I got recommended this vid by a socal local group. When I started at my local last year I immediately noticed way more diversity than other videogame events I've been to in the past (I was only familiar with online shooters at the time). I really appreciate you sharing your experience and other icons in the FGC. The welcoming aspect of the community benefits everybody and I experienced that first-hand when moving to a completely new state and fighting through some social anxiety. Makes a lot of sense that the social and self-improvement aspect of these games invites some of the most awesome people to play!
My theory: to fully experience fighting games, you have to *regularly* go out and meet other people, and when you meet a lot of other people, there's going to be a lot of different people. Same reason there's a larger queer population in Magic the Gathering and DnD than say Star Wars or Marvel. These games also basically require some form of self expression and way you play. Even in Magic, two people can run the same deck and have the same hand and draw the same cards, but they can both play completely differently. And that's not even considering what deck you want to play and if you want to build one. DnD is basically self-expression: the game, and we all know how Umisho and Leffen both play Happy Chaos differently. And when a game not only rewards but REQUIRES expression, people who feel the need to express what they've hidden their whole life will express it.
This is sorta a negative comment to make, but I think one of the most important parts of this phenomenon is that fighting games are built around people, and not ideas like esports. Esports are pushed to make themselves like real sports, with all the money and advertising and teams, and that means they need INVESTORS, while fighting games have been entirely a community effort. If a person in esports proves too controversial regarding their identity, they likely wouldn't be contracted on. I don't think we'll ever get someone as open as Sonicfox in esports, because the more conservative funds providers would dislike who would be getting this money.
while it does suck to say, you’re absolutely right. there’s a reason a majority of the gender/sexual minority tournaments (in traditional esports) are completely funded by their communities, and that’s that big companies aren’t willing to invest in that as it’s a big risk for them. it’s also super unpopular to a large majority of these games overseas audience, so in the companies eyes, it’s a lose lose situation a lot of the time.
Strongly disagree honestly, like if the fgc had a player as open as donk people would be screaming for him to get banned at events especially in the modern fgc. The reason why fgc’s isn’t esports is because the games don’t evolve so much as change entirely. Sf2 and sf6 have nothing in common except for the name. Legacy tekken and nu tekken are entirely different games. Don’t even start on strive and real guilty gear. While in esports like Dota and cs, if you played dota all stars or cs1.6. Odds are if you play Dota 2 or cs2 right now the game isn’t gonna be that much different
@@Shodan130 I have been looking up this Donk kid for like 30 minutes and I do not understand why people would want to ban him. Is he super omega trans or something I do not understand. Also yeah the differently numbered games are different so of course they'll be different, SF2 came out 30some years ago. Plus this is a comment about the economics of the FGC vs Esports.
@@larrydupp3988 mate Dota and CS also came out near 30 years ago. Like late 90’s. That’s my point the games have changed very little since their inception. While fighting games are constantly changing which is something people don’t look for in a spot. People wouldn’t play football if you could use your hands for 7 years then you had to use a stick for the next 7. And with donk I mean the trash talking. The fgc you can’t even pop off without people trying to get you out.
That's not a fighting game I've never heard of, that's Chaos Code, I have it on Steam. Wait... Crap, I might just be the trans girl in the local scene who's always practicing fighting games that no one's ever heard of and I feel called out by this.
Now I'm wondering if the guy who introduced me to Arcana Heart and DFCI is trans. They presented as cis at the time, but the time was also 10 years ago.
It's not even just "gay people" either, it's minority groups in general. Fighting games have a lot more PoC (in fact, usually I see just as much, if not more black people in major tournaments in the West compared to team based esports where I can probably count the number of black players on my hand for LoL or the such) and cis women competing at a high level too I honestly can't think of any other explanation than minority groups being attacked for being minorities than them not being seen as much in team games
From talking to PoC people about it, it's more a question of urban and suburban racial demographics in the US. Because arcades only really work in heavily populated areas, and because of the White Flight, US cities have a much higher proportion of PoC than the suburbs. Therefore, more of them grew up playing in the arcades than white people did, thus a higher proportion of PoC playing fighting games now. The inverse seems probably true for other Esports games, since most of those are on PC, which were (and really still are) really bloody expensive, so you'd have seen more people in the wealthier suburbs (i.e. white people, because, again, White Flight) with them than in the cities, thus creating the foundations for self-reinforcing community feedback loops. Doesn't help that a lot of PC gamers are notoriously racist/sexist/etc. as you'd kinda expect from people living in the suburbs, but I don't know how much that part affects things.
A sub 1k channel about fighting games with structured commentary *AND A MIC THAT DOESN'T SOUND LIKE A TIN CAN!!...* a trully astounding experience in this day age 👏👏👏
You know turns out that being a dick to someone in person is not easy for us as people Also even people who would be a dick to you in person has the social pressure
Your conclusion at the end of the video really spoke to me, I have so much appreciation for the fgc because of the space and community provides. fighting games (for me atleast) are about accepting yourself and improving upon the aspects you feel can be improved upon, and then always being open to helping others get better at their craft no matter their walks of life. I'm not particularly good about putting how I feel about fighting games into words but they're very important to me and many others. This was an awesome video that really reinforced the goodwill I feel for the fgc. :)
"Why are fighting games gay?" ExCUSE me you mean to tell me that you thought the game about big, burly, buff men fighting eachother in revealing clothes was STRAIGHT game???

