a character is simply the way to go.
In a competitive environment this often leads to people becoming synonymous with characters, placing an outstanding amount of meaning on the them.
