    No spoiler here, but to just say this was a VERY historic race in regards to the driver and car owner in victory lane.

    At 32:40 espn goes to commercial break with what appeared to be at least 6 strong contenders and at least 12 cars on lead lap. Jody ridley was 10th. At32:50 we are back from break and the leader has lapped the field, 4 of the 6 strong competitors…poof gone. Must have been a looong commercial break 😂

    *POINT STANDINGS and WINS before the 1981 MASON-DIXON 500 (12 of 31):*
    #28 Bobby Allison (1731pts with 2 wins, Pontiac)
    #88 Ricky Rudd (-153, Buick)
    #11 Darrell Waltrip (-164 with 4 wins, Buick)
    #12 Harry Gant (-270, Oldsmobile)
    #2 Dale Earnhardt (-342, Pontiac)
    #44 Terry Labonte (-343, Buick)
    #90 Jody Ridley (-352, Ford)
    #43 Richard Petty (-382 with 2 wins, Buick)
    #15 Benny Parsons (-396 with 1 win, Ford)
    Cale Yarborough (#27 Buick) decided to move down to a partial schedule yet still won the Atlanta 500. Morgan Shepherd (Pontiac #5) surprised many when he won the Virginia 500.
    Drivers listed are the season's current top8, last season's top8 plus whatever race winner that doesn't fit any of those 2 descriptions. Yes, I’m using the unsponsored names of the races. In Dover's case, the Spring race was the Mason-Dixon 500 while the later one was the Delaware 500.

    I use to love Dover when it was pavement. You can see the smoke boiling off those tires when the cars were in the corners. I thought it made for better racing also. The concrete took that away.

  • @cjs83172
    @cjs83172 4 роки тому +3

    At about 1:52:00, Dick Berggren mentioned that Junie Donlavey's team had won a race at Talladega with Dick Brooks in 1973. That was a factual error. While Brooks did win the 1973 Talladega 500, it was not in Junie Donlavey's Ford, but rather in a Crawford Brothers Racing Plymouth. It wasn't until 1975 that Brooks joined Donlavey's team, though Brooks is the driver Donlavey is most associated with, and Donlavey's team is the one Brooks is most associated with driving for. But they never won a race together.
    Also, one curious question. Just before Cale Yarborough's engine let go, ESPN (and likely NASCAR scoring) had Bobby Allison ahead of Jody Ridley, but when Yarborough's engine failed, they had Ridley as the leader. They never showed it, but how did Ridley get ahead of Allison in the closing laps (between that time, which would be 1:35:58 in the upload, and when Yarborough's engine failed), or was he ahead of Allison all the time and they had Ridley's scoring one lap behind where it actually was, because just before that (when they did a rundown just inside 100 laps to go), they did have Ridley ahead of Allison.

    • @jamesgentry13

      If I remember Allison had an unscheduled stop for some reason

    • @cjs83172
      @cjs83172 4 роки тому

      @@jamesgentry13 Either that or the scoring got messed up, which under the circumstances that happened late in the event, was certainly possible, since you had one car two laps ahead break and then not long after that, another car that was five laps ahead broke, and in the confusion, it's certainly possible that the scoring got messed up while the laps completed was temporarily locked while the field was catching up, one way or the other. In fact, Bobby Allison contended for years that he actually won this race. But it's also possible that what the network had was also wrong for a time. Even at Indianapolis, the broadcasting crews had trouble with scoring for quite a number of years, and their broadcasts were tape-delayed until 1986 (1979 with Mike Mosley and 1984 and '86 with Roberto Guerrero were examples of this).