There are honestly so many factors. Fighting games have always been more diverse, also having a disproportionately large black audience compared to other genres. Played internationally, with large rosters of characters designed to have broad appeal. Meritocracy, one on one, with a focus on mutual improvement. And just bonding over shared interest.
Black audience (me), lgtb audience, Disabled audience (also me).. it's why i love the fgc. The large diversity it has. A mecca of diffrent personalities and lives all for competition.
The answer is autism. An extreme amount of Trans/gender diverse people are on the spectrum. Its the reason why they fixate and get so good. Ask SonicFox

I wouldn't use the smash community as a representation of the fighting game community. Would have made a lot more sense to use Street Fighter, or Tekken.
@@lydiawilder5996 yes, and it is also by far the most popular fighting game, encompassing vast majority of the fighting game community, and as such is a much better representation of the fighting game community than smash. So if you want to say that the street fighter community seems toxic and queerphobic, it goes against the whole premise of this video.
video essays, just like literary essays, reflect personal experiences. centering the video on games that she has more experience with (guilty gear and smash) gives it room to be imbued with a lot more personal significance and knowledge of details i know smash and the FGC have a contentious history, but there genuinely is quite a lot in common between them and especially for spectators there's a big shared demographic. i don't think the video would've been as good if she focused on tekken or street fighter
@parkourboio1062 because if there was a focus on Tekken and Street Fighter the whole narrative of the video would have been incorrect, and would call into question the validity of the picture the video is trying to paint 🎨
to me, a fight is as emotionally intimate as sex, and for a long time men have only ever felt they could express the way they feel about another man through fighting and competition. the very concept of rivalry is very romantic to begin with, and truth be told many fighting game players love their rival. love is an energy which helps you to grow, and growing thru competition is what fighting games are all about
It's true that in sports like jiujitsu people say they really get to know their opponent through the matches... also it's a fighting style where men grab each other on the ground, so you might really be onto something
I know you posted this a while ago. It just came across my feed. There is one person I believe you left out, from the original eSport, Starcraft. Her name is Scarlet, and she has been a top level player for a long time, and she has been very open about her transition and her journey.
I think another note to the whole point about character selection, is how characters in the fighting game community are uniquely important. Their designs are incredibly deep and without bans or needs for teamcomps, maining a character is simply the way to go. In a competitive environment this often leads to people becoming synonymous with characters, placing an outstanding amount of meaning on the them.
Just as a little nitpick, Starcraft and RTSs in general are more similar to fighting games in a lot of ways, in the sense that most of the competitive scene is community based, even Starcraft (which also gets the big moeny don't get me wrong), and is primarily 1v1. Team based exists, but it's always as a side event, or in smaller tourneys. I mean, the entire reason Age of Empires has made a come back is because a mod team for AoE2 was so consistent and was so good that they were handed the game officially, and now are the actual developers behind AoE's revival, and handle all of the balancing for the games. Unlike fighting games, however, the competitive aspect is not the main appeal for to casual audiences. The fact that Starcraft is so popular as a competitive game is great, but it's such a tough space to break into, even more intimidating than FG. But since that's what developers chase, the genre has been basically dormant for more than a decade. Also, while not that common in the US, in East Asia and across Europe, there are thriving local RTS scenes located primarily in PC bangs or LAN events. Not to the same extent that FG have, but more prominent than having FPS locals, and I think this largely is a result of the games being 1v1. Also, the nature of the genre gives it a slightly impersonal vibe since it's pulled back from the action, and that most of the games have some sort of historical flair or real-world conflict flavor (Starcraft/Warcraft/Age of Mythology excepting) it attracts a certain type of person. Suspiciously specific historical focus, lots of talk about strategic thinking, weird obsession with playing the Faci factions. Same type as the unsavory Warhammer 40k fan who likes the Imperium of man a bit too much. None of this to discount your points or anything, but I love RTSs and I wouldn't lump them in with the rest of E-sports. FG and RTSs are the proto esports anyway, having competitive scenes before the rise of corporate sponsorships and what not.
Yeah I’ll be fully honest here I’m really not all too familiar with the RTS genre, I just added it to the beginning segment loosely knowing stuff. Thanks for your feedback, that’s really interesting and I’ll definitely have to look into that more!
In League, there was a NA player by the name of Remilia who went to play on the LCS for a couple of years iirc and she was trans. She played support (like yourself) but she was in one of the worst teams so she didn't stay for long tho. Anyways, I loved the video and the perspective that you use while talking about this.
I never got the hate for SonicFox. The best I could find was that they're toxic, but dude, someone like Punk is much more toxic than Sonic and he's loved by most. Not saying Punk is terrible, but just compared to SonicFox.
the last clip reminded me of a screen shot of a discord message that went as followed "Let me walk home and hrt then Ill be good to strive" "Hrt before strive should be considered doping"
As a pro fortnite player (no this is not my main acc) who sits at about top 100 in the Americas; im the only queer person OR WOMAN that i know who is around this level. I did know one other queer person but he has stopped competing. I am "out" in the friend groups i play in but iwould never post it on my official acc, the response and hate wouldn't be worth it. I recently started playing guilty gear strive as my first fighting game and was shocked by the about of women and queer people competing at the top of the game. It really warmed my heart to know that other games have more representation.
I suck at fighting games, I always find the controls a little too complicated, but i still find them interesting, and I'm very bisexual, so there's clearly a conspiracy here
I think it being grassroots is really helping. TO's, Top players, commentators, they don't care about the "look" of "marketability" of things. Everyone just wants to have fun playing the same game. I think that's why the FGC is also extremely ethnically diverse. But I still think there is a bit of a problem regarding sexism. Trans women are welcomed because they had the same upbringing as most male fighting game players, but women trying to get into the space without being nerds are facing typical "discord behaviour".
As Sasha Velour once said, camp is an expression of effort and grandiosity and not based on taste or passability. So many characters in fighting games are campy expressions of gender. Just look at Chun Li in comparison to Zangief as examples. Also, some studies show specifically that gay men have a larger, denser amygdala which results in a social and emotional intelligence closer to that of straight women. I think the combo of those two things and the zeitgeist of toxic team based games results in gays going to single player games. I have to play the team based game of being an openly gay man in the workplace every day where the opinions of others shapes how my team views me; I just want to play games that are solely based on my level of effort and skill and not on my communication and executive decisions because I already get paid to do that 40 hours a week. Love this video, thanks for making it ❤
I'd just like to say that I've been obsessing over Adachi's theme (A Fool or A Clown specifically form P4A) all day and you playing it at one point made me unreasobaly pop the fuck off at 11:36. The day ended as it started thanks to you using it for 3 seconds.
This was an amazing video! As someone who has semi-recently joined the FGC, I was initially nervous that I wasn't going to fit in or receive judgement for being different. When I started going to more regional tournaments I realized that like so many people are part of the LGBT community to the point where I feel like I'm in the majority lmao. It is a very comforting experience knowing that there are people within the community going through the same thing I am, and I am extremely grateful for that. Yes I am a Trans Woman, and yes I do play Guilty Gear Xrd (I main Slayer, I love BEEG damage).
As a fellow trans gal finally starting to play fighting games this year, thank you so much for making this. I feel so seen and represented and among my own people with the FGC community. It’s such an inspiration to see people like Umisho and Magi reach the heights they have in tournaments, and to see folks like yourself just as enamored with the scene as I am. Watching this and hearing you talk about how important representation in media is makes me think of one time I came across a video essay talking about how wanting to be represented in media is “narcissistic” or some shit. This was around the time where I think I saw a lot more conservative opinions online and didn’t know enough to know that they were stupid, so I was planning on watching it, but ended up being too lazy to really start it. I’m so glad my fuckin ADHD brain prevented me from watching that because I would hate to have my opinions on representation formed by that video. I enjoy making gay characters to represent others, and although I haven’t really made any finished stories yet, i would love to hear that one of my characters helped an actual person out with their identity.
i have gotten SO many comments saying awful things just because i said bridget is a girl, like comeon i just think shes cute it's really not a big deal
@@goIdy weebs care all about the artist’s intent until the artist intends for something to be gay (Not sure if weeb is quite the right term here but you know what I mean)
@@familiarnamemissing3382 When the established lore for the boy dressing like a girl has him repeatedly correcting anyone who mistakes him for a girl, repeatedly stating that how he dresses doesn't make him any less of a man, and working as a bounty bounter to ultimately disprove a superstition about his existence as a boy being a bad omen, it's only logical that having the newest official lore state that the boy now identifies as a girl is bound to raise some eyebrows. This is where complaints about Bridget come from, it has nothing to do with gender or sexual orientation. Venom was created and added to Guilty Gear before Bridget, he's been gay the whole time, everyone knows, no one ever cared. If Bridget was trans from the start, people wouldn't complain either. Character retcons are the problem.
The funniest part of Sonicfox is that there's a real chance that if you go to the arcade at a furcon, they go to enough of them there's a nonzero chance you'll accidentally get on a cabinet with them, a nightmare for any casual FG furry lmao
Life long gamer, nonbinary... the FGC has been one of the most welcoming, kind, supportive communities I've ever been a part of. I play Tekken mainly, though on a break because of computer issues (GAAH I NEED A NEW ONE SO BAD), among a variety of other games. I've never seen a community ask for your pronouns, let alone highlight them as proudly as I have here. On top of that, I've never seen a community self police bigotry in the way the FGC has, with even the game creators like Ishiwatari basically telling bigots to get over themselves or play something else. It's amazing how incredible simply being seen and appreciated feels.
I remember being young and having a friend that loved Shun from Saint Seiya anime and loving the boy with the white hair (dont remember the name) from Sakura Card Captors... At that time, I didn't know that he was homosexual and he loved those characters bc it represented him. Many years have passed, we are still old friends and I remember never thinking less of him bc he was "weird" like to others kids called him... And I think that representation in those animes mattered so much for me to understand that there are people like him in this world. Anyway, today we are in a very weird place related to representation in videogames, moves, series etc... Many times the representations seems soo off to me... and IDK why it seems soo artificial and not the same that I've experienced with this friend. But I fear that the this kind of "miss representation" is somehow upsetting people so much more.... and I feel that many times is incentivizing more racism and more prejudice. There is any balance to this approach of representation? Why I feel that a new Star Wars character super dull and generic while I love each cast of anime Dungeon Meshi (where almost every single body type, color and minority is represented in there) ? It's really werdy... maybe I don't know what I'm talking about and shouldn't talk about this. Idk if I expressed well this feeling... But yeah... sorry if I offended someone... I loved ur video! Subscribed :D
i think figthing games is preferred to be played the way it is side by side is due to its roots way back playing it on arcade where both respect and hype is achived whenever a new challenger bravely lines up or puts their token on the arcade cabinet to challenge the current playing champion ... online esports in the other hand hides in their avatar character that most of the time anonimity can change the way people behave than face to face
Very good video! I have a funny comparison that really supports your point: the TCG (trading card games) community is a very gay one, I can only speak for Yu-Gi-Oh but the LGBT community is more than welcome and we have an actual trans world championship winner, Jessica Robinson. The existence of local tournaments and other irl events really incentivize the basic human decency that's missing so often in online-only games. Ever since I started playing YuGiOh I've met so many queer friends and found myself to be nonbinary on the way. So now I have many LGBT FGC TCG (trying to get the entire alphabet) friends and they're all so cool.
funnily enough you’re not the first person to mention this, that’s so cool ! and really does show that being in person, sharing a space together, makes a huge difference
smaller community = more control of whats going on around them. but also team base situations make it harder to connect with others. thats why in regular sports lgbt+ players who play pro usually go closet to avoid controversy and other. FGC is more grass roots so FGC has more of a mental of " we take care of own when we can" kind of attitude.
yo that controller in the end and the keyboard on your tweet are the goats of this video for me ngl, great video btw, kinda sad those types of events are rare here in The South (the global one)
one on one combat prolly plays a role on that as well, in traditional sports is very easy for people to get in a us vs them mentality. Would be interesting to see if that also happens to chess, considering that i only ever heard of guity gear in trans contexts i feel safe to assume it does not happen, which probably has to do with the fact that is way harder to relate to a tower than it is to a hot person draw by a potencially underpaid japanese artist (guilty gear is japanese right? i just assumed it because of the convulated lore)

Makes a lot of sense that the social and self-improvement aspect of these games invites some of the most awesome people to play!
cant believe this video wasnt just an umisho clipset smh
You can't say that NOW there is a larger queer population in MtG and D&D than Star Wars or Marvel, that is absolute nonsense.
HRT moving through the nerd community like how heroin moved through the black community.🤦🏽♂️😂

The running joke for smash bros is that we’re all playing for pride, glory, and $11.37.
Now I'm wondering if the guy who introduced me to Arcana Heart and DFCI is trans. They presented as cis at the time, but the time was also 10 years ago.
you don't see a video called "Why Are Fighting Games So Gay?" and proceed to scroll by without a second thought.
It's not even just "gay people" either, it's minority groups in general. Fighting games have a lot more PoC (in fact, usually I see just as much, if not more black people in major tournaments in the West compared to team based esports where I can probably count the number of black players on my hand for LoL or the such) and cis women competing at a high level too
I honestly can't think of any other explanation than minority groups being attacked for being minorities than them not being seen as much in team games
Show this to Grummz and watch the skin melt from his face like the Nazis in Raiders

Also even people who would be a dick to you in person has the social pressure
Your conclusion at the end of the video really spoke to me, I have so much appreciation for the fgc because of the space and community provides. fighting games (for me atleast) are about accepting yourself and improving upon the aspects you feel can be improved upon, and then always being open to helping others get better at their craft no matter their walks of life. I'm not particularly good about putting how I feel about fighting games into words but they're very important to me and many others.
None of that has to do with homosexuals though

Ehh Street Fighter is a lot more toxic than most other communities, and more queerphobic.
@@lydiawilder5996 yes, and it is also by far the most popular fighting game, encompassing vast majority of the fighting game community, and as such is a much better representation of the fighting game community than smash.

@parkourboio1062 because if there was a focus on Tekken and Street Fighter the whole narrative of the video would have been incorrect, and would call into question the validity of the picture the video is trying to paint 🎨
Scarlett from Starcraft 2 is also noteworthy
The fact it's noteworthy kinda shows the difference
to me, a fight is as emotionally intimate as sex, and for a long time men have only ever felt they could express the way they feel about another man through fighting and competition. the very concept of rivalry is very romantic to begin with, and truth be told many fighting game players love their rival. love is an energy which helps you to grow, and growing thru competition is what fighting games are all about
"All is gay in love and war"
This is assertionism
Kiss your anime rival, it's good for both of your competitive growth fr fr
It's true that in sports like jiujitsu people say they really get to know their opponent through the matches... also it's a fighting style where men grab each other on the ground, so you might really be onto something
Holy shit
This is hot
I know you posted this a while ago. It just came across my feed. There is one person I believe you left out, from the original eSport, Starcraft. Her name is Scarlet, and she has been a top level player for a long time, and she has been very open about her transition and her journey.
Wild to see our bracket in the first 3 seconds :3
Thanks for your feedback, that’s really interesting and I’ll definitely have to look into that more!
this same question was asked in regards to higher numbers of black and poc representation and fighting games

My feed shows this next to FChamp's "Why is math important in fighting games". It doesn't get much more diverse than this.
Smash Bros name explains itself.

Also it’s really funny how people complain about Bridget being trans as if a boy dressing like a girl isn’t gay somehow

This is where complaints about Bridget come from, it has nothing to do with gender or sexual orientation.
But yeah... sorry if I offended someone...

i think figthing games is preferred to be played the way it is side by side is due to its roots way back playing it on arcade where both respect and hype is achived whenever a new challenger bravely lines up or puts their token on the arcade cabinet to challenge the current playing champion ... online esports in the other hand hides in their avatar character that most of the time anonimity can change the way people behave than face to face
Would be interesting to see if that also happens to chess, considering that i only ever heard of guity gear in trans contexts i feel safe to assume it does not happen, which probably has to do with the fact that is way harder to relate to a tower than it is to a hot person draw by a potencially underpaid japanese artist (guilty gear is japanese right? i just assumed it because of the convulated lore)
as a nb person i won't lie, testament was one of the big reasons why i started playing strive haha, cosplaying them is definitely on my bucket list
